Leave it to the experts, phone fear group told By Nick Moore OBJECTIONS are heating up over a proposed mobile phone base station at Merthyr Rd with protest marches and even construction disruption considered if telcos Optus and Vodafone fail to abandon the location. Paul Sargaison, who opposes the mobile station on health safety grounds, said (on April 29) that his petition had attracted 320 signatures, mostly locals. “Members of the community feel strongly enough to chain themselves up to this and that,” Mr Sargaison said. Opponents were prepared to do “pretty much whatever it takes” to stop it, he said. However, a spokesman for the mobile phone industry counselled New Farm locals against relying on the internet for trustworthy health advice on mobile phone station radiation. Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association CEO Chris Althaus stressed the findings of the UK Health Protection Agency’s Advisory Group on Non-ionising Radiation, which found no evidence of adverse health effects from mobile signals below international safety standards. “On many issues, including matters of health advice, people need to be discriminating and check that advice on the internet is from a reliable source,” Mr Althaus reported the UK body as saying.
He said the general lack of understanding in the community about how mobile phone technology operated and the complexity of the science involved, was why people should rely on the advice of independent health authorities such as the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency, who set the national safety standard. Mr Althaus said the agency reported: “There are still limitations to the published research that preclude a definitive judgment, but the evidence overall has not demonstrated any adverse effects on human health from exposure to radiofrequency fields below internationally accepted guideline levels.” Optus and Vodafone were set to build the station atop the building that houses the NAB and Westpac branches at 92-96 Merthyr Rd. Mr Sargaison lives 50m away in an apartment above the TAB at 98 Merthyr that he shares with wife Karen, son Sam, 24, and Sam’s son, Oden, 4. Mr Sargaison also held concerns for nearby Holy Spirit primary school which, he said, would be in line of sight of the base station, resulting in stronger emissions. School mum Nicole Cronk said (on April 29) that at least 70 families at Holy Spirit had sent letters of concern to federal member Teresa Gambaro, Vodafone, Optus, and town planner Benjamin Cross, of CPS Global, Continued on page 14>

A buzzing river floats my boat A RIVER comes to life when it’s used. Stand on a bridge spanning a river in Europe and you are treated to a living canvas of light, colour and movement.
the comment By Mike O’Connor
THE upper reaches of the Brisbane River may no longer attract commercial traffic but there is no reason why they cannot be used by more recreational craft. Stroll along the river boardwalk at Teneriffe and the element that is missing is boats. The Brisbane City Council has said it wants to increase the number of jetties and marinas on that stretch of the river between Yeronga and Hamilton. It has confirmed that it has received 10 expressions of interest by parties with proposals that would increase public access to, and usage of, the river. It is yet to reveal the detail of these proposals but at least one is believed to involve the construction of a marina at Newstead and running the existing over-water power lines
stretching between Bulimba and Newstead under the river. There should be more marinas and more berths and there should be an insistence by the council that any approval to build them is dependent upon them being affordable. They should also be designed to accommodate small boats such as tinnies and runabouts. I have nothing against luxury craft and wish I could afford one but these initiatives have to be aimed at the broader population to allow it to more easily enjoy what has become the focal point of our city. If the blots on the landscape that are the cross-river powerlines were to go as well, it would be a welcome bonus. While the council is considering these options, it might also give some thought to banning jet skis. They are noisy, frequently ridden at excessive speed and have no place on the river.

Letters, jobs’ book reveal rich Stevenson family history
GLASWEGIAN builder William Stevenson bought land running through from Abbott St to Moray St in 1866, and it was still in the family a century later.
historicalsociety by Gerard Benjamin When the “Bowen Terrace Estate” was being developed in 1884 — bounded by Bowen Terrace, and Merthyr, Moray and Sydney streets — one prime exclusion was the Stevenson property. This resulted in current-day Reginald and Herbert streets never linking up because they stopped at the Stevenson boundary. On the Abbott St frontage, Mr Stevenson constructed a large family home named Kilbowie to recall his Caledonian origins. Behind it, a school house was built from which his 16-year-old daughter, Jeanette, commenced her “Girls’ and Infants’ Private School” in January 1900. The prestige of its address was unrivalled: “opposite

It had operated next door to the Stevensons at Alroy, which still stands at 174 Moray St. Miss Stevenson’s school was remarkably successful, and was later known as the New Farm Private School. Successive generations of some of Brisbane’s leading families began their education here. Jeanette’s sister, Eleanor, and her niece, Biddy Wallace, helped at the school which closed in the mid-1960s when Jeanette died. *** One of William Stevenson’s greatgreat-grandchildren, Stuart Wallace, is assembling the family history. The task is helped by Mr Stevenson’s jobs’ book – which shows the range of work that he undertook — as well as a collection of around 50 family letters. “William and his 23-year-old

A decade ago Patrick produced a book entitled River: 150 Years of Brisbane River Housing in order to document the styles of housing built on the Brisbane River through various decades. Prizes add to fun of the fete

NEW Farm State School’s fete on Sunday, July 26, will be a time to celebrate our community. The school has been a major part of the New Farm, Fortitude Valley, Teneriffe and Newstead communities since 1901, so it is not surprising that this year’s fete theme is “celebrating our community.” Fete Convenor Nyasha Mukandi said that this year the live and silent auctions would be as impressive as ever. “We are amassing a fabulous list of items for our auctions, including another beautiful painting by our very own and internationally recognised artist David Hinchliffe,” she said. “And for our raffle, we will again be offering the very popular prize of seven nights’ accommodation in a stunning four-bedroom house in Queenstown. “We hope that everyone will ‘like’ our Facebook page (facebook.com/ newfarmfete) to keep up to date with latest fete developments, including new auction and raffle items.” The Best of New Farm competition returns this year. Again, the school invites green thumbs to start mixing their organic fertilisers, planting their prize tomatoes and singing to their butternuts. And for those more at home in the kitchen, NFSS encourages you to start testing family cake recipes and saving jars ready to fill with jams and chutneys.

KNOWN by many as Mr TV, Brian Cahill, a New Farm resident of more than 40 years, passed away peacefully in March aged 84. Born in Innisfail, Brian came to Queenslanders’ attention in 1959 when he became the face of BTQ7 as its first newsreader. His mellow tones had propelled him through a career in country and then city radio and on to three major TV stations. And when he set aside the serious business of reading the nightly news, he was only too happy to try his substantial skills as a singer, thespian and comedian with some of the best in the business. This, though, was only part of Brian’s immense and varied talent. He was an English and History master at St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace (1973-82). He completed a BA while in his 60s, fuelling his love of history and literature. After years of reading the news,
he decided he’d try his hand at making it and became a popular Member of State Parliament. Passionate about almost all sports, he especially loved rugby as a player, coach and a no-nonsense referee. In 1984 he and his talented wife, Denise, founded the Queensland Musical Theatre Company in whose productions he regularly starred or directed. We were fellow residents of that New Farm icon, Glenfalloch, in which he and Denise lived for 40 years. They moved there after their riverside home became submerged in the ’74 flood and took up residence high and dry in the penthouse. No matter what one’s achievements in theatre, music, sport, or politics, in the end what distinguishes someone is their sense of humanity. That’s what distinguished Brian. No greater tribute can be given than to say of a man he was a gentleman who loved and served his family and his community with dedication and distinction. That was Brian Cahill.

Festival promises even better time
BRISBANE is already abuzz with news that the Teneriffe Festival is set to dazzle again on Saturday, July 4. Now in its sixth year, the Teneriffe Festival is known as one of Brisbane's most prominent community events, celebrating the suburb’s history, energy, cultural diversity, commerce and beauty. Conceived after Brisbane’s inner-city area of Teneriffe was officially named a suburb early in 2010, the one-day festival incorporates a rich program of street markets, live music, fashion, Richard Bodley. dining and historical and multicultural displays. Several of Teneriffe’s main streets will be closed, offering visitors a magnificent opportunity to discover the best that the suburb has to offer. “Each year we aim to build on the success of the previous year and also keep our festival-goers guessing a little by offering new activities and precincts,” Teneriffe Festival’s chairman, Richard Bodley, said. “This year we have a few surprises up our sleeve, which we’ll be revealing over the coming weeks. “But you can be assured we’ve organised an amazing line up of historical, cultural and entertainment activities that will appeal to all age groups.” The local community has really embraced the festival in previous years and this has helped build it into an event that is bigger and better each year, when other community festivals are struggling to remain alive. Developed and managed by the volunteer board of the Teneriffe Festival Inc, the community festival attracts an audience of about 50,000 people across all of its events, making it one of Brisbane’s most significant festivals. The festival stretches along Vernon Tce from Florence St to Commercial Rd and incorporates laneway closures on Ethel and Dath streets.
Happy Mother’s Day Competition THE Village News is giving away a wonderful prize to some lucky mum this Mother’s Day – a gorgeous $300 katieb outfit. To enter your mum in the competition, email editor@ newfarmvillagenews.com.au with your name, address and phone number and in 25 words or less, tell us why your Mum would look great in a katieb outfit. katieb was born after local Kate Bryant gave up on her search for the clothing she wanted but could never find and began designing her own high quality, classic pieces for women who are sizes 10 to 20. Coming from a background in textiles, Kate developed her own crisp linen which is exclusive to her katieb range. Kate is very particular about tailored, flattering cuts for all women. Her elegant designs highlight features like necklines, using striking collars as well as beautiful tie fronts to accentuate waistlines. The label has been created to complement the female shape, regardless of size and includes a selection of thoughtfully designed dresses, tops, tunics and pants.
WIN
Visit Kate’s online store www.katieb.com.au to view her range and find stockists. The winner will be drawn on Mother’s Day, Sunday 10 May and notified by phone.
Vision for wharves on show
LOCAL residents will get a sneak peek at the upcoming transformation of the Howard Smith Wharves site at a community information session on Saturday, May 9. The session will be an opportunity to view development plans and speak to key members of the project team. Howard Smith Wharves development director Luke Fraser said he was eager to chat to locals and hear their feedback. “We …hope the local residents will appreciate our low-scale development approach and the new access to the river it will provide,” he said. The project will preserve the original wharves and buildings and dedicate 80 per cent of the project site to public open space. The proposal includes a five-star 160-room boutique hotel, an underground car park, 1500sq m exhibition space and new restaurants and cafes. “We’re hoping people will use Saturday’s session to consider our plans … and tell us what they think,” he said. Girls need to be safe, not nice GROWING up, I learnt to always say ‘Yes’ to any man who asked me for a dance, so as not to offend. I teach my daughter, however, that it’s OK to say ‘No.’ Some staggering figures hit the headlines this week. Most acknowledge, and statistics prove, that
villageview by Beth J Leach violence (physical and sexual) in all societies and since the dawn of time is perpetrated more by men than women. Sadly, in Australia each week, two women are killed by men they know. The 2015 grim tally is 31 dead women in 15 weeks. According to the government’s Australian Institute of Family Studies, one in three women is sexually abused at some point in her life. To bring that figure home, pause. You know many of them. It’s her. It’s me. It prompted me to ask the question, what can be done immediately to increase safety? I came across The Gift of Fear, by author and security
specialist for the US government Gavin de Becker. In his book, he explains that there are almost always preincident signals that can be flagged before an outcome, and I agree. He details that we all study human behaviour prediction daily. Even simple tasks rely on us doing this; dodging approaching pedestrians on the street and predicting which side they’ll pass us on, or pre-empting whether the person driving a car is going to stop at a zebra crossing based on the eye contact we have with the driver as they register our existence and right of way. De Becker likens this process to assembling the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. We constantly evaluate people’s behaviour without even consciously trying to, but the majority of the signals our brains pick up, we often filter out. Commonly we dismiss danger through misinformation, conditioning and judgement - I’ve made a restraining order, he works at our school, I don’t want to insult him, he loves me. Historically women have been conditioned to ‘be nice’, but the multiple meanings of the word ’No’ in our culture needs to be addressed. This can only change by empowering our daughters and teaching our sons that ’No’ is not a discussion. It’s a sentence.
Ad man vows to bring home brands A NEWSTEAD advertising expert recently appointed to the Communications Council’s Queensland committee intends to bring local iconic brands back to home soil by working collectively with other agencies. The founder and managing Andy Fyffe. partner of local creative advertising agency Khemistry, Andy Fyffe, said he vowed to bring local brands back into the hands of Queensland advertising agencies under his chairmanship. “I want us to win back iconic Queensland brands from interstate agencies, foster connections with other creative industries like software, gaming, film and television, and work with universities and other human capital producers to boost our local talent pool,” Mr Fyffe said. “I also want to see agencies strengthen our bonds with Queensland’s ‘start-up ecosystem’ so that home-grown ventures can take full advantage of local branding and marketing expertise by working together in ways that other regions can’t. “I believe we can achieve this by working together.”
The Politics of Pain - Violence against Women
AS state and federal governments grapple to implement policies to curb the rates of violence against women, the next Politics in the Pub asks for the community’s opinion on who should be responsible for stopping the violence. Held on May 20 from 6pm, at the Brisbane Powerhouse, the event will host expert speakers in the field to address the key factors at play in violence against women and to take direct questions from the community. It is a chance to gain a background knowledge of the multifaceted and complex factors contributing to domestic violence in Australia and to ask the question – where does the responsibility lie?

Time of violence and sacrifice THE end of April and early May are very important times historically. Recently we commemorated the centenary of Anzac Day; the 70th
seniorsvoice by Tony Townsend
anniversary of Germany’s surrender to Allied forces in Europe occurred on May 7; and closer to home the Battle of the Coral Sea raged from May 4-8, 1942. American and Australian naval and air forces halted the Japanese advance for the first time, prevented the seaborne invasion of Port Moresby and saved Australia from invasion, at least for the time being. I was reminded of these events when I attended a ceremony recently at which five veterans - three air force, one army and one navy - were awarded the French Legion d’Honneur aboard a French frigate in Sydney. The French ambassador commented on two world wars fought on French soil and the gratitude felt by his countrymen for the many Australians, and others, who had joined the fight to liberate his country so far from home and their families and friends. Those of us who have experienced
the horrors of war - increasingly not just the older men but now many younger men and women - are only too well aware of the futility of war or violence as a means of resolving a dispute, but sometimes it’s the only avenue available. We can only learn from the lessons of history. In May, the program at New Farm Branch includes: • Friday 15th, Stitch and Bitch group meeting at the library meeting room from 9am to noon. • Later on Friday 15th, dinner at 6pm at the Jakarta Indonesian restaurant in Brunswick St. We particularly welcome anyone interested in National Seniors but unable to attend daytime activities to join us for these monthly dinners. • Following a briefing at the general meeting on May 6, we have a tour of Brisbane Airport organised for Wednesday May 27. • Carmelo Cacciola will be guest speaker/entertainer at the general meeting on Wednesday June 3 at 9.15am for 10am at the Merthyr Uniting Church For further information on any of our activities or to learn more about National Seniors, please call Tony Townsend on 33152523 or go to our website at NSANewFarmBranch.com

Peace painting wins new prize
A PICASSO-inspired artwork that won first prize at the inaugural St Andrew’s War Memorial Hospital Anzac Art competition now hangs permanently in the foyer of the Spring Hill hospital. Brisbane artist Ros Paton said her work, La Colombe, was inspired by Picasso’s lithograph, La Colombe (The Dove), which was the emblem for the 1949 World Peace Congress in Paris. St Andrew’s at Spring Hill has honoured the ANZAC centenary with its inaugural Anzac Art Prize, an occasion of significance to the hospital because it was founded in memory of those who served in the World Wars. Ms Paton has her own studio at Petrie Terrace and also displays at Red Hill Gallery. An exhibition of shortlisted works will hang in one of the main corridors of the Spring Hill hospital until 31 May, with the winning work permanently displayed in St Andrew’s foyer.

Chappelli Cycles celebrated its opening with a visit from Tour de France star Robbie McEwan who presented Alana Dorris her prize of a Vintage Style Single Speed bike in British Racing Green.
Bicycle design gallery opens By Alisa Cork
AUSTRALIA’S first dedicated bicycle design gallery, museum and showroom has been launched in Newstead. Chappelli Cycles hails from the southern states and is very excited to launch their new showroom in a cyclistfriendly Blue Sky Café. The cafe and bicycle gallery together celebrate Australians’ twin loves of cycling and great coffee whilst showcasing of classic and contemporary bicycles from Australia and across the world. Winners of an Australian Design Award in 2012, Chappelli co-founders and owners Pablo Chappelli and Tom Davies are the brains behind Australia’s first bicycle design gallery. Brisbane gallery manager Tom Davies said that after the success of Chappelli’s warehouses in Melbourne and Sydney, opening in Kyabra Street in inner Brisbane was the most obvious move. “We already have a strong reputation amongst people who value quality and design and we thought it was time to bring our unique bicycles to the Brisbane market - but we wanted
to do something different,” Tom said. “We thought a bicycle design gallery and cafe was the perfect venue for a showroom.” The brand has a strong history that began in 1960 when Robert Chappelli, a semi-professional cyclist and engineer with a passion for speed and innovation, designed and built his own racing bikes to take part in the Tour de France qualifiers in England. Robert’s son, Pablo, Chappelli’s cofounder and master industrial-designer, drew inspiration from the same sleek 1960s racers, pursuing his dream of owning his own bicycle company and creating prototypes at the company’s forge and design workshop in Botany. Tom describes the range which includes Fixies, men’s and women’s 3-speeds and the NuVinci as perfect for navigating Brisbane’s expanding bikeways, hidden urban laneways and the South Bank trail, with enough gears to get you up Spring Hill and beyond. To celebrate the opening, Chappelli Cycles commissioned Brisbane artist Gert Geyer to paint a 12m-long mural celebrating Brisbane and its cycling culture.
Continued from page 3> who is acting for Optus and Vodafone. “We are hoping that they abort their plans.” Mrs Cronk said the new 4G mobile station would be five times more powerful than the unit it was to replace atop Coles at 85 Merthyr. She said Holy Spirit families were unsure whether the new station was safe, and were surprised how close it was to the school. “It shines directly into the Prep building.” Mrs Cronk said Education Queensland frowned upon station within 200m of their primary schools but there were no such guidelines for Catholic Education. “For me it was an equality thing. They are more protected than our kids.” Mr Althaus said ARPANSA were constantly evaluating the research in this area and had developed a range of fact sheets on electromagnetic energy to provide advice to the community. The fact sheets can be viewed at: http://goo.gl/LOZCPZ He said that ongoing independent audits by ARPANSA had found the exposure levels from base stations were well below Australia’s safety standard limit.
villagenews EACH week, 200 people globally are diagnosed with MS, adding to the about 2.5 million people living with the condition. Chronic disease affects far more than just the person diagnosed. It can be a steep learning curve and a confusing and emotional time for those closest to the ill person. Taking Control Together written by Teneriffe’s Jillian Kingsford Smith, and to be launched in May, is the companion resource to Taking Control, (May 2013). It explores the relationship between sufferer and supporter, the potential guilt, fear and inability for those closest to the person with MS to control a disease of which so little is known. The book is a comprehensive compilation of interviews of the family, friends and professional carers of people living with MS and will be an important resource demonstrating how others have dealt with a wide range of situations. WHEN a familiar face around New Farm, Johnny Celere, had a fall recently, the local community rallied around him. Johnny suffered a stroke more than 21 years ago, and so the kindness of strangers and medical professionals recently provided welcome relief, as did a new pair of hand-made shoes, which he said had changed his life. After a couple of falls while out and about and several more at home, Johnny was assisted by local GP Dr Leon Kondos. He then spent several days in hospital where he was told of specially made shoes that would provide him with the stability he had been missing for more than two decades. Johnny’s mother, Antonina, cried when, wearing the shoes, he climb the stairs of their home without his walking stick. Johnny said he had so many people to thank including his mum and his girlfriend, Elaina. He is also grateful to Ben and staff of Malouf chemist on Merthyr Rd, the RBH, Tony, Elizabeth and Perry from UBET New Farm, Michael Rochford of Osteopathy on James and Natalie from Blue Care.
$1300 bike pinched in move LATE last month, Gail Russell was busy finalising her move from a unit at 242 Kent St, New Farm, when her Townie bike and car bike carrier were literally stolen out from under her. The bike was stored underneath her unit and chained to a cement pillar. Gail had already vacated the premises and went back to pick up the bike to find it gone. The bike is pale yellow with brown leather seat, bought from New Farm Bikes recently for about $1300. The bike has a black bike rack and front and back hibiscus mudguards and also missing is her black three bike car carrier. If you have seen this bike or carrier, please contact Gail on 0428107042.

Radio royalty John Daley crowned king of the RATS
villagepeople by Gary Balkin
an early morning phone call from 4LG assistant manager, John Knox, who rang 4KQ to speak to the breakfast announcer. John spoke to Knoxy before putting him through and Knoxy asked him if he knew of anyone who wanted to move to western Queensland in an on-air position … and, of course, the young John Daley said he would be delighted to “Go West” … and that’s how it all began!! In the early days before radio, John played in a couple of rock bands, the first of which was The Ramblers, and his second, John Daley & The Rhythm Five played weekly at the Story Bridge Hotel when the elder Deery, Barrie, ran the show. John, 16, played keyboards. John recalled a highlight: “The Ramblers played on the tarmac at Brisbane Airport for the arrival in 1960 of Annette Funicello and the Mouseketeers, with this event being filmed in a direct telecast on Channel 7.” After leaving Villanova College, John set his heart on being a DJ on radio, as he loved and knew his music. That phone call from Knoxy then opened the door on his radio jock career. The former 4BH, 4BK and 4KQ radio announcer, promotions and news director of the 1960s through to the late 1980s, John Daley and his dear wife of 49 years, Lyn, are currently on a 36-day cruise which includes the Pacific Islands, Hawaii and Tahiti. Before they set off, I sat down with John at his Yeronga home to reminisce about Older Brisbane, where City Hall was the tallest building, and the names dropped included places like the then new Tower Mill restaurant, the Lands Office hotel, Lennons in George St, and Lost Brisbane like Cloudland Ballroom, the Bellevue Hotel and the tramway system. From 4LG John moved to Maryborough’s 4MB, where he met his future wife Lyn. Moving back to the big city, he developed his skills quickly, becoming a part of the Top Dogs in Radio crew at 4BH in 1965 - Ben Beckinsale on breakfast, Bill Gates on the drive show, followed by Graham Cherry and John Daley. Other contemporaries at 4BH were George 18

Lovejoy (Mr Football) and Gabby Horan (housewives’ advocate). Other people were recalled, too. Big names of the era such as Lucky Starr of I’ve Been Everywhere, Man; Johnny O’Keefe, The Wild One; George Wallace (Theatre Royal); Queensland’s first faces on TV: Hugh Cornish and Melody Iliffe; Jack Brabham, world champion F1 racing driver; Johnny James of 4BC; Don Seccombe and Brian Cahill of TV; Bill Gates, “BG”, who discovered The Bee Gees, so many more … … In 1968 John had been married two years to Lyn when he and Bill Gates jumped over to 4BK. Now it was John Daley’s Drive Time on 4BK from 4-7 pm, Daley on Sunday, Easy on the Ear, from 8-1pm.

“GO West, young man” was the advice when young men of the 1950s and ’60s asked their elders where they should venture to seek their fortune. John Daley started his radio career at 4KQ as a panel/control operator and in 1962 he moved to 4LG Longreach after

The 4BH top dogs in 1965, John Daley, Bill Gates, Grahame Cherry. It was 1976 when John moved from 4BK into promotions and news director at 4KQ. There he stayed until 1987. The Daley family of four children - Brendan, Matthew, Brooke and Cameron - were growing up and with Brisbane’s World Expo ’88 on the horizon, John Daley became entrepreneurial, launching JD Promotions & Public Relations, which was to be successful beyond their wildest dreams. John and Lyn began this business during the Brisbane Broncos first ever match v Manly in 1988 with a giveaway car from sponsor Ira Berk and signed merchandise from the Broncos’ team. John recalls: “The whole promotion was a huge success. Another of the most successful campaigns was the Queensland Rail Silver Spike Series which was run each year with four heats at various regional shows which culminated with a grand final at the RNA Showgrounds in Brisbane each August. This ran for 13 years.” Following that, Main Roads, then Telecom (Telstra), Queensland Transport, Education Queensland and countless other government departments worked with JD

Their promotional products and corporate uniforms became an integral part of many of Queensland’s largest mining and construction projects, together with sporting groups and countless private companies. With the Daleys proving smart property investors in southeast Queensland, they finally took a step backwards into semi-retirement. Daughter Brooke, works with a prominent group of lawyers in Brisbane, Matthew has merged JD Promotions with his father-in-law’s promotional merchandising business, Brendan’s graphic design work continues, and Cameron moved north to Cairns where he is print manager for Status Signs. John and Lyn have travelled extensively through Europe, gone on countless cruises, and are enjoying life in the family home at Yeronga. John was fortunate to grow up in the lovely suburb of Yeronga, with his late brother Bob and his parents. His grandparents also lived close by, with his grandfather supplying the local nuns with milk, butter and cream from his dairy cows. John and Lyn helped resuscitate the original RATS Club, Radio and Television

They now call it Radio and Television Survivors (RATS) and they meet four times a year at the Pineapple Hotel, Kangaroo Point, with members and guests totalling up to 150 in attendance. John said: “Here are more big names to revive your ‘Happy Days’ memories: Guest speakers over the years include the names as noted earlier in this story, with some of the more popular days being ones featuring Graham Roberts, Wayne “Wayney Poo” Roberts, Jamie Dunn of Agro fame, Kay McGrath, Mike Higgins, Rick Burnett, Carol Lloyd, Ian Skippen, Geoff Mullins, Mike O’Connor, Graham “Robbo” Roberts, Johnny James, John Stainton, David Jull, Michael Beatty, Gavin “The Voice” Wood, and David Greenwood, to name just some. The RATS are now 15 years old and thriving.” John proudly announced: “Our radio guest speaker for our 10th of June RATS lunch will be one of Australia’s radio legends, Bill Gates. Gates and Ekka Speedway promoter, Bill Goode (BG), named the then Speedway band the Bee Gees, the third BG being survivor Barry Gibb.” Sounds like being a full house!

New chief takes reins of Powerhouse
VillageArts by Kerry Gillett The Brisbane Powerhouse has always been built on new beginnings. In the early 1900s the Brisbane City Council built a Powerhouse on the New Farm reach of the Brisbane River to supply electricity for its rapidly expanding tram network. When buses replaced the trams, the Powerhouse was decommissioned (1971). The BCC reacquired the power station in 1989 as a space for arts and culture. They didn’t demolish the power station but created a theatre inside the original space - a significant example of industrial design. This new beginning will combine Fiona Maxwell with artistic director Kris Stewart from June 2015. Fiona, a charming Queenslander, first went to the Powerhouse when it opened in 2000 as a student and fell in love. “Suddenly I was transported to somewhere edgy, inspirational and a window to a world I wanted to be a part of.” She grew up in Far North Queensland and studied Visual Art at Queensland University of Technology. She later received a Masters in Arts Administration from the University of NSW. In 2006 she was awarded an inaugural AbaF Margaret Lawrence Bequest scholarship and a nonprofit Australia Mentorship. Her role models are strong women running big art centres. For example; Louise
Herron at the Sydney Opera House, and Karen Brooks Hopkins at Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. For Fiona, her biggest accomplishments have been The Youth Cultural Program of the 2006 Commonwealth Games, a study tour to New York with 20 chairpersons and CEOs of major arts companies, and her most recent role at Philanthropy Australia as Queensland manager where she established the Queensland office as part of an innovative national strategy. She believes she has achieved her career successes through hard work, a friendly approach, and finding common goals with others. The dynamic pairing of Fiona and Kris Stewart can only lead to bigger and better things for The Brisbane Powerhouse as a producer and presenter of international, national, and local performing arts. Fiona is experienced, knowledgeable, and uniquely suited to interdisciplinary projects involving theatre, music, comedy, dance, film, and visual arts. She gets results and is keen for The Brisbane Powerhouse to compete for audiences with new and exciting involvements. The challenge for the whole team will be how to continue to bring people back to experience live and kicking art. Fiona’s vision for BPH is that in two years it “is a home for diverse communities, a hub for artists, and a destination for cultural tourists … then it’s about taking the Brisbane Powerhouse further afield – out of the building, into the precinct, but also enabling the art that’s created to travel to new destinations, with the support and “stamp” of the BPH.” Fiona’s personal goals are to be a strong feminist influence for her twin two-year-old daughters, whilst occasionally baking biscuits for her husband. She happily declares her professional goal as “I’m about to inherit one of Brisbane’s cultural jewels – surely my goal is to polish it till it shines?”

THE Brisbane Powerhouse board has announced the appointment of Fiona Maxwell, Queensland manager for Philanthropy Australia, as its new chief executive. Chairman David Conry has said, “Fiona’s experience in the cultural sector and philanthropy will greatly benefit Brisbane Powerhouse and we look forward to her joining the team”.

Women in Business Swiss Chocolatier
Federal Member for Brisbane

MURIELLE VUILLEUMIER
HON TERESA GAMBARO MP
JUDY GOODGER
AFTER 17 years as a flight attendant, Murielle Vuilleumier heard many inspiring stories from people she met on her travels and says it is ordinary people doing amazing things that inspire her the most. Now an artisan chocolate maker, Murielle has taken that inspiration to create a long life dream of opening her own Swiss Chocolate business - a place where customers can experience a little piece of Swiss culture, Swiss values and Swiss chocolate history. “I went out of my way to meet and learn from successful chocolatiers in Zurich, Milan and New York as well as train with chocolatiers in Lausanne, Melbourne and Singapore.” Murielle said. “Each gave me valuable insights into running a successful chocolate business.” “I make my chocolates in small batches to intensify the fresh flavours and delicate finishes. Every step is essential to the quality of my collection from the selection of local ingredients to the choice of couverture.” “Being a typical Swiss, I am never satisfied. I am continuously developing new flavours and products to offer my customers. It is important to me that they experience the joy of celebrating with chocolate.” Murielle is appreciative of the support she has received from locals and hopes her business will become a place to share her knowledge and passion for chocolate by offering classes and events.
WHEN Hon. Teresa Gambaro MP successfully won the seat of Brisbane in 2010, she became the first Australian woman to have won the seat since Federation. A politician for over 17 years, Teresa relies heavily on the support of her husband and family and believes her New Farm upbringing instilled strong and enduring values of the importance of family and hard work which have remained throughout her life. Teresa began her career as a senior business executive in the hospitality, personnel and franchising sectors until she was approached by the Liberal Party to stand many years ago, prior to the evolution of the Liberal National Party (LNP). With former Prime Minister John Howard as her mentor, and Liberal Party Deputy Julie Bishop and US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as her inspiration, Teresa works hard to make sure the electorate gets the funding and resources it needs. “My aim is to ensure the interests of constituents are heard and to I continue to work with the same passion and dedication for my electorate as I have always done.” Teresa said. Teresa is a member of a number of parliamentary groups, including the Parliamentary Friends of Dementia, and is also a supporter of Breast Cancer Network Australia, Women’s Network Australia and the Italian Chamber of Commerce. “My door is always open to the many and varied community groups in the electorate,” she said.

Meet the local ladies making a difference! Gravity Zone
Waterlily Australasia
Keystone Private
GEORGINA WATSON
MICHELLE REEVE
KYLIE MCQUIE
A SERIOUS car accident at 16 and several years in and out of hospital gave Georgina Watson the motivation she needed to take her health into her own hands. She began training her body and went to University to learn how the mind and body works. In focussing on ways to become stronger and healthier herself, she found herself helping other people to do the same. Georgina’s business, Gravity Zone, has evolved into a boutique personal training studio concentrating on functional training for health, fitness and weight loss with a strong focus on nutrition. The point of difference for Georgina is her 20 minute express workouts using Whole Body Vibration technology (WBV). Passionate about helping individuals achieve their goals, Georgina and her family have learned to support each other in all areas of life. Hoping to study a PHD in nutrition, Georgina says she will never stop learning or being inspired by people who age well. “I think it’s very important to keep your mind and body active through all phases of life,” Georgina said. “I want to be part of a movement that sees the next generation grow stronger, fitter and living longer, more vibrant lives.” “It’s all about priorities - you need to remember what is important to you and give these things the time and attention they deserve.”
PASSIONATE about natural medicine and aromatherapy, Michelle Reeve launched the spa brand, Waterlily, in 2005 to create a collection of active and ethical products and spa rituals. Her criteria was stringent and unforgiving, using only the highest quality phytonutrients fortified with anti-ageing vitamins, omega serums and the purest aromaceutical essential oils, meticulously formulated to create a collection that would satisfy her own exacting standards. Ten years on, Waterlily proudly continues to flourish as Australia’s premium spa solution stocking to over 100 day spas and salons nationally. “To celebrate our 10th birthday milestone, we have opened the first Waterlily Concept Store in the luxury shopping and lifestyle precinct on James Street,” Michelle said. “Waterlily is local at heart, but global in inspiration.” The store has been designed to capture the Waterlily spa experience with guests offered an aromatherapy compress and herbal tea while experiencing the collection at the marble sensory bar. Michelle’s formulations are thoughtfully produced locally in Brisbane using traditional artisan crafting techniques. Each product is made fresh each month from globally sourced botanical ingredients. “This season we are extremely delighted with our Vino Therapy Spa Facial infused with Shiraz grapes, antioxidant resveratrol and organic cacao,” Michelle said. “Our Concept Store VIP’s will be rewarded with this complimentary treatment when they spend $500 on skin or body care”.
ENTREPRENEURIAL spirit is clearly in Kylie McQuie’s DNA, having started her first business venture in 2008 when she became frustrated by the lack of personal care and attention traditional accounting firms and advisors gave their customers. In 2011, she co-founded LOQ Group, a familiar feature on Macquarie Street, providing a multi-family office and outsourced CFO services. The success of LOQ Group has led to the recent, unique and exciting merger with Keystone Private, Queensland’s number one multi-family office. “The community’s understanding of what a multi-family office is, has been a challenge for both LOQ Group and Keystone Private over the years,” Kylie explained. “A multi-family office is about the transition of values, wealth and legacy from one generation to the next. The need for these services is typically triggered by new and unfamiliar issues arising from windfall gains of profit, inheritance, property, or the potential loss of these.” Whist LOQ Group has now relocated to join Keystone Private in the CBD, Kylie and the team take with them a proud local community spirit. “The timely, discrete, expert, unbiased advice and support from a trusted adviser is critical,” she said. “You need someone who understands you, supports your intentions and your vision for the future of your business interests and your family.” “It’s about protecting and preserving what you have spent a lifetime creating.”

NATALIE STRIJLAND
MIRELLA COE
SUSAN COTTRELL
NATALIE Strijland knows that establishing quality, long-term client relationships requires continuous personalised service for the clients of her busy New Farm-based law firm. Natalie commenced her professional career at NR Barbi in 1997 as a clerk and she went on to practise as a solicitor before becoming partner in 2007. She believes her firm has a large following of clients both locally and throughout Australia because they deliver cost effective, intelligent legal advice and solutions. “We have local and practical experience and clients appreciate having a solicitor they can phone and speak with at their convenience,” Natalie said. “Our firm continues to grow because our client base continues to grow,” Natalie said. “We balance client expectations with the best legal outcomes and keep the client informed at all stages. We work for both larger corporate organisations and individuals.” While Natalie specialises in the area of civil litigation including commercial, building and construction, contracts, partnership disputes and mediation, NR Barbi also offers other areas of legal advice, from the very simple to the most complex. Natalie says that finding a good work/life balance can be difficult when you run a busy law practice with two children, but she enjoys the challenge. “We have excellent staff and so it is a matter of time management and being good at both work and family.”
TOGETHER with her business partners, Mirella Coe is dedicated to working with her clients to achieve their financial picture and their long term goals. The Financial Dimensions Group was born in New Farm over 11 years ago and since joining the team in 2012, Mirella has seen the business grow from two to five financial planners. “I work with wonderful business partners Denise Ryder and Alan Keal, who together have over 25 years of experience in Financial Planning,” Mirella said. “It’s all about helping clients to attain loans, insurance, and superannuation, and also to make sound investments, and motivate best practice in money management and retirement planning.” Mirella, a Certified Practising Accountant (CPA), has been in finance for over 20 years, moving into financial planning five years ago to combine her head for finance and love of working with people. Her drivers for success are based around relationships with her clients and she finds it truly rewarding to help a client reach a great financial outcome. Mirella also believes her volunteer work at her childrens’ schools and her interest, together with business partner, Denise, in women’s business forums is an important part of her community work. Having undergone renovations recently at their business premises in Lamington St, Mirella and her partners would like to welcome more locals to visit them and learn about their services.
OWNER of The Body Refinery since 2007, Susan Cottrell believes healthy movement can transform a person’s vitality and fitness. “The Body Refinery is a unique environment where physiotherapy, pilates and other strength and conditioning activities combine to optimise movement for a healthy fit and fulfilling life,” Susan said. Originally her studios only offered pilates and supported a staff of four, but the business has grown to incorporate physiotherapy, massage, GYROTONIC, CoreAlign and POWERPLATE – now with a staff of 22. Susan runs programs especially to support the community she loves, including The PINC Pilates program for women at any stage of their cancer journey and a The PD Warrior program for those people in the early stages of Parkinson’s disease. “I feel it is important to offer theses programs so that everyone has access to services to improve their quality of life.” Susan moved to New Farm after following husband Lachlan from Sydney and instantly loved the village and the community vibe. Women’s Health Physiotherapy is also a special interest for Susan. “Having had two children myself I am now well aware of the changes that women experience during in pregnancy and birth and I am passionate about ensuring women have access to Women’s health physiotherapists.” Ever community minded, Susan’s goal is to ensure everyone can experience the joy of healthy movement.

AYDA SHABANZADEH
MORTGAGE expert Monique Higgins was originally a mobile broker for Aussie Home Loans and now owns the New Farm store. She takes great pleasure in finding the right home loan for people and in the process, saving them valuable time and money. She also assists clients with commercial loans, self-managed super fund loans, personal loans and insurance. Monique remembers a discussion with her accountant about business ideas several years ago when he suggested that she look into mortgage broking. “I had already used an Aussie Broker for my home loans and had a great experience,” Monique said. “It seemed like a good fit for me, and the rest is history.” Monique’s main driver for success is to provide a positive customer experience. “My aim is to make the entire process of taking out a loan through Aussie New Farm as stress-free as possible,” she said. “I get great satisfaction when clients refer me to their family and friends.” Monique says she is inspired by other women who have overcome challenges and are successful in their professions. “I am passionate about my career and putting in the effort to have a successful business is pleasurable and not a chore,” she said. Monique spends a lot of her leisure time on the Gold Coast with her two children and has visions of more overseas travel and also opening another store in the future.
A CLINICAL nutritionist, biochemist, teacher and researcher for 20 years, Elizabeth (Beth) Steels firmly believes success comes when there’s a healthy balance between family, lifestyle and work. Elizabeth’s company, IHG Trials, conducts clinical trials on nutraceuticals and herbal medicines to determine their effectiveness and to understand their biochemistry. Elizabeth says her supportive family underpins her passion and interest in preventative and natural medicines. “Success for me comes at different levels,” Elizabeth said. “Firstly being the best parent I can be and to bring my children up to follow their dreams.” “It’s also about finding new information that contributes to a healthy world. I get a lot of satisfaction in helping people find solutions to health problems.” Clinical trials on natural medicines is now where her interests lay and Elizabeth is currently looking for people to assist her studies on treatments for ageing-related problems in menopause, joint pain and for men with prostate problems. “Personally, my goal is to stay fit and healthy and watch my children all grow into great adults, and one day I would love to set up an educational health retreat,” Elizabeth said. “Professionally, I want to continue researching, teaching and writing and helping people find the safest solutions to health problems.” People interested in participating in clinical trials can email Elizabeth at clinic@ihgtrials.com.au
AS a leading Australian real estate expert, Ayda Shabanzadeh is inspired by people who are passionate about what they do and contribute to society regularly. She believes that her professional work is strengthened by a purpose and by how much she gives back to the community. Dividing her time between work as the owner of renowned inner-city property advisory firm, Grow Consulting Group, and dedicating herself to various prominent charities, Ayda finds both experiences equally rewarding. Grow Consulting Group is a leading 360 property company in Brisbane. Specialising in property investment, mortgage broking and site acquisitions, Grow Consulting Group gives buyers access to arguably the largest range of the city’s forthcoming projects particularly in Newstead and Teneriffe. Ayda’s future business goal is to continue developing Grow Consulting Group into Australia’s best boutique property agency. Grow Consulting Group works towards this by continuing to help as many people as possible gain knowledge about the property market so that they can invest expertly. “Since the company began over 10 years ago we’ve assisted thousands of clients and developed numerous industry contacts,” Ayda said. “Alongside many other factors, these are key reasons why we have established an exceptional business reputation.” Requested for expert comment by journalists from News Limited, Fairfax Media, Channel Nine and Australian Property Investor, Ayda should be your first port of call if you’re looking to astutely purchase property in inner-city Brisbane.

I make no apologies to those whose sensibilities are so refined they find the above statement offensive. Instead, I would invite them to cast a discerning
eye over the vulgarity that is fast becoming the majority of the airborne public. Once, on a flight out of Singapore, I sat next to a young man wearing board shorts, rubber thongs and a T-shirt. “What’s wrong with that?” I hear you ask. After all, it was 32C outside and with the humidity at a debilitating 90 per cent, why would he wear anything else? Our destination just happened to be Amsterdam. And when I consulted my iPhone for an update on the weather expected for our arrival, it said we were to anticipate a balmy -1C! When I drew his attention to the shocking disparity between his dress and the inadequate protection it offered against a freezing Dutch winter, his response can be only described as brave, if not, in my opinion, foolhardy. “She’ll be fine mate. If it’s brass monkey weather, I’ll just chuck on the wet suit,” he boldly proclaimed. While I’m prepared to overlook inappropriate dress I can’t employ an equally insouciant approach towards

villagenews personal hygiene. The reality of modern air travel is it’s relatively inexpensive and, as a consequence, the airlines pack us in as one would sardines in a can. More often than not, you’re sharing a space with a stranger in proximity more intimate than if you were sharing a bed with them! And if that person is less than particular regards personal hygiene, you find an already uncomfortable situation made so much worse by the presence of acrid and pervasive body odour. Should anybody begin a journey already ‘on the nose’, you can imagine how hellish it is for the poor soul seated next to them during an extended 12-hour flight. My friend Hebe is quite dismissive of such niceties. “Darling, the solution is obvious. Travel first class.” This magniloquent observation from Hebe quite puts my teeth on edge. In fact, it makes me so angry my cheeks hurt. But before I can present a compelling argument, Hebe is quick to deflect any boring bleating about affordability, by interjecting with the helpful suggestion, “Just take a sleeping tablet, perhaps two, with a vodka soda. In 10 minutes you’ll be out like a light.” I protest: “I can’t do that! You know how alcohol and barbiturates cause me to snore. So explosive is my

I, of course, can’t entertain such lofty ideals, for to do so would mean always having to stay at home. So for me at least, the excitement of contemplating an overseas travel is always tempered by the awfulness of using air travel as the modus operandi to arrive at my holiday destination. tonyjones@newfarmvillagenews.com.au

DEEP in the heart of the Valley on Alfred St is a place time may well have forgotten. The Dutch Courage Officers’ Mess is exactly what you would have imagined as a welcome place of respite for Dutch and British soldiers stationed on army bases across India, Africa and Asia. This is the place where Gin and Tonic is synonymous with East meets West. A little bit stylish and a little bit classy was the intention of owner Matt Hilan, whose gin bar is one of the largest in Queensland. But that’s not all; the cocktail selection is as immense as his bartenders’ skills. This place is about to open an upstairs eatery with a new chef and an African-inspired menu. Definitely a must try.
Iconic e’cco E’CCO bistro is renowned for its elegant atmosphere and modern Australian dishes by award-winning executive chef and author Philip Johnson. By all accounts, e’cco is a Brisbane icon and its creator has poured his heart and soul into this interpretation of a traditional bistro. Its menu is a constantly evolving and the Fixed Price Lunch is no exception. For $39.50, choose from entrees of either seared ocean trout with fennel puree, or sweetcorn soup with coriander, green onion and tabasco oil. The mains include angus minute steak, shoestring fries and jus de Paris or an open brandy chicken pie served with shallots, peas, bacon and tarragon. A nice cool glass of Prophet’s Rock ‘Rocky Point’ pinot gris rendered my meal a fait accompli. Spoil mum on Mother’s Day with Philip Johnson’s divine three course lunch for $85pp.

It’s proving very popular among the ‘carb conscious’ with less than 9g of carb. Add a side helping of seasoned zucchini or sweet potato chips and it’s one step better. Present your Judith Wright Centre performance tickets before or after the show and have two for the price of one deal at Grill’d Fortitude Valley, 461 Brunswick St.

Wonderful Wunderbar
THIS bakery and bistro on Vernon Tce is a German bakery by day and bistro by night. The bar menu is chock full of European boutique beers and ciders and the wine list includes Austrian and German drops to accompany a range of gourmet pies, pretzels, arancini balls, cakes and pastries. Their specialty is ever present 11-inch German sausage - bockwurst, bratwurst, cheese kransky or spicy knackwurst served on a roll with sauerkraut. Polish off the meal with a gelato or German pastry.
Subterranean bar experience
HEYA is Japanese for room and it’s also now an innovative multi-venue micro bar precinct in Fortitude Valley. A wok’s throw from Chinatown, owners Andrew Baturo, Denis Sheahan and Paul Piticco have transformed this basement into a funky Asian alleyway. Inspired by a bar-hopping experience through the alleyways of Tokyo, Heya is a collection of intimate rooms with a live space featuring fresh new acts, house bands and Brisbane’s best DJs. With not one but two kitchens serving up pan-Asian street food, Heya sports four intimate specialty bars and plenty of cool nooks to settle in for the night.

Pixie’s Neverland
IT was Pixie’s childhood imagination that inspired her to totally change her life direction a couple of years ago from corporate ladder climber to the proud owner of her dream, the Lost Boys Cafe in Fortitude Valley.
community cravings by Alisa Cork
Pixie has her parents to thank for growing up believing she could do anything she put her mind to and for growing up believing in fairytales, which is possibly why she found herself completely unsatisfied by her corporate fashion job and yearning for something she really believed in. “I found myself disinterested the daily city commute, business attire, policies, procedures, corporate clients and sales targets,” Pixie said. “I realised that the beautiful unrealistic place filled with dreams and aspirations had become harder to find and I started dreading Mondays and looking forward to Fridays.” Refocusing her energies on her dreams using positive thoughts and
inspirational quotes, Pixie made the change from the 9 to 5, plunging headlong into what would be the first of several business ventures in Fortitude Valley. “There were a lot of tears and sleepless nights deciding if it was the right thing to leave my secure job of 5 years, but I did and I don’t regret it for a second,” she said. Pixie came up with the idea for Lost Boys as a result of wanting a place that had really good food – not just tasty but fresh, vegetarian, ethically produced and sourced and wherever possible, organic. “I wanted good food and drinks that didn’t hurt the environment.. a place that always tries its best to have a positive impact on people by encouraging positive change, thinking and action.” With very little money to fund the project, she soon found the startup capital she needed working 70 hour weeks for eight months straight, with very little down time. Over those months she researched, prioritised, learned as much as she could by making mistakes and finding solutions to problems she did not even know existed. She stayed focused and true to her dreams, writing Lost Boys across her bedroom wall to remind her what she was working so hard for. “I truly am a supporter of ‘do what
Pixie in her newly opened Tree House tapas bar in Bakery Lane. you believe in and believe in what you do’ and if you do what you believe in, I believe you will be good at it,” Pixie said. Since opening in mid-2014, The Lost Boys, Fortitude Valley and its trademark Neverland tree stretching across the eves and laden with fairy lights has gained momentum and popularity. It is no wonder, as the moment you enter, you feel transported to another time and realm, feeling like a child again. Pixie together with her father built and created the whimsical interior with its timber ramparts. It really feels like a
magical place. Pixie has since added two more businesses to her portfolio which are every bit as close to her heart as Lost Boys. The Tree House tapas bar adjacent to The Lost Boys, and Skull It Juice bar are both situated in the newly developed and opened Bakery Lane in Brunswick St. Pixie’s advice to others who want to make a change in their life is to “Dream big and don’t be afraid to tell people about it. The more you say it aloud, that little bit closer your dream is to becoming a reality and the more likely it is to come back to you.”

O’Chee’s local exhibition
RORY O’Chee, a talented Brisbane based photographer whose work is noteworthy, not just for his youth, but for the unique “outsider” perspective he brings to his photography is holding an exhibition ‘Australian Summer – Nature’s beauty - up close and personal’ at ART 101 Gallery in May. ART101 Gallery owner, Melissa Howard, said Rory, 16, was the most awarded junior photographer in Australia in 2014, with a string of wins and commendations at regional, national and international levels. Rory O’Chee was originally attracted to photography as a medium to express his creativity, since his fine motor skills are restricted by his Down Syndrome. Once he realised what could be achieved with the camera, Rory set about using photography to “tell stories without using words”, and with a strong desire to “tell the stories other people don’t see.” 17th – 24th May at 25 James Street or www.art101.com.au

Like most Brisbanites I spent much of April rejoicing the fabulous traffic conditions due to school holidays and so many locals leaving the city to hit the beaches. When you hit the coasts as a travelling ‘real estate tragic’ there’s always the mandatory walk past the local agents window, the collection of some brochures, a couple of cheeky open house’s and finally the idol discussion over crumbed snapper about the merits of buying a place at the coast. Brisbane properties, like most capital cities on the Australian east coast, is experiencing strong market conditions off the back of buyer competition. These buyers are fuelled by confidence due mainly to low interest rates meaning more affordability and in some cases positive returns. But this wave of confidence is only slowly starting to build on our coasts, certainly hasn’t picked up that much speed and isn’t looking like breaking anytime soon. Over the past couple of years I have kept my eye on 3 coastal lifestyle locations: Noosa to the north, Point Lookout on the island and Currumbin on the South Coast. Here’s a couple of facts from 2014. In those markets in the price range of $400k - $550k Noosa had 60 sales, Currumbin had 23 & Point Lookout had 4 for the year. It surprises most people to know that well located and good yielding properties sell in these areas in that price range. Especially when you consider that this month the first of the banks announced a 3.99% locked for 3yrs interest rate! So whats available in these markets today? Has it all dried up (I hear you ask eagerly)?!? Here is what’s available in that price range today, Noosa has 52 properties, Currumbin has 14 & there’s 21 over on Straddie at Point Lookout.

When you look at the amount of property for sale in these markets today and compare it to the total number of sales over the whole of last year, you can see that there’s still plenty of opportunities available. But they won’t last. People are hitting these windows, opens and auctions every weekend and even more in public holiday season. So if buying a coastal property is on your long term bucket list it could be time to make some decisions. As you’re pouring the vinegar on your deep fried package of coastal goodness, consider that if a beachside abode is on your list that $500k on interest only at 3.99% is about $400per week. Now ask yourself ‘what did I just pay for the weekend stay?!’ Every real estate purchase should be considered a long term prospect, but many coastal properties are bought on impulse and are not put to work. If you’re going to buy ‘one day’ then getting on board one when prices are down, rates are down and competition is down sounds like the perfect set to me.

Agency opening shows confidence TV property judge John McGrath had opened an agency in Brunswick St, New Farm. At a breakfast launch at the Emporium Hotel, Mr McGrath spoke about his confidence in the New Farm and Teneriffe property market, telling the audience that he had considered his move into Queensland for John McGrath. some time. "I believe this is one of the pockets that is the fastest going ahead and, based on capital growth across Australia, we think this is the market to invest in," Mr McGrath said. Mr McGrath said the property market was starting to see growth but not as much as it would over the next few years. "People are coming to Queensland to take advantage of the value gap. The Brisbane story is strong and we are getting ready for the demand," he said. "We think the market is in overall recovery, but southeast Queensland is poised for growth."
