What’s next for historic Engine Room? TIMOTHY SWANSTON Brisbane City Council has voted on the successful tender to take occupancy of the historical waterfront Engine Room, which is presently undergoing an $864,000 facelift. Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has granted a nine-year lease to the Uniting Hands Foundation Australia (UHFA), with a percentage of their profits from the café being put back into the running of their charity. “Uniting Hands have proven experience in the restaurant industry, already operating the 88FortyEight Bar and Restaurant Out of one of the Brunswick Street Mall pods, and will be offering traineeships for vulnerable

people within the community at the Engine Room café,” Cr Quirk said. “This commitment will see a twofold benefit for the community, with a new café and an organisation giving back to disadvantaged members of the community.” Council received two tenders for running the site, which was announced in 2014 to be turned into a restaurant, met by significant protest and legal action of locals. The second tenderer, Footprints Inc in Brisbane, placed a non-compliant bid for a community space, but was not chosen due to UHFA’s bid receiving a higher “value for money” percentage rating. Footprints CEO Cherylee Treloar said the most important outcome of the process was that the community benefitted from the enterprise. “After long consultation with local residents’ groups and individuals, we believed that our proposal met the interests of the local community,” Ms Treloar said. “Our track record is well known and proven as a not for profit and we also currently deliver another social enterprise that significantly benefits people with mental illness,” she said. “If the needs of the community are being met by whoever was successful in this process we will be satisfied.”

Selfish and small-minded fence … and for what? village comment MIKE O’CONNOR Expect further developments this month in the controversy over the decision by the Mactaggarts Place body corporate to fence off public access to the river walk. I understand that unit owners in the complex have been given notice that a submission has been made to the State Government Office of the Commissioner for Body Corporate and Community Management seeking to have the decision overturned. The submission further seeks for the fence to be removed at the body corporate’s expense. The fence was erected quickly in July, the expenditure of $30,000 for its installation approved at a body corporate meeting attended by only 17 of the 155 unit owners. I am told Mactaggarts Place unit holders have been asked to authorise the further expenditure of body corporate funds to engage lawyers to make a submission to the Office of

the Commissioner seeking to retain the fence. At least three submissions seeking to have the fence removed are thought to have been made. The Brisbane City Council requested that the body corporate reconsider its decision to build the fence but it refused to do so. The building of the fence, the council said, was not an action it supported or encouraged. Hundreds of people signed a petition circulated by the Teneriffe Progress Association calling for the removal of the fence. The fence stands as a symbol of the selfish determination of a few to bar decades-long access to the river in the apparent belief that in doing so, they will increase the value of their properties. It is an exercise in small mindedness and runs counter to the community spirit that is a hallmark of life in the Newstead-Teneriffe-New Farm neighbourhood. The district is undergoing significant change. It would be in everyone’s interests to work towards improving rather than diluting the quality of life that we enjoy.

Sales shine under stars Auctioning has never been more dazzling than Ray White New Farm and Ray White Spring Hill’s Auction Under the Stars event. Principal of Ray White New Farm Matt Lancashire said the quality of properties for sale on the night was “phenomenal”, from affordable living to some of Brisbane’s best luxurious properties. “We’ve ended up with 24 auctions for the evening so this will be our biggest event to date,” Mr Lancashire said. “It’ll be a fast-paced, exciting evening, running the auctions consecutively,” he said. The two-and-a-half hour, biannual auction event kicks off at 6pm on

Wednesday November16 in the rear courtyard of Ray White New Farm office on Brunswick Street. “The great thing about this event is that if you’re in the market looking to purchase or if you’re looking to sell in the future, it will give you a holistic snapshot as to what’s happening in the inner-city Brisbane market,” Mr Lancashire said. Bidders must register before the event through the agent for the property you are interested in. Spectators are encouraged to come along and bring a friend and if you’re looking to bid on multiple properties give Ray White New Farm a call on 3254 1022.

Party with Gloria The Teneriffe Progress Association’s (TPA) social calendar is shaping with a BBQ being held on the Riverwalk next to Gloria’s on Sunday November 13. The BBQ will commence at 11am, a great excuse to mingle with the community over a snag. The TPA will also be holding Christmas drinks, following their

meeting a few days later, on Wednesday November 16. “If you’ve got time to hang on afterwards, bring a bottle and we’ll have some great conversation and great company,” TPA president Ben Pritchard said. Full details on www. teneriffeprogress.org.au

Top up terminal the go for locals Catching public transport in the Peninsula just got a whole lot easier with the installation of a go card topup terminal at Merthyr Road News. The terminal is available over the counter, with owner Bob Spence delighted by its installation. “People are here all the time looking for a go card top-up,” Mr Spence said. “It’s good to have this facility available. The area here is one of the biggest public transport spots in Brisbane,” he said.

Grace Grace, MP for Brisbane Central, lobbied for months on behalf of local residents to have the terminal installed. “There is a black spot for top-up facilities here in New Farm, making it unnecessarily difficult to use the public transport network,” Ms Grace said. “Bob Spence’s newsagency now offers customers the peace of mind of knowing they can top up their go cards and not be caught out when they are in a hurry. “Thanks very much to Grace for her efforts, it wouldn’t have happened if not for her,” Mr Spence said. A full list of go card retailers can be found at www.translink.com.au or by phoning 13 12 30.

New Farm’s iconic shopping precinct, Merthyr Village, is currently undergoing exciting changes, to provide greater convenience and make it more of a destination. Matthew Sorbello from Merthyr Village Centre Management, said that there had been only limited changes to the centre in the past 20 years. “Our focus on convenience, services and creating a village atmosphere with a strong sense of community will never change,” Mr Sorbello said. “In saying that, we do need to keep up to date with the ongoing trends in the retail space, and there is no doubt there has been a shift to foodoriented experiences,” he said. To minimise disruptions to trade, the works will be staged over the next five months with expected completion by March/April of next year.

With a new President at the helm, the traditionally quiet achievers at Rotary New Farm are escalating their community presence and calling for more members. Incoming Rotary New Farm president Mark Mitchell (pictured) is a committed community organiser, looking to expand into and engage the Peninsula community. “Because we’re a new club, it is now at the time of our life to really lay down some roots. We’ve been feeling our way, but now we’ve got to get on with creating our own traditions,” Mr Mitchell said. Over the past year Mr Mitchell said that the Rotary Club has been involved with local events such as the Crack-a-Jack Attack, Bounceback Handball and the national Rotary “Hat Day”, which raised funds for mental health research.

Rotary Clubs are not just about fundraising – they are also about effective community contribution. Because of this, Rotary New Farm is seeking new members who are excited to get involved in the local community. “We’re looking for people who want to contribute to the local community, learn more about how they can help create peace and understanding in the world,” Mr Mitchell said. “You get that sense of doing something for your local community and doing something that’s worthwhile. “If you have something that is a driving issue for you, there are so many avenues that you can throw your weight behind.” Contact Mr Mitchell on 0420 906 608.

One of the main drivers for the shifts in the centre has been the desire of the owners of the New Farm Deli to expand their kitchen deli and seating facilities. New Farm Deli owner Maria Anello said they were excited about the changes that are coming. “We’re absolutely looking forward to the expansion of the deli – it’ll be great when we move and settle in to the new kitchen space,” Ms Anello said. “Despite the expansion of the New Farm Deli, we’ve been able to maintain our unique tenancy mix, while finding a great new home for the much-loved New Farm Editions.” Merthyr Village Centre Management also confirmed that popular Peninsula handmade luxury food store, Dello Mano will be operating in the centre from November.

No rights? That’s right! Ten years ago I bought a small cottage in New Farm that I fell in love with because it had character and a small sunny private backyard. My cottage was one of four in a row. Each cottage was similar, yet different and all had character, which added to the heritage style of my street. But since January all that has changed. Today, the cottage next to me towers above, blocking my solar cells in winter (costing me significant money in rebates) and shading my house with its solid walls of brick and black timber. At the back, next to my once sunny backyard a Besser-block edifice is

being constructed less than one foot from my fence. I understand that the second house being constructed will stretch 9.5 metres tall and boast a rooftop deck. My cottage and its yard already seem to be shrinking in the shadow of these ugly edifices. But it seems after ringing various people at Council that there is nothing I can do. Apparently the buildings next to me meet all the state building codes. I have lost sunlight and visual amenity. I have lost solar rebates. I have lost my sense of privacy. I have likely lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in property value. And despite all this, it appears I have absolutely no rights. Apparently, I did not ever have to be consulted about this. Apparently, my neighbours are perfectly within their rights to build two towering buildings on a tiny block of land, jammed up close to my home and land. Apparently they do not have to compensate me at all for my loss of solar income, for my loss of sunlight, for my loss of amenity. I am aware from friends and family living in Sydney and Melbourne, that such a development would never pass State or Council rules in those cities.

Brisbane ratepayers should be consulted about such significant neighbouring developments and we should have rights to existing sunlight and visual amenity. Winner Samara Carmichael

Thanks for fete support The parents and friends of Holy Spirit School would like to sincerely thank everyone who contributed to the 2016 Spring Fair and for supporting our cause. The support from the Village News and all the local businesses, families and individuals was overwhelming. We would like to thank all the parents, grandparents and friends who volunteered to run stalls, bake cakes and create crafty goods to sell. We would also like to thank all the teachers, along with our parishioners and Archbishop who let us “borrow” his backyard on the day. A huge thank-you to all the wonderful people who purchased a ticket in our raffle and the many local businesses who donated prizes, especially Merthyr Village and James Street.

Five prizes in our raffle were drawn on the day. Two New Farm residents were among the winners (one a Holy Spirit family), a university student from Dalby who is studying in Brisbane, and residents from Ascot and Indooroopilly. The money raised from the Holy Spirit Spring Fair 2016 is invaluable to this growing community. It will fund air conditioning to classrooms and terrace stairs as part of the new classroom building project, which is due to be completed for the start of the 2017 school year. Generations of New Farm children will be the beneficiaries of all the hard work, commitment and generosity of this wonderful community. We are very grateful. One of New Farm’s longest-serving community leaders, Concetta Mazzocato OAM (pictured), has finally received her Order of Australia medal. The medal was awarded in June for her continued contributions to the Italian and Catholic communities beginning in 1952. The award was presented by Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey AC on September 20. Concetta (known in New Farm as “Connie”) founded the Italian Youth Club in 1952 to help integrate the Italian migrants in Brisbane, and founded the Catholic Women’s Association in Brisbane and was president for 14 years. “Receiving the award was a really, really big surprise,” said Connie. “I knew I couldn’t tell anyone until it had been announced, or everyone would know!” Connie is a regular at the Merthyr Bowls Club, which supported her ever since she told them about the award.

A MALOUF PHARMACIES INITIATIVE

“Eventually, I told the Bowls Club and everyone was very excited. “They were very good to me and bought me beautiful flowers but I didn’t really know how important it was.” One referee for Connie’s nomination, Santina Musumeci, said: “Connie’s award also honours the 1950s Italian migrants’ contribution to this community, and to Australian society.” Connie said she was overwhelmed by the award and grateful for those who have supported her. “Sometimes when you’re always around good people, you can do better than on your own.”

Teneriffe to Rio an Olympic dream BY JAMES JESSUP Teneriffe local Rebecca Tavo had no idea she would grow up to be one of the most successful rugby players in the world. She was born with a fierce competitiveness that quickly developed into a passion for sporting excellence. When Rebecca was 15 she was selected to play touch football at state level for Western Australia. Shortly after that she was selected for the Australian team, which prompted her move to Brisbane, where she lives today. Rebecca then moved from touch football to rugby sevens. Touch football, she said, provided the skills to differentiate her from the rest of the rugby world, and now, at 33, she has played world-class rugby for two nations.

NEWS Thanks to her dual-citizenship, Rebecca has captained the Australian Sevens at a World Cup and most recently represented Fiji at the Rio Olympics. “Sport is my life,” she said. But sport isn’t the whole story. Although she feels at home on the field, it hasn’t stopped her from excelling in other aspects of her life. She was the first female train driver for BHP in Australia. She has balanced a life across Australia with a sport that requires dedication and constant conditioning. I asked her how she managed to maintain her athletic condition while driving trains out west. “I did what I had to do,” she tells me, “there aren’t any gyms out in the country, just like Fiji.” There’s a clothesline far from Brisbane, she says, that rests on an angle due to her using it for chin-ups. There are old pieces of rail-line that she once cut holes in and used for dumbbells. Rebecca has crafted herself in the gym of Australia. So how did the once captain of the Australian side and up playing for a rival squad? Rebecca took a two-year break from rugby after 2013. It began with a holiday to Fiji.

New Farm Scouts on the lookout

I didn’t feel like an Olympian until I was on that field. - REBECCA TAVO

Rebecca was going for a walk with her uncle when they stumbled across the Fiji squad training, the coach immediately recognised her and asked her if she wanted to play. It seems that the allure of the sporting challenge was just too strong for her to say no, because shortly after that she was donning the Fijian colours, running out under the stadium lights of Rio De Janeiro. Although her father is Fijian, she never planned to be playing for Fiji, nor did she plan to be in the Olympics up against the team that she used to captain: Australia. I asked her what it was like to be in that situation. “Australia is the best team in the world, and I love a challenge.”

It was a challenge that saw her live the dream of many, the dream of becoming an Olympian. “I didn’t feel like an Olympian until I was on that field,” she says. “You do what you have to do, and it was a great thing to be able to play against the best team in the world.” The Fijian women’s team didn’t end up beating Australia but it sparked an entirely new fan-base for Rebecca, as now she is recognised everywhere she goes for being a part of the Fijian rugby team. “Rugby is before God for Fijians,” she said. “People from Fiji always manage to find me anywhere in the world.” She says she won’t stop until something happens, or God says no.

Local scouts Clea and Ainhoa

Renowned for everyday adventure and youth skills development, the Brisbane Central Scouts Group based at New Farm State School is looking to expand its member base before the new year. The group is inviting adventurers aged 6-14 to join the group, which chairman Mr Os Blacker said focused on more than just “knot tying”. “Activities done recently in our group include outdoor abseiling, camping, visiting a sailing boat, visiting an ambulance station, various crafts, Aboriginal culture night performance, science night, storytelling and much more,” Mr Blacker said. “Scouting has a strong emphasis on youth member leadership, which aims to promote responsibility.” The group is also calling for interested adult volunteers, with or without a scouting background, to help the group in various capacities. Senator pushes for petition signatures A petition has been lodged with the Brisbane City Council for safer crossing facilities at the busy Brunswick St and Martin St intersection. Senator Claire Moore, whose office is at Central Brunswick, lodged the petition on the council website to make the intersection clearer for motorists and safer to pedestrians. “In my years of being in this area it’s really brought home to me just how dangerous that corner is,” Senator Moore said. The intersection currently has two signs that signal “give way to pedestrians” but Senator Moore said they were inadequate and did not manage the intersection effectively.

“If pedestrians see the signs they think they have every right to step out, but you are so busy as a motorist getting your turn, the last thing that you see are two tiny signs that say ‘give way to pedestrians’,” Senator Moore said. “You see people all the time waiting on the intersection for minutes and minutes and minutes on end to get access to keep walking. “When you have such a busy walkway, with people with various levels of mobility, I think it is inevitable that someone will be hit.” The petition will most likely go to council to investigate a way to manage the intersection better.

Goodbye Dad village view BETH J LEACH

Last Thursday my father died in my arms, but it’s OK. We both knew death wasn’t far away and we journeyed there together. Within our culture we struggle to talk about death. Some spend their lives seeking eternal life yet wouldn’t know what to do with themselves on a spare afternoon. We are born and then (to me, after that) there is nothing more personal than death, yet legally we have no power of choice. I was close to Dad and a diligent daughter and what I witnessed as old age became more ravenous for his strength was the cycle of life at its most gut wrenching, indiscriminate and raw. Dad suffered in the last stage of his life and it became a battle, as regular readers of my column will know. His balance was a constant stress to him. He was a bleeder due to his

heart medication and the thinness of his skin. His mental health copped a belting too. But he was still as sharp as a tack! He was funny, humble and caring and I loved him. We all did. We knew from his latest blood tests that the situation was serious. His doctor let us know what the end could look like and he decided not to go back to hospital. I’m so glad he didn’t. We had a few days. I sat on his bed and we chatted and laughed. On the day he died he waited for me to arrive from Brisbane. He suffered kidney failure and went into cardiac arrest. We were alone and I never left his side, constantly reassuring him that it was going to be all right, that I loved him 1000 times over as did all his family and friends and that it was OK to go. I stroked his face, kissed his cheeks, held his hand tightly. With his last breath he looked into my eyes and I could see he was looking over the edge at peace. I’ll always have that to cherish and am honoured and grateful that I could support him in his final hour. Through dad’s death I have a deeper understanding of life and once again thank my father for his gifts.

Vernon Terrace tree removal request Recently Council was asked by the Body Corporate at Winchcombe Carson Woolstores, to look at removal of three street trees in front of their property because they are damaging their building. Council Officers assessed the request and, based on the damage being done to the Winchcombe Carson property, and the footpath, approved for these juvenile figs to be removed. The juvenile figs on the other side of Vernon Terrace are also doing damage, and officers suggest removal at this location as well. I am told by Council’s professional arborists that these juvenile figs, on both sides of the street, will cause a great deal more damage to the properties if left as they are and not replaced now. I am concerned with any potential removal of trees, and would like to hear the thoughts of locals prior to a final decision being made so please email me today at : central.ward@bcc.qld.gov.au

Engine Room Operator Announced ARTIST’S IMPRESSION

Council has approved the proposal for Uniting Hands Foundation to operate the café in the historic Engine Room. Uniting Hands Foundation is a registered charity and social enterprise whose work supports people at risk of and experiencing homelessness, domestic violence and unemployment. They are a social enterprise with a big heart, proven experience in the restaurant industry, and will be offering traineeships for vulnerable people within the community. This commitment will see a two-fold benefit for locals - a great new opportunity for everyone to experience our beautiful river’s edge lifestyle, and an organisation giving back to the disadvantaged. Two tenders were received for the Engine Room and Council is looking to continue discussions with the other social enterprise, to explore other alternative sites to start their venture.

Paris in sights for Gasworks stylist BY TIMOTHY SWANSTON The world stage beckons for a local salon owner after he grabbed La Biosthetique’s award for Beauty Stylist of the Year 2016. Beauty stylist Todd Arndt (pictured), creative director of Vogue Nationale, a Newstead-based salon in Gasworks Plaza, said winning the award was a “real honour”. “It’s great to win this award. I was up against the best in Australia and New Zealand and again, a Queensland hairdresser takes the prize,” Mr Arndt said. “I have entered the last few years and got runner-up, and then this year I took out the whole award.” Winning the award means that Mr Arndt will compete at the International Beauty Stylist Awards in May next year, held at the prestigious Pavilion Champs Elysées.

Colette said she’s very driven by the satisfaction of success, along with all the roles that being a small business owner brings. “I really enjoy guiding people and staff,” she said. “I’ve taught junior consultants over the years who’ve gone on to senior management – so I take much joy from that.” Helloworld is a great example of female teams in business, with one of Colette’s staff, Tracy Pereira having been involved in the business for 17 years.

Ruth Carter – owner Gravity Zone Ruth Carter is passionate about health and fitness, owning and operating Gravity Zone, a boutique personal training studio focusing on functional training. Ruth has been working in the industry for the last five years, as both a personal trainer and sports massage therapist. Gravity Zone is very different from a conventional personal training studio, specializing in 20 minute express workouts using Whole Body Vibration (WBV) technology and offering individualized programs in exercise and nutrition. “After working in the legal industry for more than 12 years both in Australia and overseas, I made the decision to have a change in career that would enable me to have more of a work/life balance,” Ruth said. “I found working very long hours in a sedentary job was taking its toll on my health and body, both physically and mentally, and I needed to take action to change that.” Ruth has a keen interest in travelling, having travelled much of the world but she’s not stopping there, with a goal to trek Nepal or Patagonia along with a desire to study nutritional medicine. “Nothing in life comes easy and if you want to succeed, you need to have a positive outlook, be mentally strong, feel determined and be fully committed to working hard to achieve your goals,” Ms Carter said.

Calvados + Woolf Lawyers focuses on corporate and commercial law, wills and estates, asset protection, property services, pharmacy law and litigation. With close to a dozen professional and support staff, Marie’s firm is now considered a viable alternative to larger city based firms. “Our clients range from local individuals and businesses to mid-sized enterprises and high net worth clients and entrepreneurs”, Marie says. “We have established ourselves as a cost-effective alternative to larger firms in terms of quality of clients, complexity and quality of advice and, depth of expertise whilst providing that value for money that is no longer an option with larger firms.” Calvados + Woolf Lawyers is now one of the few law firms specialising in purchases and sales of pharmacies and allied medical businesses. “Pharmacy law and advising medical and allied professionals on their business affairs is a niche area and traditionally has only been touched by large firms due to the complexity of advice required – for us it’s a growing area - we are very good at it and we are trusted by the players in this field”. Dr Paula Sivyer - Radiologist difw Dr Paula Sivyer is a radiologist, who owns her own practice specializing in women’s health, particularly breast, gynaecologic and obstetric imaging. “We don’t adopt a one-size-fits-all approach to medical imaging, all patients at difw are imaged according to their individual needs,” Paula said. “This means less back and forth between us and the referring doctor and less waiting/anxiety for patients.” Paula, a self-described ‘perfectionist’ says radiology is at the core of the diagnostic detective story and “every case is a mystery to be solved or excluded.”
After completing medicine at UQ, Paula undertook a fellowship in radiology, opening Diagnostic Imaging for Women 18 years ago. The company rebranded to difw in 2015. Paula, along with her daughter Alexis, are a testament to women in business, with Alexis running difw as a qualified lawyer and economist. “We are a great team and balance each other - we support each other through the good times and of course the less good times that occur in every business!”
“I find a tremendous sense of community connection in my work - I hold hands, talk through concerns and chat about life.” “People often find traditional healthcare confronting and it’s essential to keep their care individual and personal - Every day I work, I try to do the right thing always by my patients.”

Christmas crafts earns volunteer nomination

Safer than a bank

BY MIKE O’CONNOR

Exquisite crafts and delicious foods will be sold at the Karuna Christmas Markets later this month to raise funds for their palliative-care hospice. One Karuna craft lady and New Farm local, Erica Smith (pictured), has been nominated for the Queensland Volunteer of the Year award for her outstanding efforts in raising money for the hospice. “Being nominated is awe inspiring,” Erica said. “When they asked me about it I was very touched but I didn’t realise it was such a big thing! “I run the craft group and our aim is to raise money for Karuna via the Christmas market, where we sell craft that we make.” Erica has been volunteering at Karuna for almost 12 years, something she never expected to do. “A friend of mine was going to Karuna to do some craft and invited me along. I told her that I didn’t have a crafty bone in my body! But here I am, 12 years later.” The Karuna Christmas Markets have traditionally been a hit among

Reserve Vault is one of Brisbane’s best-kept secrets. This ultra-high security vault is located underground in the Brisbane CBD storing much of the city’s gold and silver bullion, high-value collectables, precious bonds and art. The facility completely removes the inherent personal risk of storing your precious goods at home, even in a safe where the threat of death at the hands of robbers will always open it. Located in facilities first established by the Reserve Bank of Australia but now incorporating stateof-the-art, multilayered electronic and physical security systems, Reserve Vault is one of Australia’s largest and safest independent vaults. Such security means the facility is insured by world-class underwriters too, with all-risks cover available at a fraction of what you’d expect. Stepping inside the vault you have a range of safe unit options depending on your needs. From a $99pa Secure Document Envelope, traditional safe deposit boxes of various sizes (from $230pa),

same Campbell but they hated him,’’ says Hinchliffe. A Labor councillor for 25 years for the inner city Central Ward, Hinchliffe is familiar with the vagaries of political life. “The public has become more fickle and less patient. “We expect quick solutions but solutions tend to be slow and hard to achieve,” he says. Hinchliffe’s transition from politics to art has been all but seamless. He quit City Hall in 2008, saying he was tired of what he described as “silly politics”. “When I was contemplating retiring from politics I went to New York. “I was thinking of taking up painting full-time and I knew how hard it was for artists to get space in galleries. “There are millions of artists out there and galleries aren’t increasing in number, they’re declining because it’s getting harder and harder to sell. “So I went from gallery to gallery and it was so discouraging.

Artist and former city councillor David Hinchliffe appreciates the rich irony of his latest portraiture commission. “I’ve just signed a contract to do Campbell Newman’s portrait,” he says as we sit in the Newstead townhouse which doubles as a studio. “As a former Premier, he has to have his portrait done. He asked that I do it and to my surprise his request was approved,” says Hinchliffe. From opposite sides of the political divide, the pair were fierce opponents during Newman’s time as Mayor. “There’s something about a battle with an opponent that you respect. “If you’ve both battled honourably then after the battle is over, you tend to have respect for that person. “I feel sorry for Campbell for what he went through, although he bought a lot of it on himself. “The people couldn’t get enough of him as Lord Mayor but when he got into State Parliament, he was the

I don’t regret a minute of being a councillor but not for a second do I want to go back to it. - DAVID HINCHLIFFE

“It was 2008, the time of the financial crisis and in New York galleries were going bust,” he recalls. “While I was there I’d drop by the Spring Street Studios in Soho where they have life-study groups and for $20 you can sketch the models for a couple of hours. “The woman who runs it looked at my work online and suggested I go around the corner to Michael Ingbar’s Gallery on Broadway. “He took one look at my work and said: ‘How about doing a show in April next year?’ and that was the start of it. “I’ve been having a show there now each year for the last seven years. “That was 2009 and now I’ve got a studio I rent in Harlem,’’ he says. Hinchliffe is nothing if not grateful for what he sees as his good fortune. “I’ve got a magical life, I really do and there’s not a minute of the day when I don’t think how lucky I am, especially after 25 years of hitting my head against a brick wall in politics. “But if I’d gone directly into art, I don’t think I would have been successful. “I don’t think I would have felt satisfied with my life. “I don’t regret a minute of being a councillor but not for a second do I want to go back to it. “People say really nice things about my paintings and I am so humbled when they do. “When I was in politics, no one ever said anything nice about me. It was just relentless criticism,” he says. Represented locally by the Red Hill Gallery, Hinchliffe’s works now feature in London, New York, Tokyo and Hong Kong as well as Melbourne, Sorrento, Mt Eliza, Sydney, Adelaide, Canberra, Maroochydore and Toowoomba.

The streetscapes which have become one of his recurring themes were initially inspired by the streets of Newstead. “It was so industrial years ago before it got taken over residentially. “I liked all those saw-toothed factory buildings and the gasometer. “It had a nice edge to it and I wanted to avoid doing the standard Brisbane streetscape. “There were other artists who were doing it well so I thought I’d stick to the more industrial scenes and to my surprise, people liked it. “That was the beginning. Now it has been so successful I’ve fallen into a nice period of my life, painting subjects that I like and that people want to hang on their walls. “As more people move into the inner city, there is a growing clientele. “I like commission work because it’s special. “There’s extra pressure but if you get it right, it becomes very important to that person or family. “Now I’ve got people telling me that they’ve inherited one of my paintings from their parents, which is nice,” he says. And Campbell Newman’s portrait? “It will be painted by the end of November. I think he’ll look better if he’s not in a suit and he’s got his sleeves rolled up. “Definitely not wearing the hard hat, but sitting down looking casual,” he says of his one-time foe.

the community, with many of the best items sold early in the afternoon. “Usually we have people queued up waiting to come in the doors!” The funds raised for Karuna go towards their on-call palliative care service which sees them driving to the homes of those in need and providing respite to family members. “Karuna people are so loving and caring and make you feel as if you want to be there. It’s a very special aura.” The Karuna Christmas Markets will be held at 2-7pm on Friday November 18, 26 Cartwright St, Windsor. More information at: http://www.karuna.org.au/

Tragic note at ‘Mascotte’ in Brunswick Street historical society GERARD BENJAMIN Around the time in 1890 that railway contractor G.C. Willcocks acquired the premier Brunswick Street residence which he was to improve and rename Wynberg, James Clark (1857–1933) of pearling fame snapped up Mascotte just across the road. This three-bedroom home (on the site of current-day Wirrina flats) had laneway access to Langshaw Street and boasted a “high commanding position” with an advantage of being “within a stone’s throw of the tramway terminus”. Only months after the purchase, Clark invited to his new home those

senior voice TONY TOWNSEND One of the most prized rights available to all Australians is freedom of choice, exercised every day in whatever we choose to do – or not do. Unfortunately, however, as we age, friends and family may move away or we lose the will to leave the security of our house and engage with others. Loneliness or social isolation can be experienced in the city or the country and is one of the greatest social evils afflicting older generations. But here in New Farm we are fortunate that there are numerous groups formed to offer Seniors social contact, entertainment and information, such as the Historical Society, Probus, National Seniors and others. An antidote to social isolation can be to choose to join one or more of these groups where we can mix with other people and make new friends, rather than relying on our own efforts to fill in the days. 16

Glengallan near Warwick who had lost family members in the tragic sinking of the luxurious RMS Quetta in Torres Strait in 1890. The disaster, in which 134 people perished, had shocked the inhabitants of the colony. Since Clark had been part of the syndicate hoping to recover the wreck, the purpose of the invitation was to allow relatives to view and identify passengers’ effects. Some items were remarkably preserved. James Lord, an accountant and organist at the Albert Street Wesleyan Church, who lost his wife and son, identified letters (damp, but quite readable) which comprised the correspondence between his wife and himself for nearly 20 years. Clark’s acquisition of Mascotte came about through the financial straits of its previous owner, Queen Street bank manager John Seafield Deuchar (1859-1899). Everyone has their own tastes and in consequence groups cater for differing interests, but one of the advantages of National Seniors is that we are the largest single organisation representing the views of the over 50s. We actively advocate on behalf of Seniors as well as sponsoring local branches and designing a number of programs tailored to our membership. Our successful Wine and Cheese Extravaganza earlier in October ushered in another busy month, so New Farm Branch plans the following during November: • Thursdays from 10am: Learn Mahjong (Eastern style) at Café 63. • Friday 18th from 9am: “Stitch and Bitch” meeting in New Farm Library. • Friday 18th from 6pm: Dinner at Café 63 on the corner of Brunswick and Sydney Streets when and we particularly welcome people over 50 interested in National Seniors but cannot attend day-time activities. • Wednesday 23rd: CityCat excursion with lunch. It’s possible that Deuchar built the house around 1884 and he and his wife Annie had two sons there. This was a time (1888) and place when horses could still go missing: “STRAYED, from New Farm, Black Pony, Mare, about 10 hands, branded Flxx. Reward on delivery to J.S. Deuchar, Mascotte, New Farm.” The name Deuchar was very well known on the Darling Downs. J.S. Deuchar was the eldest son of John Deuchar (1822–72) who was considered to be the first white man to camp at what is now the town of Warwick. He accompanied fellow Scot and grazing pioneer Patrick Leslie to the Downs in 1840. Leslie was in charge of the sheep and Deuchar the cattle, the latter arriving first. In a classic tale of pastoral boom and bust, Deuchar and his wife Eliza began in 1867 to construct Glengallan, their grand stone-built statement of colonial status, only to be declared insolvent by 1870. J.S. Deuchar’s younger brother Lindsay (the brothers had married Dawson sisters) also had a New Farm connection, although he lived at Toowong. The attraction was the game of bowls.

A bank manager, Mr Deuchar (1866–1915) was a member of the New Farm Bowls Club and proved to be an expert at the game. It is said that Lindsay Deuchar’s death (at only 49) was hastened by the sad news of the death of his son Erle at Gallipoli in May 1915, just two weeks after the landing at Anzac Cove. Mascotte proved to be but a temporary abode for the enterprising James Clark. He engaged Claude Chambers, the architect who had extended Wynberg, to build (in 1898) his stately residence Wybenia in Elystan Road, with grounds running down to the river where his boats were moored. Wybenia is no more, having been later taken over by the Cerebral Palsy League before demolition in 1968. On the other hand, the World War I honour board at New Farm Bowls Club has been well preserved. It lists the sons of Clark, Deuchar and Willcocks, though only the latter’s son survived the war. As for Patrick Leslie, the cottage he built in Brisbane was expanded to become Newstead House. Many thanks to Suzie Deuchar for details of Deuchar family history.

I feel compelled to tell this story about two men who loved Brisbane, had been famous overseas in their own right, then did something great for Queensland and Australia that we shall never forget. In a recent edition, I told the story of Brisbane’s famous author Hugh Lunn, touching on Hugh’s strong links with tennis player Ken Fletcher, and how Ken in 1992 brought to Brisbane the great philanthropist Chuck Feeney, the Irish-American who gave away up to half a billion dollars in Australia, most of it to Queensland medical research. This man, the then-owner of Duty Free Stores (DFS) worldwide, had decided to give away a $5 billion fortune in his lifetime through his trust Atlantic Philanthropies. Chuck and his wife Helga grew to love Brisbane quite quickly through Fletcher’s influence, and still have a residence at Kangaroo Point. But the story of the Fletcher/Feeney alliance started in 1964 when Fletcher left Davis Cup captain Harry Hopman’s “over-disciplinary” influence to make Hong Kong his base. At the time, Hugh Lunn was completing his tenure as a young reporter at The Courier-Mail. While Ken had travelled the international circuit as a member of Australia’s successful Davis Cup Squad enjoying the social life to the full, Hugh was a quieter, shyer young man. Ken Fletcher thought he should broaden his best friend’s outlook on life. So he suggested they meet at the then popular hotel The National at Petrie Bight for a drink and an important talk. “Hughie,” Ken stated at the bar, “we are single, we’re 23, we’re grownup – we’re men! “Since that snooty sheila gave you up, you haven’t had a girlfriend. “Let’s go overseas, see the world. Let’s go to Hong Kong – it’s full of girlfriends.”

from Left :Hugh Lunn, Chuck Feeney, Ken Fletcher, Farid Khan, Helga Feeney So off they went. As a touring tennis player, Ken knew many VIP locals and he had a permanent room in Hong Kong’s Grand Hotel through a friend, Victor Sun, a descendant of Sun Yat Sun who founded the Chinese Republic back in 1911. “Victor Sun,” Ken assured Hugh, “is a big lah-de-dah in this neck of the woods!” Victor’s parents wanted their son to win the Hong Kong tennis title. The favourite was Jerry Sung, another wealthy local’s son, who had been coached by Pancho Gonzalez in the US. In a dramatic final, the Fletchercoached Victor Sun defeated Jerry Sung. Jerry’s dad immediately proposed to Ken that if he got Jerry to play doubles with him at Wimbledon, then Fletch would be given a new Rolls Royce. So Ken trained Jerry and practiced doubles against China’s top players. “We’ve got a Rolls Royce riding on this, Hughie,” he’d say. But try as Ken could, the Wimbledon officials would not accept the pair’s nomination despite Ken’s own great record at Wimbledon. John Newcombe claimed Ken as a partner in the Wimbledon doubles instead. They won the title that year so instead of a Rolls, Ken ended up with a £10 voucher for Lilywhite’s Store! As a boy, Ken’s mother paid for his first tennis lesson, and when she couldn’t afford to continue paying the fees, Ken’s grandmother – watching him belt the tennis ball with his forearm style against a back yard wall for long periods – announced she would pay for future lessons. The great champion Rod Laver was two years older than Ken. Laver won the under-14 title the same day as Fletcher won the under-12s. And so it continued, up through the age groups. “The final was always held on Mother’s Day,” said Ken. “I had to win for Mum. That first title was the first time I had ever played on grass.” In 1952, Queensland tennis records show these results: under-12 boys’ singles, Ken Fletcher; under-14

boys’ singles, Rod Laver; under-16 boys’ singles, Roy Emerson. A decade later, that read like a Who’s Who of world tennis. A BBC Wimbledon commentator said of Fletcher: “In the mid-1960s Ken Fletcher made the Wimbledon Centre Court his own” – because Ken was then so often on the Centre Court. He played four men’s Wimbledon doubles finals in a row with three different partners and teamed up with Margaret Smith (Court) to win four Wimbledon Mixed titles out of five finals. He also made the final one year with Maria Bueno. In singles Fletcher was seeded Number 3 but lost to the eventual winner three years in a row in close matches. Hugh Lunn recalled: “Disappointed, he explained the losses: ‘Hughie, to win Wimbledon you need God on your side’.” Fletcher is one of only a dozen people who have won a Grand Slam – in 1963 he and Margaret, at their only attempt, won the Australian, French, Wimbledon and US Mixed Doubles titles. No one else had done it before – and no one has done it since. Ken was based in Hong Kong until 1968 when he moved to England and Europe. He retired early, at 28, and never again took to coaching as a business in his retirement, constantly searching for an idea that paid off, like opal dealing, or buying a tennis ranch development site in Spain, gambling at the casinos, but nothing in his business life ever proved successful. Ken kept returning to Brisbane every year. How did Ken meet Chuck Feeney? “During Ken’s years in Hong Kong, he coached tennis, and included among his clients was a Mrs Feeney, and one day at a cocktail party Ken met her husband Chuck, who operated DFS, and they struck up a friendship until Chuck left Hong Kong in the late 1960s. “Ken was not to run into Chuck again until a chance meeting in London two decades later. By now Chuck was one of the richest men in the world.”

Chuck had never been to Brisbane so he employed Ken to represent him in Queensland. Chuck Feeney found a great affinity with Queensland and Queenslanders, and Ken introduced Chuck and his wife Helga to me (this writer) when Ken and Chuck bought apartments in Kangaroo Point. I was living nearby at my then Shafston House. Ken told me: “Chuck has many hotels and resorts throughout the world, like Bali and Guam, Prague, more than a dozen five-star hotels on the East Coast of America – everywhere it seems! “He’s also on the Ireland Peace Committee – he’s very influential, much loved in Ireland for his generously planned developments and philanthropies. “Chuck is a very modest man, He dresses plainly, never wears a tie, travels around the world in economy class, refuses to have his photo taken – there’s only one black-and-white photo of him in existence.” I invited them, along with Hugh Lunn, to my then Brisbane Broncos Box several times in the early 1990s, and they enjoyed following the Broncos. Ken and Hugh tried hard to help Chuck achieve his primary goal in life – to find worthy recipients, including locally, of his philanthropic grants. It was apparently difficult at first to give away such grants to anyone in Brisbane, Hugh recalled. Then Chuck said: “We’ll give $20 million to a good cause here, then the word will quickly spread.” And it worked. Hugh Lunn marvels at the great good it has done for Australian medical research and its results. In 2006, Ken Fletcher died, and at the Holy Spirit Church, New Farm, Fr Leo Coote, who had stayed by Ken’s bedside until the end, performed the funeral service, attended by a huge crowd of mourners. Hugh recalls: “After his death, Fletch was honoured at the Queensland Tennis Centre at Tennyson with the Ken Fletcher Park there, and a bust of him placed. “He was Brisbane’s best-ever home-grown tennis player. “I wrote the book The Great Fletch and questioned why – with his incredible record – he wasn’t in the Tennis Hall of Fame in Melbourne.” On the evening of Australia Day 2012 Fletch was finally inducted into the Hall of Fame. ...continued page 21. Q

ANNABELLE CHAPPLE In the early 2000s it was routine for Deborah Peralta to rush home from her day job, get her two young daughters to bed then promptly transform into Willy Wonka. She was tinkering with a brownie recipe that would one day be adored by chocolate lovers across Brisbane and around the globe. This month Dello Mano, which she cofounded with husband Bien, turns 10. New Farm Village News caught up with the former food scientist to talk about why the future of the family business looks bright.

Q

HOW DOES SOMEONE BECOME A FOOD SCIENTIST?

I did a four-year degree in Applied Science with food and in my final year

Q

WHAT INSPIRED DELLO MANO?

When we were first married it was our dream to open a business together. On a trip to Italy with the kids we were inspired by the Italians’ art of buying food. We’d buy just some slices of prosciutto for lunch and they would wrap it up, put a bow on it and hand it across as if it were a gift. That was the concept really behind Dello Mano, more than a product. The brownies came about because I was travelling all over and noticing brownies were just a forgotten thing. With my chocolate experience I knew it was something I could do.

HANDMADE ARTISAN BREADS

Q

YOU THEN WORKED FOR ARNOTT’S, KELLOGG’S AND SANITARIUM IN SYDNEY: WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO BRISBANE?

Bien is from Brisbane. I was having a second baby so we thought we’d just put everything on hold and come up here for a break.

ALL MADE FRESH ON SITE

Double Choc Pecan Slice

When I broke my fingers Coco, 17, stepped in to help me. Some people would say, “wow, those kids have been through a lot” but we feel like a team

Q

HOW MANY BATCHES DID YOU MAKE TO GET THAT PERFECT BROWNIE?

Hundreds. I had a job and two small kids so I just did it at night time. It took a year and a half. I was always trying to improve the product: get more chocolate in, make it denser. I could’ve just kept on going.

Q

WHEN DID YOU LAUNCH?

Ten years ago exactly, in November 2006. The first year we just supplied boxes to a few corporates, then Jan Power sent us an invitation to join the Farmers Markets. Days before our first stall I came up with the idea of wrapping the brownies to sell separately. The whole family went along that first day: our daughters Phoebe, Coco and Bien’s father. We hired this

huge van with refrigeration. It was an incredible experience.

Q

ARE YOUR DAUGHTERS STILL INVOLVED IN THE BUSINESS?

Yes, because before we started it I sat them down to talk – they were only 5 and 7 then – but we’d always had family meetings. I told them about the idea, how it was going to be a struggle then asked them to vote: should I keep my job, which took me to Sydney a lot, or should we start the business? They voted for the business, and it made them want to be part of it. They’d wake with us at two o’clock in the morning for the markets and help us set up the stall. Now Phoebe, 19, runs our CBD shop on Saturdays and Sundays. See over page...

WE HAVE TO ASK ABOUT THAT HOLLYWOOD A-LISTER WHO LOVES YOUR BROWNIES.

ANNABELLE’S TIPS:

A lot of famous people bought our brownies before Ashton Kutcher but we just never talked about it to respect their privacy. About two weeks after the 2011 floods we were trying to rev up business again (at the Breakfast Creek store) when we got a phone call. I could hear Bien arranging to have brownies sent to Paris for Ashton’s 31st birthday. It was a Monday, we needed to get three boxes there by Wednesday. I said to him: “Say yes, we’ll figure out the shipping later.” Luckily a customer from the early days ran a shipping company and helped us get them there safely. butter, chopped

To make the base combine butter, sugar and pecans in a bowl then add flour and baking powder. Mix until well combined. Spread the base mixture into the cake pan using your hands. It won’t look like enough dough but it will spread with patience. Bake for 18 minutes, until golden and firm to touch.

For the filling, combine condensed milk, sugar and butter in a large microwave-safe jug or bowl. Cook uncovered, stirring every two minutes, for six-to-eight minutes on high or until mixture comes to the boil, is thick and golden. Stand for one minute. Add chocolate, stirring constantly until melted then fold in pecans. Pour mixture over warm base and set aside to cool completely. To make the frosting, melt butter over a low heat then slowly add chocolate. Stir mixture gently, until smooth then pour over fudge slice. You can then decorate with a few additional chopped nuts, otherwise just refrigerate for 15 minutes to set and cut into squares.

A few tips: if you don’t have a food processor to chop the nuts place them in a zip-lock bag, wrap a tea towel around it and give it a good bashing with a rolling pin. Deborah uses dark Belgian chocolate, naturally, but it comes down to personal preference and I found plain dark chocolate worked fine. A final note, the Peraltas adapted this from a Stahmann Farms’ recipe.

I was nervous testing this recipe because it’s similar to caramel slice and those recipes often disappoint me. The bases are rarely crisp enough, the toppings too stiff. But Deborah, you have restored my confidence, this recipe is perfection. The addition of crushed pecans creates a crumbly, rich base, an ideal union with creamy fudge and bitter-sweet chocolate.

TRAVEL

Airport innovations for travellers village travel ANNA STEWART We spend a lot more time in airports now than we did 20 years ago. And not just because we travel so much more. Security measures and airline check-in deadlines, especially prior to international flights, mean we need to be at the airport well in advance of flight departure time. The days of cutting it fine and racing through the terminal to the plane at the very last minute are long gone. The new-look Brisbane Airport App is designed to help travellers with the process. It provides invaluable airport information to reduce any pre-travel anxiety and enhance time spent at the terminal and is now also available in Simplified Chinese, Japanese and Korean.

The App provides sign-in for Facebook and Google users to personalise their airport experience and receive exclusive offers. Information includes retail and dining options and scope to make accommodation, rental car and parking bookings. The ‘My Trip’ function provides a handy reminder on where you parked your car, especially useful for those returning with ‘holiday brain’. Other tips include getting to and from the airport plus tourist attraction highlights of Brisbane and beyond. Essential information on flight arrivals and departures is available and you can opt to receive text notifications on any change to your outbound flight. Inbound flight details can be shared with family and friends so they can be notified by text should your flight arrival time change significantly. The world-first Digital Departure Card (via the “Departure Card” option on the Brisbane Airport App) enables outbound international travellers to enter and save their personal Departure Card information on their mobile device. No more last minute form-filling before heading to the Immigration queue. Information stored in the App is converted into a QR code to be scanned and printed at kiosks

located in the International Terminal. All the traveller need do is sign the card, to be collected by Customs as part of the departure process. This clever Brisbane Airport App can be downloaded for free from iTunes or from the Google Play Store. The recent opening of Australia’s first independent Plaza Premium Lounge & Wellness Spa at Brisbane International is another plus. Regardless of airline or class of travel, outward bound international travellers can now purchase lounge access to enjoy comfortable seating, complimentary food and beverage, WiFi, Internet, telephone access and re-charging workstations, international newspapers and magazines. Lounge access starts from $66 per person for a five (5) hour package and gift card visits to any of the

lounge network can be purchased online, making the perfect going-away present for loved ones and friends. Multi-visit transferable-use cards are available, as well as frequent traveller package deals, literally opening up a whole new world for travellers. At additional cost, lounge guests can also avail themselves of the associated Wellness Spa, with treatments designed to relax and prepare travellers for their international flight. The new facility, one of 27 lounges throughout the world, is located on Level Four between Gates 81 and 82 and is open all day from 5.30am through to 11.30pm. Q

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP THREE DESTINATIONS?

• Coles Bay in Tasmania, for the freshest seafood, great wines and spectacular natural beauty. • Hong Kong, for its fast and furious pace, world-class restaurants, and great local walks (the Trappist Monastery located between Discovery Bay and Mui Wo on Lantau Island is wonderful but not a journey for the faint-hearted). • Tintagel in Cornwall, a magical place ringing with the history of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

Q

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE TRAVEL TALE?

While wandering around the Loire Valley in France, we ended up staying in a small village called Montresor. In halting French, I managed to barter with the mayor’s wife to purchase a beautiful pedestal occasional table, which is still a favourite piece now. Getting it home was an even bigger adventure.

Q

AN “OFF-THE-BEATEN TRACK” STORY?

Took a trip west through outback Queensland to Longreach, overnighting in Blackall, the home of Jackie Howe, the Black Stump and the Heritage-listed Wool Scour. We threw a line into the Barcoo River and caught a couple of yellowbelly, a delicious fresh water local fish. Simple travel pleasures!

Q

A REALLY MEMORABLE DINING EXPERIENCE?

At Huvafen Fushi Resort in the Maldives, there’s a restaurant called Vinum which is housed in a cavern 8 metres beneath the island. Incredible art and literally walls of fabulous wine. A memorable place to celebrate a special birthday.

Q

YOUR #1 MOST PRACTICAL TRAVEL TIP TO SHARE?

Take small quantity toiletries and always leave room in your bag for that unexpected treasure. My three “must-bring” things when taking a trip are: • A good hat • A failsafe credit/debit card • A sense of humour

Q

TRAVEL BOOK AND WEBSITE SUGGESTIONS?

Any of Bill Bryson’s books offer a great tongue-in-cheek perspective. Also blogs by Keep Calm and Travel and Expert Vagabond. For websites, I recommend Beautiful Accommodation and also Luxury Escapes.

ENTERTAINMENT

Christmas bash at Nash BY JAMES JESSUP

Spring is strung The passionate and talented violinist Attilla Sautov (pictured) will offer a solo recital on Saturday December 3 at 3pm in the City Tabernacle Baptist Church, Spring Hill. Audiences seem to love him. “I’ve never heard the violin played like that. Attilla is a whole orchestra,” said one audience member after one of these concerts. “This was the best concert I have been to in 50 years,” said another. One woman commented: “The violin can tear your heart out and I was just crying the whole time. Just beautiful.” This unaccompanied solo program will include Bach’s Chaconne (from

Partita No. 2 in D minor), a structurally and emotionally powerful piece. He will also perform three of Paganini’s Caprices, and Attilla’s own arrangement of Paganiniana (variations on themes of Paganini by Nathan Milstein). Sautov’s spokesperson said the audience would witness “a mesmerising display, a whirlwind of seemingly impossible but sublime sounds that appear effortless to retrieve from just four strings”. Tickets are available at the door or www.attillasautov.com Contact 0417 619 915 for further details.

An exciting musical rendition of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol is set to hit the Nash Theatre stage at New Farm later this month with promises of singing, dancing and a good deal of Christmas humour. All of the classic characters are set to make an appearance, and Nash Theatre is inviting Brisbane audiences to kick start their holiday season by reliving this rejuvenated classic. The musical will be put on at The Brunswick Room (Merthyr Road Uniting Church) 52 Merthyr Road, New Farm, and runs from November 19 until December 10 on selected dates. Visit www.nashtheatre.com for more details.

AUCTION

Unbeknown to anyone at the time the market ripped on the hand break for about 6 weeks during the federal election. What happened was buyers just stopped making major decisions and sellers were faced lacklustre offers from the market. We didn’t know at the time whether those offers were election jitters or a sign of things to come. History has now shown us it was election jitters and those buyers are currently out of the winter cold and ready to buy. Sellers too are now confident that the market will dish up fair prices and this has seen a wave of fresh properties listed for sale. Core logic has reported a 10% increase of ‘new listings’ over the 4 weeks until mid October. This spike is exclusive to Queensland on the east coast with NSW & Victoria showing negative growth in listing numbers compared to this time last year. There is also a large amount of Prestige properties hitting the market. If you watch the Saturday Courier Mail you will start to see some of the cities finest properties hit the market in the coming weeks. I personally believe Brisbane’s top end market has a lot of growth in it and the next 12 months should be decorated with record sales in price ranges not seen since pre GFC. On the flip side the Brisbane rental market is in a dog fight for available tenants. Vacancy is the enemy of yield . There are a number of examples of landlords offering very lateral incentives for tenants to get them to call their place home. It’s important any property investor considers the cost of vacancy, the wrong tenant or an interest rate that is too high will cost them more than a small drop in rent. With more units hitting the market in the coming years, it’s going to be a tenants market and the landlords that accept that will have a much smother ride than the ones that try and fight the market haesley is the local principal of living here cush partners and a columnist for the sunday mail. portions of this article may be an extract from his column.

THE OTHER SIDE WITH IVO KORNEL

Spring has sprung this year with Belle Property New Farm setting a personal best of $16,270,000 in sales for the month of September, we hate to brag or boost but why not share some good news of a relatively new business kicking some goals. A big thank you to all of our clients, old or new, we couldn’t have done it without you in September or over the last 12 months. The business did turn one on the first of September and in reflection three thoughts have come to mind which I might share with you via this medium. Don’t doubt the power you wield. Yes, its scary opening up the doors on the first day knowing it’s all on the line, but one must remind themselves that they got to this point but not being lazy, or incompetent, but by working hard and obviously doing something right. So, focus and trust in yourself that all will be well if you continue doing what you have been doing all along. You become what you think you are! You cannot do it all by yourself! Every business needs staff who can plug the gaps, challenge your thinking and add value to the business. From conception, Belle Property has grown from 6 to now 14 staff members. The proverb, hire slowly, fire quickly still

holds sway and when I hire, I ask myself, would I sell my family home with this person? If the answer is yes, then a job is offered, if not, well good luck to them. It’s not about quantity but quality. Believe in your staff and empower them to become great. I treat all my guys as CEO’s and not just another bare bum in the shower. The more you cultivate the more you reap on all fronts of your business. Retaining staff is key, don’t take them for granted or they’ll head off down the road somewhere.

Aaron sells beautiful places.

Good luck!
