Bowls for a cause Fun-focused barefoot bowling tournament, Crack-a-Jack Attack, is returning to New Farm Bowls Club for four weeks starting in October to raise money for the New Farm Neighbourhood Centre. Crack-a-Jack Attack organiser Neil Peach said the club had been motivated to continue because the tournament “is not only for a good cause, but because every time people really do enjoy it.” “Half the people come along thinking they might have fun and the other half aren’t sure but people tend to enjoy it much more than they anticipate.” New Farm resident Charmaine Henrickson said she had attended

Although she plays for the McGrath Estate Agents team, she said that the last game she attended she was playing for two teams because of a shortage one night and it meant “both teams were having a laugh”. Both Neil and Charmaine agreed that anybody who had spare time should head along and join a team, as no experience was necessary. “The Neighbourhood Centre to me is a very worthwhile cause,” Charmaine added. “When I get a minute, I like to make them sandwiches and drop it in.” The tournament is open for all to register and is held on Tuesdays October 4, 11, 18 and 25. BETH J LEACH “Remember the days of the old school yard?” sang Cat Stevens. Days filled with lessons and play and an open journey ahead, glistening with the possibilities of a hopeful future. Those memories are distant now but still I feel them. I examine the school photos and some faces are no longer with us. I search harder into the images, past their smiles and into their eyes and I wonder for some, when the golden glow started to slip away. A murder, two suicides, the chronically depressed, alcoholic and disconnected. Life is the ultimate lottery. By understanding this simple principle, compassion, love and tolerance will grow.

And understanding there are unforeseen factors that make day-to-day life difficult for some. What we are bestowed at birth by nature, physically and psychologically, is largely a random occurrence, shuffled like a deck of cards. Winston Churchill called depression the “black dog”. It transcends everything: culture, wealth, status, gender, as does any mental illness. The more we talk about the existence of mental health, the more possibilities there are of supporting each other through it. On Sunday October 16 the New Farm “Bouncing Back” Handball Festival will swing into action at the Lamington Street side of the Powerhouse. It coincides with National Mental Health Awareness Week. It’s a day for young and old, it’s alcohol free and cost free. The focus is on celebrating and promoting good mental health and looking out for each other. A group of local volunteers and the New Farm Neighbourhood Centre have put the annual event together. If you dare, wear a costume to increase the carnival atmosphere. I’ll be there on centre court as Head Referee and we’ll have music, a BBQ sausage sizzle, games and information.

Leanne and Matilda Cutuli with some of the jams, candles and craft items they have been busy making for the “Homemade Stall”.

Holy Spirit Fair springs to new heights The Holy Spirit Spring Fair is back, with even more exciting entertainment, stalls and activities. In the lead-up to the event, Leanne Cutuli has been hard at work teaching parents and children of New Farm how to hand-make soaps, candles, bath bombs and much more.

“I’m very excited to see it all go on sale and very much looking forward to the Fair.”

This week I officially became a Newstead resident, one of the many “newbies” moving from the suburbs to the inner city. The apartment my wife and I bought off the plan two years ago is finally complete, we have the keys and look forward to moving in.

Locals have been workshopping and will contribute amazing jams, chutneys, sauces and fresh baked goods, all to be sold on the day.

Why Newstead? We chose to live there because the Newstead-TeneriffeNew Farm enclave seemed to us to be possessed of an energy and dynamism not felt elsewhere.

All the favourite stalls will be back, including the adventure playground, adrenaline rides, face painting, sweets and treats, show bags and a sideshow alley.

It projected a sense of village and a character which was unique and distinct from Paddington, West End, Milton or the ‘Gabba.

For the foodies and adults out there, the Spring Fair boasts an International Street Food Precinct, a wellness zone, a Devonshire tea café, a champagne bar and Pimms and lemonade stalls.

Ms Cutuli, keen maker and do-er, said she has been preparing for the Fair since Easter, collecting ideas and looking at trends.

Adults and children alike will be well looked after with a wildlife stall, magic shows, an afternoon disco and live music entertainment, provided by local bands, music ensembles and dance groups.

“I recruited keen craftsters from the school, we’ve have had some craft mornings and afternoons making things and I must say the product is wonderful,” Ms Cutuli said.

The Spring Fair will be held on Sunday September 11 from 10am to 4pm at the Holy Spirit school on 36 Villiers St, New Farm.

Its narrow-sided streets with their tightly packed cottages might have mirrored those of other inner-city

suburbs but the feel was undeniably and definably different. The district’s fabric, when we first began to walk its streets, seemed quiltlike with its patches of old and new. The apartment towers that are bringing the new wave of migration to the district mark the emergence of the latest phase of the area’s development. Not everybody likes them and I can understand this point of view. There comes a tipping point for high-density residential development beyond which the quality of life begins to suffer. The art, obviously, lies in knowing when this has been reached. We can but hope that the state government and Brisbane City Council don’t develop an addiction to the easy money that flows from stamp duty and development fees. We were also drawn to the district by its bond with the river, the vibrancy of its entertainment and dining scene and the easy going, sub-tropical mood that it projects. I lived in New Farm in the 1970s, flatting with some mates and living on beer and burgers. It’s a lighter, brighter place now than ever it was. We should all do our best to keep it that way.

COUNCIL CONNECTIONS village view Beth J Leach

Council revitalises iconic Teneriffe Engine Room Brisbane City Council last week commenced work to rejuvenate the heritage-listed Engine Room building so that it can be opened to the public for the very first time. Council is refurbishing this heritage building so it can be leased for a vibrant new café operated by a not-for-profit. The restoration of the building will improve access to the Brisbane River and add to the vibrant recreation opportunities along the Teneriffe riverfront, in line with Council’s River’s Edge Strategy. Locals will be aware the Engine Room is located along the busy Teneriffe riverwalk, which is popular with families, cyclists and runners and there has been strong community interest in seeing the building opened to the public. As part of the restoration, Council will install kitchen facilities, dining areas, an outdoor deck and public toilets, to complement the surrounding parkland and its opportunities for riverside recreation. Our commitment to provide a lease to a social enterprise, to operate the Engine Room as a café, fulfils our promise to double Council’s investment in social enterprises. Council is currently assessing tenders to operate the site and looks forward to making an announcement on this in the near future. The café will be able to operate from 7am to 10pm, every day of the week and Council will be taking a number of measures to mitigate noise and protect the privacy of nearby residences. The heritage-listed Engine Room was built between 1917 and 1927, and originally housed mechanical equipment for former wool store industry, before later being used by the Navy as part of World War Two operations. Construction works will be undertaken by successful tenderer by A Dart & Co. and include: • restoring the distinctive internal and external brickwork • installing a ceiling, suspended flooring, air-conditioning, new windows and doors • constructing a timber deck overlooking the river • improving access to the building and installing security measures • providing new public toilet facilities • connecting new services including gas, sewer and water • landscaping works.

Welcome the walk, but fix the fence Like the majority of Teneriffe residents, I welcome the news that Council is going to spend $5 million on maintaining the Riverwalk and fixing up the Engine Room at Catalina Park, both legacies from previous administrations. I just hope that the same statesmanlike spirit can be applied to resolving the issue of the fence at Mactaggarts Place. Ben Pritchard President, Teneriffe Progress Association

Thin end of the wedge? Understandably, the people of Teneriffe are dismayed by the two fences erected by Mactaggarts Body Corporate, violating the agreement with the Council to keep an access from the road to the river. But this may only be the first in a string of disappointments for local residents. It could be that these two fences are designed to mark the territory of Mactaggarts. Within a year, there may be an engineer’s report flagging safety issues with the carpark, and expensive repairs. A solution could be proposed that pays each unit holder $10,000 for the inconvenience of loss of a carpark during two years of construction of an eight-storey apartment building with an underground carpark. Problem solved! Winners all around, except local residents. Peter Scally Teneriffe

New centre for Teneriffe The Teneriffe Community Centre has delighted locals with its free art classes and public facilities since it opened on May 17. The communal space is an initiative of Riverside Marine, with the company providing all the materials and resources to operate the centre. “This is a beautiful place that the community is very happy with,” said Maria Lopez, who runs a Columbian barber in the centre from Tuesday to Saturday. “We offer free coffee, free tea and people can just come here and have a seat, relax, read a book.”

“People don’t need to bring anything, we provide brushes, canvases, the whole lot,”said Stephen.

All members of the community are encouraged to visit the centre, with Stephen describing his classes as ranging from “8-years-old to 85-yearsold”.

Stephen believes that public art spaces like the Teneriffe centre are vital to developing the arts in Brisbane. “People who come along, who have really never painted in their life, they begin to appreciate that art is not

Ladies lunch Engine Room for local Outcome a school Win The inaugural ‘New Farm Hats & Heels’ lunch and fashion parade next month at Bucci Restaurant is aiming to raise money for much needed classroom air-conditioning in New Farm State School. The lunch, on Saturday October 8, promises an auction and a fashion parade that is “perfectly timed for spring racing,” said committee member, Sherrie Storror, “we’re hoping that it will turn into something pretty spectacular like a New Farm fashion festival.” Sherrie said that the goal is to raise enough funds to install air-conditioning at the local school before summer. BY TIMOTHY SWANSTON After years of frustrated back and forth Brisbane City Council have announced an upgrade of the historic Engine Room and will pour $1.2 million into the site. Mayor Graham Quirk said Council had been searching for a way to utilise the disused heritage-listed building. “Council is refurbishing this heritage building, which has been disused for many years, so it can be leased for a vibrant new café, which pays homage to the building’s historic past,” Cr Quirk said. “Our commitment to provide a lease to a social enterprise, to operate the Engine Room as a café, fulfils our promise to double Council’s investment in social enterprise. “Council is currently assessing tenders to operate the site and looks

forward to making an announcement on this in the near future.” But Teneriffe resident Ken Hoy has been fighting the development since 2014, when Council initially announced the Engine Room would become a sizeable restaurant. “We were horrified by this, as longtime residents of the area we were told it would always be for community purposes, not commercial concerns,” Mr Hoy said.

Despite Council’s comments and their media release outlining the social enterprise plan for the space, Mr Hoy says he still has some concerns.

“At face value, a social enterprise is a better outcome than a restaurant – however, it remains to be seen what will transpire,” Mr Hoy said. Cherylee Treloar, CEO of Footprints Inc, a local not for profit provider of community service, says they are hoping to activate the site for social enterprise use and engage with the local community. “We put in an expression of interest and then a tender when it went to tender – we haven’t made it a secret that we’re interested and that we could activate it under a social enterprise model,” Ms Treloar said. “It would be a shame if it went to another group – we’re heavily involved in the inner-north and have heavily invested in the community.”

Positive approach for children BY JOCELYN GARCIA New Farm resident and Brisbanebased psychiatrist known as “Dr Harmony” who has 15 years of experience in the field of mental health has launched a series of books which have been a hit for children, teachers and parents. Her Building Resilience books, now available in Mary Ryan’s in New Farm, help children label their emotions and allow them to have choices about what to do with them. “The books give common scenarios of what each uncomfortable feeling is like so children can identify it in their own daily lives,” she said. “Once children can label their feelings, it gives them choices about what they can to about it so they no longer feel helpless and are less likely to feel out of control and act out, such as temper tantrums, aggression, give up instead of persevering.”

The last pages of the books include fun activities for children to emphasise the messages of each book and an adult’s page to provide tips for parents to help children work through each topic. “My intention was to make learning these life skills fun and so children are happy to read the books repeatedly.” Dr Harmony has found there are numerous negative outcomes from not being taught constructive skills to cope with the challenges of life from a young age. “Given my concern about the growing social problems in our community such as violence, bullying, family breakdown and many more, I wrote and illustrated these books,” she said. It is hard to treat emotional and social problems when they have already developed in adults and this was what Dr Harmony wanted to prevent with resilience. “Resilience is the ability to cope with any adversity in life and my books promote skills which are essential to building resilience in children, families and adults.” “As a community, I believe that we all need to work together to teach

Moral and other Rights PAUL FAIRWEATHER ARCHITECT Recently there have been changes made to a couple of the wool store apartment buildings in Teneriffe. Some of these changes, in particular the erection of the fence adjacent to Mactaggart’s Woolstore Apartments blocking the pedestrian access adjacent from Vernon Terrace to the river, raise some very curious issues for me around moral and other rights. The Copyright Act 2000 has a provision to protect the moral rights of an author of an artistic work, whether that be a piece of art, music or a building. It seeks to protect against infringement of that work by way of reputation and attribution, as well as to allow the original author to comment or influence changes to that work. The erection of this fence raises not only the issue of the moral rights of the original design authors but also the moral rights of an individual or group to make changes to their property for their own benefit, particularly when these changes impose a restriction or other negative impact on the greater public. As an architect, it is a minefield to navigate the maze of legislative controls when designing any building. When working on a place of heritage significance, the complexity increases exponentially, balancing the expectation of developers, future owners and users, councils and other planning authorities as well as the public, while producing work that stands the test of time, yet respects the fabric of the existing buildings. When the Teneriffe wool stores were being converted in the 90s, there initially was strong resistance to the idea of cutting these large open planned spaces up into apartments. While for a time many of these buildings were used for discount furniture, rugs and fabric markets, ultimately their value as development sites outweighed the costs of the ongoing maintenance and other holding costs.

In order to preserve them from ongoing decay, the decision was made to convert them to apartments and therefore to transfer the ownership from an individual or company, to many people. The future care and maintenance of these buildings has been passed to the collective care of apartment owners, represented by their Body Corporates. These custodians now have the responsibility of the financial upkeep of these buildings but the question remains about whether that responsibility gives them the right to make changes to these buildings and their immediate surroundings, without the same level of consultation and due process that was required when they were originally converted.

original processes of the loading and unloading of the wool on to the trains. This was achieved by incorporating panels into the screen fences that were reminiscent of the steel side panels of the train trucks. This design element was one of many that formed part of the approval from the legislative bodies as being an appropriate response to the adaptation of this building for its new use as apartment buildings. I notice with some regret that recently these screen elements have been removed and replaced by more modern decorative panels. The changes to the Dakota Apartments screen panels would not be noticed by many, while the issues

Whilst this fence at Mactaggarts encloses what is private property, it is pretty clear from the original approval that the intent was to maintain public access from the road to the river walk. I have no doubt that if that project was approved today, the BCC would have mandated by way of easement a permanent access along this path. - PAUL FAIRWEATHER

At the time of conversion, the Heritage Council and the Brisbane City Council put very strict controls on many of the interventions and alterations to these buildings.

at Mactaggart’s is of great interest to many people. Both however, raise a series of questions. What are the rights of building owners, and what are their obligations? Do they have a right to make changes without reference to external bodies and the original design team, or do they have an obligation, moral or otherwise, to take into consideration a broader context? It is my view that the custodians of most buildings have some obligation, and it is greater for those buildings of heritage significance, to balance the expectations of owners against the expectations of the public and the impact changes to those buildings make on the public realm. The qualities and characteristics that make the wool store buildings special have survived for many years despite them passing through numerous hands and different uses but the shared responsibility of maintaining these qualities will continue for as long as the buildings stand.

To the design teams, many of these controls were seen as impositions to creative and design freedom, and at times impacted on the amenity of the future owners and occupants. These controls were often about benefit for the public good, that being either visual appearance, or another public amenity. When I was architectural project director for the conversion of the Goldsborough Mort Wool stores into the Dakota Apartments, the authorities imposed strict control on changes to the building facades, though some latitude was granted at the ground level. Wherever possible, the original train tracks were maintained, as were the original openings in walls. In accordance with the Burra Charter, new materials were required to be distinctively different from those of the existing building fabric. The design team made a very subtle acknowledgment of the September 2016 I villageNews

This writer knew the home-spun philosopher and raconteur Bruce Robinson for 40 of those 50 years and enjoyed his company greatly. Everyone enjoys a conversation peppered with laughs, especially when their day has been a little stressful. Bruce had a great attitude to life and one of his sayings was: “Everything goes wrong if you don’t see the funny side of life!” And he laughed. So I laughed. It was contagious. Clients don’t expect a jeweller to laugh too much.

But a sprinkle of laughter can ease the pressure. If you ever got Bruce Robinson alone, and got him laughing—I mean, really laughing, it made your day.

Bruce was straight out of an Indiana Jones movie - - where he told of a Great Air Race over a waterway inhabited by 35 foot sharks —and don’t forget the diamond mines!

Being a Virgo, he claimed he was a perfectionist. He thought precision and that’s why he needed a good eye. “To repair watches, I have to be right on my game,” he said. “A notable event was when once on Queen Elizabeth’s visit to our city, a large black limousine rolled up outside, two distinguished gentlemen alighted, dressed right royally, with crown emblems emblazoned on the

It had been raised before by others but the Senator took a real shine to Hugh, as they both had been educated at St Joseph’s, Gregory Terrace, they both loved Rugby League, and both were true-blue Queenslanders. Hugh told him why he was going to the capital, saying he had just been notified he had won the National Press Award for an article in The Australian about a successful rugby union interstate match. What we need is a State of Origin – It’s a stacked deck.” He said: “We have a whole new breed of champions coming through – Lewis, Meninga, Miles ... if they go to Sydney, the Sydney clubs will probably never release their stars.” Here he habitually took off his glasses to wipe them theatrically, and said: “What if we lose? Something too terrible to contemplate. The interstate series will be dead in the water.” Ron then said: “You would only want men who would sit in the trenches with you in the midst of war. Patriotism is a great thing. “(Like Artie), the older they get the more they regret they didn’t play for Queensland.” Here Hugh recalled that the Senator had been a Rat of Tobruk in World War II, so he knew what it was like at war in the trenches. Then the phone call came in Brisbane that Hugh had been waiting for, from McAuliffe: “The time has come for all loyal Queenslanders to come to the party.” Origin was to begin. Senator McAuliffe passed away in 1988 after eight of the most successful years in League history, and of course the concept has mushroomed in interest throughout the world in the 36 years since Arthur Beetson’s team won that first night at Lang Park.

Three years ago Hugh conceived the idea of a musical around the State of Origin series, and it has been blossoming of late with much writing, music, an acting cast, and the possible backing of the QRL and the NRL. As when Hugh was writing Over the Top with Jim, many critics then said it would never work, as “no one was interested in reading about others’ childhoods”. The book sold well in 1989 but following the radio episodes run on the ABC’s Australia All Over on Sundays, 100,000 more copies were sold before Christmas 1991. While Hugh works on the musical based on Origin, some doomsayers have stated that “Rugby League people don’t go to the theatre!”

“Before the exams Sister James pinned a holy medal to my chest, telling me it was a St Jude blessing, as he was the patron saint of Hopeless Causes. “St Jude improved my English just enough.” This writer recalls the State Government naming Hugh Lunn as a “Queensland icon” – confirmed as one of 15 “influential artists” in the State’s history which included the Bee Gees, David Malouf, Geoffrey Rush and Powderfinger. “Secondly, going overseas with Ken Fletcher in 1964; thirdly the Vietnam War. Fourthly, the West New Guinea Act of Free Choice in 1969 when I was a Reuters correspondent in Indonesia.

said: “Huggles, you twerp. I am going to come over and rock your roof!” Both Jim and Brother Dillon however, remained good friends with the author. The childhood memoir had a big flow-on as it had broken a few records in Australian bestseller lists and led to more books on the Lunn family. He says: “I had to sell my house with its tennis court to finance Over the Top and that interfered with my tennis. I still play tennis three times a week,” mused Hugh. So Hugh Lunn, now in his 70s and playing good tennis, names his mum Olive as the one who strengthened his “skinny legs” by insisting on tapdancing lessons. All four kids learned tap-dancing.

Photo: Tim Swanston.

Lunn as a journalist up to 1988 won three Walkley Awards, and as a writer The Age Book of the Year 1985 for Vietnam: A Reporter’s War.

During that war he found himself smack in the middle of the Tet Offensive. Hugh lost two room-mate reporters in that period, which affected him badly: “I was lucky to get out – many of my friends didn’t.” Although he wrote the book in 1968, no one would publish it until 1985. Publishers repeated that no one wanted to read about the Vietnam War. This book is still selling well, particularly in America where it was first re-published in New York in 1986, having sold 2500 in the past 6 months. Of the 15 books Hugh Lunn has written, this writer has researched that they total over 600,000 in sales, and the most recent publications have included Working for Rupert (2001) and The Great Fletch (2008).

“The UN gave only 1025 citizens the right to represent their country and the Indonesian military supervised their voting. “The next important pivotal moment was marrying my wife Helen when I was 40. “Helen is my greatest asset, and we are a good team. “Fred, my dad, had always said: ‘Hughie, I’ll have to nurse you until you are 40.’ “The next pivotal times were the publication of my books in the 1980s. My book on Vietnam was considered to be literature and it was widely used through Australian schools as reading matter. “Sister James would have liked that. Then Over the Top with Jim.

Asked what were the most pivotal stages of his life, Hugh said: “Firstly my Scholarship exam, where Sister Vincent would not nominate me and I had to nominate myself.

“I had Jim Egoroff to thank for that. When Jim read the book in London, he flew to Brisbane, landed on my doorstep shouting: ‘Let me in, Lunn. I have come to punish you for your sins!’

“I passed but only just – getting 76 out of 150 for English.

Brother “Basher”, (the book character name and nickname later revealed to be actually Brother Dillon) also phoned Hugh at his home and

“If you failed English you failed Scholarship and couldn’t go on to secondary school!

At Terrace, it was compulsory to play rugby, so Brother “Basher”, “who was handsome and tough and had eyes like a gunfighter”, lined up 150 under15s aspirants to select teams from As down to Is, the ninths. “Basher” named a date for first training, and Hugh put up his hand, saying: “Sister, I mean Sir, I have my tap-dancing lessons that morning.” Consternation and laughs, and “Basher” had “no time for squibs and squirts who tap-danced”. Hugh and Jim were named in the Ninths and Hugh was dropped to nowhere after the first game. By his Senior year, though, Hugh was named in the Terrace Firsts, at fullback, and Brother “Basher” was the coach, and he by then had a better opinion of our Hughie, who showed that tap-dancing improved his sidestep and who had learned to tackle in his backyard under the tutelage of big brother Jack. The girls enjoyed playing too, until the day Hugh, urged on by Jack: “tackle low!” broke his sister’s arm. Fred was taking a hard stance about this until football-loving Olive stated: “Well, he saved a certain try.” September 2016 I villageNews

Indochina adventuring

village travel

A highlight was a trip to view the UNESCO world-heritage site of Angkor Wat, the world’s largest temple complex.

ANNA STEWART Drifting gently down the mighty Mekong River through Cambodia and Vietnam aboard a luxury riverboat, it’s potentially easy to forget that this region of Southeast Asia known collectively as Indochina has had more than its fair share of tough times. On the ground, reminders are still there but the warm welcome from the local people ensures the region’s dark history leaves the lesser impression. A recent week-long 460 kilometre cruise aboard the RV Cruiseco Adventurer on the fascinating Tonle Sap Lake and Mekong waterways provided a glimpse into the heart of Cambodia and Vietnam, and gave us access to small villages where we were frequently the only Westerners in town.

Each day brought a new adventure, with small boats ferrying us ashore to meet the locals and gain insights into the history and culture.

Our cruise manager invites us to freely distribute useful items such as pens, pencils, notepads and the occasional lollypop to the children.

The shore excursions themselves made the “planes, trains and automobiles” concept seem quite dull by comparison.

The optional on-board lectures about Cambodia, Vietnam and the Mekong (which we learn to pronounce “May-Kong” rather than “Me”) ensure we are equipped with some local knowledge before we head ashore.

We board a convoy of ox-cart wagons rumbling through villages and verdant countryside, take escorted rickshaw (or “xe loi”) rides and tuktuk expeditions and on small local motorboats, we drift among floating fishing villages and markets. We all love the chance to take leisurely walking tours through towns and villages, where more often than not we’re accompanied by curious children, laughing and smiling.

A stand-out experience was meeting a “retired” 82-year-old university professor in Koh Chen who, despite being branded an intellectual, had survived the worst of Cambodia’s Pol Pot era and was now providing free schooling to children in the small Cambodian village, determined to make a difference to their lives. Another magic moment was when students learning English in a tiny village school sang their national anthem to us, resplendent in their blindingly white shirts and immaculately presented uniforms. We visited attractions, temples, monuments and markets in Cambodia and Vietnam and small-operation businesses and factories where we saw silk textiles and rattan mats being woven, silverware being created, pottery and bricks being fired and even rice candies being manufactured.

Excellent on-board Asian and Western cuisine ensured waistlines were given plenty of reason to expand and the nightly entertainment included songs from our versatile Cambodian cruise manager, Rosie. While not on excursions, we were mesmerised by the river, which is the 12th longest in the world. Large clumps of green water hyacinth float by and the river traffic includes everything from small sampans through to huge barges, many of which tempted the laws of buoyancy, being loaded down to the absolute waterline. I’m the only one on the sun deck when the Vietnamese Customs Officer heads back to shore in his boat, after completing the on-board border crossing formalities, as we move from Cambodian waters into Vietnam.

His smile and cheery wave to me sums up why this is such a special part of the world.

The pre-cruise program commenced with several days in the resort town of Siem Reap in Cambodia where we stayed at the historic Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor.

Young voices regularly float across to us from the riverbanks as we cruise past villages, with the “helloooo” from the local children providing a delightfully warm connection to passengers.

The town’s main attraction was the UNESCO world-heritage site of Angkor Wat, the world’s largest temple complex. We also visited the crumbling and rather eerie ruins of Ta Prohm temple, which is slowly being consumed and strangled by the surrounding jungle.

In the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, we visit the beautiful Royal Palace and National Museum and I particularly enjoy a cocktail on the rooftop of the renowned Foreign Correspondents’ Club, surrounded by photo-journalism memorabilia from another era.

Our home for the week, the 29-cabin RV Cruiseco Adventurer, is a luxury airconditioned vessel. Each ensuite cabin has a private balcony, ceiling to floor windows, polished timber floors and quality appointments.

Our final destination, Saigon, delivers the anticipated bustle and excitement, along with a fascinating history … and millions of scooters. Visit www.cruising.com.au/ship/ cruiseco-adventurer

Q

Q

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP THREE DESTINATIONS AND WHY?

ANY “SPECIAL EXPERIENCE” STORIES?

I was lucky enough to get the chance to fly Concorde from London to New York. It was part of a roundthe-world first-class trip I won, not long after we moved to Hong Kong.

Anywhere in Spain, particularly the Boqueria Market in Barcelona – the food! Montreal – the food! And try to visit in autumn when the leaves are in full colour. The Barossa – the wine!

Q

ANY REALLY MEMORABLE DINING WHILE TRAVELLING?

A FAVOURITE TRAVEL TALE?

While on safari in Botswana, my wife Evelyn literally saved our guide as he unknowingly walked towards a lion. She spotted it guarding its prey behind a bush, yelled “Lion!” and the guide was back in our vehicle, just as the lion was deciding he might possibly make a better meal.

Travel can also be all about timing. After retiring from Cathay Pacific, I finished my career flying for Qatar Airways. That time in the Middle East provided us with the opportunity to travel throughout the whole region. Just about all of those countries are now “off limits” (if you’re sensible). For example, our last trip in the region was to Syria, which sadly is not somewhere on the tourist trail these days!

YOUR #1 MOST PRACTICAL TRAVEL TIP TO SHARE?

Don’t take your shoes off on the plane, at least until the aircraft is climbing away, and then put them back on for landing. Do you really want to potentially run barefoot through burning fuel and sharp metal!

Q

ANY FAVOURITE BOOKS OR TRAVEL APPS OR WEBSITES?

Because we travel almost exclusively for the local food, we search on the web rather than in books, which can be out of date restaurant-wise. In Australia The Australian’s food writer, John Lethlean always gets it right. Free apps for public transport/local taxis are everywhere you travel, but don’t go anywhere these days without the Uber app. It’s the best thing that’s happened for the traveller.

Views from the Cat BOOK LAUNCH “I used to notice CityCat passengers enjoying the sunshine and others’ company but Brisbane’s riverside stories and buildings were just passing them by,” says David Gibson, historian and commentator. “So I penned a short adventure on the views seen from a CityCat.” The result is the “upside-down” Heritage Trail booklet, the highlights of which David will spell out when he is guest speaker at the September meeting of the New Farm and Districts Historical Society. All are welcome on Saturday, September 24 at Merthyr Road Uniting Church Centre from 2-4pm. Bring along a friend to enjoy David’s talk followed by afternoon tea. “There’s a right bike for everyone,” says Matt Hopper, owner of AvantiPlus - The Valley, and at his store it comes “at the right price.”

Matt hired the full-time mechanics along with a full-time female staff member, which Matt says is great to have in “a male-dominated industry.”

Both Matt and his wife, Melissa, come from a triathlon background. Melissa is an accountant by trade and Matt is a plumber by trade. Despite their expected career paths, at the end of their sporting careers they both decided to move into something they both love: cycling.

Matt says that in his store “it doesn’t matter what level of rider you are. We have experienced staff that always get you on the right bike for your needs,”

When the store first opened in 2009 it was just Matt, Melissa, and one mechanic. Now, seven years later, the store is Australia’s biggest AvantiPlus dealer, employing two full-time mechanics and a predominantly fulltime staff. A strong team of 8 now.

Staying fit has been made easier with many local community groups & services offering fun ways to your heart rate going. Find your perfect niche with one of the many options available.

“As a local business, it’s grown beyond our expectations,” says Matt, as he gives credit of the growth to his team over the years, “it’s a team effort, we’re the face of it, but you’re only as good as everyone who works in the shop.” AvantiPlus prides itself on customer experience, which is why

Proving his care for his customers, Matt says that he would “rather not sell someone a bike if the one they were looking at is totally wrong for what they want to do.” Despite that, it might be hard not to find the right bike because Matt stocks an impressive range of products alongside his exclusively stocked Avanti bikes, including Scott, Felt and Fuji bikes. But Matt doesn’t only tailor the customer experience to professional cyclists and triathletes. “We do everything,” Matt says, “we have an option for all styles because we do kids bikes right through to high-end bikes.”

7 Steps: 1

Set a goal…not just weight.

Scales don’t always tell the whole story. With weight loss, plateaus are common. If you set yourself a goal beyond the immediate, you’re likely to maintain your motivation. For example, aim to beat your last week performance – the endurance and strength you gain from exercise will help you achieve these activity goals, no matter what the scale says. No ladies at our gym have ever complained about having to go shopping for smaller dress sizes.

2

Find A routine that works for you.

YMCA Bowen Hills has 24/7 Virtual Group Fitness classes that allow you to train anytime that suits your lifestyle. Different things work for different people – some prefer group exercise orweights and some like to mix it up and some prefer to do the same exercises in the same sequence. You’re more likely to adhere to your exercise plan if it fits your style.

YMCA TIPS to get fit for summer

3

Don’t just focus on cardio; strength-training is important TOO. Building lean muscle does burn fat, but not as much as cardio. However, it’s still an equally important part of any get fit plan. Strength and endurance require strong core muscles, legs, and arms. If you don’t know what exercises to do come to the YMCA Bowen Hills and have a complimentary Personal Training session to help you get started.

4

5

Don’t get injured!

Exercising irresponsibly can land you with an injury that leaves you on the sidelines. Don’t let a tight summer deadline trick you into overdoing it. If you’re fairly new to exercise, rest is very important, drink lots of water and gradually increase intensity.

6

Routine bored? do something different.

You don’t have to do the same exercises every time. There are so

many different types of exercise – KettleWorX, Grit, interval training, circuit training, yoga, pilates cycle, Pump, Boxing , Adult Gymnastics, running – who said you have to choose one and stick to it? Nothing worse than Boredom; combat it by switching things up when needed.

7

Keep a food journal.

Writing down what you eat can help you keep calories in check.

Mix it up with challenges.

The YMCA Bowen Hills has a variety of Challenges from 10 week challenge to Boxing Contender to regular Myzone challenges. Join in they are fun Keeping up with your long-term routine can get a little stale. Throw in a weekly challenge when you feel your motivation lagging.

almost a resort lifestyle,” he said.

As the Newstead rental market expands, so too does the demand for experienced building managers such as Keith and Heather Braithwaite, who have recently moved back to the area to manage “Unison at Waterfront” by Mirvac.

“It’s Mirvac quality instead of smaller apartments that are built primarily for investors.” He said Newstead was an ideal location because of its proximity to the city and the fantastic infrastructure surrounding the area.

“Heather and I have been managing buildings since the late 90s,” said Mr Braithwaite.

Tenants range from “young professionals to empty nesters who are looking for apartment living”.

“Mirvac needed experienced managers and they asked us to open Unison for them.”

“We’ve got a range of apartments,” he said, with rental prices going “from $400 a week for a single-bedroom up to $1500 a week for a luxury threebedroom at the top of the building with views out to the Bay.”

They are managing slightly fewer than 40 apartments in the first stage of the “Unison” development, with a further 80 arriving in the new year as the second stage is completed.

Open inspections of “Unison by Mirvac” are every Saturday from 9am to 1pm or by appointment. Contact Keith and Heather on 0438 462 370.

He said that Unison apartments were a different product from others in the area due to the emphasis on lifestyle. “We’re a bit larger, the quality of finish is better and we are set up for

Pop goes the Wasteland Acid-drenched, bombastic, neoexpressionist pop is the best way to describe upcoming Fortitude Valley art exhibition Wasteland by Johnny Romeo at the Mitchell Fine Art Gallery. The exhibition will showcase Romeo’s country-western, punk pieces with its roots in his hip-hop inspired history of graffiti street art. “I wanted to approach my art practice with the same unpredictability and hell-or-high water attitude as the cowboys and mavericks on my canvases,” said Romeo. Mitchell Fine Art Gallery is promising a “raucous and rollicking journey through the wild frontiers of pop” with an exhibition that blends “painting, sculpture and strip-mall signage. ‘Aged’ still means ‘ignored’: report

Speakers’ retreat inspires women More women need to be prepared, ready and able to speak in public forums, according to Lynne Schinella, workplace communications consultant of Teneriffe. She believes that professional women should actively seek out opportunities to speak publicly, instead of meekly waiting to be asked. Lynne is no stranger to the fear of public speaking. She said she had “choked” many times on stage before embracing that fear and turning it into positive energy. “I’ve seen first-hand where senior women, confident and competent in their field, knock back invitations to speak or take part in keynote presentations,” she said. “They’ll often delegate that option to someone else, either out of fear of

speaking or because they feel they’re not a worthy candidate.” Lynne has been successfully running “Executive Women’s Speaker Retreats” around the country and will be staging the inaugural Queensland event at Spicer’s Hidden Vale resort in the Lockyer Valley from October 9-12. The residential retreat will be limited to a small group of smart, successful women working together for three days and nights in a beautiful rural environment.

Citing a “Golden Age Index” which measures the extent to which people over 55 remain active members of the labour force, Australia was ranked 16th out of 34 OECD countries. New Zealand by comparison has risen from 9th to second on the list and is the leader in the Asia–Pacific region. Countries that performed strongly had three labour market themes in common: encouraging later retirement; improving employability and lifelong education and training; and reducing employment barriers for older workers. According to the report, if Australia’s employment rates for workers aged 55plus were increased to those in Sweden (where 74 per cent of those aged 55-64 are employed), gains could be up to

Five years of 5km New Farm Parkrun is inviting the community to attend its 5th anniversary on September 17 at New Farm Park as it continues to promote healthy lifestyles and a connected community. Rhondda Wetton, New Farm Parkrun Organiser, said: “anybody from the community can attend this event. We’re looking for people to join in and start a healthy lifestyle.” “There are two parts to Parkrun. One is about physical activity and having a healthy lifestyle, the other part is about creating a social connection in the community.

Australia’s mature-age participation rates are slowly but steadily climbing and both sides of politics have demonstrated a commitment to this over the years. While not wanting older workers employed at the expense of the younger generations, we can and should do better as keeping older Australians in the workforce for longer is a win-win situation. In September, after our AGM which is followed by lunch in the Uniting Church complex courtyard on September 7, the Branch plans: • Thursdays from 10am: Learn Mahjong (Eastern style) at Café 63. • Friday September 16 from 9am: “Stitch and Bitch” meeting in New Farm Library. • Friday September 16 from 6pm: Dinner at the New Farm Bowls Club in Brunswick Street when we particularly welcome those interested in National Seniors who cannot attend day-time activities. • Wednesday September 21: Community bus excursion to antique and op shops around this peninsula. • Wednesday October 5 9.15am to 2pm: Wine and Cheese at the Uniting Church complex in Merthyr Road. www.nsanewfarmbranch.com.

planner Proposals, wedding bells and preparations are in the air this month for Spring weddings. Your happily ever is just around the corner with New Farm’s local and high-end shopping and services. The precinct is up-to-date with the latest trends in bridal, making it a breeze for wedding planning, as well as indulging in the finest things that the area can offer.

New owners of Envisage Dental, Dr Mark Calvert and Arthur Walsh have transformed the three-day practise to a five-day practise, having more on offer to leave you smiling all day long!

Sargun Beauty Bar is the new one-stop shop for all things beauty, welcoming all brides-to-be in store for the perfect eyelash and eyebrow package for $25!

“We have expanded our services with late nights and opening on Saturday mornings, as people ask for those times when planning special occasions like weddings,” Dr Calvert said.

Beauty is a part of life for Sargun owner Rupinder Thind and she wants every woman to experience the services on offer such as facials, lash perming, waxing, threading and henna tattoos.

If you’re looking for something extra for your big day, Dr Calvert and Dr Walsh are fully qualified in tooth whitening or cosmetic injections.

“In India, it is traditional for women to have henna tattoos for

functions and special occasions like a wedding,” she said. “I also offer this service here because henna is something special and beautiful.” The products that she uses are authentic and natural, using pure olive oil wax for arms and legs. “For your eyebrows and full face, threading is the best option - it’s long-lasting, natural looking and only takes me 5-7 minutes to thread someones eyebrows,” Rupinder said.

“There’s nothing to be worried about with cosmetic injections, they last 6 months at a time and are a very natural-looking enhancement of your features.” On a daily basis, Envisage also offer a range of services for the family. “We have options for everyone, for children we offer gap free dental or if you don’t have private health insurance then we have a $99 check and clean deal,” Kaitlin Cowie Clinic Coordinator said.

Creator, Jo-Anne Maree says that she is proud of the success of their strong brand over the decade and is looking forward to the birthday celebrations in the Mooloolaba salon on the 6th of September.

‘We are thrilled to be able to offer new and exciting customer-based initiatives this year to officially celebrate the brand’s success and unwavering customer support on our ten-year anniversary.’ The Brazilian Hut has been the go-to brand for specialised waxing in Australia, leading the industry in its separation of waxing from beauty salons and making it a specialised service.

“I have a chat about their special day to see what the couple would like me to perform so I can tailor the music to the occasion and they can also come see me play. They can request tunes or if there is a special song they want as their first dance I am happy to learn new material. A lot of people have been looking for classic pop and soul from the 60s to 80s at the moment.” Darren makes sure that your special day goes smoothly coming prepared with material and “a bit of everything” in case and will not turn away any requests on the night. To further your enjoyment, he can offer a four-piece band if desired.

Matcha Maker

so I applied for a working holiday. I met this German company who own a tea farm in Japan. They asked me to come with them to exhibitions to make Matcha tea more appealing. I learnt a lot about Matcha, created many recipes and after six months I opened a pop-up tea house in London. When my visa ran out I had the chance to extend or return home and I decided I wanted to bring this to Hong Kong.

village food ANNABELLE CHAPPLE Sinmei Tea is a hidden James Street sensation. Nestled inside Scrumptious Reads, the café’s unusual tea-based drinks and colourful cakes have amassed a devoted social media following attracting customers from outer suburbs, even overseas. This month marks a year since owner Sinmei Cheung opened the doors to her Brisbane store, after opening a tea shop by the same name in her native Hong Kong in 2012. New Farm Village News sat down with Sinmei and learnt how a car crash changed her life, for the better.

Q

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN LIVING IN BRISBANE?

I came to Australia in 1998, had half a year in Melbourne, then moved here. I was doing an accounting and information systems degree.

Q

WHAT CAME AFTER YOUR DEGREE?

My ex-partner was a cook so after I graduated we started a seafood restaurant in Bellbowrie. After five years I started studying interior design and at the end of the first semester was in a car crash. In those few seconds I thought that was it. It was a big impact that unconsciously changed my behaviour. I realised we have to do the things that we really want to do in life.

Q

SO SINMEI TEA WAS BORN OUT OF THE CRASH?

Yes. I had to stay home, was reading more magazines and saw this trendy tea movement going on in Hong Kong, so I went back. I thought, “This is something interesting I want to see.” My cousin, who knows a lot about tea, said, “This is not authentic. You’ve

been overseas too long.” He took me to Chinese tea places and since then I’ve been in love with tea.

Q

YOU WEREN’T ALREADY FAMILIAR WITH CHINESE TEA CULTURE?

No. That’s why I opened my tea shop in Hong Kong because I think most young people would be like me, do more Westernised things.

Q

HOW DID YOU COME TO OPEN YOUR FIRST STORE?

I was doing wholesale tea to Hong Kong cafés and hotels while I was a personal trainer. So tea and fitness came into my life at the same time after the crash. I also travelled more and after a holiday to London returned home and quit my job. The tea houses over there have history, some are 200 years old, I was amazed by that

Q

WHEN DID YOU OPEN YOUR HONG KONG SHOP?

I went back in August 2011 and opened December. Food blogging was starting at that time so I registered my business on OpenRice [like Zomato]. The shop was really quiet for six, seven, eight months then this girl came, took a lot of pictures, and was the first one to post a review. Her followers started to come, then newspapers, magazines and TV. The most talked-about menu item was the lava cake, people queued hours to try it and once this girl cried because we sold the last one before she got to try.

Q

WHY COME BACK TO BRISBANE?

Julie [Tjiandra, Scrumptious Reads owner] because she had this great space. We met years earlier during that interior design course. Plus I like Brisbane for the lifestyle and people.

Sinmei’s Matcha Loaf Cake

SYRUP

CAKE 4 tsp 120ml 200g 1 cup 3 100g 100g

Matcha powder whole milk, warmed unsalted butter, room temp caster sugar eggs, room temp plain flour self raising flour

ANNABELLE’S TIPS:

This was a fun recipe to try, I’ve never made a green-coloured cake before let alone one with the health benefits of Matcha! There are a few tricks to perfecting the cake, most importantly before you start baking prepare your Matcha tea and taste it. Mine had added sugar and if yours does too I suggest reducing the sugar in your cake batter to half a cup. The loaf tin I used was not quite the right size, so try the smaller size mentioned in the recipe, if you’ve got it. Feel free to substitute 200g of margarine for butter – Sinmei uses Meadow Lea. The cooking time of the cake will vary oven to oven so start checking it from the 40-minute mark to be safe. Finally, don’t be afraid to pour the syrup on the cake: it does slowly soak it up.

Preheat fan forced oven to 150°C. Grease a regular loaf tin (20 x 10 x 7cm) and line with a long piece of baking paper so it overhangs. Vigorously whisk Matcha powder into warmed milk to make tea, set aside. Cream butter until light in colour and gradually add sugar until combined. Add eggs one at a time, beating between each addition. Carefully add the tea and sieved flours to butter mixture half at a time, stirring until just combined.

3 tsp 4 tsp ½ cup

Matcha powder caster sugar hot water (just boiled)

ingredients method Using a spatula, scrape the cake mixture into tin and bake for 50 minutes. While the cake is baking make the syrup by whisking Matcha in a bowl with hot water, ensuring it’s lump free. Add sugar to taste. The cake is ready when golden on top and a skewer comes out clean. Leave to cool in tin for 10 to 15 minutes then drizzle syrup on top and remove from tin when ready to eat.

The Greatest Renovator on Teneriffe Hill!

3

Teneriffe 16 Teneriffe Drive

Auction Friday, 2nd September 2016, 10:30am Ray White Corporate, 26/111 Eagle St, Brisbane If not SOLD prior

This is one of the last renovators left. The majority have been bought, renovated, held for decades and loved. Having personally lived on Teneriffe Hill for years, I wish I was in a position to buy 16 Teneriffe Drive. You can move in now, enjoy it for what it is, and plan your dream renovation in the years to come. Just take your time with it and get a feel for the house first.. there’s no rush. In all its form, this is a true cottage with the best view on the Hill. Sitting within a one minute stroll to the local’s park’ on one side, and with point blank views of the river and Hamilton from the back, it’s hard to ignore the sheer value this renovator represents. Make no mistake; this is a very real chance to buy on the golden mile of Teneriffe Hill. Very rarely does an original cottage with cracking views become available, and if there is any house you don’t want to miss, it’s 16 Teneriffe Drive.

Hamish has recently sold two properties of mine, and both times, he worked relentlessly to get the result I was after and operated with a high level of integrity and consistency throughout. Hamish’s hard and work and determination gave me a great sense of assurance and an unwavering belief in his ability to find the right buyer. He worked with dogged determination and unquestionably left no stone unturned in pre-auction marketing campaign. He went above and beyond to meet prospective buyers and to respond to the high level of enquiry. I found it easy to develop a rapport with Hamish and a professional relationship based on openness, honesty and trust. Hamish bought a fantastic sense of humor and personality to what can be a daunting and tedious process. I sincerely thank him and have no hesitation in giving him my highest recommendation. The good news is people are paying for quality. The quality of a suburb and property. Our area has bounced back nicely since the election result was announced. But it did grind to a screeching holt around the election. I hadn’t experienced the market stop so suddenly since the GFC in October 2008. The good news is over the last 6 weeks open houses have filled back up, buyers are making offers and a number of homes are now expected to hit the market over the next 5 weeks. One of the hardest things for parochial locals has been the lack of property available for sale. As this opens up and those people find homes, they will in turn sell theirs and this should see a very solid platform for the local housing market for the balance of the year.

In the unit market I have been pleasantly surprised by the interest from buyers. As a boutique office we have punched above our weight in that department this month. We have sold a unit a week for the last 6 weeks with an average of 21 days on the market. Almost all with multiple offers. Price and property is the key partnership in this department. Buyers will pay for a unique or quality property and a ‘generic’ unit will still see strong interest if priced correctly. I read a report this week from JLL, it showcased the extraordinary result from local developers Cavcorp & Aria. These companies have prided themselves on going the extra mile for quality. I spoke with Damian Cavallucci from Cavcorp and he commented, “there are approximately 100 differences between our apartments and our competition in the market”. This certainly seems to be ringing true with both developers showing capital growth for their investors in one of the most aggressive apartment markets in decades. People paying for quality shouldn’t surprise us on the Peninsula. One of the key factors that drives prices is the locals determination to stay local. We are prepared to pay the premium for the walking distance of amenities, the beauty of our parks/river precinct and the cosmopolitan lifestyle that it affords.

THE OTHER SIDE WITH IVO KORNEL

Possibly my favourite expression, despite it being dark and Medieval, is “There’s more than one way to skin a cat.” All businesses, in all industries, whether big or small must listen. They must listen to both their clients and the current market and quickly adapt because the market is fluid. What worked yesterday may not work today. Right now in New Farm auctions aren’t working, and we’re listening. According to RPData this year’s auction clearance rates in New Farm are at a low 22.6% Clearance Rate. Out of 53 Auctions in 2016 in New Farm 39 passed in at auction, 1 was withdrawn, 1 sold prior to and only 12 properties sold at auction.

recommending the method of sale that will, based on current facts, actually sell their home. The other consideration is that auctions are often recommended because auction campaigns demand big advertising budgets and big advertising budgets means the agent becomes famous very quickly. Don’t get me wrong, advertising works, but the method of sale sours the integrity.

These are factual figures but we don’t hear them often. We’re told different Clearance Rates sometimes Qld based or from Brisbane suburbs I’ve never heard of. Sometimes agencies include in their auction clearance rates, properties that sold weeks earlier or weeks after the event by normal sale.

93 Villiers Street, New Farm sold in 6 weeks and we were inundated with buyers, running 120 through the property and selling with a cash offer in a multi-offer scenario. The constant feedback from buyers was, “Thank goodness this isn’t an auction.” Buyers were really grateful to be given a choice.

How can local real estate agencies purport messages of high auction success in today’s market and why do they do this? Often as a brand grows it evolves from its beginnings and favours the method of sale that delivered them success. If it’s an auction based agency the same auction propaganda is often delivered to clients time and time again but somewhere in that process integrity is lost, because the agent isn’t

I’ve learnt a lot in the last year and I’m listening. We’re providing the alternative.
