between the two, essential for the maintenance of law and order, is fractured. A report just released by the Crime and Corruption Commission underlines how fragile this bond has become in the wake of the now infamous bashing of a man by police in the basement of the Surfers Paradise police station. Video footage obtained by the media showed four police involved in the incident, but none of the four ever faced criminal charges. Two were stood down but remained on full pay while an investigation was held, one later being reinstated and the other retiring before any action was taken. However the man who is accused of leaking the footage to the media, Sergeant Rick Flori, is facing seven years in prison.

The CCC report says it “remains concerned about a number of aspects of the police discipline system in Queensland” and makes particular mention of some of the penalties imposed by internal affairs investigations by the Queensland Police Service’s own Ethical Standards Command. “(They) have the potential to undermine public confidence in the QPS and the discipline system it administers,’’ the report says. The CCC report, however, agreed with a police decision not to charge anyone over the bashing because it was unlikely to succeed in court without evidence from the complainant. The CCC appears to have forgotten that justice must not only be done but seen to be done. Civil liberties lawyer Terry O’Gorman has said he was ``dumbfounded’’ by the CCC’s decision “There will be many Queenslanders who fall over backwards laughing at this decision,” he said. Sadly, those laughs will be at the expense of the Queensland Police Service.

Catholic School at Bowen Hills, which was run by the Sisters of Mercy, many a time my older sister, Claire, and I were sent by the nuns to ask for flowers for the church from the local residents. Mrs Bonney was one of the residents we visited quite frequently and I remember her as being a very gracious lady. I can recall my parents saying how nice it was to have such a famous lady living in our street. The story of Mrs Bonney’s adventure into flying is inspiring. Thanks for a great article. Disappearance of old Valley fig tree still a mystery I LIVE in the Valley, up in Light St. There are a selection of houses up here, it is a little precinct that we all love. On the weekend a large and very old tree was removed, a fig tree, that provided some form of green in an ever-increasing concrete jungle. I didn’t bother to ask the guys why they were cutting (I actually thought they were trimming it) and figured they’d just give me the ‘doing my job’ line. I drove past yesterday and someone has put a sign up saying Brisbane City Council was responsible

and to call town planning to voice concerns, which I did. They knew nothing of it, the land and house is not being developed either, so I’m struggling to understand why they would cut it down. It smells fishy to me and I thought awareness via your magazine might be good. Craig St John Fortitude Valley

Begonia society in full bloom at New Farm BEGONIAS in Flower will be the set topic when the Queensland Begonia Society Inc. meets for its monthly meeting on Saturday, 19 September. Other cultural items and hints will also be discussed. There will also be an open display table and another display table for plants other than Begonias. The ongoing success of the Teneriffe Festival has also been one of the highlights of his involvement with the area. “I’ve been engaged with the festival right from the start but it’s the residents and the business that have been the driving forces behind it. “The council has been happy to provide financial support for it. What is pleasing about it is that while the dollar amount hasn’t changed that much from the start, the reliance on the council has diminished as it’s become more popular with sponsors.” “It’s been wonderful to have had the opportunity to represent the area at City Hall. “It was our first home when we moved to Queensland in 2001. We lived here for a couple of years before we moved to where we now live at Hendra and will still spend some of our leisure time here. It’s a great area,” he says.

Fig tree welcome to New Farm

The Brisbane Central Scouts at the recent Cub Camp at Baden Powell Park, Samford.

Scouts scouting for new members of all ages Custom-made artwork by local artist Gert Geyer. SILVERSTONE Developments’ latest development on New Farm’s Brunswick St, Modello apartments, showcases the work of a local Brisbane artist with a prominent façade artwork. Managing director Troy Daffy said that great care was taken to design a development that blended in to the surrounds and reflected the unique culture of New Farm. “Given Modello’s prominent position on the corner of Brunswick and Kent streets we went to great lengths to ensure Modello would add to the aesthetic appeal of the area,” Mr Daffy said. “We saw an opportunity to create

a large scale façade artwork that enhanced the street appeal and reflected the New Farm spirit. “We then commissioned local artist Gert Geyer, who we commissioned to create a custommade artwork. “The theme of a fig tree evolved as very evocative of New Farm and its iconic park, and we engaged a local photographer to photograph the majestic figs in New Farm Park, to use as a starting point for Gert’s piece. “In consultation with council, Gert created the façade which now defines this busy intersection and adds to the building’s visual appeal.”

THE Brisbane Central Scouts are looking for new recruits both young and a little bit older. The Scouts are for children aged from six to 15 and meet every Tuesday during school terms at the New Farm State School at 6.30pm. The group is also looking for volunteers to help look after the Joeys (aged six to seven and a half years) and Cubs (aged seven and a half years to 10 and a half years), as well as a District Secretary to attend a few meetings each year and take minutes. Locations a lasting tribute to lifetime of community service

IMAGINE heading overseas at the age of 55 to help the war effort. That’s just how both Dr Lilian Violet Cooper (1861-1947) and her lifetime companion Mary Josephine Bedford (1861-1955) responded in 1916 when Allied WWI casualties were mounting.

historicalsociety by Gerard Benjamin Both volunteered with the women’s organisation, the Scottish Women’s Hospital, where they served on the Macedonian Front for 12 months, as surgeon and orderly respectively. A fellow orderly was Miles Franklin (1879–1954), author of the sensational novel, My Brilliant Career (1902). Dr Cooper and Miss Bedford had met at university in London and they emigrated in 1891. The doctor made her mark in Brisbane as being the first woman to practice medicine in Queensland, and, at a time when few women drove, she was a foundation member of the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland. Described as a “tall, angular,

brusque, energetic woman, prone to bad language”, stories about Dr Cooper’s outspokenness and abrupt manner were considered legendary. Nevertheless, it was said of her: “She has worn down all that barbaric opposition which once existed against her in her capacity as a lady doctor, by sheer good nature and hard work.” The women were posted to the Scottish Woman’s Hospital at Ostrovo (known as the America Unit). Amidst the mountainous terrain, Miss Bedford was given the task of organising all of the hospital’s motor transport, which included “15 ambulances, two trucks and a touring car” which were driven by young women. Within months, both were despatched to a 40-bed advance dressing station close to the front line. Despite appalling conditions, Dr Cooper’s skill meant that during this eight-month period, only 16 of the 144 patients upon whom she operated died. As a result, both women received the Order of St Sava, Serbia’s medal for humanitarian service. After the war, Miss Bedford returned to her activity in child welfare, including the Creche and Kindergarten Association, which she had helped to found in 1907. In 1927, she was present at the

Bounded by Water, Love and Quarry Streets, it has been known since 1959 as Bedford Playground. These days, the Friends of Bedford Park endeavour to protect the space as a community hub and as a “village common” for local residents. Following Dr Cooper’s death in 1947, Josephine Bedford bequeathed the site where St Vincent’s Hospital at Kangaroo Point now stands.

Adjacent to the hospital carpark is the 1930s-40s art deco-style building known as Bedford House. At the nearby historic St Mary’s Anglican Church, a double stained glass window is dedicated to Dr Cooper’s memory.

Bandstand centre stage for 100th birthday ONE of the suburb’s emblematic and most photographed structures, New Farm Park’s Bandstand, has just turned 100, and the New Farm & Districts Historical Society will help to mark the centenary at its September meeting. The guest speaker will be Ray Osborne, team leader of the Brisbane City Council’s Heritage Unit. View from the Rotunda (Gladys According to Ray, “The park’s bandstand Blundell, watercolour, NFDHS) and original Kiosk (burnt down in September 2000) were designed by Albert Herbert Foster, the Architectural Assistant to the City Engineer.” “It was not his first design for a bandstand, nor his last, and I will highlight other bandstands that he designed,” he said.

Opposition leader Cr Milton Dick paid tribute to Cr Abrahams, recognising her tireless work in the local community. “Helen has been a passionate advocate for the inner south of Brisbane, a place she calls home and loves,” Cr Dick said. “She has a strong character and is someone who has always stood up for what she believes in. “Helen has been one of the hardest working elected representatives I’ve worked with, often going beyond the call of duty helping those most in need. “I pay tribute to her 24 years of service in the Brisbane City Council and I know she will continue to play an active role in the community.”

Dynamic, vibrant and diverse future for New Farm Rotary

By Alisa Cork

NEW Rotary New Farm President Denise Buckby has issued a challenge for people in the local community using the organisation’s global theme for the new 2015 term – ‘Be a gift to the world’. Rewarded at district level Denise was elected to the New Farm Rotary Club’s top position and sworn in at a changeover dinner last month. “Rotary New Farm is looming in the new age of service giving, and we are no longer ‘pale male and stale’, but we are dynamic and vibrant and now through vocation and community, we can create good will on a day to day basis,” Denise said. “Fun, fellowship and service is as vital and as relevant today as it was when Paul Harris founded Rotary 120 years ago. We are looking to see how we can help our community with time, energy and talent and encourage people to join us.” No stranger to managing the ‘vocational club of the year for the South East Queensland area’, Denise stood in for past president John O’Byrne last year when he was unable to continue his tenure and her drive to engage with members and become more interactive with the local community is even more fervent with

this year’s new focus. “Being a gift to the world is something that every person everywhere can do, and so many are already doing this for the people in their world,” Denise said. “Rotary New Farms sees the beginning of this year with the changeover dinner as an opportunity to review the year past and look at the year ahead with the theme in mind.” Denise believes ‘Being a gift to the world’ means simply being of service to people in small or large ways personally or within a group, and that,

through the use of one’s own gifts, talents, time and expertise, anyone can be a gift. “This gives us a focus to see what

Denise Buckby is challenging New Farm locals to ‘be a gift to the world’. we can do in our own communities, and how we can continue to benefit people in a global capacity,” Denise said. Rotary International’s charity work focuses on six key areas – educational, maternal and child welfare, conservation, clean water, economic prosperity and peace. The organisation’s work is funded by money raised through community clubs such as Rotary New Farm, which helps to stamp out diseases like Polio, provide education for children in remote areas through the Yalari Foundation, and offer life-changing operations for overseas children through ROMAC (Rotary Oceanic Medical Aid for Children). Denise said one of Rotary’s biggest challenges locally was to reinvigorate the Men’s Shed in the area, and to

encourage men to stand shoulder-toshoulder in the spirit of wellness and good health. There is no limit to the Club’s involvement and it is currently looking at programs for youth leadership, driving awareness, and prospering a love of science in girls. The club also is keen to forge relationships with other organisations in the area, hold meetings featuring speakers who have a story to tell and have monthly social meetings at different restaurants. It raised $3000 raised at the recent Teneriffe Festival selling gourmet cheeseburgers, and has Rotary Christmas cakes and puddings available now for corporate gifts. Vicki’s Vital funding helps Hustlers community We stand for inclusion in sport, and are delighted to let you know that Brisbane’s popular Hustlers Rugby Union club are set to receive a leg up with a Community Sport Clubs Grant so they can continue to develop their strategic plan. It’s been a big year for the Hustlers, with their focus not only on the local competition, but also the upcoming Bingham Cup in Nashville Texas; their strategic focus is vitally important. The Hustlers are one of 65 local schools, sporting clubs and organisations to receive investments this year from Council for facility upgrades, maintenance or organisational support. The 2014-15 Community Sport Clubs Grants program will see $2,306,577 invested and we have also sourced funding for other great local sports clubs that we know you support : • Downey Park Netball Association will receive $50,142.35 for the installation of new lighting on 11 netball courts • Brisbane Softball Association at Windsor has been allocated $4,972.50 for lighting replacements, and • Commercial Hockey Club has been approved for $10,000 towards repair of their fields.

Planning is essential in determining long term maintenance requirements and ensuring community safety so that everyone can continue to enjoy the park for years to come.

Susan Davis’s New Farm cottage.

Award-winning garden adds outdoor room to tiny cottage By Roberta Giaconi

FROM the street, the New Farm house of Susan Davis looks like many of the other little cottages in the suburb. That is where the similarities end. When you walk in everything seems to expand as the magnificent garden spectacularly flows around what you soon stop noticing is actually quite a small space. Susan and her dogs are not the only ones who love the space. The Harcourt Street garden, designed by landscape architect Amalie Wright, won the award for Residential Designed Landscapes at the 2015 Australian Institute of Landscape Architects Queensland. The garden area, enclosed by neighbouring houses, is alive with a large variety of structures and textures. There is a concrete circular water tank repurposed as a swimming pool, surrounded by a second circle, filled with grass and plants. On the outside, white large steps allow you to descend to a granite court and a carport which resembles an old stable. All along the main pathway, from the house to the garage, the smell of the edible plants engage the senses. Rosemary, lavender, basil, curry plants are arranged in a lush labyrinth. Susan is thrilled with her garden, and with winning the award. “Before, my garden was a flat rectangle with a carport and a lot of weeds,” she said. “I never used it, I just walked through it to get to the carport and every time I was asking myself ‘what am I going to do’? I was anxious as it would have been a really big job to redesign it, due to the tough New Farm tough and rocks”. Susan finally called Amalie Wright, a friend who works for Landscapology in Spring Hill.

“I told her that I wanted a garden I could use, where the dogs could run around when I was not at home. At the same time, though, I wanted a low-maintenance garden that would allow me to enjoy both privacy and security”. Amalie’s challenge was to accommodate Susan’s needs and, at the same time, work within the existing constraints. The carport and the house were already there, and the neighbouring homes were close. “In my job there is no fixed rule. First of all you have to understand what the client is seeking and how she wants to live and use the space,” Amalie said. “Then you have to respond to the context. What part of Brisbane are we in? What is the soil like and what is the sun like when it hits the side? What do you see when you are in the garden, looking at the house?” With this in mind, Amalie came up with a circular work, which created different layers and “rooms” in the garden and which turned the existing structures into something completely new. “On weekends I now spend on average four hours a day in the garden. I consider it another room of the house and there is now so much to see in different places,” Susan said. Landscape gardening is increasingly popular. Amalie is working on a few projects in New Farm. “A lot of people who engage an architect to design a house would also seek a professional advice for their gardens,” she said. “Additionally, landscape architects are called to design the public realm of the city, the most democratic part, where everyone goes”. After winning the Queensland Landscape Architecture Award, Susan’s garden will soon compete for the national award of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture.

We match up people who have stuff with people who need stuff and it’s all done on-line,” she says. Hawkins says she became interested in contesting Central Ward when she heard people she dealt with in the community complaining they were being ignored. “I believe a lot of residents feel they’re being shut out of the local government process, particularly in relation to development. “People are concerned by the pace of it and wonder if there is an over-arching plan. Have we got enough green space? The residents tell me we don’t. “I’m not anti-development but it has to be matched with community infrastructure and input. Then there are issues of traffic and parking and I’m not sure public transport is keeping up. My approach is residents first,” she says. Hawkins says people point to the issue of the Engine Room redevelopment on the river at Teneriffe as an example of being ignored. “About 370 people objected to that but it was given the approval to go ahead,” she says. Currently living in Bulimba, Hawkins says she is planning to move to New Farm. “We’ve got kids and dogs so we need a house. We’re trying to be residents and we’ve attended more house auctions recently in the New Farm area than I care to think about. “We’ll find a place but at the moment I’m across the river at Bulimba, one ferry stop away from Teneriffe,” she says.

Honours list for prominent surgeon

Technology expert lauded for corporate leadership role A BRISBANE-based professional has been recognised as one of the country’s most influential young business leaders and innovators. Dr Catherine Ball, 35, of Kangaroo Point, is currently Regional Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Lead at URS Australia and was named one of six winners in The Financial Review BOSS Magazine Young Executive of the Year Awards. As a global pioneer in the use of UAS technologies to collect and analyse environmental and engineering data for sectors including oil and gas and mining and infrastructure, Dr Ball’s leadership style, innovative thinking and ability to work efficiently under pressure impressed the judging panel. “I’d describe my leadership style as inclusive, open, honest and approachable and I pride myself on being a social architect, connecting people across diverse business lines and management structures,” Dr Ball said. “I firmly believe it’s the responsibility of business leaders to foster positive relationships in the workplace, particularly in a field

Dr Ball (left) at the awards presentation. which is constantly evolving and involves high-pressure work. “I also think flexibility is essential for any leader, so that differing project, client and staff needs can be addressed quickly and effectively.” URS Australia Managing Director Bob McGowan congratulated Dr Ball on the award and her contribution to URS and the broader business community. “Dr Ball was instrumental in establishing URS’s UAS service capability in Australia and has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities,” Mr McGowan said. “The pioneering work she is doing to help Australian organisations realise the data quality, safety, time and cost benefits of using UAS technologies is truly commendable,” Mr McGowan said. The 2015 Young Executive of the Year Awards attracted 100 entrants, with the winners also including individuals from the retail trade, superannuation, and service and gaming sectors.

RENOWNED Wesley Hospital endocrine surgeon Professor Ian Gough was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday honours list. Professor Gough received a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to medicine as a clinician, to education as an academic, researcher, and author and through medical advisory roles. He is a former President of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and Chair or former Chair of many medical committees and boards. His proud daughter Dr Jenny Gough, who works alongside him in private practice at the Wesley, said her father had been an outstanding surgeon and teacher, and was also “the best father and grandfather.” “Dad loves spending time with the family, especially his two grandchildren,” she said. Jenny said in her father’s early career the family had lived in Michigan in the United States. “We met a lot of world-renowned endocrine surgeons - and then dad went onto become one himself,” she said. Professor Gough, who specialises in complex endocrine surgery, has been a consultant surgeon at the Wesley since 1988. Dr Luis Prado, Director of Medical Services at the Wesley, and Chief Medical Officer for UnitingCare Health, said the honour was richly deserved.

IF YOU are you wondering where to take Dad for Father’s Day, why not head to the Boaters & Beers celebrations at Newstead House on Sunday, 6 September. Newstead House has brought a few friends from the neighbourhood together to create a fun, relaxed and family-friendly day, which will run from 10am to 4pm. Dads and visitors can enjoy a cool brew from Newstead Brewing Company, smooth jazz from JMI, or maybe a brew of a different kind by Merlo coffee. Another treat will be the special performance by Barbershop Quartet Blindside, the 2014 Pan Pacific Youth Barbershop Quartet Champions. Families can bring a picnic, or savour the flavours from some of Brisbane’s most popular food trucks including The Bone Lorry, Juan More Taco and Ruby the Little Red Ice Cream Van. There will be prizes for best dressed and raffles throughout the day, as well as heritage games on the green. The idea for the day came from the popularity of the boater hat as casual

Games on the green of Newstead House. summer headwear for boating or sailing in the late 19th Century and early 20th Century. During the second half of the 19th Century the boater gradually established itself as an item of leisure wear for both men and women, and was mostly worn during informal occasions. As Newstead House is Brisbane’s oldest surviving residence, organisers thought it made perfect sense to bring a bit of style and tradition back to the grounds of beautiful Newstead Park. Nanotechnology and a touch of spice can result in a longer and much healthier life

having fulfilling personal relationships and being in good health. However, a longer life brings some challenges. The 3rd Seniors Sentiment Index assessed older Australians’ views on their financial, health and social well-being, as well as views from the wider Australian society. Up to 43 per cent of non-retired people are ‘not very’ or ‘not at all’ confident in the adequacy of their income, from all sources, for retirement. People are working longer, but it is difficult to retain confidence in long-term retirement plans with the current uncertainty over political policies and concerns about share market cycles That said, people who eat spicy foods nearly every day reduce their risk of death by 14 per cent compared with those who consume spicy foods less than once a week, according to a new study from Harvard University. Regular consumption of spicy food was linked to lowered mortality among both men and women, especially those who did not drink alcohol Further, while up to 55,000 Australians experience

a heart attack or suffer a stroke every year, Australian researchers are a step closer to a safer and more effective treatment. Professor Christoph Hagemeyer, Head of the Vascular Biotechnology Laboratory at Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, said the latest step using nanotechnology offered a revolutionary difference between current treatments for blood clots and what might be possible in the future. The targeted drug, which could be administered by paramedics in emergency without the need for specialised equipment, potentially offers a safer alternative with fewer side effects for people suffering the heart attack or stroke.

All-girl Unicorns start off at a galloping pace By James Breene FROM just six Holy Spirit Primary School students at the start of the year, under six all-girls soccer team the Unicorns has quickly grown into two squads and finished the season with 13 players taking the field. Besides being all-girl, the Unicorns have other special qualities including a social atmosphere where everyone pitches in, and a half-time break featuring fruit platters instead of oranges and some relaxing dog patting. Parent-coaches Daniel Moore and Paul Fairweather joined with other parents to start the Unicorns because their daughters were usually outnumbered by boys in their teams and sometimes felt out of place. Located in New Farm Park where men and boys are most often seen playing under the lights on a Friday night or Saturday and Sunday afternoons, the girls have since been making their patch of the park their own and bending the ball like mini Beckhams. Under six and seven Unicorns have been playing four-a-side in a 10-team competition against other teams from the New Farm United Soccer Club.

The Unicorns. Training runs have been held after school on Thursday afternoons from 4pm to 5pm under the watchful eyes of Daniel who says, “It’s local, the kids are involved, so I’m involved.” The Unicorns have just finished their current competition, but will start again next year with sign-on in February. The club is looking to grow and is encouraging other locals who are parents or guardians of young girls to get involved. Newstead Series weaves world-class art into innovative architecture ARTISTS whose works have been displayed in the iconic Louvre in Paris have been commissioned to weave a multi-storey artwork into the façade of a new luxury residential development in Newstead. Award-winning artists and designers have been commissioned to create art installations and to weave artwork into the structural design of the façade and brickwork of four luxury apartment buildings known as the Newstead Series. The Newstead Series comprises four boutique buildings – The Carlyle, The Donaldson, The Ajax and The Koerstz – which were named after Australia’s famous wool presses. The buildings are brought together by an expansive half an acre of subtropical landscaped gardens and amenities including a 25 metre lap pool and spa, sauna, gymnasium, alfresco dining areas, fire pit, outdoor cinema, recreational lawns and exercise spaces. More than $500,000 has been

spent on local artwork reflecting the historical significance of the area for integration into the project. John Livingstone from JGL Properties said the luxury apartment development was designed as a place for contemporary living, while using art and architecture to weave Newstead’s past into the future. “The market research we’ve done shows that people who choose Newstead as their home are generally young professionals with high disposable incomes, and many are looking for modern welldesigned and spacious residences,” Mr Livingstone said. The foyer spaces will become the backdrop to artwork by renowned local timber artist, Jason Fitzgerald. Jason, who is represented by leading Brisbane gallery Jan Murphy Gallery, has exhibited nationally and won several awards. Jason will use local timbers to create an intricate and layered pattern – much like a threedimensional timber tapestry – which will act as an inviting and

Local artist group, Rinzen, whose works have been exhibited at the Louvre, have created a large-scale abstracted graphic in the glazed sections of the external façade of the development, which references the trusses and framing of the local warehouses. The Rinzen group currently has large scale artwork installations in Tokyo’s Zero Gate and Copenhagen’s Hotel Fox. “The fritted glass handrails on the Evelyn Street façade create a dramatic reference to the Newstead

warehouse framework,” said Mr Livingstone. “The graphic balustrade that wraps the Evelyn Street façade provides a lightweight external skin to the tower form – it champions the role of the site by taking ordinary images from Newstead’s history and applying them at billboard proportions,” said Adrian Clifford from Rinzen. Fashion with passion as Brisbane celebrates a decade of festivals

By Lisa Rutter

FASHION festivals were once only considered something that graced the catwalks of Milan, New York, and Paris, but now Brisbane has well and truly earned its own fashionable badge of honour in 2015 as we celebrate 10 years of MercedesBenz Fashion Festivals (MBFF) in our city. Taking a walk down memory lane we can truly admire how far fashion has come over the years, it was refreshing to see that even though 2015 marks this milestone in Brisbane’s fashion landscape, there were distinct hints of iconic 60s fashion trends, 90s fabrics and even some 70s music thrown in for good measure. Opening night was as impressive as everyone had anticipated, with a star-studded line up of celebrity and high-profile guests. The face of Myer, Jennifer Hawkins, not only walked the runway, but also showcased her swimwear line COZI. Handsome Myer Ambassador Kris Smith also strutted the runway, beautiful local radio host/personality Robin Bailey warmed up the audience for what was to follow and MBFF partner Brisbane City Council, represented

by Lord Mayor Graham Quirk welcomed Brisbane’s fashion elite to enjoy the five days of fashion to follow. Kicking off the night was Myer Spring Summer Fashion with a standout collection from none other than local designers and James Street favourites Edwina Robison and Adrian Norris from Aje. Expect to see a mix of textures and shapes from new season Aje. The use of soft fabrics, sparkles, denim and monochrome is fast becoming iconic to this crowd-pleasing label. Edwina herself describes this collection as “elevated everyday essentials and statement occasional pieces”. Perfectly timed for our spring racing season which is around the corner, this collection will fit the bill for a beautiful, fresh and sensual spring/ summer look. On the second night, the Brisbane Arcade show raised a fashionable bar as far as styling goes and what a relief to see the introduction of seasonal trending fabrics fit for our beautiful city’s climate. Sitting in the front row at the end of the runway was The Honourable Dame Quentin Bryce, who seemed to really enjoy the Pia du Pradal ladylike designs of the silhouetted skirt

10 years of Merceds-Benz Fashion Festivals. suits in beautiful spring summer colours of lilac, grey, and white. And all eyes were on Bora’s eclectic collection of slinky satin dresses, low cut backs, jewelled motifs, overthe-shoulder styles and standout neckpieces. We were then treated with beautiful lightweight fabrics and

bright floral designs from Maiocchi and the incredible Irma J. Smith produced stunning chic designs with pops of colour and unforgettable elegant evening gowns. With so many delectable pieces on offer this spring, it is set to be Brisbane’s most stylish season yet.

Turning customers into clients WHAT do the New Zealand All Blacks, Rupert Murdoch, the Nine Network and the Seven Network have in common, apart from their multi-billion dollar investments in football?

Marketing That Works by Pat McGuire That may be hard to answer on first brush, but boiled down, they know their marketplace, they invest back into it and they are underpinned by one common thread, brand loyalty. This month the big TV networks supported by the Nine Network, News Corporation, the Seven Network and Telstra have announced deals totalling around $5billion to continue their freeto-air broadcasts of Rugby League and Australian Rules football. They guarantee brand loyalty from the broadcasters for the next decade, just as we have seen in the past decade. Sport at the end of the day is reality TV, by another name. We get whipped up into a frenzy by the Nine Network and News Limited over State of Origin year after year. The Origin format is dated, but we still remain loyal to Origin and thereby loyal to broadcaster Channel 9

which claims the highest ratings of any programming in Queensland and New South Wales annually. It is a lot more than 240 minutes of footy. The networks have found a customer – the footy codes – and they have partnered with them in brand loyalty. The networks promote the footy codes and the footy codes promote the networks. And that same lesson applies to some of the smarter Village News businesses, albeit on a smaller scale. Find a customer and keep them loyal and invest back into them; as opposed to simply finding new customers. The IGA Marketplace store on Brunswick Street is a well-oiled machine. Try getting out of the place without one of the friendly staff offering an IGA loyalty card. Ditto for the Malouf Pharmacies in Merthyr Village. They want clients, not just customers; but too few businesses understand the difference. It is the lessons learned from the bigger players that can be applied to the Village News business catchment. Take the Teneriffe Festival this year, held in July. It was the biggest ever, with local businesses keen to get on board to be part of the Village brand. Hypnotherapist’s life story proves the power of positive thinking prevails over ills

I WAS always wary of hypnotists or even hypnotherapists. Scary, I had always thought, to put oneself in the hands of a person who may be able to control one’s mind.

villagepeople by Gary Balkin

So when I heard of the New Farm based hypnotherapist Antoine Matarasso, who had remarkable success in therapy with patients seeking help at his clinic, I ventured along to hear his story. He started his clinic there in James Street, adjoining the old Petersen’s butchery, in 1998. Antoine absolutely amazed me with his positive attitude towards health and habit problems. This is not just because he has spent much of his life helping others improve their attitudes – more that in the past 22 years, he has managed his own serious health issues because of his ability to dig deeply into his mindset. When he was 35, Antoine, even then a world-renowned public speaker on leadership training and a public speaking teacher, was involved in a New York workshop conference when he became ill. He had inflamed lymph nodes, and was diagnosed with having non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, as well as Tuberculosis. It was a big shock to his system but Antoine responded bravely. “I knew the power of positivity,” he said. “I had to line up at a clinic for medical therapy where six other sufferers were queued in seats in the waiting room. They all looked despondent and defeated, to my eyes. “I picked up my chair and moved to

the hallway, alone from the others, and for every medical treatment, whether chemo, radiotherapy or other I received over that period I sat apart in that hallway. “True, it’s all in the mind how you progress. You have to really want to achieve your goal. It must come from the inside. It is not like waving a magic wand.” Antoine was born in the UK, and with his three siblings lived on the expansive family farm near Oxford. He was educated at Princethorpe College near Rugby, and went on to study Theology and Counselling. He spent five years in Israel then, at the age of 25, applied for further study in both the USA and Australia, deciding to go to whichever accepted his application first. He had both his UK and Israeli passports. He arrived in Townsville that year and, after three years, moved to Toowoomba for two years, then to Brisbane. “I came to Australia to study, and I stayed when I really liked Brisbane,” Antoine said. He has lived in our city ever since, at New Farm, not far from his clinic, which boasts two other experienced clinical and medical hypnotherapists, Glen Duffy and Geoff Sweeting. “I could not live anywhere else than New Farm,” Antoine told me. “The community here, the area, is all wonderful.” But that health setback in America had changed Antoine’s life, particularly so after his first sessions of treatment, six weeks of radiotherapy followed by a term of chemotherapy, which made him feel “quite ill”. He re-evaluated his life as a theologian, trainer and public speaker, and studied hypnotherapy under his father-in-law back in Brisbane, carrying his abilities as a counsellor through to

his new vocation as a therapist. When asked the burning question that many of us consider before leaping into hypnotherapy, Antoine reassured me that his patients do not ‘go under’, but instead reach a trance state where they remain aware of the conversations, and indeed recall the process. “When you are driving, you may tend to daydream, especially if your driving route is familiar to you,” Antoine explained. “That is a form of trance, and that trance is similar to the state of mind I want you to reach, and we as therapists are working with the subconscious mind. “There are lots of levels of brain activity, and in the stage just before sleep, you are not out of control. From there, over time, we can help you towards the solution of your problem. I reiterate, you are never out of control in that trance.” Problems people are trying to overcome include gambling, drinking, smoking, insomnia, anxiety, being overweight, any other addictions that the hypnotherapist assists the patient to try to overcome. “Many addictions stem from anxiety. Habitual drinking, smoking and gambling are self-medications, ways of trying to defeat that anxiety,” reasons Antoine. “That self-medication is not the solution. Anxiety can be debilitating. It is a cycle.” Antoine is the author of Trancesolutions, a series of hypnosis CDs and MP3s (audio format for streaming, for example on iTunes). He speaks fluent French, trains other therapists, and following nine years as vice-president of the AHA (Australian Hypnotherapists Association) he has been National president since 2010. He joined the association when there were 60 members, and now there are over 1000 members, all qualified. “We screen our applicants for membership thoroughly,” he insisted. “For years, even now, some selfprofessed therapists put up a shingle and open for business,” he warned, “but most patients are now aware of looking for the AHA qualification.” Antoine is married to Beth, and they have three children, Dylan and Jared are electricians, and Nikki is in Melbourne, working on websites as her business, and is a blogger. Antoine has often re-visited the UK and his sister on the family farm. The property has links to the Cromwell era, and another historical note is that Antoine’s great-grandfather was Bruce Ismay, who was Managing Director and Chairman of White Star Line cruise steamships, including the ill-fated Titanic. Antoine’s earlier life has included helping the homeless and giving hospital and prison visits. Further solutions he helps patients with via hypnotherapy are complete relaxation, deep sleep, creative writing and playing to win at sport.

Antoine Matarasso. Asked how therapy assists in sport, for example golf, he explains: “It’s about motivation and focus. If one loses that, it is because of being nervous or anxious, so they have to put themselves in that (trance) zone. We teach them to translate that feeling into winning.” When asked about the prognosis of his diagnosed illness, Antoine said: “When I was first diagnosed, I was told that as it was a serious form of the illness, I had a 50 per cent chance of being alive after five years. Now, 22 years later, I am managing my un-wellness still. Today, I am due to commence a new course of more chemotherapy, more radiotherapy sessions. I have had more surgery, including the prostate.” While Antoine’s health remains precarious, and his battle continues in his mode of positivity, he also continues to hold workshops, and meetings of his AHA. So after talking at length with Antoine, I was so convinced of his ability and sincerity that I am determined to return as a patient to resolve at least one ‘big’ problem – how to downsize dining portions habitually. In answer to fears of deep hypnosis, Antoine stated: “Stage hypnotists? Only a very few are very good. The type of audience member is nearly always an extrovert. There can be a sleight of hand as to how the hypnotist performs. My friend Martin St James who passed away earlier this year was one hypnotist I considered to be a successful one.” Hypnotherapy can work, as many patients testify. They also know that the motivation first has to come from ‘within’. If motivation is definitive, that big splash of Antoine’s Positivity has to be tapped into. Like the golfer, one must relax, trance-like, and focus. Fore!

Campus design a winner for students

Checklist ticked and ready for flight CAUSE we all have wings. But some of us don’t know why. Every time I listen to these INXS lyrics they impact on me like a bullet between the eyes because the proposition is both inspiring and tragic.

BRISBANE architect Howard Hall is giving vulnerable and disenfranchised teenagers the education and support they need at a new purpose-built school in Spring Hill, and has been personally inspired by the project. Howard Hall of Ceccato Hall in Petrie Terrace recently won a prestigious AIA Brisbane Regional Award for his design of the new campus for Arethusa College Spring Hill before being presented with one of six Queensland AIA State Awards for Educational Architecture. “It’s been so inspiring to be involved in a project which had such great community benefit,” said Howard. “The people of Arethusa College really do fantastic work and it’s been an absolute pleasure to work with their team to achieve results,” he said. “It has been an incredibly motivating experience.” With a career spanning 40 years in the architectural industry, Howard has worked previously with Arethusa Collage on their other campuses and at their main site in Deception Bay. The school works with disenfranchised children who are no longer accepted in the traditional schooling system, to turn their lives around and educate them in a more

The architectural design for the school involved spaces for art, manufacturing skateboards, light hospitality, library, computer lab, counselling rooms and a multi-purpose hall for sporting activities and a theatrical facility. Howard’s team at Ceccato Hall began working on the project in late 2011 with a brief to draw in as much natural light and access to views of the park and city as possible. “We wanted to design the school in a manner that was user friendly and would give inspiration to the kids to motivate them and give them pride in their school,” he said. villageview by Beth J Leach There’s a 100 per cent success rate in achieving your goal if you aim at nothing. I’ve always felt most alive when I’m changing, growing and learning but the first thing you need to do in order to be in this space is believe in yourself. That’s when you learn how to fly. After selling my retail sales business this year I went back to college, changed ‘hats’ but stayed in sales and entered residential real estate on the peninsula. Many friends have asked what process I followed in order to make the decision, so I’ll share it with you. I wrote down my top values and laid out the strings in my bow; my strengths, qualifications and

experience over 25 years. Many roads I had travelled down came back to a radius. I then cross checked my values with this career. The fit was perfect. I’ve been buying and selling properties for two decades; apartments, houses, even a church at one time, giving me an invaluable knowledge. My career as an international stylist, media/ marketing director and writer also helps, as does the blood, sweat and tears of being an award-winning home renovator. But like with most things in life, the most important element of success is the desire of the individual, and this is derived from passion. I’m at that point now where I’m letting our community know what I’m up to but first I first had to ask of myself what I stood for? In today’s fast paced world we view marketing with cynicism. Our radar for generic ‘sales talk’ is sophisticated. It’s from the heart that I must speak as there are many things beyond my control; the weather, the economy, the market. What I can control is my dedication. It’s with my ethics I humbly meet the community. A simple message and call to action. For we all have wings and I’m going to fly.

Teneriffe is now Queensland’s top million-dollar home hotspot LEADING property data portal Onthehouse.com.au says Teneriffe is the new No.1 destination in Queensland for million-dollar houses, stealing the crown from New Farm, which took the top spot in 2014. The highest new entrant in the state’s $1 million+ suburb list is Ransome, with a 38 per cent increase in million-dollar houses from 2014 to 2015 resulting in a sixth-place position. The suburb with the biggest increase in its million-dollar status within the Top 10 was Hawthorne, which documented a 43 per cent increase during the same period. Waterline Crescent in Bulimba retains its No.1 position as Queensland’s most property-rich street, with four other streets from last year’s Top 10 making a second appearance. Five new streets made up the remaining places, including three streets from New Farm alone. “Queensland has seen the biggest increase in properties reaching a $1 million price tag compared to other States,” said Eliza Owen, Market Analyst for Onthehouse.com.au. “While the greater Brisbane area as a whole has not seen strong performance in the last quarter, the

inner suburbs of Brisbane and Gold Coast suburbs present increased value opportunities. “While the Top 10 suburb list offered up similar suburbs from last year, the most important thing to note is the increase in properties reaching the million-dollar milestone. This year, more than half of all suburbs in the Top 10 are worth over $1 million, which wasn’t the case in 2014. “It is also possible that there are many homeowners out there who are currently unaware of their ‘property millionaire’ status, since they live outside of the suburbs typically associated with high value properties. “At Onthehouse.com.au, we provide the ability for people to search for their property and find out what it is worth. Property owners are then able to claim their property for free and improve its estimated value.” To find out if your street has properties valued over $1 million and to view property reports and values for any of Australia’s suburbs, visit http://www. onthehouse.com.au/

RECENTLY, I read an article about a dog that had nipped the ear of a child. The canine, a two-year-old Labrador named Padi, was, as a consequence, taken into custody and classified as a dangerous dog. Under Florida law Padi was scheduled to be euthanized.

The article went on to say that the dog was, most fortunately, granted a reprieve and allowed eventually to return to his grateful owner. Padi, as it turns out, had bitten the child after being cornered and tormented at considerable length. The dog in a desperate attempt to escape his persecutor had delivered a sharp and decisive nip to the four year old boy’s ear. However, Padi isn’t to enjoy complete freedom ever again. villageclassifieds There were many who I would hold accountable in precedence to the dog in this cautionary tale. The babysitter as the only adult present and carer to the child, obviously failed woefully in her duty of care. Although I’m prepared to be moderate in my criticism of her; it must have been her account of the incident that ultimately saved Padi from his executioner. The dog’s owner must take some responsibility; had he been vigilant his dog wouldn’t have been placed in a frightening and stressful position. Padi needed his owner to shield him from the intemperate teasing of the child. However, it’s the child’s parents I feel, that must shoulder the ultimate culpability. Their child’s behaviour towards the dog was reprehensible, hopefully its genesis lay in ignorance rather than some sinister character flaw. Either way, the parents need to provide instruction and guidance for their offspring when dealing, not only with canines but indeed all animals. To show the importance of kindness and most of all, respect toward all living things. I was raised in country Queensland, surrounded by working dogs. If we children received a nip from one of the dogs, it was the child who was held accountable. Our parents had impressed upon us there were boundaries and

limitations to be observed, and if they were ignored it was at your own peril. You soon learned to show respect and employ a degree of intelligence when dealing with canines. Dogs, like humans respond positively to thoughtfulness and magnanimity. Just executing plain good manners as it were. The lovely thing is, dogs not only return the courtesy in spades, and they usually wrap it up with boundless and unquestioning love. It’s my belief, behind almost every dangerous dog there lays an anti-social, angry human being.

MEDLEY Cafe and restaurant at Kangaroo Point is the best thing to have happened to the peninsula in years. Locals are celebrating this new establishment which brings with it fine food for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days in luscious environs with a view that could rival any waterfront venue. Aesthetics, texture and taste unite

THE creators of Gaslight Bistro wanted to offer locals and visitors a casual dining experience where they could share their plates with a menu that could gradually change to accommodate other tastes and new food experiences. The concept of share plates really works well in this situation with the menu broken into Nibbles, Small Plates & Meals, and Sweets. This way, diners get to experience a range of tastes in one sitting. The first to arrive was the pickled and roasted beetroot positioned on a moist crumb of chevre, walnut and rye. Then an incredibly tasty charred broccoli with a parmesan curd, hot smoked salmon and citrus. As if that wasn’t enough, then we were served pork collar with roasted corn and pardon peppers, in brown butter and hazelnuts. Take the classic sophistication of an old Queenslander and toss it together with an exquisite selection of tastes and you have an intimate dining winning combination. Bernard Fanning to headline Youngcare benefit concert SINGER-songwriter Bernard Fanning will be joined by Melbourne’s #1 Dads, Mosman Alder and other guest artists in a special live concert to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Youngcare on 10 October at Brisbane’s City Hall. Fanning said he was honoured to be invited to curate the fourth Youngcare Benefit Concert; the events have raised more than $650,000 for young Aussies with high care needs. “The first concert that we did at City Hall in 2006 holds some incredible memories for me,” Fanning said. “It was an atmosphere like no other I have experienced as a performer. I can’t wait to be part of it again. It’s an iconic venue that rarely hosts concerts such as these. “I take great pleasure in welcoming Mosman Alder and #1 Dads headed by the multi-talented Tom Iansek and his host of merry guests, as well as my own band and returning funny man Julian Morrow. “As always, we also have a special surprise guest. Come along and be part of it, help a great cause and be entertained up to the eyeballs for your trouble.” “We are delighted to find ourselves in a position to contribute as a band to such a worthy cause. And what a privilege to be sharing the stage with artists of such a high calibre! We feel truly humbled to be part of the whole event,” Mosman Alder said. Since 2005, Youngcare has worked to provide purpose-built accommodation, grants, research and a support phone line for thousands of young Australians living in aged care and hundreds of thousands more being cared for at home by loved ones. CEO Samantha Kennerley said Youngcare was

extremely grateful for Fanning’s long-time support. “Bernard is a tireless champion for young people with high care needs and Youngcare,” Mrs Kennerley said. “We are enormously thankful to all the musicians who give their time and talent. “Every dollar raised by this concert helps give more young people with high care needs voice, choice Bernard Fanning. and control over their own lives. “Since that first concert in 2006, Youngcare has built homes for dozens of young Aussies who needed to get out of residential aged care and provided more than $2.2 million to over 400 young people through our grants programs. “We’ve set the standard for a new model-of-care with our recently opened share house for four young people in Brisbane, and we’re about to kick off our first development in Sydney – apartments for eight young people at Auburn. “There have been some incredible advances in care and accommodation but there is still plenty of work to do.”

Gallipoli anniversary project inspires works for inaugural exhibition at Mitchell Fine Art PAINTINGS by celebrated Australian artist and writer Steve Lopes inspired by a visit to Gallipoli for the 100th anniversary of the ANZACS World War I campaign are featured at the inaugural exhibition at Mitchell Fine Art in New Farm.

VillageArts by Kerry Gillett The Gallipoli works by Lopes, on exhibition until 19 September, resulted from the ‘Your Friend the Enemy’ project which saw he and other artists, filmmakers, and historians journey to Istanbul and the Gallipoli Peninsula in May and June last year. Mitchell Fine Art Director Mike Mitchell said Lopes used the landscape as a vehicle to investigate the human experience of Australians at war, and wanted to be involved with the project because his great uncle, Albert Champion, fought at Gallipoli.

“His artwork brings together the historical with the contemporary. He worked en plein air (outdoors) with no easel by ‘plonking’ himself down on the ground,” Mike said. “He painted using a small fisherman’s tackle box of colours, which he added Liquin so the artwork would dry more quickly. Each study took 40 to 60 minutes to complete. “He used these studies of historic battlegrounds, old trenches and less scenic areas as references for largescale studio works. “When Lopes was painting Russells Top, a scene of many violent battles, he was exploring painting techniques to understand the feel of the land, not the accurate topography. “For him it was so hard to paint, the folds, crevices, and flat tops because they were loaded with meaning. Though this landscape is visually beautiful, it is very spiritual. It is a sacred land for Australians and New Zealanders. “Though Lopes painted his studies en plein air, like other Impressionists, his work is definitely expressionist where his visual depiction of the

IS IT PET FRIENDLY? When I grew up my two four legged best friends were Riley & Rusty. Riley was a collie (picture lassie) my parents found him wandering the streets, they investigated their way back to his owners and discovered that Riley was a ‘runner’ & his owners circumstances meant we could keep him. After years of adventures with my brother and I, Riley pulled the same stunt and one day just up & vanished. We searched, letter dropped and cried...but no Riley. A few years passed and we were ready for another dog. We went to the RSPCA at Yeronga and met Rusty. He was half Labrador, half German Shepard. Rusty was a scally-wag! I recall coming home from school one day to see him chewing on an entire leg of ham that he had pinched from one of our neighbours! Dad was furious!! Unfortunately Rusty was a bit of a runner too and he was hit by a car... More tears!

Most people’s concerns with pets in units are around noise and enough space for the pet. The irony about noise is many New Farm complexes are pet friendly and when you walk through them you rarely hear anything and when you do, it’s certainly nothing like the noise you hear from pets barking at pedestrians through front fences of local houses. And with regard to space, well most owners who want to live in an apartment with their pet dearly love spending time with them. They walk them along the riverwalk, run them through the park and socialise at the dog parks. They make exercise part of their life, not the ‘back yards’ job.

In a lease a tenant is responsible for repairing any damage they cause, so whether that’s the human tenant or the puppy tenant any damage must be fixed.

Pets and people have special relationships. Today, I wouldn’t call myself a dog person. We have no pets and don’t have any short term plans to get them. But when I had them, they were my best friends and I loved them. This love and those relationships have played a role in a number of recent QCAT (think small claims court) decisions. Many owners or tenants that have pets are moving into apartment complexes and being told ‘This building is not pet friendly’. The body corporates have their reasons however when investigated those reasons have been deemed invalid. It is now quite common knowledge in community title circles that they know the restriction of pets in their apartments is their rule, however if challenged is likely to be overturned.

1

We have seen that rental properties that allow pets get a slightly higher rent and that is also true for sales. It simply comes down to supply and demand. Parties with and without pets can compete for a ‘pet friendly’ property & only parties without can compete from a property that is not. Time, and one by one court cases, will slowly see more buildings forced to change their policy. Pets are playing a major role in people’s financial decisions, they are coming anyway, it’s time to avoid unnecessary costs and open the doggy doors to them.
