BY DANIEL EDU This week at camp a musical is going on called “Follow U.” I interviewed people to tell me their opinion about things, facts and about the play itself. One of the people I talked to is Isabel, she plays Pandora in the musical. She said she doesn’t have a lot of time to learn the lines, so it’s pretty hard but it could have been worse. “Others actors are very good,” she said. “If it’s not perfect it won’t look real.” I also talked to the Director, Mejee, he said his job is pretty fun, but also hard. It can be stressful, but he likes it.
“If someone messes up, they’ll just go with the flow and do improv,” Mejee said. “I think the play is a bit cheesy, but it’s a kid’s play and so it could be fun.” Last, but not least I talked to Jordan and Josh who are set designers. They said designing the set takes a lot of team work to hold the ladder, hold the paper and rubbing it to get the air bubbles out. They said it’s kind of hard getting everything together in one week. I also talked to other actors and people and they said that their job is pretty hard and they hope that they get it all right on Saturday.
Changes to the Crags campfire BY JADEN HARRISON At Camp Mt. Crags, the campfire pit is under construction. During the Musical Theatre Arts Camp, we had campfire on the basketball court using a box with paper flames. Program Director Solvej said the campfire used to be high but they are shortening it so the fire will be on the ground. It will be done next week.
CAMP CROSSES ON THE MOUNTAIN BY BRISEIDA GOMEZ AND MICHELLE POZO At our camp there are three large crosses. The big cross on Brents Mountain was first put there in 1939. There are different opinions on why the cross was built. Program Staff member Shalini said the cross was built so Jesus could watch over us, and show us how
much he loves us. Divisional Youth Secretary Lt. Sergio Garcia said that Camp Crags is a Christian camp so the cross is a very important part of this camp. Program Director Solvej said that in 2011 some people vandalized the cross. With a group of people, she helped carry a new cross to the top of the mountain.
They said they’re going to have a celebration for the campfire pit. The construction crew is here this week working on the campfire so they did it for us to have a nice campfire. “We are completing it in phases. The firepit will be ready to use Friday, and then they’ll be working on a steel roof,” said Marie, an inspector with the construction company.
•The first “big cross” was placed atop Brents Mountain in 1939. It was vandalized and replaced in 1990, and again in 2011. •The first Salvation Army camp here began June 26, 1939, and cost $1 PER DAY. •The girls’ cabins at Camp Mt. Crags are named after Salvation Army composers. •Camp Director Marty Brown holds the record time (18 MINUTES, 12 SECONDS) for making it to the big cross. •The swimming pool at Camp Mt. Crags used to be located outside of the dining hall. •2,365 kids attended camp here in 2012.

Steal off skit in review
Q&A with ‘Follow U’
BY MARK ANDERSON Hello to all of the readers. This article is a review of the steal off skit and how some of the counselors reacted to it. It was a competition to steal stuff from the next person. Whoever stole the best stuff moved on to the next tournament. Daniel won in the end. First we have Program Director Steve. I asked him, “What did he think about the skit?” He said, “I like how they involved the audience with the skit instead of just the main cast.” He also thought it was funny. The second person I interviewed is Matthew, a counselor and a member of the skit. He enjoyed the skit and said his favorite part was when Daniel pulled the boxers out of Robert’s pants and he was super nervous. Even when he was introducing himself he couldn’t even talk because he was nervous. He couldn’t tell us if they already had the items. He said that Robert picked the skit and he joined it because they needed people. He wanted to be in the spot.

Set Designers Jordan and Josh Q: Is it easy or hard to put a musical together? A: “It’s pretty hard because there’s a lot of stuff to do. Some things are easy and some are difficult.” Q: Do you like putting the musical together? A: “Yes.” Director Mejee Q: Do you enjoy directing the musical? A: “Yes, because it’s fun and stressful, but I like the stress.”
Q: Why do you like it? A: “I like performing.” Q: How hard is it? A: “Takes a lot of organization and patience.” Q: What’s the hardest thing to do when directing a musical play? A: “Adapting the script and getting kids to memorize the script.” Q: Do you get nervous? A: “Yes because if I don’t get nervous I have the feeling that something bad is going to happen, so if I get nervous I feel everything will go well.” Actress Isabel (“Pandora” in “Follow U”) Q: Do you get nervous? A: “Personally no but other’s do.” Q: Why do you like it? A: “I like performing.”
Specialized learning at Musical Theatre Camp
This week at Mt. Crags, campers had so many options of classes to choose. You got to choose at least four classes. For example, I chose hair and make up, journalism, and set design. For your classes you would get two classes out of what you chose and chorus, but if you’re acting that would be your only class. I am in chorus, journalism, and hair and makeup. I enjoy going to these classes, and I asked some campers what they thought about their classes. Julian’s class is ribbons. He says that he has fun during this class. What they’re doing in ribbons is that you dance with ribbons basically. The teacher who teaches ribbons is Suzanne. He says that Suzanne is a good teacher. Javenonte is in stomp. For those of you who don’t know about stomp, stomp is basically making music with every day items, such as chairs, spatulas, you name it. The teacher is Gavin. Javenonte who has experience of this class. He’s been doing stomp since he was 6 and kept doing stomp ever since. He likes to do stomp
because he can express his feelings about God in an interesting way. Grace is in the class of acting for all three sessions. The teacher of that class is Mejee Lutcher. She says that Mejee is a great actor and that he is great person for the job. I also asked some of the staff members what they think of the classes. Jacqui is the class organizer, but she teaches chorus with another leader, Annalise. Jacqui says that she likes to teach chorus because she likes to teach kids to worship Jesus by singing God’s word. Christin is the journalism class leader. She likes journalism because she can teach kids journalism and have something in common with them. She also likes to teach them journalism because the kids can learn a new skill and have a challenge to finish an article at the end of the week. Us kids in her class think that she’s awesome! I had a lot of fun in this class. And other people in the class love her as well. I hope that you enjoyed reading this article.

BY JUAN FLORES Each camper has free time because we have to have some time to ourselves and we get to have time without the counselors not telling us where we’re going. There are different kinds of things to do like hiking, pool, basketball, and the canteen. If you want to go to the pool we have to go to our cabin and change one by one and there are people that take care of the cabin. Also we have soccer games with Joseph, who has a British accent. The thing that people do the most is go to the pool because it is really cold. We have it everyday until camp ends. The canteen is a place that you have to give money to your counselor and he will put in the
canteen so you could buy stuff for the week. Hiking you have to get ready for it because you might fall or get to sweaty and have to wear a short sleeved shirt because it is really hot. There is a lot of things to do in free time like the jumper sometimes and the water slide. Free time is really fun and people are happy that we have it. Everyone is thankful for the camp giving us free time. Counselors have free time but it’s not like ours we get to have fun and they have to do things that we don’t. We go to some places like the fire trail, Gilmore cross, small cross and the big cross. My favorite thing to do in free time is going to the pool because sometimes it is really cold. That is my free time experience.

Campers all over free time love going swimming and going hiking and the most favorite thing they like of all is going to the canteen. They like going to the canteen so that they can get what ever they want like skittles chips water and juice. Some people go to the jumpers sometime, but the thing I like about camp is when they have fun.
I always buy my favorite snack at the canteen—vanilla ice-cream in a cone—in the middle of freetime. I like it because it’s sweet and creamy. I buy it every day for $1 after I swim in the pool.
BY KEVIN ARCIGA Hello my name is Kevin my favorite free time activities are basketball, swimming and soccer. I like to play basketball because it’s fun. I also like to play basketball because I get to run a lot. I like to swim because I can do front flips. I also like to swim because it’s fun. I like to play soccer because I get to make goals. I also like to play soccer because I always win. I also like to go to the small cross and the canteen. I like going to the small cross because it’s fun. I also like going to the canteen because I get a lot of candy, like skittles and soda. I like free time because I can go anywhere I want.

HIKING TO THE CROSS BY CHRISTIAN SILVA AND SAMUEL ARCIGA A lot of people love hiking, like most of the campers at Mt. Crags. One of the well-liked hikes is the small cross. People like that hike because it is not too hard and because it is really exciting. The first time I tried hiking to the small cross I was a bit scared. Once I got use to it I was not scared anymore. Many campers tried the small hike, but counselors went to the big cross, which is really big. The small cross is really fun and many campers tried it with their counselors because hiking is a very fun sport to try.

Did you know camp has a pond?
BY CHLOE JAIMESON This week I decided to interview Cindy. She has been working at Camp Mt. Crags for only one year. She chose to be a counselor to teach kids more about God and learn from the experience. Her favorite thing about being a counselor is she gets to work with kids and minister to them. Cindy’s favorite hobby is to spend time with her family. At camp her favorite free-time activity is going to the craft house or playing volleyball. Her fellow counselor, Daniel, said that she is quiet and nice, but if you make her mad she can be really mean. And Steve, the program director, said she is also very nice and quiet and does a very good job with her kids. I chose Cindy because she is a very good counselor and my counselor. She is strict at times, but also fun. I also thought that she would be interesting to interview and write about.
The lifeguard life BY SOPHIA ROMERO Nick and Zack are twin lifeguards here at Camp Mt. Crags. They watch kids during free-time to make sure nothing happens to them. It seems boring, but it’s fun for them. You can really trust them and they know their stuff. They have a big responsibility. They’re really good at dodge ball and basketball. Zack’s favorite candy is Lifesavers. And when I asked him what he does after camp, he said he saves lives. Nick is the older twin, the more serious brother. They both know a lot about the pool because if a person drowns they can jump in and grab them. They take their job very seriously, but they also have fun. They go to the Pasadena Tabernacle Corps. A lot of people say they’re really cool guys and Matt said, “They’re pretty swell dudes.” My counselor said they’re so cool you can’t tell them apart. I’m glad they’re here because I think they’re the right people to save lives.
BY DAMARI BELL The pond was built by Camp Director Marty Brown six years ago. It is by the park. The way that it is built looks nice with rocks around it. In front of it is a chair and a flag. In front there is running water. It makes the park look nice. Without the pond the park would look boring and people might not want to play there!
MEET JOSEPH, CAMP COUNSELOR
BY RODRIGO GARZA Joseph came to this camp on June 17, 2013. Joseph likes playing soccer and basketball. The last thing he likes is rock climbing. Joseph goes for Liverpool in soccer. Joseph also likes going swimming.
