Gordon Winch

The magnificent Powerful Owl - Australia’s largest owl - is now a threatened species. This means their numbers are declining and they could become extinct. Through this story about Apollo, an imaginary Powerful Owl, you will learn many things about this majestic Australian bird.

APOLLO THE POWERFUL OWL

Apollo the Powerful Owl decides to change his diet, but when he does his tummy growls and grumbles and rumbles and tumbles, and he feels sick and weak. Wilfred a wise old owl gives him some sensible advice. When Apollo takes the advice, something wonderful happens.

BURP! Apollo the Powerful Owl finished his supper and thought, ‘I must change my diet. All I do is eat … eat … eat nothing but meat … meat … meat for every meal.’

‘I frighten all the other creatures of the forest with my sharp beak and powerful claws: every possum, every sugar glider, flying fox, baby rabbit, magpie and cockatoo. It’s not surprising no one likes me and I’m such a lonely bird.’

‘Other animals and birds don’t eat like me. The honeyeaters sip nectar from the flowers, the parrots crunch seeds and nuts and the kangaroos nibble grasses. Even the farmer’s old cow makes do with bundles of hay. I’m going to change my ways.’
