Ramadan is a month of reflection and self-control for muslims. Based on the phases of the moon, Ramadan is always observed during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. This year, Ramadan will begin on April 2 and will end on May 2. Eid al-Fitr, a three-day festival that is one of Islam's major holidays, commemorates the completion of Ramadan.The first revelations of the Quran, the holy book of Muslims, were given to Muhammad (the prophet) during this month.

Fasting is regarded as a method to cleanse the soul and cultivate compassion for those who are hungry and less fortunate than oneself. It is one of Islam's five pillars. Every day throughout the month of Ramadan, muslims fast from dawn until dark. They are forbidden from harming themselves or others by eating, drinking, smoking, having sexual activities, or acting in a cruel or impure manner.
