Sculpture donated to Newham

Huang Jian and Sir Robin

A magnificent sculpture has been gifted to the borough by renowned Chinese sculptress Huang Jian. The China-UK Friendship Polo Match was unveiled at a special ceremony attended by Mayor Sir Robin Wales and councillors. The Polo Match sculpture is based on two Chinese ancient polo fans and two British modern polo lovers who travel through time and gather in the Olympic Park for a polo game. Sir Robin said: “The Royal Docks is a fitting setting for this magnificent sculpture, which we are delighted to welcome.” Speaking through a translator, Huang said: “My sculpture has found a fitting home. The backdrop of the docks and London City Airport is amazing. I am very happy.”

Committed to ending violence against women The Newham One Stop Shop, a partnership initiative that supports victims of domestic Cllrs Unmesh Desai and Terence Paul join and sexual violence, welcomed the National White Ribbon Relay baton to Stratford. Sally Jackson from Standing Together Councillor Unmesh Desai, executive member for crime and anti-social behaviour, joined organisations including the police, Rape Crisis, Standing Together and AANCHAL Women’s Aid, to raise awareness of the White Ribbon campaign. The global initiative aims to make men, in particular, take responsibility for reducing the level of violence against women during major sporting events. Cllr Desai said: “The one stop shop provides free and confidential advice for anyone experiencing domestic or sexual violence. If you are victim of abuse and don’t know who to turn to, our team of trained staff can support you with one-toone counselling or find you a refuge space somewhere safe from harm.” The Newham One Stop Shop is located at Stratford Advice Arcade, 107-109 The Grove, E15, and is open weekdays from 10am-6pm and on Saturdays from 10am-1pm until 13 September. Proposed changes to advice services Residents’ views are being sought on proposed changes to information, advice and guidance on debt, housing and benefits. Feedback on the proposals is being collated via an online questionnaire but general comments are also welcome. You can answer as few or as many questions as you wish. Residents and anyone who might be affected by the changes are welcome to take part in the consultation. To take part and have your say visit www.newham.gov. uk/adviceconsultation or request a paper version of the questionnaire at any Local Service Centre or library. The consultation closes on 25 October.

Another great idea Newham’s series of free lectures continues with Bernard HoganHowe, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. The commissioner will be talking about the future of policing in London, as part of the ongoing Ideas Olympiad. The short lecture, Policing in the World’s Greatest City, takes place on Tuesday 14 August, 7pm-8pm, at Stratford Picturehouse. This event will include a substantial Q&A session with the audience. Midsummer bounce Newham LIVE is on now at Stratford and Central parks, where thousands of people have been enjoying all the action from the Games on huge screens. Come and enjoy our live sites Thousands of residents poured into our live sites to watch the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games and the first week of sporting activity on giant screens. The screens in Stratford Park and Central Park, East Ham, are proving fantastically popular with families who are enjoying picnics in the park while watching the events. We’ve even had athletes and their families come and soak up the amazing atmosphere. When London was first bidding for the Games, I told the International Olympic Committee that for every national team that competes in the Olympics, there is a community right here to support them. That certainly seemed true in Stratford Park where every team in the athletes’ parade got a cheer. This weekend the live sites will have free arts, music, children’s entertainment and sports activities. Drop in, relax and enjoy them as well as the big screens.

Welcoming Her Majesty The Queen

I welcomed The Queen to Newham for the second time in two days when she visited London City Airport in Silvertown. The previous evening millions around the world had seen ‘her’ jump from a helicopter with 007 James Bond into the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games in Stratford. I told her how impressed I was by her epic feat at the Olympic

Stadium the night before and she was amused by that. The Queen came to the airport to unveil a plaque marking the 25th anniversary of its opening, which she had performed in 1987. The airport is one of our largest employers and a real driver of regeneration in the Royal Docks. It has cemented Newham’s position as a world class destination for business and leisure.

Here’s how you’ve been getting the party started, with a little help from the council. Going Wild in Plaistow From derelict to delightful, the Urban Wilderness community garden on First Avenue, Plaistow, officially opened its doors with a Let’s Get the Party Started community celebration. More than 150 residents enjoyed an activitypacked day with food growing workshops, children’s activities and a food festival. In just six months, the former dumping ground has been transformed into a green haven for residents and wildlife with raised beds for growing vegetables and a pond. There are also plans to develop a children’s play area.

Flying the Flag for Forest Gate If you’ve recently travelled down Romford Road, E7, you can’t help but adore the bespoke bunting that is beautifying the area. For the past three months, residents have been working hard designing flags to represent the 204 countries participating in the Olympics. This mammoth undertaking came about after residents asked councillors to come up with a project to inspire the community to get involved in the Games. The result involved 20 voluntary groups, residents and a number of schools producing enough Olympic bunting to line 1km of the torch relay route.

Public Notice London Borough of Newham DESIGNATION OF AN AREA FOR ADDITIONAL LICENSING Section 56, Housing Act 2004 The London Borough of Newham (“Council”) in exercise of its powers under section 56 of the Housing Act 2004 (“the Act”) has on 21st June 2012 designated an area in its district, as delineated in red on Map 1 (b), as subject to Additional Licensing. Making the Games The Games may be dominated by athletes but dozens of Newham’s young people are also at the forefront of the action. Sam Bezzina, Sam Cox, Khaliq Miah, Tommy Beaney and Jack Lewis are just a handful of Young Games Makers that have been given the opportunity of a lifetime. Throughout the Games, the volunteering programme for 16 to 18-year-olds will see young people from schools, colleges and sports organisations across the borough complete a number of roles. Among these are a group from West Ham Amateur Boxing Club (ABC) who are escorting the world’s finest boxers into the ring at the ExCeL arena and carrying their national flags. West Ham ABC’s club coach Mickey Driscoll explained: “We didn’t necessarily choose the best boxers we chose the best

boys for the role. It was a tough decision. We have approximately 100 members so we had to choose the ones that would represent us in the greatest possible way.”

“ This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity” Tommy Beaney, 17, found out about Young Games Makers when he spotted a poster on the club’s notice board. He said: “When I found out I was chosen to take part I was so happy. This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity.” Tommy and Sam Bezzina, who have been boxing for 11 years, also had the chance to see what it feels like to

compete in an Olympic venue when they took to the ring for a bout of sparring to test the Olympic scoring system. Club secretary, Inspiring People Reward winner and Olympic Torchbearer, Lianne Jameson, said: “Our boys are ideal for the job. They know what it feels like to be in that ring and are passionate about boxing. This will be a learning experience as well as an inspirational one.”

Headlining our opening night will be Julian Joseph’s All Star Big Band. Pianist Julian leads a phenomenal 20-piece band comprising of Britain’s best jazz talent including Pete King, Mark Mondesir and Jean Toussaint. Supporting Julian with spine-tingling vocals will be Cleveland Watkiss,, Soweto Kinch and the amazing Carleen Anderson. Join the former lead singer/songwriter for the Young Disciples, Brand New Heavies and Incognito on an emotional journey where you will feel the blues and float away on high notes. FRIDAY 24 AUGUST – EASTERN BEATS Bhangra legends join the new generation of Asian musicians for our much anticipated Eastern Beats evening. Alaap – Channi Singh, founder and lead singer of Alaap, is known worldwide as the Godfather of British bhangra. The award-winning Alaap have been performing their hits for 35 years playing to packed audiences all over the world. Mona Singh – daughter of Channi Singh, the princess of Punjabi pop has followed in her father’s footsteps with UK and international success. Mona also had a top 20 hit with Basement Jaxx and Dizzie Rascal. H-Dhami – the heart throb of the bhangra scene is back by popular demand. H has performed with top musicians including Raghav and Mumzy. Kiran Dhanoa – the young singing sensation fuses bhangra, Bollywood and RnB to bring a fresh sound to Asian music. Sapnay School of Dance – the first ever UK Bollywood Dance champions and the semi finalists of Got to Dance series 3 on Sky 1 will be presenting a magical dream of modern Bollywood fusion. Avina Shah – a performer since the age of three, Avina writes her own songs and has performed in both English and Hindi.

D-Sarb – at only 17-years-old, D-Sarb is the latest young talent on the block. He trained under Ustad Nafees Irfan where he groomed his vocal, tabla and harmonium skills. Shide Boss – the British singer/songwriter gained recognition after winning Channel 4’s talent quest Hollyoaks Unsigned Music Show. Now signed to Sony Records, his music fuses together pop, RnB and Asian beats. Navin Kundra – a talented singer, songwriter and musician whose voice captures the essence of traditional Asian music whilst giving it a contemporary feel. Raxstar – with more than ten years off songwriting experience Raxstar broke through into the Asian music scene in 2005 with Keep it Undercover.
