Summer has never been better in Newham with the promise of a wealth of fun opportunities on offer from the council. Our summer events programme offers activities and events for all the family, most of which are completely free. Why not take part in our Summer Reading Challenge at your local library or play a sport in your local park? Thousands of people come along to Newham Council’s summer events every year to enjoy free entertainment, top musicians, local talent, fireworks and much more. Your summer gets under way with a weekend of family fun at the Mayor’s Newham Show on 8-9 July, which includes the popular Mayor’s Newham Carnival. The soundtrack to your summer continues to delight and entertain with our annual four-day music extravaganza Under the Stars from 17-20 August. If you want to carry on with your learning over the summer or develop a new skill, take a look at the range of activities taking place within Newham’s Community Neighbourhoods. You can also visit the Discover Children’s Arts Centre in Stratford, which has once again teamed up with us to offer free entry to Newham’s youngest residents. Don’t forget to book your activity as soon possible to avoid disappointment because places are booked on a first come, first served basis. If you’re aged 14–18, get involved in our elections for the Young Mayor and the Youth Council. With opportunities including the Young Mayor Festival on Saturday 19 August, this is your chance to showcase the talent of Newham’s young people. We think there’s nowhere in the country like Newham when it comes to opportunities that the council gives you to get out and about, get active, make friends and have fun. Make sure you don’t miss out this summer on everything Newham has to offer.

SCHOOL SSAGE ME Summer School 2017- a new approach Newham’s Summer School has been running successfully for 20 years and can have a huge impact on the children and young people who attend. This summer, Newham schools through the Education Guarantee have agreed to fund a trial of a smaller more targeted programme focused on vulnerable children. The summer school will be free but targeted and not generally available to every pupil. The Summer School courses have always been inclusive, students were encouraged to apply whatever their needs and appropriate support was put in place to make the provision accessible. However, for many reasons more vulnerable pupils have not always managed to gain places on courses due to the rapid response to the ‘first come first served’ basis they have been offered. A smaller more targeted offer gives us the opportunity for something different.
Pupils who are selected will be asked to apply online from a range of 20 courses including; drama, dance, arts, hair and beauty, car mechanics, on the farm, world cooking, outdoor adventures, film making, computer game making, mentoring and fun physical activities.
Following consultation with schools, we are aiming to involve 300 pupils from school years 5, 6, 7 and 8 to cover the transition years from primary to secondary. All schools have been invited to participate but places are only being given to the first 30 schools who apply.
An evaluation will be carried out to determine the Summer School’s effectiveness and impact on specific groups of vulnerable children. The results of the evaluation will be used to inform the development of the Summer School offer for future years.
Each participating school is identifying 10 pupils who may be vulnerable a range of reasons including special educational needs and disability, children who are looked after (in care), those who have caring responsibilities, those who speak English as a second language.
The new system for 2017 means that you cannot call to book a summer school place unless you have received an invitation from your school. Although you may be disappointed that your child can not apply this year there are many free courses offered by other partners featured in this brochure.

Vaccines save lives. Is your child fully protected?
Vaccination is a safe and effective way of protecting children against serious infectious diseases like measles, mumps, rubella, meningitis, polio, flu and whooping cough.
Vaccinations for a whole range of illnesses are offered free of charge to all children living in the UK by the NHS. Children should receive vaccines at the following ages: • Eight weeks • 12 weeks • 16 weeks • Between 12 and 13 months • Yearly between the age of two and six years old
For a list of all vaccines – and when to have them – visit www.nhs.uk/vaccinations or make an appointment to discuss it with your GP. It is never too late to have your child vaccinated. If your child missed any of their vaccinations as a baby or toddler, pre-school is a good time to ask your GP surgery about catch-up doses. If you are not registered with a GP visit www.nhs.uk to find your nearest practice.
Want a career that fits in with family life? Enjoy looking after children? Have a spare room?
With a weekly allowance of up to ÂŁ450 per child, fostering could be the answer.
