IN BRIEF // Victoria Dock Road – closure update The closure of Victoria Dock Road E16, between Munday Road and Freemasons Road has been extended until the autumn because of a number of different works taking place on the Crossrail project. The work had originally been planned to be completed in June. It requires the road to be excavated and allow for cranes to be positioned on the road, which all prevent normal traffic flow. For more information call the Crossrail Helpdesk (24hr) on 0345 602 3813. GLA approves new business district The £1.7billion Asian Business Park has been given the seal of approval by the Greater London Authority. Last year Newham Council’s Strategic Development Committee resolved to grant planning permission for the business district beside Royal Albert Dock, which will be a hub for Asian businesses in Europe. The 437,000 square metre development will comprise mainly of offices but will also include residential, retail and public spaces. The application has now been referred to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government for consideration. Have your say on Upton Centre A consultation on the future of the Upton Centre has begun, which asks residents for views on options for the centre’s refurbishment after it closed unexpectedly last year because of the boiler no longer being compliant. An online questionnaire seeks views on refurbishment of the centre in Claude Road as well as potentially closing the site and redeveloping it. Printed copies of the questionnaire are available at Plaistow Library, Green Street Library, Jeyes Community Centre and Katherine Road Community Centre. The consultation closes on Tuesday 26 May. Results will be presented to the Mayor and councillors at June’s Cabinet meeting. For information visit www.newham.gov.uk/consultations

Victorian Dockyard springs into life An historic dockyard in Canning Town has been transformed into a beautiful riverside walk packed with flowers. On 10 April the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) joined volunteers at the Newham Council-supported project in Cody Dock to unveil the newly Volunteers at Cody Dock created space. Volunteers from across Newham were joined by RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold medal-winning garden designers and RHS ambassadors Chris Beardshaw, Adam Frost, and TV’s Nick Knowles, to help bring a flourish of vivid colour to the dock as part of the RHS Greener Streets: Better Lives campaign. Simon Myers, who leads the Gasworks Dock Partnership, said: “Newham boasts more waterways than Venice. Since we began the project the site has gone from being a dumping ground for industrial waste to a green, living haven for kingfishers, cormorants, reed warblers, teal and redshanks. It is now about to become a tranquil riverside destination for thousands of visitors.” Visit www.gasworksdock.org.uk for details.
Ramshackle camp is removed A bunker-like shelter made out of The encampment in East Ham mud, rocks and fence panels has been cleared from a site beside the A406. The encampment was tackled under Operation Alabama, Newham Council’s initiative with police, immigration officers and charity Thames Reach, to tackle homelessness. In March a Romanian national who had previously been issued with a warning notice by the immigration service, was arrested at the site. To prevent someone else moving in Newham Council cleared the site. It took three hours to remove a makeshift house, which had been carved in the mud and shored by large rocks near a slip road of the dual carriageway. This is the fifth such shelter removed by Newham Council from around the borough recently. To report homeless encampments call 020 8430 2000 or complete the online reporting form at www.newham.gov.uk/asb
Record number offered choice of primary school Latest figures released as part of National Offer Day revealed Newham Council as amongst the best in London for offering pupils places at their first choice primary school from September. Newham was second in the Capital with 88 per cent offered their first choice – well above the London average of 81 per cent. Some 97 per cent of Newham pupils were offered a place at one of their top three primaries compared to 93 per cent of London pupils. This year Newham received 4,809 applications. To meet the demand for primary school places, the council has invested in a multi-million pound expansion programme to create an additional 10,000 school places. This is being achieved by expanding existing schools or building new schools.
Royal visit to first urban farm The Princess Royal and Mayor Sir Robin Wales visited GrowUp Box, London’s first urban farm in a shipping container. The urban farm at Stratford’s Roof East – an urban pocket park on top of Stratford multi-storey car – is managed by Urban Space Management and Groundwork London. The GrowUp Box uses aquaculture (farming fish) and hydroponic technology (growing plants in a nutrient solution without soil) to produce sustainable salads and fish each year. The first harvests are predicted for September. Newham Council has already granted planning permission for GrowUp Urban Farms to build the farming system on a wider scale in an industrial warehouse in Beckton. It is hoped more than 20,000kg of salad and herbs and 4,000kg of fish will be produced every year and sold to local restaurants.

Glory, performed by Laura with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Paul Bateman, and tenor John Pierce. Laura said: “I’m going to enjoy appearing alongside the RPO because I’ve worked with them before. I also love outdoor summer performances. They are something I look forward to every year, especially if the sun is shining and people bring a picnic. Everything is so relaxed. “I’m so proud to be England Rugby’s official anthem singer and get to perform at Twickenham in front of so many avid fans. That’s why it’s great that Rugby World Cup 2015 is coming to the Olympic Stadium. It’s going to be an amazing experience for everyone. “When I performed at the Newham London Run at the Stadium just before the 2012 Games it was so emotional,
and the paint wasn’t even dry then. To see people running on the track where so many gold medal athletes would soon be standing was very special. I’m sure it will be the same for the rugby players and supporters later this year.”

On Monday 27 April a commemorative paving stone will be laid in the Cenotaph area of Central Park, High Street South, East Ham, honouring Victoria Cross (VC) recipient Midshipman George Leslie Drewry. Members of the public are invited to attend the ceremony, which will take place at 10.30am and will be attended by Mayor Sir Robin Wales, Newham Chief Executive Kim Bromley-Derry and Honorary Vice Admiral The Lord Sterling of Plaistow, CBE. The event is part of a series of events honouring Newham’s five First World War VC recipients, with commemorations occurring near the time of the 100th anniversary of their acts of bravery.
“ The paving stones will provide a lasting legacy of local heroes within our community” The Victoria Cross is the highest military decoration, awarded for acts of valour “in the face of the enemy” and the paving stones will provide a lasting legacy of local heroes within our community. George Leslie Drewry was born on 3 November 1894 at 53 Haslemere (now Kitchener) Road, Forest Gate. He was awarded the VC for his valour when aged 20, serving as a Midshipman in the Royal Naval Reserve during the Gallipoli landings on 25 April 1915. Midshipman Drewry was aboard the SS River Clyde, a cargo ship under the guidance of Commander Edward Unwin, for the first landings at Gallipoli. During the attempted beach landing, barbed wire
10
on the sea bed prevented boats reaching the shore. Soldiers became entangled in the wire and were killed in the open water. The original plan had been to form a bridge of barge boats for soldiers to reach land, but a gap had been left between two of them, which made it impossible for the men to cross, and dozens were shot as they stood helpless on the uncompleted bridge. Midshipman Drewry went into the water, wading ashore to secure a tow rope. Commander Unwin and fellow sailor Able Seaman Bill Williams had nearly reached the shore with the bridging barge in tow, but the rope they had was not long enough. Drewry went back to the ship to get another length, and while the other two were waiting, Williams was shot. Unwin carried him back to the barge but Williams was already dead. When Drewry returned with the rope it did not take long to secure the barge and then the troops began at once to cross the bridge which remained under heavy fire. A shot then severed the lashing rope and again the barges went adrift. Midshipman Drewry was aboard the inshore barge, and was struck in the head by a fragment of shell. He hastily bound his wound with a soldier’s scarf, and, jumping overboard with a line between his teeth, swam towards the other barge. Once again the rope was too short but another midshipman threw himself over
the side with a longer rope and lashed the barges together. Unfortunately the rope broke a third time. The London Gazette reported on 16 August, 1915: “Midshipman Drewry assisted Commander Unwin at the work of securing the barges under heavy rifle and maxim fire. He was wounded in the head, but continued his work and twice subsequently attempted to swim from barge to barge with a line.” Drewry later achieved the rank of Lieutenant, but on 2 August 1918 he died in an accident while on active service on in the Orkney Islands. A block fell from a derrick and fractured his skull. His body was carried south and buried in the City of London Cemetery, Manor Park. His Victoria Cross is displayed at the Imperial War Museum. The Sound of Music Jon Cullen is the musical director of All Saints Chorus and Orchestra. Based at West Ham Parish Church, the group are celebrating their 20th anniversary season. 12
> WORKING LIVES “I was born in West Ham, and most of my life has been in Newham,” said Jon. “I started off as a chorister, and was assistant organist here when I was 14.” After attending university, Jon returned to his first church and was a dedicated member of their choir. “The choir here has always been good, but we wanted to do something a bit more ambitious outside of the Sunday services, so we formed All Saints Chorus.” Working together with an orchestra of professional musicians, the choir’s repertoire features a range of choral music. “Sometimes people think we’re a religious organisation, because we do a lot of religious music, but that’s just where a lot of the choral repertoire is. We’ve done works by Handel, Bach, Brahms, Mozart, Verdi and Beethoven. We do a lot of modern classical music as well.” The ensemble has a dedicated membership of around 55 and give most of their concerts at West Ham Parish Church. Over the course of two decades, both their audience and the choir itself have seen a big boost in numbers. Jon said: “There’s a nucleus in the choir that have been here for ten or 15 years, and there’s a few from the first concert 20 years ago.” Unusually for a choir of this standard, All Saints holds no auditions. Anybody that wants to join is welcome. Jon says: “We never put any barriers up. Over the past 20 years, I don’t think anyone has turned up who genuinely can’t sing at all. Some people are a bit nervous at the beginning, but we tend to hold on to our people.” One of the things that sets All Saints apart from other community choirs is a professional set of musicians. In order to stage their concerts, Jon and his team coordinate fundraising year-round. He said: “We’re completely selffunding and our budget is quite high. The orchestra and soloists we use are professional. The most recent concert we performed had players that normally appear at Covent Garden or for the London Philharmonic or the London Symphony Orchestra. We tend to find we get the same players coming back.
That in itself is a good sign.” Unsurprisingly for a group with so many long-standing members, being a member of All Saints is not just about the musical activities. Jon said: “We’re like a big family really. We get on very well together. Each year we all go away for a long weekend to the country and people bring their families. We rehearse but we also have a good time.”
“ Members would be disappointed if they weren’t singing in Newham. We like performing here and do a good job. ” Over the years the chorus has given performances outside the borough, but their base has remained in Newham. Their newly renovated church provides a comfortable and acoustically suitable performance space and the choir are passionate about the venue because of its location in the community. Jon added: “We are very conscious that we do it in Newham. Some music groups often rehearse locally, but perform outside their area. Members would be disappointed if they weren’t singing in Newham. We like performing here and do a good job. You have to see us to appreciate how good we are.” To find out more information about the Chorus, visit allsaintschorus.org Tickets can be purchased on the door on performance nights, or in advance by calling 07513 414 665.

More than half a million young women joined the Army, Navy and Air Force in the Second World War. Nuala Calvi and Duncan Barrett are now telling the story of many of these women in their new book The Girls Who Went To War. The authors have interviewed 100 exservicewomen for the book, and focus in particular on three extraordinary stories from across the women’s services: the Auxiliary Territorial Service, Women’s Auxiliary Air Force and Women’s Royal Naval Service. Nuala said: “The women were lured by the opportunity for independence and adventure, and the prospect of doing something important for the war effort – something that really mattered.” Many roles that women took up were very dangerous. Nuala says: “A lot of people don’t realise the contribution women made in the Second World War.” In the course of action, some women w were captured by the Germans in the
14
rush to Dunkirk, others were machine gunned by the Luftwaffe as they operated searchlights, while still more followed the D-Day invasion in air ambulances to bring back the injured. Many won medals for bravery and some 2,000 lost their lives. The Girls Who Went to War follows Duncan and Nuala’s best-selling 2012 book The Sugar Girls, which told the story of the female workers of Tate & Lyle’s East End factories in Silvertown in the mid-1940s. In the course of writing, they found many interviewees for The Girls Who Went To War. The Girls Who Went to War has been published to tie in with the 70th anniversary of VE Day. To celebrate the book’s release, Newham Bookshop,
Barking Road E13, are holding a street party on Friday 8 May, with book signings, drinks and themed refreshments. Duncan said: “The Newham Bookshop was the biggest champion of The Sugar Girls and we’re really looking forward to it.” Nuala added: “It’s a great way of reviving the VE Day spirit. People can come along and celebrate with some of the people who were there on the original VE Day.” The Newham Bookshop street party starts at 6pm and is a free event.] RSVP if you wish to attend by emailing info@newhambooks.co.uk The Girls Who Went To War will be published on 7 May at £7.99. A supporting role
HEALTH MENTALESS WEEK AWARENMAY 2015 11-17
About a quarter of people experience some kind of mental health problem each year. Nishi Landa overcame mental health problems with the right support from Newham’s local services.
“I suffered post-natal depression after I had my fourth child at the age of 26. Some days I couldn’t get out of bed: I would just stare at walls for hours. I didn’t have an appetite, my throat was dry and I had panic attacks. Some days I just couldn’t sit down but at the same time I felt I had no energy. My mood was very low and I would cry a lot.
“ I feel positive now that I can deal with ups and downs in life. I feel stronger and I want to help others “Four years ago there was an open day for ‘ASK’ in Stratford – a service-user led project for people with mental health issues and carers. I attended a workshop called ‘Stepping Forward’. Doing that workshop
made me feel confident. It was like a new door had opened for me. It kept me going. I didn’t want to take a step back – that wasn’t me. I wanted to go forward in my life. “I am still on my journey. I’m doing good things, like exercising three hours a week, and I have lost a stone in weight. Attending the group at ASK helped me to feel confident enough to take control of my life and get active. I’ve started to believe in myself. “I feel positive now that I can deal with ups and downs in life. I feel stronger and I want to help others. It has been a rollercoaster but attending the ASK service and volunteering with Hestia, the charity behind the ASK project, has helped me to improve and maintain a positive frame of mind.”
Support for mental health needs If you have experienced mental health issues and would like to talk to someone about it, you can find details of local support services online at www.newham.gov.uk/ mentalhealth. Alternatively, speak to your GP as soon as possible.
Get in touch with ASK ASK provides a range of training and activities designed to promote mental recovery and wellbeing. To find out more visit www.ask-newham.org or call 020 8221 2090.

Don’t let them get away with it Newham Council is committed to making our borough the best it can be. In the 2013/14 municipal year we issued more than 8,000 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) to residents and visitors for a range of environment crime offences, including littering, fly-tipping and fly-posting, illegal street trading and waste in front gardens. Unfortunately, there are offenders who believe they’re above the law and provide incorrect information about themselves or fail to pay their fines. The council will not apologise for cracking down hard on crime and anti-social behaviour. The pictures on this page show people who are avoiding paying their Fixed Penalty Notice. If you recognise anyone please call 020 3373 4479 and quote the reference number below the picture. If you do not pay your FPN, we will take you to court, where you could be ordered to pay far more than the amount of the original penalty notice. Every month at Thames Magistrates Court the council undertakes a number of prosecutions. Large fines are issued and individuals are nearly always ordered to pay the costs of the case and a victim surcharge.
Ensuring your anonymity Newham Council is committed to tackling crime and anti-social behaviour in partnership with the police and other agencies. If you provide information regarding identities: • you will not be required to provide your name • you will not be required to leave your contact details • you will not have to make a statement

Donations for foodbank Newham Foodbank on Tollgate Road, E6, has received an increase in luxury donations, as passengers at London City Airport have fallen foul of hand luggage rules. Many food items, especially those in cans and jars, are classified as liquids, and are confiscated by security agents. Items such as jam, marmite and baked beans are some of the most regularly confiscated foodstuffs, although there has also been an increase in luxury brands being seized. London City Airport donated 300 items collected between January and March this year to Newham Foodbank, including 34 jars of Fortnum & Mason jam, marmalade and lemon curd and 22 jars from Harrods. A spokesman said: “We are very pleased to be able to find such a good home for confiscated items.” For more information about Newham Foodbank, visit www.newham.foodbank.org.uk
