CONTENTS Hi! I firstly wanted to wish you a happy and enjoyable upcoming summer school holidays. I bet you’re looking forward to a relaxing break, especially if you’ve had tests or exams this year (I hope they went well)! I remember being super excited about the time I’d have off from school when I was your age as it meant six adventurous and fun weeks! I’d spend my time hanging out with my mates, having a laugh playing in Plashet Park or going on picnics with my family and friends. I also spent time every day enjoying all the activities at the local library, including the Summer Reading Club. I read a lot of books! To make sure your summer has plenty of memorable moments in Newham, like I did when I was growing up here, we’ve got hundreds of fun and interesting activities for you to enjoy. Our summer event programme offers a great range of activities and events for you, your mates and members of your family to experience. Once again this summer most of them are completely free. Our Youth Zones are back with a range of fun and fabulous activities including multi-sports, arts, music technology, video games and hair and beauty. As well as providing an opportunity to try something different with your friends, you can also get to meet new people, develop a talent or discover an interest that will keep you busy even when summer is over. The very popular Summer Reading Challenge returns to your local library and there’s a range of fun sports activities across Newham’s parks. As well as that, the Discover Children’s Centre in Stratford offers free entry to all Newham’s residents. If you want to pick up a new skill, get ahead of the game at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with exciting courses and programmes at London Stadium Learning and East Summer School. You could become the next big thing in hip-hop, film making, fashion and much more.

The Newham Show also returns on 13 and 14 July. Get family, friends and neighbours of all ages together for a weekend filled with workshops, a funfair and giant pools. I really want our young people to get involved this year – it’s not just for your kid brothers and sisters! And if music is your thing, then don’t miss our two-day music extravaganza Under the Stars which is back from 10–11 August. It’s going to be really special this year. As a young person in our borough, your well-being, happiness and safety is very important to us, and we want to give you as many positive opportunities to enjoy. It’s part of our plan for Newham to become the best place in the world for a young person to grow up, and that’s why you are at the heart of everything we do.

RACHEL ROONEY

CHITRA SOUNDAR

Tuesday 6 August 2pm Plaistow Library, North Street, E13 9HL 7+ years

Monday 5 August 2pm Green Street Library 7+ years

Rachel Rooney is an award winning poet, but even that doesn’t do her justice. Here’s a glimpse of one of her poems from her fab collection ‘A Kid In My Class’ “He thinks he’s a sub hero dude. A dude. A geezer who’s too cool for school uniform. Chews on mint gum. Calls me Swot, Loser, Dumb. Tells me to chill. Thinks he is it. Well he’s not” . There’s a poem for every kid in the class; come along you might recognise yourself or someone else...

Chitra Sounder is a closet clown, writer, teacher and storyteller. As a kid, she has danced in a Bollywood movie, acted on stage and disliked Maths because it never added up. Chitra grew up on a wholesome diet of stories from Indian myths. She hangs out in schools, libraries and bookshops making up stories and regaling everyone with tales from her books and childhood. We are lucky enough to have her hanging out with us this summer, don’t miss it!

LAURA ELLEN ANDERSON

Friday 2 August 2pm Manor Park Library, 685 – 693 Romford Road, E12 5AD 7+ years When she’s not trying to take over the world or fighting sock-stealing monsters, Laura Ellen Anderson is a professional children’s book author and illustrator. Join us for an amazingly awesome event with Laura this summer. In this highly interactive workshop learn how to draw some of Laura’s amazing creations. Simply unmissable!

Make a difference to you and your neighbourhood by volunteering for as little as one hour this summer. Our unique programme offers flexibility and variety. You can make a big impact in just a small amount of time. Who knows, you may even make it a regular activity! Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, learn more about your local community, develop new or existing skills and to have fun.

Newham’s Volunteers has played a significant role in supporting a number of national and international high profile events. These include the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, the London Triathlon and London Marathon. Volunteers have experienced the magical moments that these exciting events offer and many have gained an accreditation in Event Stewarding and progressed to paid employment.

We have a range of volunteering opportunities available right on your doorstep. This includes roles at your local library, leisure centre and parks or open spaces. Your volunteering journey really can start here.

Here’s just a snap shot of what you can get involved in this summer:

Newham’s Volunteers offers flexible volunteering opportunities on a short and long-term basis.
