Marking the centenary of World War I This year marks 100 years since the start of World War I, the conflict that changed history, the maps of the world and took the lives of eight million soldiers and nine million civilians. In east London, more men volunteered than anywhere else in the country. The Cenotaph in Central Park will be the base for an array of exhibits looking back at what life was like in Newham in 1914. Trench warfare Find out what it was like for the soldiers on the front line in the trench experience – a carefully reconstructed replica trench. The trench will feature a bolt hole and bunker made from timber and corrugated iron to give a true to life experience. As well as an overview of local people whose names have been immortalised on the Cenotaph, the area will contain exhibits on Little Germany and the Home Front in Newham. You can also try on period costumes.

Ooh la la, Let’s Get
the Party Started
On Monday 7 July the Tour de France will roll into Newham. We’re inviting you to take celebrations up a gear and have a wheelie great time with your friends and neighbours. If you’ve got an idea for an event a Let’s Get the Party Started (LGtPS) grant could help fund it. Newham Council’s LGtPS grant programme is a chance for residents to get together and have a good time with help of a grant of £250, or £500 in exceptional cases. With all schools closed and traffic disruption expected on race day, why not say adieu to the commute, bid bonjour to the riders as they whizz through the borough and celebrate with a French or
cycling themed event. We’re giving you carte blanche to come up with ideas for your event. Why not have a ‘no pain no gain’ competition where you ask your friends and neighbours to take part in a pastry competition. Think up games like giant Jenga Eiffel Tower or hold a disco where everyone wears a yellow jersey and you only play French songs. More than 200,000 people have
already enjoyed a LGtPS event, which encourages residents to get together through community events to form lasting bonds and networks. Your event doesn’t have to be themed. And as long as it is a one-off and is open to everyone in the community we can help make it happen. Visit www.newham.gov.uk/grants to find out more and apply.
