n o i t c u Introd Welcome
Summer is finally here and in Newham we promise a host of fun opportunities for you to get out, get active and join in! Our summer events programme offers free activities and events for all the family. You can take part in the summer reading challenge at your local library, play a sport in your local park with your friends and family or learn a new skill by doing a course. Thousands of people come along to Newham Council’s summer events every year to enjoy free entertainment, top musicians, local talent, fireworks and much more. Your summer gets under way with a weekend of family fun at the Mayor’s Newham Show on 11-12 July, which includes the popular Mayor’s Newham Carnival. This year both will have a fab 1960s theme to celebrate Newham reaching its 50th birthday. If music is your thing then the summer continues in fantastic style with our four-day music extravaganza Under the Stars from 13 - 16 August. If you want to carry on with your learning over the summer or learn a new skill, take a look at the fantastic courses available from our Summer School. So whether you want to Get Creative, Go Digital, Be Active or Get Skilful, we have something for everyone. You can also visit the Discover Children’s Arts Centre in Stratford, which has teamed up with us to offer free entry to Newham’s youngest residents. Don’t forget to visit www.newham.gov.uk/summerschool to book your course as soon possible to avoid disappointment because places are booked on a first come, first served basis. If you’re aged 14 - 18, get involved in our elections for Newham’s Young Mayor and the Youth Council. With activities including the Youth Opportunity Fund and the Enterprise Programme, this is your chance to promote the interests of Newham’s young people. Getting out and active is a great way to make friends and have fun this summer as well as an enjoyable way to keep fit and healthy. From the free swims in Newham’s leisure centres to the variety of free activities going on in our parks, there is much for you and your family to do. We encourage you to enjoy all that Newham has to offer this summer.
Sir Robin Wales Mayor of Newham 2
Yaseen Bux Young Mayor of Newham

Saturday 11 July and Sunday 12 July 12noon to 6pm Central Park, East Ham, E6 The Mayor’s Newham Show provides two days of free fun and entertainment for all ages. Not only is entrance to the event free of charge, but almost all activities on site are too. Why not pack a picnic and bring your friends and family for a free day out in Newham this summer? There really is something for everyone at the event. With three stages, live music, dance and entertainment will not be in short supply. The Main Stage will feature performances from Newham’s finest talent alongside the Cabaret Tent which will feature awe inspiring live variety entertainment throughout.
Not only is there a huge dedicated children’s entertainment area full to the brim with face painting, bouncy castles, circus skills, story telling, arts and crafts, games, and inflatables but Newham’s young ones also have their own dedicated children’s stage with live entertainment that has been programmed with Newham’s littlest residents in mind. Come and see how we transform the tennis courts in Central Park into a traditional British seaside experience complete with deck chairs, buckets and spades, a helter skelter, donkey rides, live steel band, 40 tonnes of sand and a paddling pool.
Sunday 12 July Saturday 11 July On Saturday 11 July naughty pirates Cook and Line from hit Cbeebies show Swashbuckle will feature at the event with live performances and meet and greet opportunities.
Classic children’s character Postman Pat will be taking a break from delivering post in Greendale on Sunday 12 July and instead will take to the stage at intervals throughout the event. Pantone®

Newham Volunte ’s ers Would you like to get more involved with your local community or support a major national or international event in Newham? Maybe you would like to help someone less able? If the answer is yes to any of those questions and you’re aged 16 or over, then why not become one of Newham’s Volunteers. Newham’s Volunteer programme provides a flexible service that offers both short-term and long-term opportunities. Whatever time you have to spare there will be an event or opportunity that you could help out at and we would love to hear from you. Our programme is open to everyone. We will train and support you so that you can be the very best you can be, while helping those around you.
You don’t even have to go very far to volunteer. For example, you could help out at: • your local library • a local day centre • your local leisure centre • a local event • your local park or open space
Got an hour to spare?
Not sure? Then get in touch and tell us about your skills and what you would like to do to help.
Make a difference to you, your community, neighbourhood, and local area by giving up just one hour this summer to volunteer.
Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, learn more about your local community, develop new skills and have some fun.
London Borough of Newham and activeNewham’s Volunteer programme offers a huge variety of ways for residents to volunteer and play their part in supporting their community. We understand that time for everyone is limited so the volunteer programme is flexible and varied. There is so much you can do in just one hour and who knows, maybe it can become a regular activity.
With a huge range of ways to get involved on your doorstep, your volunteering journey starts here.

You’ll be spinning on your knees instead! Our style of jazz is rooted in clubs and many of today’s popular street dance styles have taken tiny elements of what we do. Street-Fusion Jazz Dance is an exciting mix of fast intricate footwork, so-called drop moves and acrobatic floor work, and it’s all about your creativity and personality as a dancer! The beauty of Street-Fusion Jazz Dance is that it’s flexible, lacking the rigidity of many other dance styles and it is for this reason that it appeals to such a wide audience. The words ‘wrong’ and ‘technically unclean’ which we so often hear in dance schools are replaced with ‘individuality’ and ‘energy’ and we firmly believe that anyone can get into dancing our style of dance.
