Summer has never been better in Newham with the promise of a wealth of fun opportunities. Our summer events programme offers activities and events for all the family, most of which are completely free. Why not take part in our Summer Reading Challenge at your local library or play a sport in your local park? Thousands of people come along to Newham Council’s summer events every year to enjoy free entertainment, top musicians, local talent, fireworks and much more. Your summer gets under way with a weekend of family fun at the Mayor’s Newham Show on 9-10 July, which includes the popular Mayor’s Newham Carnival. The soundtrack to your summer continues to delight and entertain with our annual four-day music extravaganza Under the Stars from 18-21 August. If you want to carry on with your learning over the summer or develop a new skill, take a look at the fantastic courses available from our Summer School. So whether you want to Get Creative, Go Digital, Be Active or Get Skilful, we have something for everyone. You can also visit the Discover Children’s Story Centre in Stratford, which has once again teamed up with us to offer free entry to Newham’s youngest residents. Don’t forget to visit www.newham.gov.uk/summerschool to book your course as soon possible to avoid disappointment because places are booked on a first come, first served basis. If you’re aged 14–18, get involved in our elections for the Young Mayor and the Youth Council. With opportunities including the Young Mayor Activity Fund and the very first Young Mayor Festival on Saturday 27 August, this is your chance to showcase the talent of Newham’s young people. We think that Newham is one of the best places in the country when it comes to opportunities to get out and about, get active, make friends and have fun. Make sure you don’t miss out this summer on everything Newham has to offer.

FAM LY FUN S ’ R O Y A M E TH W O H S M A NEWH Saturday 9 July and Sunday 10 July 12noon to 6pm Central Park, East Ham, E6 The Mayor’s Newham Show provides two days of FREE fun and entertainment for all ages. Not only is entrance to the event free of charge, but almost all activities on site are too. Why not pack a picnic and bring your friends and family for a free day out in Newham this summer? There really is something for everyone at the event. With three stages, live music, dance and entertainment will not be in short supply. The Main Stage will feature performances from Newham’s finest talent alongside the Cabaret Tent which has awe inspiring live variety entertainment throughout the two days. This year also sees the return of the Children’s Stage with live entertainment that has been programmed with Newham’s littlest residents in mind. For 2016, the children’s entertainment area will be dedicated to Roald Dahl. The area will be separated into four sections, each representing a different book. This will include: Fantastic Mr Fox, Matilda, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and George’s Marvellous Medicine. Within each section there will be different activities including face-painting, arts and crafts and much more. Come and see how we transform the tennis courts in Central Park into a traditional British seaside experience complete with deck chairs, buckets and spades, a helter skelter, donkey rides, a live steel band, 40 tonnes of sand and a giant paddling pool.

If arts and crafts are more your style, head to the Hobbies Tent and take part in a host of free activities that are set to inspire both young and old residents, and you might end up with a new hobby for you and your family. Over the two days there will be a range of things to make from scratch and take away with you. Free activities include biscuit decoration, jewellery design, mehndi, hair and fashion, floristry, balloon art, dance, rock climbing and much, much more. Pop into the Newham Village Fete and partake in some quintessential summer activities including crazy golf (which will now include a full 12 hole course), coconut shy, the high striker for those with the utmost strength, and a stall where you can purchase plants from local allotments. Food enthusiasts will be in their element in the Village Fete where Leaside Food Academy will be hosting live cooking demonstrations with professional chefs, cooking competitions and the chance to participate in dough and butter making. Have your medical needs met in the Healthy Living marquee where GPs and experts will be on hand to advise you on how to lead a healthier life. Complemented by a range of activities designed to help you live a more active life with activeNewham, you’ll be sure to sleep well after a day out at the Mayor’s Newham Show.

Monday 15 August – Friday 19 August 10am-3pm Forest Gate Youth Zone, 1 Woodgrange Road, E7 0DH 11-16 years Street-Fusion Jazz Dance is nothing like the theatre style most people associate with Jazz; definitely no Jazz hands here. You’ll be spinning on your knees instead! Our style of Jazz Dance is rooted in clubs and many of today’s popular street dance styles have taken tiny elements of what we do. Street-Fusion Jazz Dance is an exciting mix of fast intricate footwork, so-called drop moves and acrobatic floor work, and it’s all about your creativity and personality as a dancer. The beauty of Street–Fusion Jazz Dance is that it’s totally flexible, lacking the rigidity of many other dance styles and it is for this reason that it appeals to such a wide audience, especially young people. The words ‘wrong’ and ‘technically unclean’ which we so often hear in dance schools are replaced with ‘individuality’ and ‘energy’ and we firmly believe that anyone can get into dancing our style of dance.
