Children and Young People’s Guide to
ENJOY A RANGE OF ACTIVITIES IN NEWHAM’S PARKS, LEISURE CENTRES AND LIBRARIES
WELCOME
Hello everyone! I’m Rokhsana, your new Mayor of Newham, and I wanted to wish you all a fun and awesome time during the summer holidays coming up. For those of you who are heading on a holiday abroad, don’t forget to take your sunscreen and stay safe while you are travelling. For those of you not travelling, enjoy your Newham ‘staycation’ as we’ve planned loads of fun things for children and young people in the Borough over July and August! Working with young people from our Youth Zones, Youth Movements, and the Youth Council plus the Young Mayor Tomiwa, we’ve made sure that there’s loads of exciting and free things for you and your mates to do over the holiday across Newham. Some of the activities include the return of the Summer Reading Challenge at your local library, and a range of sport options in your local park. Our Youth Zones are also back with a range of activities including music technology, arts and crafts, and hair and beauty. Our Youth Zones are also planning some additional activities and further info will be circulated soon. We really hope that you get involved in a range of great activities that we have lined up for young people of all ages – plus if you’re up for getting ahead of your new school year we also have a number of studybased activities for you to do. If you are up for it, you can also visit the fantastic Discover Children’s Story Centre in Stratford, which has once again teamed up with us to offer free entry to our youngest residents. We also have the Newham Carnival coming up which this year is all about the history of the circus, and includes the Newham Show which will be at East Ham’s Central Park on 7 and 8 July - lots of fun activities and games for you and your friends (and family members) to enjoy together. I’m also really looking forward to our four-night music extravaganza Under the Stars which is back from 16 to 19 August ending with a fab firework display on the final evening. We hope this summer guide is useful for you as it shows the range of things that Newham has to offer for you and your friends, because as our young residents you really are at the heart of everything we do in this Borough. Also why not share your summer fun by tagging us into your photos via twitter, Instagram or snapchat and we can share! Use the hashtag #NewhamFun or make one up and we’ll use it too! Have a great summer!

It’s a jolly holiday with Mary!
We’ll be taking visitors young and old back in time with our Mary Poppins-themed activities in the heart of Central Park on both Saturday and Sunday. From Pearly Kings and Queens to cheeky chimney sweeps, we’ll have the whole family singing “Let’s Go Fly A Kite”! Join Mary & Bert as they jump through a pavement drawing and have an adventure. Children can take to the gallopers on a traditional Edwardian carousel. Strolling through the park will give children the opportunity to try the coconut shies and penguin skittles, have a go at chalk pavement drawings with helpful tips from a local artist – and even meet a Pearly King & Queen. Families can also make their very own kite to take away and fly later in the day. Grab your broom and follow Bert through The East End streets of 1910 London. Get your knees up, step in time and dance away on our London roof tops as our professional dancers teach families the Chimney Sweep routine. There’ll be whistling workshops, cockney rhyming slang, a jamboree and even a cartoonist to draw pictures that children can take home as a souvenir of their day.

YOUNG MAYOR Message from the Young Mayor As the Young Mayor of Newham I wanted to take this opportunity to give you an update on what myself and the Youth Council have been up to since being elected back in October 2017.
So far we’ve had:
We wanted to focus on giving young people a voice through youth empowerment, providing exam support and finally showcase the diversity and talent in our borough.
• Mental health workshops/sessions to raise awareness, dealing with exam stress, anxiety and the support services available.
Our first Youth Voice consultation took place in January to understand young people’s needs during the exam season. With over 100 young people attending, study support was a key priority, so I teamed up with East Ham Community Neighbourhood and the Renewal programme to deliver a 10-week study support programme.
• Breakfast Club on the weekends involving some group study and exercise sessions, allowing students to get their weekend off to a positive start.
80
• Supported study sessions focussing on English, maths and science.
• Fun activities to help de-stress including quizzes, debates, pamper sessions and healthy living workshops.
One of the main requests which came out of the youth consultation was to provide students with information on the options available for school or college leavers. We are now delivering a ‘Young Mayor’s Careers Fair – Look to the Future’ for those in years 9-11 or in sixth form. The event will showcase the different paths available to us including further education, employment opportunities and apprenticeships.
Finally, I want to thank everyone who has supported me and the Youth council so far.
Tomiwa Akintunde Young Mayor of Newham
We have attended a number of engagement events with the new Mayor Rokhsana Fiaz, to talk about the issues affecting young people including the rise of youth violence. We will also be at the Newham Show this year to engage with our community. So don’t forget to drop by on either Saturday 7 or Sunday 8 July, 12noon - 6pm at Central Park.
