Publisher’s Note On the Cover Congratulations on your engagement!
Putting this issue together is getting me so excited for the 2011 wedding season. There seems to be an overall feeling of fun in everything from textured wedding gowns to bold colors and non-traditional seating at receptions. Where simple once reigned, there is an emphasis on making weddings subtly elaborate and luxurious, while watching the price tag, of course. Planning a wedding in this economy causes couples to be more careful than ever about their spending, which isn’t always a bad thing. If that means paying closer attention to the vendors you choose, the dress you purchase, accommodations for your guests, and so forth, well, we kind of like that. New Hampshire Wedding Magazine is here to help.
Now back to fun! What you will find in this issue: “Music that Moves” features the hottest wedding entertainment in New Hampshire. The fun factor of your reception depends on your DJ or band. Someone that can inspire your guests to get up and groove will make the difference between, “Your wedding was so awesome!” and, “Didn’t know the Humpty Dance was back in, just saying”. “Wedding Receptions for the Modern Couple” gives more insight on planning a memorable event. Based on the book, “The Best Wedding Reception…. Ever!” by Peter Merry, the article introduces small details that will make a big difference at your reception. Highlighted is the Scenic Monadnock region, including a photo shoot at The Inn at Valley Farm and a Real Wedding, both in Walpole. Complimenting the articles and photos is an exclusive listing of the area’s best wedding professionals. If you aspire to elegant-rustic on your big day, another hot trend in weddings, look to this area of the state for inspiration. We’re doing so many fun (there’s that word again) things to connect with brides and vendors in 2011 using nhweddingmagazine.com, social media, and our bridal shows. It is all too much to mention here so keep up with us online. We want to hear from you, too, so send us your photos, experiences, and questions. Thank you for being a part of New Hampshire Wedding Magazine! Best wishes, Kristina Hathaway, Publisher kristina@nhweddingmagazine.com www.facebook.com/nhweddingmagandbridalshows www.twitter.com/mynhwedding www.nhweddingmagazine.com

Jenny and James Spidle May 8, 2010
F
amily and friends are very important to Jenny and James. For their wedding, they wanted guests to easily walk from the ceremony to reception venue. The couple also wanted to give guests a sense of what is important to them, as well. The Hanover Inn and town of Hanover fit all of Jenny and James’ needs. Jenny grew up in Hanover, and the architectural style of Rollins Chapel was similar to the architecture of James’ hometown, Easton, NH. During the weekend, guests were able to take advantage of the area with various planned activities. A morning walk around Occum pond was organized, as were various events at the Dartmouth athletic center. Access is included to the facility for guests of the Inn. Jenny and James’ wedding centered around fun! The couple shared their love of board games with guests. The wedding favors were pocket-sized games like Boggle and Twister. 12
w w w.nhwe dd ingma g a zine .com
There was a table of props set up at the wedding, which included fake moustaches, silly hats, feather boas, clown noses, and a Polaroid camera accompanying the guest book. The couple encouraged guests to take pictures of themselves wearing the props, and include it in the guest book. It was a great way for the couple to look back through the guest book and read entries, while at the same time laughing out loud at the silly pictures they included. Another fun aspect of the wedding included the parent dance’s choreographed to Michael Jackson’s “Blame it on the Boogie”. It set the tone for the rest of the guests to share in the fun-loving mood and join in on the dance floor. Jenny and James wanted guests to dance as much as possible so they put in much effort and time researching bands and music. In order to give guests relief after hours of dancing, they were provided with flip flops at the end of the night. Knowing guests would build up an appetite after all the activity, pizzas were also ordered from a favorite pizza shop to be delivered at the end of the night! The best advice Jenny and James received from people about the wedding was to enjoy the day. Although they knew some things would not go exactly as planned, the couple knew the most important part of their wedding was having their friends and family there to celebrate along with them.

Music that Moves You... Seth Kaye Photography
By Carol Corbett
It’s your big day, the one you’ve been dreaming about your whole life, you need the perfect music to set the mood. From big bands, to soloists, to string quartets and not-your-average DJs, you can book them all in the granite state. If you’re looking for a dynamic DJ, you’ve got a lot of options, but perhaps none who’ll set your dance floor afire like Joey Dion from Main Event DJs (www. amainevent.com). With seventeen years of experience under his belt, it’s his breath you might want to watch since he’s breathed fire at weddings past. Joey and his wife, Kristen run the show, but it’s the bride and groom who take center stage and they’ll do whatever it takes to make them happy, including remixing music to work with choreographed dances and slowing down songs for the first dance. Joey will wear a jester costume, dance the cha-cha, or lead guests in the electric slide– whatever works for your wedding. “You did everything we asked for and more…from the day we met you at the wedding show you showed true professionalism and an amazing amount of energy! From the intros to the conga line, and the Irish Jig we had a blast!” Maybe you’re looking for something of a different speed…perhaps an introduction to your reception astride a motorcycle? Yup, Get Down Tonight Entertainment (www.getdowntonight.com) has done it. Along with 16
father-daughter dance montage music that will make your guests ooh and aww, laugh and cry, then get up and dance. Twenty-two DJs are currently available to choose from with a new DJ trained each year. Every DJ has a different personality and all are available to preview in two-minute video clips online. If you like what you see, eight-minute videos are also available and then interviews with the DJ’s themselves. Whomever you pick is who you’ll get and a twenty-four-hour hotline is available in case of emergencies – what more could you ask for? “I feel like I’ve known you all forever. Every time I called, whoever answered the phone made me feel like they knew me, that I wasn’t just another client. I don’t care what type of functions we have in the future; Get Down Tonight will be the first phone call I make!” Maybe you want more of a live show, The Nines Band (www.ninesband.com) has been swinging to the beat for nearly ten years and all ten (yes ten) of their members always dress to “the nines” which is where the band name comes from. And since one of the lead singers owns a dance studio, routines can be added to enhance the music and the atmosphere. With a song list that spans over 60 years, they’ll liven up your event with experience and pizzazz. “There were many fantastic elements of our wedding but the band has been THE topic of conversation with friends and family even a week later. To say that you made our celebration is not an exaggeration.”
w w w.nhwe dd ingma g a zine .com
Perhaps a combination of live music and DJ services is the match for you. Try Cuzin Richard Entertainment Associates (www.cuzinrichard.com) who package DJs with bands as well as ceremony music. They’re able to do this because the DJs they represent are in the bands, so they’ll play the set and then DJ during the breaks to boot. Chose from Celtic to jazz, traditional to dance bands, whatever suits your style. As the co-founders of First Night Portsmouth, these folks know how to put on a party.
“Jillian performed an unbelievably moving ceremony. I couldn’t have wished for a better vocalist.” No matter what atmosphere you’re creating for your wedding, you’ll find just the right musicians right here in New Hampshire.
“Made our life easy, with one stop shopping for rehearsal dinner, to ceremony to reception, with experience, quality and fair prices!” Jillian Hutchinson (www.jillianhutchinson.com) is a NH vocalist and DJ who offers it all in one package. As a classically-trained vocalist, she can perform ceremony music that will give your guests goose bumps, then turn around and DJ your entire reception. Adding to the environment, Jillian can sing while she DJs for the best of both worlds. She’s a one-woman show that will wow your MEentNHWeddmag11/2010v2:Layout 1 crowd. 11/8/10 7:55 PM Page

Emma and Ryan Dono F
May 15, 2010
or their wedding, Emma and Ryan were looking for a location to reflect a country-elegant theme. They also wanted a venue that could accommodate both the ceremony and reception, and one that had accommodations for guests close by. Alyson’s Orchard had everything the couple wanted. As soon as they drove up the hill to the venue and saw the beautiful view, they knew it was the right spot for their big day. The couple incorporated some of Eastern Orthodox traditions from Ryan’s Albanian Orthodox background. One tradition calls for the wedding party to collect water from three different bodies of water the night before the wedding, which the bride will use to bathe the next day. Another tradition is the Albanian dancing circle. Both of Emma’s parents were passed away, but she carried their spirits in her bridal bouquet. Emma’s friend’s mother gave her a ribbon with small charms that included her photos of her parents, and the ribbon was tied to her bouquet. 34

For the bride and groom who are searching for an idyllic country wedding, Walpole’s Inn at Valley Farms is a wonderful option. The 105 acre working organic farm can host intimate weddings with a maximum of 75 guests. The Inn accommodates up to 28 overnight guests in it’s B&B style rooms, cottages & farmhouse. Guests of the inn will enjoy delicious localvore style breakfasts with food produced on the farm. Valley Farms raises it’s own pastured meats, eggs and vegetables which inn keeper Jacqueline Caserta lovingly crafts in to breakfasts that look as good as they taste. The Inn is open year round and the barn and grounds are available seasonally for weddings May - October. Literally, next door to the Inn at Valley Farms, is Alyson’s Orchard. With over 500 acres of rolling hills and apple orchards, Alyson’s is one of the most picturesque and well known wedding venues in the Monadnock region. Alyson’s Orchard is home to expansive landscapes with multiple outdoor ceremony sites. Couples may opt for a site overlooking the Connecticut River Valley, area farms, or choose from one of the Orchard’s scenic ponds. The indoor open concept reception area with deck overlooking a tree lined pond can accommodate 250 guests. With an atmosphere that feels more like a family estate than a typical wedding venue, Alyson’s provides an unlimited number of backdrop and photo opportunities for any wedding and is a virtual playground for wedding photographers. The rustic elegance and simple beauty of the orchard provides stunning surroundings and vibrant energy any time of year. w w w. nhweddi ngm agazi ne. com
39
In traditional orchard style, Alyson’s offers a wedding wagon powered by a John Deere tractor to transport guests to the wedding sites. And for the bride who truly wants to feel like a princess on her wedding day, a horse drawn apple cart featuring purebred Belgian horses, courtesy of Keene’s Stonewall Farm, is available for rental. Alyson’s also boasts an airstrip which can be utilized with prior approval. On site, homestyle lodging is available at Alyson’s Rochambeau Lodge, or the Foster Farmhouse. Lodging at Alyson’s Orchard accommodates up to 38 guests, and offers limited lodging for well behaved Canine companions. Emma & Ryan Dono travelled to New Hampshire in search of the ideal New England location for their wedding. Emma recalls her visit to Alyson’s, “As soon as we visited Alyson’s we realized that it was more than just your average apple orchard-- perched atop a hill amongst a gorgeous landscape with amazing views, it had a wonderful function hall that exceeded our expectations for having a “country elegant” style wedding, and it had houses right on the property where we could have our wedding party and close family and friends stay. Fran Imhoff, the event coordinator at Alyson’s, was another reason why we instantly fell in love with the spot-- she was so friendly, excited, and happy to work with us from day 1 until the big day, and she made wedding planning much less stressful.” Brides like Emma, may opt to have the best of both worlds, by securing lodging at Alyson’s and the Inn at Valley Farms. As a guest of the Inn, Emma was able to prepare for her big day in one of the Inn’s antique styled rooms and was also able to utilize the great barn, silos and other gorgeous locations for wonderful wedding portraits before her ceremony at Alyson’s. Newlyweds Emma & Ryan look forward to revisiting the place where their marriage began - “Walpole itself is very charming and has great character, we felt like this could be a special place for us to get married at and keep coming back for years to come.” Walpole, NH is located just miles from the Vermont Border, 120 miles from Boston, MA and Portsmouth, NH and 110 miles from Hartford, CT. Bridal Beauty
Step 2. Lena curls the rest of Morgan’s hair to give it body and texture before it is pinned up. While the look features a contrasting front and back, the braid and curled up do compliment each other. The effect is unique and modern. Morgan could also keep the hair in back down, which would be more appropriate for a casual day or beach wedding.

Photography: Aphrodite Wedding Photography Hair Stylist: Lena Hartford, Hair That Moves Makeup Artist: Joanne McDonough, Joya Beauty Location: Joya Beauty Makeup Studio, Dover, NH
Step 1. Morgan has asked for a trendy and fun hairstyle for her wedding day. Her wedding gown is one shoulder, and she wants her hair to compliment the dress neckline and style. Lena begins with a front braid along the hairline. It is a fresh and young look, and adding an up do will pull it together to create a more formal feel. 42
Step 3. Morgan’s hair is pinned up loosely. The trend in wedding hair is a more soft and relaxed version of the classic wedding hairstyles. Even though Morgan’s hair will be swept up, loose curls give the back an interesting visual as well as volume. Morgan will finish the look with a full-bloomed flower tucked in the side of her hair. A flower, or other hair accessory, keeps the hairstyle special after the wedding veil is taken off, if you are wearing one. Although you don’t want to look like a different person on your wedding day, this is your chance to stand out from your everyday look. Even if you wear your hair down, your style should look like it’s meant for an event, especially the biggest one of your life!
w w w.nhwe dd ingma g a zine .com
Step 2. Foundation and concealer are applied to smooth skin tone and create a flawless finish. Joanne often uses an airbrush to apply foundation the day of the wedding. The trend is towards dewy skin, rather than a flat matte finish, which an airbrush achieves. It creates an even layer, and the foundation will last the entire event. While you wouldn’t need airbrushed foundation for everyday wear, it is ideal for weddings. You will be confident that your photos will reflect a worry-free and polished bride.
Hair & Make-Up
Step 1. The first step is the application of eye shadow. It is applied before anything else because loose powder from the shadow will be covered up with foundation. Morgan has asked for a natural look, but would like to enhance her eyes. Mascara is added to make Morgan’s eyes stand out. The day of the wedding, false eyelashes are often recommended to create volume. Today’s faux lashes are natural looking, and easy to put on and wear. Most importantly, they will help your eyes stand out in photos. Also, when thinking of your wedding photos, don’t be afraid to wear a more makeup than you are used to. Makeup is meant to enhance the beauty of features, like eyes and lips, and a good makeup artist will help you achieve that effect.
Step 3. Morgan’s eyes are the focal point of her makeup look, so the lips are given a touch of color and gloss. The trend for lips is pinks and roses, with shiny gloss. Stay away from lipsticks that are too neutral, frosted, or deep in pigment. Gloss is an easy product to tuck in a small purse, and easy to touch up during your event.

Stephanie and Seth Freeman June 19, 2010
S
tephanie and Seth spend almost every weekend in the winter at Loon Mountain, as well as making many trips throughout the year to the Lincoln, NH destination. They love to hike, ski and simply explore the beautiful nature the White Mountains offer. Stephanie also teaches skiing as part of the New England Disabled Sports Program at Loon Mountain, and grew up hiking and skiing in Lincoln. Naturally, Loon Mountain was the perfect fit for the couple’s wedding celebration. While the mountains of Lincoln were the backdrop, the real theme of the wedding was bright colors and an atmosphere of fun! Stephanie and Seth’s cake resembled the wedding invitation, which was a mountain scene. The place cards were ski tickets, and the guest book was a pair of skis that guests could sign. The couples ketubbah, or Jewish marriage contract, also included mountains and nature. Seth’s step-father, who is also a rabbi performed the service, and used family heirlooms as part of the ceremony. It was a

perfect balance of tradition, ceremony and fun. The chuppah, also a special part of a Jewish wedding, was a gift from a family friend, which was a mountain scene hand-painted on silk and designed especially for the bride and groom. The wedding was really a weekend long celebration. Thursday night began with a family mini-golf tournament. Friday included a Welcome BBQ at Loon Mountain for all guests, followed by the wedding on Saturday night. It was a weekend to remember! The wedding was a combination of eclectic personalities and ancient traditions. The ceremony included both a Navajo water ceremony and the Jewish tradition of breaking the glass. Family and friends from around the country were on hand to celebrate with Amy and Jonathan. The couple wanted the event to be more of an east coast party that just happened to be a wedding. As with any great party, guests enjoyed great food and music, as well as an amazing sunset. Amy and Jonathan say that guests continue to comment on how much they enjoyed the party, and they are asking the couple to have another one! Best Wedding Reception
Picture your wedding reception as if it is
happening right now. What
three words would you choose to describe what you see?
If you truly want your guests to have fun at your reception, make them feel like they are an important part of your celebration instead of just bystanders,” begins Peter Merry, author of “The Best Wedding Reception…Ever!”, published by Sellers Publishing, Inc. Author and nationally known wedding entertainer, Peter Merry, offers couples more than 200 creative ways to personalize their wedding receptions in this new book. Drawn from his near 20 years of wedding experience, Merry also outlines all the information couples will need to: • Find the perfect reception location • Explore different entertainment vendors and find the right ones for their style • Involve the guests and highlight loved ones throughout the reception • Liven up the cocktail and dinner hour
• Personalize the wedding party’s grand entrance • Include memorable special dances • Combine traditional and modern elements into a cohesive reception • Plan an unforgettable last dance and sendoff • Enjoy this incredible event, and much more
The book is dived into three main sections. The first, Beginning Your Production, focuses on choosing the right time, finding the right place and selecting the right people to fill each role in the wedding party. The second section, Creating Your Timeline, helps couples to plan a reception that will flow smoothly and keep the guests entertained. The final section, Adding Your Personal Style, helps the bride and groom put their fingerprints on every page of the reception celebration so they know it was created especially for them. Interspersed throughout the book are profiles of real couples and how their creative choices and ideas made their reception celebrations not only fun, but also memorable and personally meaningful. Here are just a few highlights from the book to get you started thinking about your reception.
ENTERTAINMENT
56
w w w.nhwe dd ingma g a zine .com
Whether you choose a DJ or a band to provide music during your reception, make sure you have interview questions prepared that will leave you with an accurate assessment of each entertainment company. Reception music is more important than most people think. It can make your day feel like a world-class event, or amateur hour if you things go bad. Merry, who is also Director of his own entertainment company, Merry Weddings, Inc., knows what questions should be asked, besides the usual, “What is your rate?” Here is an example of some questions to ask bands during the interview process: 1. How will the band perform your special songs? 2. How many songs and genres can the band currently perform? 3. Can you see uncut video footage of the band making announcements at a wedding? 4. What responsibility will the band
take for directing the pacing and flow of your reception agenda? Here in New Hampshire, Bob and Nancy Fauci of Music Fantasy Weddings offer their own guide to creating unforgettable receptions. With over 25 years of DJ experience, the Fauci’s are experts in the do’s and don’ts of music and entertainment for weddings. They have compiled their experience, tips and advice into an e-report, which can be downloaded for free at www.mfwdj.com. Look for Bob’s top music picks each month on www.musicfantasyweddings.com, too!
DANCE FLOOR A critical component of assessing a venue is something most couples overlook. When considering your venue, look for a dance floor that can be centrally located. Why? Merry says, “A centrally located dance floor
is easy to access for dancing, is more accessible for guests who want to watch the traditional events, is convenient for the catering staff, and will go a long way towards making everyone feel more involved.”
THE GRAND ENTRANCE The entrance of the wedding party and bride and groom is always a highlight of the reception, and sets the tone for the event. Couples are taking the entrance to an all new level, and Merry has some incredible ideas for making it fun. Firstly, Merry says, you want to pick a song that will create energy. You can choose different songs for the wedding party, parents and couple, or keep it the same. Make sure the music provider has detailed instructions on where you want to start a song, or what part of a song you want emphasized.
It is customary for military wedings to use a saber arch as part of the grand entrance. Along those lines, the “wedding party can line up across from each other creating a pathway and hold long stem roses up high, creating an arch for the bride and groom’s entrance,” offers Reno based Wedding Entertainment Director, Larry Williams. As a surprise, Scott Faver, DJ trainer and wedding entertainer from Phoenix, suggests having the MC to instruct guests to grab their cameras, and when the couple enters, to swarm the couple and snap pictures as if the two are a hot Hollywood couple and the guests are the papparazi! The grand entrance is a great way to show guests the couple’s favorite pastimes and activities.
Make your Wedding day shine
• If you love baseball, the couple can throw baseballs, preferably toy plastic ones, to guests as they walk in. • If you are into scuba diving, the bride and groom can enter the reception wearing scuba masks and flippers. • If the bride and groom enjoy comedy, have either one of them or both pretend to trip as they walk in. Make sure to let the guests know it is ok to laugh, after!
The Best Wedding Reception… Ever! can be found in bookstores, wedding shops and gift shops nationwide and through Sellers Publishing’s Website, www.sellerspublishing.com.

Margaret and John Marshall August 28, 2010
M
argaret and John were in the unique position of having to plan their wedding from overseas. They did have help, however, from Margaret’s Mother, who lives in Maine. Once she stepped foot in The Colony Hotel in Kennebunkport, Maine, she said, “This is the place where you would want your daughter to get married.” The bride’s siblings agreed, and the accommodating event staff made the venue an easy pick for Margaret and John. The couple infused their wedding celebration with a mixture of past and present sentiments, as well as the color pink! Margaret and John gave their bridesmaids, mothers and grandmother pink parasols from Singapore, were the couple currently live. They also honored the people in their lives who had passed by lighting a memory candle during the ceremony while a guitarist sang, “In My Life” by the Beatles. The groom wore cufflinks and a belt given to him from his late grandfather. A family friend played bagpipes while guests were being seated for the ceremony and leaving for the reception. The bride had known the bagpiper since she was a little girl, and she was warmed by his heart-felt music. During cocktail hour, guests were offered a signature drink; a strawberry mojito. It was a beautiful shade of pink, and Margaret and John’s favorite drink in Singapore. Instead of a 60

typical guest book, an artist had drawn a tree and each guest was asked to place their fingerprint with name on the tree. It is now framed and hanging in the couple’s home. Unlike most weddings, the couple mixed up family and friends at tables so they had a chance to meet someone new and mingle. They kept couples together, but took time to think about who would enjoy each other’s company and have something in common to talk about. Also at the reception, guests enjoyed taking photos in a photo booth with fun props. It was a great way for guests to get comfortable and let loose.
