PRESIDENT’S LETTER

Welcome to this edition of The Call magazine of New Hope Christian College. NHCC is the most unique college I’ve ever been a part of. With a stellar “lab church” attached to its curriculum, the students gain over 1,600 hours of real-life practicum and hands-on learning. Our students are some of the most gifted and committed young leaders you will ever meet. Each student has heard the call of God, and they’ve responded by committing to a season of preparation. Elijah had the “School of the Prophets,” Paul had the “School of Tyrannus,” and we have New Hope Christian College. Each is designed with the same goal in mind—to build and equip exemplary Christian leaders with biblical character and eternal principles.

To develop our students, New Hope has amazing professors in Bible, Business, Creative Arts, Technology, Theology, and Ministry Leadership such as Dr. Donald Grafton, Aaron Cordeiro, Elaine Naulu, Dr. Guy Higashi, Chris Kiriakos, Steve Kenny, Peter Thourson, Cindy Kenny, Lori Higashi, Uilani Cordeiro, Gary Hisaoka, and so many others that bring our campus to life. This year has been filled with excitement, growth, mentorship, and transformational experiences that God will use in ways that will shape our students into tomorrow’s greatest leaders... starting today!

NEW HOPE CHURCH & COLLEGE

DEVELOPING HEARTS, MINDS, AND HANDS

Words: Dr. Wayne Cordeiro, Dr. Donald Grafton

New Hope “Church & College” is a joint venture that has the training of emerging leaders as one of its core values. For the NHCC students, New Hope West has become a “lab church” where they can gain real life experience and develop true ministry skills on a weekly basis. The majority of the students at New Hope Christian College have said yes to following the call to ministry, and most of those are engaged in New Hope West, a thriving church on campus. Recently planted only two years ago, NHW delivers the Gospel to over 1,300 each week in live attendance and 3,000 more on-line. Students gain biblical foundations at New Hope Christian College and real life experience at New Hope West.

The three major themes that lead the concentrations at NHCC are:

• Theology & Leadership

• Creative Arts

• Tech & Production

New Hope Christian College is a premier ministry training-ground. Students earn college credit as part of a practicum program. This opportunity combines the discipline of academic study with the practical experience that results in actual lives being touched by the Gospel.

"I am grateful to be a part of a community that values both academic excellence and hands-on ministry leadership. The dynamic between the church and college has allowed me to grow spiritually and practically as a Christian leader."
- Jazmine Grafton, Class of 2023

The results? In this last year alone:

• Over 530 people gave their lives to Jesus Christ for the first time.

• Ninety six people were baptized.

• Over 350 are engaged in volunteer ministry each week

Our NHCC students had the opportunity of a lifetime to be a part of planting and growing a 21st-century church that will not only reach their community but will also reach their generation with the call of Jesus. That “Call” is an invitation to become an exceptional ministry leader in these crucial times when our world is in need of the Gospel as never before!

4

THEOLOGY & LEADERSHIP CREATIVE ARTS

Theology and Leadership students like Emanuel Romero, a sophomore focusing on pastoral studies, make the most of mentored practical ministry opportunities by serving and speaking at local care facilities. Other pastoral students like Chris Vasquez and Kazuya Senoo translate messages into Spanish and Japanese. They also lead Life Groups, host online services, prepare people for baptism, and follow up on prayer requests. Students studying children’s education, such as Winnie Mears and Elise Smith get to serve in the NH Kidz ministry and lead Kidz classes.

TECH & PRODUCTION

Creative Arts student, Rhye Ruperti, a freshman focusing on music and worship, plays guitar for Sunday morning services, and teaches middle and high school students about the heart and art of worship in New Hope's Youth Worship Equip program. Teuila Lafi leads worship and performs in skits onstage while leading drama workshops in our New Hope West homeschool co-op. Other students like Nathan Kenny provide vocal performances that inspire worship and open hearts to receive the Gospel.

Tech and Production students remove distractions and increase the focus on the Gospel’s message through lights, multimedia, video and sound reinforcement. Shaloom John, a senior focusing his studies on sound engineering, operates the front of house soundboard. Additionally, students like Kaitlyn Coumerilh and Jazden Martinez train our team of high school students to run cameras, lights, visuals, and sound equipment. The next generation of emerging Christian leaders and New Hope students are getting a head start in ministry!

God’s Faithfulness in Saying “Yes”

One year ago, my family was living in Arizona when we crossed paths with Pastor Wayne Cordeiro, our pastor from my childhood in Hawaii. Upon hearing of my goal to study Creative Arts as an early high school graduate, he encouraged me to explore NHCC. After some research, we found that the program was exactly what I was looking for.

One month later when we visited in-person, we saw God moving, and knew we had to come. We believed God had a wonderful plan for our season here, but multiple obstacles arose: How would I pay for tuition? Since I'm only fifteen, would my family move with me?

Despite having unanswered questions, we knew God was calling us to New Hope, so we said, "Yes." Almost immediately, God showed Himself faithful. Our home sold quickly, allowing us to move to Eugene within three months. My family and our belongings arrived one week before the fall semester began, and through the generosity of donors, internships, and the provision of God, I enrolled as a full time student.

God made a place at New Hope for my family. I get to use my talents for the Lord while serving alongside classmates and mentors onstage, backstage, and in the children's ministry.

My parents have found community and ministries to serve and use their gifts. My two younger brothers serve with production and children's ministry while my younger sisters sing in Kids’ choir and learn about Jesus in this wonderful community.

Our lives have been completely transformed because of God's great work. It hasn't been easy, but God has proven His faithfulness time and time again. He is Jireh, our Provider. All we had to do was say, "Yes."

EARN WHILE YOU LEARN

HOW NHCC’S INTERNSHIP PROGRAM SUPPORTS STUDENTS’ FINANCIAL FREEDOM

New Hope Christian College is the perfect option for those wishing to further their studies in ministry and gain handson experience at the same time. Whether it be for a degree in pastoral studies or creative arts, the college’s tuition assistance program makes it possible for students to finance their education as they go. With scholarship and internship opportunities available, every student is equipped to dedicate their full attention to academics, ministry training, and practical application while becoming Kingdom leaders who are capable of advancing the church’s mission.

"There

are so many opportunities to get involved, serve, and lead in both the church and college! I was able to take the things I learned in class and practically apply it to the ministries I am involved in. I feel well equipped, prepared, and confident in regard to my future in ministry."

- Josiah Hernandez, Class of 2023

The New Hope West Internship gives students a one-of-akind opportunity to gain real-world knowledge in the realm of ministry. This provides students with a platform to be mentored and participate in a practicum where they can put their gifts to use and learn from experienced practitioners. Various ministry practicums are available that are tailored to each student’s field of study, including: children’s ministry, worship team, online ministry, graphic design, production and media, counseling, youth ministry, marriage and family ministry, and much more. After completing their studies, graduates can proudly display over 1,600 hours of practicum experience on their resumes, which is a significant advantage that cannot be gained from a regular classroom setting. New Hope Christian College strives to provide a biblical and multidimensional leadership experience that provides a solid foundation for the future.

Future

TODAY YOUR is

Where will you be five or ten years from now? What kind of person do you want to be? Each of us has a preferred future in our imagination:

• A great marriage and healthy family

• A satisfying vocation or job that provides more than enough to fulfill all your financial goals

• A spiritual health that gives you the confidence of God’s favor

But close your eyes and think of what you will be like in five or ten years if you continue to procrastinate? Where would you be if you left everything to chance? Where would you be if you remained lazy and did nothing?

Think about what your life will look like in five or ten years.

• How much debt would you be in?

• How many jobs would you have been fired from?

• How much weight have you put on?

• What would your marriage look like?

• How would you feel about a shallow faith?

If you left everything as it is, all these will be tomorrow’s reality, and tomorrow will arrive before you know it! Remember: if you don’t pursue your dreams with action, it’s not a dream. It’s a hallucination.

Throughout the Bible, I have seen that the smartest and strongest aren’t always the ones who attain fulfilled lives. I know some very smart people stuck in the mud of procrastination.

8

In fact, it seems like the most basic requirement for God’s blessing is one thing: A willingness to act; to step forward. It’s a person who fills out an application, who sends an email to ask for help, who signs up for a class or clinic.

It was only three months after I became a Christian that I applied to Eugene Bible College (now New Hope Christian College).

• I made a phone call

• I paid a fee

• I gave my notice to the apartment I was renting in Portland

Nothing was guaranteed, but I launched my boat! I didn’t have a job yet in Eugene, but I acted on my dream. I wanted to be used by God, and I knew I needed preparation, maturity, examples of faith, and more knowledge of God’s Word. So, I made a commitment that would shape my future.

Now it is today … and my today was once my yesterday’s future. I can now look back and see that it all became reality because of action, not procrastination. Step into your future, and with each step, your future will no longer be a pipe dream. It will be a dream fulfilled.

“I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “Plans not for your calamity, but for your welfare, that you might have a future and a hope!”

- Jeremiah 29:11

CAMPUS UPGRADES

Words: Dr. Erika Funk, Elaine Naulu

New Hope Christian College is a place of excellence. As we work to reflect the excellence of God in every aspect of life at NHCC, our goal is to invest in and upgrade our campus to enrich our students’ experience.

Over the last year, teams from the College and the New Hope West women’s ministry collaborated to revitalize areas of the campus starting with the women’s dorm, Hornshuh Hall. Floors were replaced, walls painted, lighting brightened, and access to technology was enhanced. Updates to furnishings in the common areas and prayer tower make the dorm a place where students can truly do life together.

Bryan Hall also got a facelift with a renovated cement ramp and brand new carpet. In our gym and auditorium, the eleven-yearold sound system was replaced with a state-of-the-art Adamson S10 audio system that provides an upgraded student practicum experience.

The environment at NHCC now better matches our heart for our students and community and reflects our heart to steward the gift of this beautiful campus.

“The renovations in the girls’ dorm create a warm atmosphere that feels like home. The new flooring and light-up mirrors made a big difference. With the updates, the girls are getting together more and building community.”

10

At New Hope Christian College, we believe the power of community is essential to our success. What better way to engage with each other than by exploring all that Eugene and its beautiful surroundings have to offer! From hiking in the majestic Cascade Mountains or enjoying a beach day on the white sand beaches of the Pacific Coast, there's something for every NHCC student throughout their college journey.

In the summer, NHCC students love to engage in a number of activities all around Eugene and the greater Willamette Valley. Those seeking adventure will find over 154 lakes in Lane County and more hiking and biking trails than you can count. Not far away in Eastern Oregon, incredible whitewater rafting and other outdoor experiences await.

A GAME-CHANGING GOLF TOURNAMENT

A sunny day of golf at Emerald Valley Golf Course proved an outstanding success as New Hope Christian College's annual Classic Golf Tournament raised over $85,700 for student scholarships! On August 26, 2022, over 25 sponsors joined 97 enthusiastic golfers and 40 hardworking students on the links in a morning filled with friendly competition and fellowship. As golfers arrived, they were welcomed by coffee and light breakfast, along with music from our talented student band - setting the perfect backdrop for this incredible event with the common goal of supporting future generations.

The purpose of our annual New Hope Classic Golf Tournament is to provide money for our student scholarships. Sometimes our best students need a little financial help in paying for the training they need to fulfill their calling. These scholarships have kept learning affordable for students who are called to serve!

During the tournament, scholarship recipients had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the exciting atmosphere while giving back and serving in various roles. They took on responsibilities such as photography, videography, event coordination, snack crew on golf carts, set-up and tear-down, and administrative tasks.

This hands-on experience allowed them to actively contribute to the success of the event and build connections with generous donors who believe in their calling and invest in the future of the Church.

Our 2023 New Hope Classic is scheduled for Friday, August 25. If you want to invest in the next generation by sponsoring or playing in our 2023 tournament, please email golf@newhope.edu

EASTER 2023

At New Hope Christian College

,we don’t just like to just learn about glorifying God, we like to do it! We believe that the harvest is plentiful, and there is no better time than now to bring hearts and minds to the Lord.

Through our lab church, New Hope West, students are able to take the skills they learn and put them to work in the ministry field. This Easter, our students served with excellence and passion in every aspect of New Hope West, reaching almost 4,000 people who came to our six services!

EASTER 2023

NHCC offers a unique approach to ministry education that places handson learning at the center of what we do, and this Easter was no exception. From start to finish, our students not only performed in, but also helped to imagine our Easter service featuring four powerful dramatic presentations, five original videos filmed and edited by our very own students, and eleven musical numbers! It was a truly special weekend of evangelism, and NHCC students were at the center of the action, every step of the way.

14

Words: Jared Vaughn

In addition to serving on our Evangelism Team, our students were also deeply involved in every Experience team at New Hope West, such as the Shuttle Ministry, Kidz, Hospitality, and more! Part of what sets New Hope West apart is that every person who comes on Sunday isn’t just part of our congregation, they’re part of our family! Our Experience Team is an integral part of that, and our students had an incredible opportunity to put their education to work, touching the lives of every person who came through our doors on Easter!

We're thrilled to celebrate the fifty lives that God saved and the countless hearts he renewed at New Hope West this Easter. We're also ever grateful for the partnership between New Hope Church and College, which provides our students with an incredible ministry environment that prepares them to serve as the hands and feet of Jesus in our world!

“Easter at NHW was a transformative journey of cultivating deep-rooted relationships and doing ministry alongside friends and mentors. It provided the perfect platform to apply what I've learned in class and minister the best way I can, through serving!”
