PREVENTING CAVITIES NATURALLY When people present with tooth decay to our office, we just don't drill fill and dismiss. We focus on reversing and preventing cavities so that our patients are free of dental decay for a life-time. We have put together a tooth decay prevention protocol based on the latest research and prevention methods. First, let's understand how cavities form. In order to get tooth decay, 3 things are needed; Teeth, Plaque, and Sugar. Bacteria: Our mouth is full of bacteria! In a healthy mouth, there are over 800 species of symbiotic (good) bacteria. Just like our intestines, bacteria are necessary for normal function. A change in the bacterial micro-flora is responsible for disease. Some bacteria infect our teeth and cause cavities, some infect our gums and jaw bone and cause gum disease. Thorough brushing and flossing removes the daily buildup of plaque on our teeth. If you are missing certain areas, we will inform you at your check-ups and help to improve your plaque removal techniques. Sugar: is what bacteria need to eat in order to produce the acid that they use to dissolve our teeth, causing cavities. For 240,000 years we lived as hunters and gatherers and were essentially cavity free. About 10,000 years ago, we began farming and our diets drastically changed. We began eating more starchy and processed food and tooth decay became a worldwide epidemic. The main problem is refined carbohydrates. You can either return to a hunter-gatherer way of eating (meats, vegetables, and seasonal fruits and nuts), or focus on prevention. Our approach consists of 2 parts: reducing tooth decay causing bacteria levels in our mouth, as well as reestablishing a healthy bacterial micro flora in our mouth and making our teeth more resistant to acid and tooth decay.

Controlling the bad bacteria Proper brushing and flossing: Daily removal of dental plaque is a must. Using an electric toothbrush like the Oral B Triumph with its small head that can reach the back wisdom teeth is a great option for those that have a high gag reflex. We highly recommend this toothbrush and sell it at our office for your convenience. We also recommend shred free floss, like Glide, which makes the flossing process a lot easier. Water picks and other water (flossing) devices do not remove plaque and are therefore the least effective tooth cleaning modality (unless you use ozonated water). You can use them if you like as long as you BRUSH and FLOSS first! Xylitol: This is a natural sugar that has been proven to reduce decay-causing bacteria levels in the mouth and prevent cavities. The best gum and mints that have this active ingredient is Zellies. No other product on the market has the same adequate levels of Xylitol. We offer this product at our office and both patient and staff are fans. Please visit www.zellies.com for more information. Studies show that consuming 7-10 grams of Xylitol a day greatly reduces tooth decay. Its best taken after meals. Some brands that contain 1 gram of Xylitol per piece are Zellies, Spry, and Epic. Ozonated Water Rinses: Ozone specifically kills single celled organism such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites and prions. Investing in a home water ozone generator is a good idea. Most can be bought on amazon.com or ebay.com for under $100. If you have an irrigator such as a Waterpick or Hydrofloss, ozonated water can be used in these

by Dr. Alex Shvartsman DDS, MAGD, AIOAMT

devices as a very effective and inexpensive irrigation liquid. Ozonated water is nontoxic, leaves no toxic by-products and can be used additionally to clean your produce, and your kitchen countertops. Oral Probiotics: Reestablishing a healthy symbiotic micro-flora in your mouth is very important. We recommend powdered probiotics, not pills, so that you introduce good bacteria into your mouth as well as your intestines. Look for probiotics specific for the mouth.

Making Teeth More Decay Resistant and Natural Cavity Healing (Reminerilization) Fluoride: A natural mineral that, when applied to teeth directly (topically), helps to reduce cavities and creates decay resistant outer layers on our teeth. Topically applied fluoride does not penetrate the gums and skin of the mouth to any clinical significant amounts so it has no bad systemic effects. Systemic fluoride (the type you ingest) is what is harmful and what you read about. Do not confuse this with topically applied fluoride. Amorphous Calcium Phosphate: Recaldent and Novamin are two brands of Amorphous Calcium Phosphate, the building blocks of teeth. MI Paste and (Recaldent) Renew (Novamin) both reduce sensitivity and reverse early cavities through a different mechanism than fluoride. Unfortunately, both pastes are only available through a dentist. Vitamin K2: First discovered by Weston Price, DDS in the early 1900 (Factor X) this important vitamin is missing from our food supply and needs to be supplemented. Vitamin K2 is involved in calcium distribution in our body. It helps to place calcium in your bones and teeth while scrubbing calcium from your blood vessels and tartar. So Vitamin K2 is good for your cardiovascular, bone and tooth health. It is naturally found in the fat of grass fed animals. Tooth Healthy Diet: If you want to reduce tooth decay, cut the carbs! Today, we consume sugar and carbohydrates in enormously unnatural amounts. This is completely different than the diet we are designed to eat. The optimal human diet is high fat, moderate protein, and low carbohydrates. Eliminate all grains, legumes, sugar-containing dairy and processed sugar. Eat REAL FOOD, preferably localDr. Golan Dr. Shvartsman ly grown, in season, organic and non-GMO. FAT: The Missing Nutrient in Acne Just when I think I am figuring out the human body, it finds ways to surprise me. A few of my most difficult patients have turned out to be my own kids. They really are here to teach me. Recently, I had a 7 month-long struggle with acne in my 13 year-old. He is the kind of kid that is very perfectionistic in his studies, his hobbies, his sports and yes, his looks. So, it was quite a frustrating struggle for both of us to try and solve this. What would happen is that when I went through the vitamins, he would get a bit of improvement, we would be happy and then he would get a relapse and we would be sad. His message to me was basically that as a naturopathic doctor with almost 20 years of experience I should be able to help him. I must say that I thought the same thing, especially having worked with this so many times and been successful. When I ran out of vitamins and minerals, and homeopathic medicines, and herbal medicines, and all the topical approaches, etc, etc, then we both gave up and made an appointment with the dermatologist. We were prescribed and agreed to try a synthetic vitamin A that dries up the oil glands. We were very knowledgeable consumers and the doctor was absolutely great. We knew there was a risk of sideeffects, but that this was mainly at high doses three or four times what my son would take. Well four days after starting the medicine, he got the worst flu, and was as sick as he had ever been. Not only that, but the sickness looked like one of the rare side-effects that you could get from the medicine that included swelling of the brain. He was sick for a solid seven days. As you can imagine, not a fun week for either of us. But even worse, after being so sick and just starting to feel better, his acne started coming back! So, we actually decided to start the medicine again even after all of this. Well four days later, he told me he was having muscle pains that did not feel normal. So, we got some laboratory testing done and he was having a condition where he was getting abnormal breakdown of his muscle tissue, also a rare side-effect of the drug.

So obviously, we were done with that drug in spite of the promise that it held to stop his acne. I don’t think at any point our decisions were not logical. It made sense to try the vitamins and minerals first, and given that amount of stress his skin was creating for him, it made sense to try the synthetic vitamin A. But clearly, the drug was not our answer. Whether it was inspiration or desperation, or a little of both, I began to think about the problem. The first question I asked myself was what was in the oil that is produced by the oil glands in the skin? What I found out was the oil is made up of a few different things. Triglycerides and fatty acids account for the predominant proportion of substance in the oils. Wait...what is it about fatty acids making up a lot of the oils in the skin? Aren’t there some things called essential fatty acids? Honestly, it has been a weak area for me in my knowledge. I had never seen great responses to the various oils I had tried for myself, my kids, and my clients. So after a few disappointing trials, I figured it was just one of those natural medicine concepts that was over sold and under performed. I have seen a few of those. As I continued to read, it turns out there is one oil that is deficient in the skin of those kids that are more susceptible to acne. The name of that oil is Linoleic (pronounced Lin-o-lay-ic) acid. This oil is an essential fatty acid that our body is not able to produce! I guess that this would be the “essential” part of essential fatty acid. This means that we are no more able to create this oil than we are to produce vitamin C. I have to admit that I never put that concept together before. I was not completely ignorant about oils even though the paragraph above may indicate differently. I gave my kids a spoonful of flax seed oil so I figured I was at least covering my bases with the oils. It turns out that flax oil may induce a deficiency of linoleic acid. This is because flax is very high in what are called omega 3 fatty acids and relatively low in omega 6 fatty acids, one of which is linoleic acid. When I started supplementing my son’s diet with good sources of linoleic acid, he has had great results with the new approach.

You Want to Know How Long You’ll Live? I’ll Tell You But first answer me this question: Whether you live to be 80, 90, or even a hundred, isn't the quality of your life as important as the length of your life? Of course! With that in mind, isn't sad that so many people endure life filled with physical pain, when life is so beautiful and meant to be enjoyed in perfect, pain-free health? But what can these people do? What can you do if you're one of them? I know it may sometimes feel hopeless. You may be suffering from back pain, carpal tunnel, neck pain, headaches, or worse. The problem might have just started recently, or it could be chronic, and has been hampering your life for months or years. The good news is that there is a solution! Let me introduce myself and tell you how this is possible. My name is Dr. Ray Omid, and I am a holistic Chiropractor in Garden City. Over the years, I've been fortunate enough to have over 20,000 people come see me for many different reasons. At first, these people are usually wary, scared, and skeptical. And of course, this is perfectly natural. I know I was. The first time I went to a holistic doctor, I was terrified. I might get hurt while I was being "adjusted," or that the doctor might not pay attention to me, or that it might not work or that it would cost too much, and on and on and on. Needless to say, my fears were completely unfounded. The doctor who treated me did such a great job that I decided to become a holistic Chiropractor and help people just like I was helped! But here's the question-what will you do? Will you go through life enduring unnecessary pain and suffering or you will take action and enjoy the beauty of life-healthy and pain free? I think you'll pick the latter and that's why I am going to make you this offer...If you would like to find a solution once and for all, call Bessi at (917) 747-2795 and make an appointment today for a consultation, com-

puterized exam and review of findings for only $20 ($400 value). We offer same day appointments, and accept some insurance plans. Sooner than you think, you can be living life with ease. Before I forget, this offer is only valid until March 31, 2014. There is absolutely no obligation for future care. Research-Based Exercise Prescription: High Intensity Interval Training Part 5 What do band aids, jello and Q-tips have in common? Well, unless you keep your gelatin dessert in your medicine cabinet, the answer is that they are all words we use to describe a general type of product that is marketed by different companies. For example, if you clip your finger between dumbbell and rack the next time you are at the gym (been there, done that, by the way) and ask for a band aid, it’s a sure bet you’ll receive what you need — a thin adhesive bandage that you can use to cover the wound. However, the “band aid” they give you might not be a Band-Aid. Confused? Here’s the deal. Band_Aid is actually a trademarked name for a line of adhesive bandages produced by Johnson & Johnson. In fact, an employee of the healthcare giant invented the product in 1920. But somewhere between then and now, “band aid” became a generic descriptor for all similar products such that we now use the term liberally with no recognition of its true meaning. In prior installments, I documented a growing body of research which suggests that a “new” type of exercise is appropriate for everyone from athlete to cardiovascular patient. This exercise is called high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and as a description, the name fits because HIIT involves intense bouts of exertion performed intermittently with rest or low-intensity intervals interspersed. The intermittent nature of the protocol is the key because the periodic “recovery” intervals allow for much higher work rates to be performed during “work” intervals compared to sessions where one constant level of work is sustained, which is what traditional endurance protocols involve. Consequently, HIIT allows the exerciser to take endurance training to a higher level and, ultimately, that’s what makes it both effective and time efficient. Research suggests that HIIT is the way to go and its popularity is definitely on the rise. However, much like the descriptors mentioned above, “HIIT” is used far more liberally “in the field” and the end result is that a lot of people are performing highintensity interval training that is far from HIIT. The important distinction is that HIIT that has been empirically established comprises traditional endurance exercises done in this atypical manner. For example, the study I documented by Currie et al. had cardiac patients perform HIIT on a stationary cycle, which is a form of endurance exercise that has been around for a century longer than the Band Aid! So, the novel aspect of HIIT is not the exercise itself, but the way it is performed. In a traditional sense, endurance exercise involves continuous work at a sustainable work rate somewhere between HIIT work and recovery extremes. The classic example is jogging, which became a craze in the ‘70s with people running for hours up and down

MARCH 2014 1-800-NEW LIVING by Dr. Fred DiMenna, Ph.D., C.S.C.S.

city streets at the same sustainable pace. It is, therefore, not surprising that many HIIT studies have used running as the mode of exercise and other traditional endurance activities including rowing, swimming and stair stepping are also appropriate candidates. But the bottom line is that only these types of endurance exercises (i.e., exercises that require rhythmic contractions of a large number of muscles and/or larger muscles of the body for an extended period) are HIIT alternatives when this type of training is considered in the research-based sense of the term. Conventional endurance exercise should be used for HIIT because the stimulus is still designed to provide an “aerobic” overload. In other words, despite the fact that work intervals are performed above the highest rate of aerobic metabolism, the end result is that positive adaptations occur in the aerobic system. In addition to health benefits, these adaptations also convey the ability to sustain higher rates of work aerobically in the future, which is why a marathon runner who wants to improve the speed at which he can jog for extended periods should devote some of his training to this type of exercise. For example, to complete a marathon in three hours, a runner must maintain a pace of approximately nine miles-per-hour. But running at that speed for longer than three hours will do little to improve this limitation. Instead, the high-intensity work intervals of HIIT allow much higher work rates to be maintained albeit for far shorter periods. This is what stresses the aerobic system and creates the stimulus that improves its capacity and with that improvement comes the health-related changes that have been documented in the literature. In the true sense of the word (and, more importantly, the research-supported sense), HIIT involves traditional endurance exercise performed in an untraditional way. Conversely, if you consider the term in its literal sense, high-intensity interval training can be any type of high intensity exercise performed intermittently. For example, traditional resistance training is done in sets with rest periods between, which means it is interval training. What is more, each set should be performed at a relatively high intensity (for example, moving a weight you can raise and lower for no more than two minutes at a time). However, traditional resistance training is definitely not HIIT nor are many of the exercise protocols that are being represented as such in practice.

The Ecstasy of Surrender Review by Caroline Myss The Ecstasy of Surrender: 12 Surprising Ways Letting Go Can Empower Your Life (Harmony Books, 2014) is the perfect book to come along at the perfect time!. I couldn’t put it down! Judith Orloff MD, a UCLA psychiatrist and beloved intuitive healer, masterfully explores how the power of letting go allows you to achieve personal and spiritual freedom. Combining mainstream medicine and beyond, Dr. Orloff blows apart old ideas about heath, aging, sex, power, beauty, and money by showing that surrender is NOT defeat—it is the missing key to true success. She defines surrender as the grace of knowing when to flow with life rather than fighting it or pushing so hard you sabotage yourself. This daring book is filled with a wealth of practical strategies to help you listen to your intuition more deeply and surrender to the wisdom of your body and the guidance of spirit—even when your ego wants to force things or when you’re overwhelmed by fear. I especially love the section on surrendering in relationships—how to surrender to love and let go of obsessive and “delusional” relationships which stand in the way of love. Also you’ll learn the art of setting boundaries with toxic people and practice the mantra: “no is a complete sentence.” The great miracle of surrender is that you can live in the passionate zone of the heart and gain deep faith in yourself and the divinity of your life. Dr. Orloff writes, "If you're like me-someone who wants to become everything you were meant to be and more-surrender is a doorway in," Savor the wisdom and joy that jumps off of the pages. Return to these lessons again and again over a lifetime. Let this book be your friend and companion as you embark on the exciting adventure of surrender. Caroline Myss is the New York Times bestselling author of Anatomy of the Spirit, medical intuitive, mystic, and international workshop leader.

EMPATHIC ILLNESS: Do You Absorb Other People’s Symptoms? Adapted from The Ecstasy of Surrender: 12 Surprising Ways Letting Go Can Empower Your Life (Harmony Books, 2014) Empathic illnesses are those in which you manifest symptoms that are not your own. Many patients have come to me labeled "agoraphobic" with panic disorders, chronic depression, fatigue, pain, or mysterious ailments that respond only partially to medications or psychotherapy. Some were nearly housebound or ill for years. They'd all say, "I dread being in crowds. Other people's anger, stress, and pain drain me, and I need a lot of alone time to refuel my energy." When I took a close history of all these patients I found that they were what I call "physical empaths:" people whose bodies are so porous they absorb the symptoms of others. I relate because I am one. Physical empaths do not have the defenses that others have to screen things out. As a psychiatrist, knowing this significantly changed how I treated these patients. My job became teaching them to center and protect themselves, set healthy boundaries, and let go of energy they picked up from others. To determine if you are a physical empath take the following quiz: Have I been labeled as overly sensitive or a hypochondriac? Have I ever sat next to someone who seemed nice but suddenly my eyelids got heavy and I felt like taking a nap? Do I feel uneasy, tired, or sick in crowds and avoid them? Do I feel someone else's anxiety or physical pain in my body? Do I feel exhausted by angry or hostile people? Do I run from doctor to doctor for medical tests, but I'm told "You're fine." Am I chronically tired or have many unexplained symptoms Do I frequently feel overwhelmed by the world and want to stay home? If you answered "yes" to 1-3 questions, you are at least part empath. Responding yes to 4 to 5 questions indicates you have moderate degree of physical empathy. 6 to 7 "yeses" indicate you have a high degree of empathy. Eight yeses indicate you are a full-blown empath. Discovering that you are a physical empath can be a revelation. Rest assured: You are not crazy. You are not a malingerer or hypochrondriac. You are not imagining things, though your doctor might treat you like a nuisance. You are a sensitive person with a gift that you must develop and successfully manage.

2. Move away. When possible, distance yourself by at least twenty feet from the suspected source. See if you feel relief. Don't err on the side of not wanting to offend strangers. In a public place, don't hesitate to change seats if you feel a sense of "dis-ease" imposing on you. 3. Know your vulnerable points. Each of us has a body part that is more vulnerable to absorbing others' stress. Mine is my gut. Scan your body to determine yours. Is it you neck? Do you get sore throats? Headaches? Bladder infections? At the onset of symptoms in these areas, place your palm there and keep sending lovingkindness to that area to soothe discomfort. 4. Surrender to your breath. If you suspect you are picking up someone else's symptoms, concentrate on your breath for a few minutes. This is centering and connects you to your power. 5. Practice Guerilla Meditation. To counter emotional or physical distress, act fast and meditate for a few minutes. Do this at home, at work, at parties, or conferences. Or, take refuge in the bathroom. If it's public, close the stall. Meditate there. Calm yourself. Focus on positivity and love. 6. Set healthy limits and boundaries. Control how much time you spend listening to stressful people, and learn to say "no." Remember, "no" is a complete sentence. 7. Visualize protection around you. Visualize an envelope of white light around your entire body. Or with extremely toxic people, visualize a fierce black jaguar patrolling and protecting your energy field against intruders. 8. Develop X ray vision. The spaces between the vertebrae in your lower back (lumbar spine) are conducive to eliminating pain from the body. It's helpful to learn to mindfully direct pain out of these spaces by visualizing it leaving your body. Say goodbye to pain as it blends with the giant energy matrix of life! 9. Take a bath or shower. A quick way to dissolve stress is to immerse yourself in water. My bath is my sanctuary after a busy day. It washes away everything from bus exhaust to long hours of air travel to pesky symptoms I have taken on from others. Soaking in natural mineral springs divinely purifies all that ails. Keep practicing these strategies. By protecting yourself and your space, you can create a magical safe bubble around you that nurtures you, while simultaneously driving negative people away. Don't panic if you occasionally pick up pain or some other nasty symptom. It happens. With strategies I discuss in my book to surrender other people's symptoms, you can have quicker responses to stressful situations. This A Survival Guide for Empaths: 9 Strategies To Stop Absorbing Other People's will make you feel safer, healthier, and your sensitivities can blossom. When I moved to San Diego, I weighed 160 pounds. That is 40 more than I weigh today! I lost the weight and I have never put that weight back on. Where did you grow up, go to school, etc. Do you make a sole living from fitness or do you do anything else... I was born and raised in North Dakota and I live in San Diego now. My UFIT workouts are ideal for a busy schedule and getting fast results. The workouts are all designed to help you burn calories and sculpt your body in a short amount of time. Any charities/organizations/activism you are passionate about? My husband Mike Whitmarsh (my girls’ father), passed away 4 years ago. SUPERIOR RESULTS THROUGH A TEAM APPROACH TO HOLISTIC HEALTH In the past fifty years, there have been great changes in the practice and procedures of traditional Western (also known as Allopathic) medicine. As general practitioners, specialists, and surgeons became medical groups, in place of their private practices, patients found that they now had a team of doctors to treat them in one location. At the Holistic Health and Anti-Aging Center of Great Neck we have a team approach to Holistic Health Care. Very often a patient will come for a nutritional consultation and find that they can also benefit from a session of massage, Jin Shin Jyutsu(r), Gua Sha, or Amma Therapy. As Individual practitioners of healing work, we are united in the concept of the integration of body, mind, and spirit. Our many years of experience in our fields and with each others' work allow us to offer a team approach to a patient's wellbeing. Our founders and colleagues have worked together for almost twenty years. Last year we combined our resources and talents to create The Holistic Health and Anti-Aging Center of Great Neck. Our healing staff members are: * Dr. Joseph Debé, DC, DACBN, CDN, is a Board Certified Nutritionist. He offers in-depth health evaluation through state of the art laboratory testing for nutritional deficiencies, food allergies, gluten sensitivity, toxicity, parasites, yeast and bacteria, and more. He is the first doctor in New York State to utilize Salivary Adrenal Hormone testing. He is the author of "The Ultimate Creatine Handbook" and over 50 articles on health and nutrition which are available on www.DrDebe.com. His planning utilizes a combination of diet, exercise, and tailored nutrition to improve a wide variety of conditions. * Michael Harris, LMT, NCTMB, holds graduates diplomas from The New College of Health Professions, formerly The Wholistic Center for Health, Education, and Research, in Syosset, NY and The Somerset School of Massage in Somerset, NJ. He is a certified Neuromuscular therapist, and certified in therapeutic body work by The National Board. He treats pain that results from biochemical reaction as well as physical trauma. Stress reduction is a feature of his work. He says that, "Stress causes the body to release a hormone, cortisol, which tightens muscle fibers causing them to stick together and produce adhesions. Therapeutic massage can stimulate circulatory and lymphatic flow, relieve adhesion, lower blood pressure, and provide relief and comfort." * Dr. Judith Gormandy, LMT, L Ac, holds graduates diplomas from The

New College of Health Professions in Syosset, NY. She practices Amma massage therapy, an acupressure treatment that follows the model of Traditional Chinese Medicine. In her work the flow of energy from Heaven to Earth is mirrored in the treatment of energy pathways that move with the seasons of our Earth. "In this period, the start of Spring, after being cold, congealed, and stiffened from Winter, our bodies need to be prompted to reawaken. Like tilling the soil for planting in Spring, we can revive our systems with Amma Therapy." * Judy Johnson, LMT, is a graduate of The New College of Health Professions in Syosset, NY. She is a practitioner of Jin Shin Jyutsu, the Japanese Art of balancing the energies within our complete beings. The therapist's hands are used in the same way that jumper cables are used to charge a car's battery. It reduces stress and pain by restoring balance and inner harmony. When asked about the power of Jin Shin Jyutsu, Judy explains, "The Healing Art of Jin Shin Jyutsu has limitless possibilities and applications. You may come to a treatment looking for help in one area and find that other areas benefited from the session. Why does this happen? I don't really know. The best explanation for this phenomenon is that there are relationships between our physical, mental, and spiritual selves. The restorative benefits of a single Jin Shin Jyutsu session can be felt for up to 48 hours. Also, the effects of treatment, like exercise, are cumulative. Each session builds on the last. * Marie Iovino, LMT, is a graduate of the Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences in New York, NY. Her techniques to treat sports and rehabilitation patients emphasize restoration of neuromuscular function through stretch and compression. She also practices Gua Sha Neck and Facial rejuvenation, a 4,000 year-old technique to wipe stress, strain, and fatigue away from the face and neck. * Liz Sbar, LMT, is a graduate of the Florida School of Massage in Gainesville, FL as well as the Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences in New York, NY. Her skills include deep tissue bodywork, The Bach Flower Remedy program, postural integration, and "Vitaflex", a rolling acupressure technique. She has extensive experience working with seniors to relieve the effects of aging. She explains that, "By focusing on strength and balance with QiGong, which translates as "Energy work", the patient can improve mobility and endurance. SELF EMPLOYED? WAYS TO AVOID BURN-OUT Are you self-employed? Is your business wearing you out or causing you frustration and anxiety? Does it take quite a while for you to recover from stressful situations? Do you feel burned out, depleted, and unproductive having lost most of the joy and excitement that used to be present when you first started your business? If so, you are not alone. By becoming more resilient, you will not get bogged down by the downs and you will be able to move upward and be where you want to be. As a business owner, you do not have a problem making decisions. But sometimes, those decisions don't always pan out as expected. Without beating yourself up, accept 100% responsibility for your actions and avoid being blame-oriented; learn the lessons in your journey so you can keep moving onward and upward. After the initial reflection period, choose not to ruminate on things that don't work or get sidetracked by negative self-talk. Here are four easy tips on how to build resiliency to overcome the burn-out, anxiety and disillusionment associated with running your own business: 1. Retrain Your Brain To Be Flexible, Focused And Solution-Based Building a resilient mindset is about visioning and implementing a plan of action. At the same time, it requires the ability to adapt to frustrations and setbacks. When confronted with a situation beyond your control or where you have erred in judgment, bring your mind back to your action plan. This will continually enable you to attract what you want into your life. Also demonstrate humility when you are wrong and become a life-long learner. Be a problem-solver, an understanding ally, helper and consultant to your clients rather than just a sales person meeting their quota. Action Steps: What is my vision for my business? What are my important revenue goals for the coming year? In what ways am I showing care and kindness toward myself as well as my clients? Write a "To Do" list for the following day before I leave work 2. Thrive with Courage And Commitment To Providing Quality Services Or Products You decided to go into business to play the game your way.You envisioned creating a better life for yourself and your customers. To do this, you will need to regularly focus on your ideal client and their needs. Being complacent will lose business. Examine current trends to anticipate and cater to the future needs of your clients. Time spent in planning now will save you time, energy and money next year.

MARCH 2014 1-800-NEW LIVING

yoga profile hamptons style: COLLEEN SAIDMAN YEE Where were you born and raised, and where do you live now? I was born in Corning, New York, and moved to Bluffton, Indiana, when I was eight. I moved to New York City in 1979, and now live in Sag Harbor, New York. I'll be spending more time in the city very soon, with a second Yoga Shanti studio opening on 24th Street in a few weeks. How did you get into yoga? My friend Kathy Law Preston dragged me kicking and screaming to a yoga class in 1987. I was a jock, and had no interest in stretching. Now, if someone calls yoga "stretching," I know they have no idea what it is. What style of yoga do you practice? Where were you trained and who were your teachers? I was originally trained in the Jivamukti method by Sharon Gannon and David Life, in 1998. In 2001, I started studying with my husband, Rodney Yee, and his orientation was much more Iyengar. I now teach a combination of both mixed with whatever I am exploring on my own mat at home. Please describe how you and Rodney Yee met, and how you make the relationship work considering you both have demanding schedules. I met Rodney in 1999, at Jivamukti. I didn't like his personality; I thought he was a peacock. I actually left his class after ten minutes. Then a couple of years later, a friend wanted to take his class at a conference, and I agreed to go with her. I learned so much that day that I decided to do a teacher training with him. The rest is sort of history. Now, we teach on the road together most of the time. I don't think it would work for us if we were always teaching in different parts of the world. What do you do on a daily basis-physically, mentally, spiritually-to stay fit? We do pranayama every morning before we look at our phones. If I'm teaching, I go to the room in our house where we do yoga, and I practice. I think the practice is much more authentic and translates to the students much more easily if it's coming from my body. If I'm not teaching, then Rodney usually is, so I take his class. We always take each other's classes. What is your diet like (vegan, GF, whole foods, etc)? I am a gluten-free vegetarian who tries to stay away from sugar. Do you take supplements? If so, what? I just started taking calcium/magnesium. I'm at that age where it's important for bone health. And I take vitamin D in the winter. Describe your philosophy of wellness. My philosophy of wellness is to not be around people who drain your energy. Luxuriate in the bathtub. Drink a green juice a day so you don't feel guilty about that bag of potato chips. Sleep is the most important component to wellness for me. I'm useless if I'm sleep deprived.

What/whom inspires you? My main inspirations have been Mother Teresa, for her humble service; and Bob Dylan, for his poetry, and really getting to the essence while speaking to something deeply internal. Beauty, color, textiles, poetry, and music are very inspirational for me. What can you say to our readers to inspire them with words of advice about yoga? Yoga will make your life better. It's really that simple. You'll feel better physically and emotionally. You'll have more confidence, and walk and talk in a different way as a result of a new-found intimacy with your body. It may also ignite a flame deep inside that has dimmed for most of us; When you become more mindful through the practices of yoga, it becomes more difficult to be unkind. Also, be patient with yourself: if a teacher doesn't resonate with you, keep looking until you find one that does. Please describe your yoga studio. What kinds of yoga do you offer? Certifications, upcoming schedule? Yoga Shanti is a home where every detail has been carefully crafted and thought out to create an environment that is inspirational to all of your senses. Just walking into the space will put you in such awe, that meditation will come easily. We offer all kinds of classes. We have beginner's classes every day. We offer flow classes that are sequenced perfectly. We offer advanced classes, classes for teachers, and certification. We offer pre-natal, cross-training, and senior's classes, and we offer workshops taught by senior teachers from around the globe. Tell us a bit about your new yoga DVD. How is it different from others on the market? Where can we buy or sample the DVD? Calorie Killer Yoga is my new DVD, set to launch on March 18th which will be available on Amazon.com. It's unique in that the sequencing is creative and safe, while incorporating cardio. You get the full range of classes-from standing pose to twists to backbends to sun salutes to arm-balance preps to hip openers and forward bends, with doses of ab work snuck in on most programs. The programs are really fun, unique, and effective. Any other projects, charities, hobbies you feel passionate about? Rodney and I have trained about 500 doctors, nurses, and yoga teachers in the Urban Zen Integrative Therapy method. Our hope is for nurses, doctors, and patients to get the care they need. The modalities that the practitioners are trained in are in-bed or chair-yoga practice, restorative-yoga practice, breath-awareness and body-scan meditations, essential-oil therapy, reiki, nutrition, and contemplative care in order to address the symptoms of pain, anxiety, nausea, insomnia, constipation, exhaustion and sadness. Anything else you would like to talk about? I'm writing a memoir that'll include yoga sequences for the roller coaster of one's life. The process is intense on all levels. Then, Yoga Shanti New York is opening in a few weeks, Calorie Killer Yoga is set to release March 18th. Colleen Saidman Yee, is yoga instructor and creator of Gaiam's Calorie Killer Yoga. With her husband, Rodney Yee, they have developed a variety of yoga DVDs. Saidman owns and directs the Yoga Shanti yoga studio in the Hamptons and conducts teacher trainings and retreats worldwide. BROMLEY MOUNTAIN VERMONT: Something for Everyone! B r o m l e y Mountain, also known as the “Sun Mountain” was established in 1936 by a member of the Pabst Blue Ribbon family Fred Pabst. It is located in the town of Peru in the Green Mountains of Vermont, very close to the eastern NY border and is extremely easy to reach from Long Island. Bromley Mountain is less than 4 hrs. from NYC and you can ride up 87 or 91 respectively. Ski Magazine voted Bromley #1 for Family Programs and #3 for Value in the East - spot on with its assessment of Bromley. My experience during Presidents’ week can simply be described as awesome. The conditions were pristine and most importantly, there was no waiting on a single lift line. Janessa Purney, Marketing Manager for the mountain, served as our host and guided us on the mountain providing excellent insight into what Bromley Mountain has to offer its visitors throughout the year. On a busy day, the mountain will see more than 3,000 visitors. Janessa, a telemark skier and boarder herself, took a few runs showing us the unique offerings that the mountain has to provide its guests in winter and summer. The marquee winter offering at Bromley is its unique Learning Zone for beginners. The Learning Zone offers an innovative approach to teaching the maneuvers a skier or boarder must attain before taking a lift and trying out the slopes. Its focus is terrainbased learning. While in the Learning Zone, skiers and boarders are provided formal and informal lessons. As a teacher myself, I can appreciate the method and/or approach to station learning, where students stop at different stations to learn. There are approximately 6 learning stations in The Learning Zone. The students learn about turns, balance, stops - basically all of the fundamentals a beginner skier or boarder needs to master before moving onto bigger and better things…According to Ben Wilcox, the General Manager at Cranmore, a sister mountain to Bromley, “Terrain features such as rollers, half-pipes, and banks are carved into the surface to serve almost like training wheels to build confidence in sliding on snow. Once beginners learn the fundamentals, the training wheels come off and they are able progress to the rest of the mountain much faster.” This learning terrain instruction is exclusive to only three New England resorts -Bromley, Cranmore, and Jiminy Peak. If you want to learn how to ski or board, the terrain-based learning is the best method available. You will be skiing and boarding down the slopes in no time

at all. Bromley Mountain offers something for everyone and all abilities. Bromley has a total of nine lifts: 1 High Speed Detachable Quad, 1 Fixed Grip Quad, 4 Double chairs, 1 T-Bar, 1 Covered Star Carpet and 1 Kids Center Carpet. The summit elevation is 3,284 feet and the vertical drop is 1,334 feet. The average snowfall at Bromley is approximately 141” and at the time of our visit their recorded snowfall was 151” with more snow in the forecast. The trails at Bromley meet the needs of beginners and experts alike. Bromley has forty-six trails which cover 178 of Bromley's 300 acres. There is a variety of skiing terrain for all levels of ability: 32% beginner, 37% intermediate and 31% advanced. Bromley is the only major ski area in New England with a southern exposure, giving its guests sun-drenched hours of fun, avoiding much of the “flat light” conditions that befall other resorts; flat light occurs during snowy or cloudy days or on trail runs that are constantly shaded, making it more difficult to judge terrain, hence, slowing you down. The longest trail called the Runaround is 2.5 miles long. Janessa’s and many of the locals favorite trail is Havoc which is a spacious black diamond that has a few very nice vertical drops and bumps mixed in. The mountain has 3 terrain parks that provide different levels of difficulty. Each park possesses jumps and a variety of elements in which tricksters can have a blast. Throughout the day, hikers were seen traversing the mountain in snowshoes. So for those experienced hikers, Bromley Mountain provides an excellent avenue to get some hiking in along the Adirondack trail which meanders through Bromley. The hours of operation are 9 am to 4 pm Midweek/Non-Holiday & 8:30 am to 4 pm Weekends/Holidays. The mountain shuts down its winter operations in the first week of April. The Bromley staff that we encountered on our visit was very helpful and provided important information about the mountain as well as the surrounding areas for lodging, restaurants, places to visit when not at the mountain and many other interesting facts. Bromley Mountain is in the upgrade process making it a more enjoyable experience for all of its guests. Capital improvements begin this year - $650k total is going into new snowmaking pipe & valves ($100k), a new air compressor ($300k) and a new groomer ($250k.) There is even talk that Bromley will be expanding to provide more accommodations nearer to the mountain in the coming years. While Bromley gets stars for family ski resorts for winter ski holidays, summer is packed with summer vacation activities. For Vermont family vacations, Bromley's Sun Mountain Adventure Park is Vermont's premier amusement park. It features the halfmile long Sun Mountain Flyer Zip rider-the longest zip line in New England. More fun with our Alpine Slide, 18 Hole Miniature Golf, and Big Splash Water Slide Ride, along with the Kids Fun Park and many more attractions. Bromley is the Vermont amusement park to be at this summer! For more info, www.bromley.com Photo by Jack Shapiro, New Living staff photographer

WHY THE TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) is Really, Really Bad for Your Health by Christine Lynn Harvey Editor-in-Chief New Living Magazine Photo: tradejustice.net The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a secretive, multi-national trade agreement that threatens sharing of information via the internet, public health, the environment and most frightening of all, the national, state and local laws and constitutions of each nation that sign the agreement. In effect, a tribunal of multinational corporations will be judge, jury and executioner of anyone who breaks its laws, holding nations and individuals legally and financially responsible for a loss in profits and any profits potentially lost in the future! In effect, the TPP is a major stepping stone towards a one-world corporatocracy, stripping nations and its citizens of basic human rights (the right to clean air, water, food, etc) as well as legal recourse for interfering with those rights. Leaked documents show that the TPP, dubbed "NAFTA on Steroids," would seriously infringe upon freedom of speech, right to privacy and due process, and prevent individual creativity and innovation. More frightening is the monumental threat the TPP poses to public health and the health of the planet. The fact that the TPP was created by representatives of multinational corporations without public participation and that it is shrouded in complete secrecy should have everyone who cares about their health and the environment rallying in the streets with pitch forks and torches. The TPP is a Frankenstein - truly a living nightmare - that once unleashed - will be very hard to put back in its cage. Despite the broad impact that the TPP will have, negotiations have taken place behind closed doors, without media scrutiny and with little transparency. President Obama has tried to "Fast Track" it through Congress without allowing Congress to debate or decide whether it is good for America and its citizens. The TPP is the magnum opus of unbridled corporate greed - a greed that continues to pollute and plunder the earth in a maniacal quest that allows the 1% to grab even more wealth and resources for itself. THE TPP WOULD UNDERMINE FOOD SAFETY, BAN GMO LABELING & ABOLISH THE LOCAL FOOD MOVEMENT According to www.exposethetpp.org: "The TPP would require the U.S. to import meat and poultry that do not meet U.S. food safety standards. The TPP would require the US to allow food imports if the exporting country claims that their safety regime is "equivalent" to our own, even if it violates the key principles of our food safety laws. These rules would effectively outsource domestic food inspection to other countries. (Editor's note: Does poisoned baby formula, pet food and lead-covered toys imported from China ring a bell?? Well, the TPP would force countries to trust other countries even with dubious health and safety track records like China) Under TPP, any U.S. food safety rule on pesticides, labeling or additives that is higher than international standards would be subject to challenge as "illegal trade barriers." The U.S. would be required to eliminate these rules and allow the unsafe imported food in, or we would face trade sanctions. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration already inspects less than 1% of all seafood imports for health hazards. Both Malaysia and Vietnam, major seafood exporters, would increase seafood imports and further overwhelm inspectors' limited ability to ensure the safety of our food (Editor's note: Does radioactive fall-out from Fukushima on seafood from the Pacific Ocean ring a bell?) Some TPP countries have serious shrimp and fish safety issues. High levels of contaminants have been found in Vietnam's seafood (Editor's note: High OBAMACARENY.ORG levels of dioxin from Agent OrWe will explain all available plans, ange which was sprayed by the the Benefits and the Premiums US military during the Vietnam Possible Subsidies or Tax Credits War is routinely found in fish and Help you enroll in the plan shrimp imported from Vietnam). that is best for you! Under the TPP, food labels could also be challenged as "trade Call Barbara Martin & Associates barriers." The TPP would impose (631) 589-9377 or (516) 794-0662 limits on labels providing infor(631) 589-9378 fax mation on where a food product barbara.martin43@verizon.net comes from. The TPP also would endanger truth-in-labeling laws OBAMACARENY.US

and threaten the movement to identify GMO foods on labels as well as identify how food was produced (Editor's note: You know the labeling that warns you that the food was processed in a copacking plant that may also contain nut, soy and gluten allergens??). TPP would expand the limits on consumer labels already included in existing "trade" agreements, like the World Trade Organization (WTO). But already under the WTO, the U.S. dolphinsafe tuna fish label and our country-of-origin meat and poultry labels have been successfully attacked by other countries. Under TPP, a foreign meat processing or food corporation operating within the United States could directly challenge our food safety and labeling policies." HEALTH WOULD DECLINE AND HEALTH CARE COSTS WOULD RISE SUBSTANTIALLY Under the TPP, pharmaceutical companies could challenge the use of generic drugs provided by national health care plans insisting that generic drugs be replaced with their more expensive drugs; This means the low cost drugs provided to low income families, veterans and seniors in the U.S. would be threatened and drive up health care insurance for all Americans. Local governments and nations could not hold corporations liable for clean-up or health care costs associated with environmental disasters; cigarette companies could legally sue nations for infringing on their right to design a more attractive cigarette label rather than the plain packaging that now warns consumers that cigarettes promote disease and death. Chemical companies that produce a substance that has serious health effects or causes death could be financially compensated for loss in profits. Take the case of Virginia-based Ethyl Corporation which sued the Canadian government under NAFTA investor-state laws and won. Ethyl Corporation produces MMT, gasoline additive that prevents engines from knocking but also contains manganese, a known neurotoxin. Canada banned MMT after it learned the EPA and the state of California banned it. Ethyl Corp. then sued Canada and won, and also reversed the ban on their product in that country. This may not concern you because it was a good old American capitalistdriven company suing a foreign country for damages. But, under TPP, a foreign company can sue the U.S. and win compensation. That compensation will be derived from taxpayer money, driving taxes up and government services down. Corporations can also sue the U.S. for unforeseen damages (ie. loss of profit in the future). Unbelievable you say? Read on... According to Public Citizen: "A major goal of U.S. multinational corporations for the TPP is to impose on more countries a set of extreme foreign investor privileges and rights and their private enforcement through the notorious "investor-state" system. This system allows foreign corporations to challenge before international tribunals national health, consumer safety, environmental, and other laws and regulations that apply to domestic and foreign firms alike. Outrageously, this regime elevates individual corporations and investors to equal standing with each TPP signatory country's government and above their citizens. This regime empowers corporations to skirt national courts and directly challenge our governments before tribunals of private sector lawyers operating under UN and World Bank rules to demand taxpayer compensation for domestic regulatory policies that investors believe diminish their "expected future profits." These regulatory policies can range from health and environmental protection to financial regulation. Under this regime, corporations can launch attacks on government medicine patent regulations that ensure access to affordable generic medicine. Indeed, in 2013, the U.S. Eli Lilly Company launched a $481 million NAFTA investor-state case against Canada's entire basis for granting medicine patents. If a corporation "wins," the taxpayers of the "losing" country must foot the bill. Over $400 million in compensation has already been paid out to corporations in a series of investor-state cases under NAFTA-style deals alone. This includes attacks on banning toxins, natural resource policies, health and safety measures, and more. In fact, of the nearly $14 billion in the 15 claims now pending under NAFTA-style deals, all relate to public health, environmental, energy, financial regulation and transportation policy - not traditional trade issues. Even when governments win, they waste scarce budgetary resources defending national policies against these corporate attacks." For more information on the frightening prospects the TPP holds (since your mainstream media ie. News 12, Fox and Friends, Bill O'Reilly, MSNBC, CNN, NPR, etc,) will not cover the real issues at stake, only show TPP protestors in a negative light), you must educate yourself further. Public Citizen is encouraging you to request the actual text of the TPP from your congressional representative, letting them know that if they don’t have a copy of the TPP text, they should. For more info and to send a letter directly to your representative: www.exposethetpp.org and citizen.org

OZONE THERAPY: The Miracle Medicine by Dr. Howard Robins it, as the actual list is very, very long. What is Ozone? Is it Safe? Wouldn’t it be great if there were a natural medicine that safely destroyed every bacteria, fungus yeast and mold with virtually no adverse reactions? And what if it also destroyed every toxin, harmful free radicle, and parasite in our body safely as well? If it existed you would probably have read about it or heard about it from someone or somewhere by now. Wouldn’t you? Well guess what! It not only does exist, but it has been used in over 45 countries by thousands of physicians in hundreds of hospitals and clinics for over 70 years! Not only that, but there are hundreds of peer reviewed medical studies on it’s use.

Why Haven’t We Heard About it?

What happens is, when medical grade oxygen and ozone gas is safely and painlessly injected by trained professionals into a vein (you can’t get an embolus from oxygen, only from nitrogen gas), the extra ”O” in the ozone molecule acts like a glue stealing an electron from anything in our body that it can latch onto. Healthy cells in our body contain natural anti-oxidants that protect them against damage or destruction. Only pathogens are destroyed. The most famous study done on its safety was published in Germany in 1982. In Germany medical ozone therapy is used pre and post-operatively to prevent infections. Jacobs, et al., reported in his published study that close to 400,000 patients were given over 5,500,000 treatments over a two-year period with an adverse reaction rate of .0007! There is no pharmaceutical medicine that comes even close to that safety record. Easy to see why ‘Big Pharma’ is not interested in letting the news out about ozone. So, if you have a disease or a condition that you haven’t been able to get rid of, Medical Ozone Therapy will most likely be the answer (it doesn’t get rid of genetic diseases) even for people that have suffered for years and have lost all hope.

So why haven’t you heard about “Intravenous Ozone Therapy”? If not for Ed McCabe’s book in “Oxygen Therapies” in 1988 (followed almost 20 years later by his more complete and accurate book “Flood Your Body with Oxygen” available at Amazon.com) we might still have not known of its use in Europe and it’s past historical medical use in the USA. If you have questions, you may contact Dr. Howard Robins at 212So why haven’t you heard about ozone therapy? Follow the money trail! It may be hard to believe but the pharmaceutical industry 581-0101. Dr. Robins is considered by many to be the foremost clinical along with help from the FDA has suppressed information about it’s expert on the use of Ozone in North America with over 21 years of clinical benefits and it’s use here in the USA, because of the money that would practice and 180,000 treatments performed. be lost if the use of antibiotics, antivirals and antifungal medicines were diminished due to it’s amazing benefits. Ozone is simply a non-patentable medicine. Since it is a highly reactive gas it has to be made “fresh” at the time of its use in a machine that passes electric current through medical grade oxygen in a special hand-blown glass tube. It can’t be stored in a powder, tablet, capsule or liquid form like other medicines. There are many websites (one of the best is www.ozoneunviersity.com) with great information along with dozens of translated studies (type in ‘Search’ “intravenous ozone therapy” on www.pubmed.gov, our National Library of Medicine) available which will tell you all about many of its safe and effective uses. Recently, Gary Null, PhD, made a powerful documentary called “Ozone Therapy: The Miracle Medicine” (available at www.garynull.com) discussing the use, safety and medical benefits of it. Some 40 patients also appear giving testimonials demonstrating ozone’s ability to completely get rid of many diseases and conditions previously thought to be incurable.

What are Some of These Illnesses? Herpes 1, 2 & 6, Shingles, Multiple Sclerosis, AIDS, Hepatitis B and C, Lyme, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Candidiasis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and Lupus, Acne, Fungus infections including fungused nails, Diabetic Retinopathy, Diabetic ulcers and gangrene, Diabetic neuropathy, Macular degeneration, are just some of the many diseases and conditions it has been used to safely and successfully treat worldwide! If the medical problem you suffer from is not listed here you should check to see if medical ozone has been used to treat
