An unreal landscape in one of the most peculiar ecosystems

Entre las muchas maravillas naturales de México, las Dunas de Yeso ocupan un sitio muy especial. Este desierto de cristal de un blanco de pureza imposible data de la era Mesozoica, cuando la región pertenecía al Mar de Tetis. Con el paso de los milenios, este mar se fue retirando de forma paulatina, dejando atrás lagunas que con el tiempo también se evaporaron.

Hoy en día, el sitio lo ocupa una extensión de 800 hectáreas cubiertas de un compuesto de sulfato de calcio y silicio, que forma una arena de aspecto brillante y textura suave y tersa. En el mundo, solo existen otros tres lugares con características similares, dos en la Unión Americana, en los Estados de Texas y Nuevo México, y uno más en Túnez, lo que nos habla de su gran relevancia, tanto por su inusual belleza como para la investigación científica en torno a los orígenes de la vida.

The Gypsum Dunes occupy a special place among Mexico’s many natural wonders. This impossibly white crystal desert dates back to the Mesozoic era when the region was part of the Tethys Sea. Over the millennia, this sea gradually withdrew, leaving behind lagoons that eventually dried out.

Today, the site is occupied by an extension of 800 hectares covered by a calcium sulfate and silicon compound, resulting in glossy and smooth sand.

There are only three more places with the same characteristics worldwide; two are in Texas and New Mexico in the United States, and one more is located in Tunisia. This speaks volumes about the relevance of the site, not only for its unusual beauty but also for scientific research around the origins of life.

Este prodigio prehistórico forma parte de la majestuosa Cuatro Ciénegas, en Coahuila. La reserva se encuentra 83 kilómetros al norte de la ciudad de Monclova, por lo que lo más conveniente es iniciar el trayecto desde aquí y tomar la carretera 30 hacia Villa Frontera y San Buenaventura.

Las Dunas son solo uno de los muchos atractivos de Cuatro Ciénegas, pero son por sí mismas razón suficiente para emprender el viaje. Recorre senderos y hondonadas y admira el contraste del blanco más prístino que tus ojos jamás hayan visto, con el azul intenso del cielo y el verde de las montañas de la Sierra Madre Oriental; observa las caprichosas formaciones que el viento se encarga de hacer y deshacer, y que son un recordatorio del constante cambio que significa la vida misma. Fascínate con las especies endémicas que habitan el lugar, como tortugas, conejos, correcaminos, lagartijas y plantas que se han adaptado a este ecosistema en constante transformación.

This prehistoric prodigy is part of the majestic Cuatro Ciénegas. The reserve is 83 kilometers north of Monclova, so it is better to start your trip from this city and take road 30 to Villa Frontera and San Buenaventura. The Dunes are only one of Cuatro Ciénegas’ attractions, but they are worth enough to make the journey. Wander around pathways and hollows while admiring the contrast of the most pristine white, the intense blue of the sky, and the green mountains of the Sierra Madre Oriental; watch the whimsical formations that the wind does and undoes, a reminder of the constant change of life itself. Get fascinated by the endemic species that live in the site like tortoises, rabbits, lizards, and plants that have adapted to this everevolving ecosystem.
