Newman Studies Program A Degree of Difference is your competitive advantage: The exclusive Newman Studies Program (NSP) – our innovative and nationally recognized academic core curriculum provides a powerful approach to thinking and problem solving to prepare you for the world that does not yet exist. The NSP equips our graduates with the skills employers value most.
Top 5 Skills employers are looking for in their employees*
1. Ability to work in a team 2. Verbal communication skills 3. Ability to make decisions and problem solve 4. Ability to obtain and process information 5. Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work *Results of 2013 survey by The National Association of Colleges and Employers
“Bosses and employers these days are looking for people who can adapt to different situations, who have a passion for learning... yes, there’s definitely skills training that we need to learn in college, but there are certain skills that you can’t just sit down and lecture on. It’s something that the students have to find themselves. And the NSP courses really pushed students to do that.” – Emily Simon ’16

Four educational principles of NSP
ACTIVE LEARNING Don’t expect a lot of lecturing. NSP courses are highly engaging and often involve role-playing games.
CRITICAL THINKING NSP courses help students learn to analyze evidence, question assumptions, test hypotheses and draw conclusions from data.
INTERDISCIPLINARITY Many NSP courses are co-taught by faculty members from different disciplines, and all expose students to content outside their major.
CONNECTIVITY The ultimate goal of the NSP program is to inspire students to make connections—connections between each other, connections between different fields of knowledge, connections between faith and reason and connections between themselves and the world we expect them to transform.
Prof P Dr. Jill Fort Chair of the Social Sciences Division and Associate Professor of Criminal Justice
Why put in all the grueling hours of work to get a doctorate in crime and criminology? Chances are it’s because that person likes helping people. Dr. Fort can not only educate you on the specifics of why criminals do the things they do, she can do it on a 100-mile bike ride. For several years now, Dr. Fort has participated in several “century rides” and covered countless miles to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
Profiles Dr. David Shubert Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Professor of Chemistry
Able to teach you how to balance a chemical equation and land a perfect roundhouse kick, Dr. Shubert has studied taekwondo for years. As a strong believer in a well-rounded liberal arts education, Dr. Shubert’s classes aren’t all lecture. He takes an approach that develops critical thinking skills– not just memorization. Having students work on assignments during class allows him to go around and not only lend a hand but test their greater understanding.

Newman believes in providing students with authentic and transforming opportunities to grow in their faith during the college years, setting the foundation which empowers our graduates to transform society. These opportunities are the legacy of the Adorers of the Blood of Christ, the founding and sponsoring religious order of sisters. St. John’s Chapel has become the hub of social and spiritual growth for many students over the years. In addition to offering daily Mass and confession, weekly Eucharistic adoration and Sunday services, Campus Ministry supports the great need for stewardship in our community and provides several ways for Jets to give their time and talent.

A DAY IN
Amy’s Jet Life After my music practice session, go to St. John’s Chapel to attend Adoration (the perfect opportunity for relaxing and silent reflection, I must say).
Lunch break after three morning classes.
7:33 AM Wake up for my 8 am class (my poor roommate’s slumber is always interrupted by my fire truck alarm that I’ve managed to build up an immunity to, and I feel SO BAD… but obviously not bad enough to actually wake up on time).
11 AM 12:50 PM 1:30 PM
Head to the practice rooms after chorale to learn a new song on the ukulele or piano.
2:37 PM
Never underestimate the power of a 23 minute nap!
PM
Homework time. I also have wonderful mid-day chats with my friend Makayla, go on a Wal-Mart run and watch as our dorm room (referred to by some as the “Master Bedroom”) fills with more and more of our friends.
Amy Eat dinner with friends at the Caf. (Mabee Dining Center). We always play the “High/ Low” game where you go around the table and share your low and high points of the day. Good opportunity to find joy in the little things.
3 PM
4:28 PM
Stop by Scooter’s for a pick-me-up (Pot of Gold is my go-to beverage).
5:17 PM
Sprint back to the dorm, finish homework and hit the hay (before midnight!)
7 PM
11:59 PM
Play rehearsal, (Shout out to Dr. Crane: Thanks again for helping me out with the Latin lines!) then off to Sloppy Joe Improv rehearsal with some of the most hilarious people I have ever met.

“When I went to
Newman because of its welcoming nature and small size, I was able to grow in a way I wouldn’t have been able to at a larger institution. I learned a lot about leadership, getting involved, and service learning. It’s exciting that Newman can prepare its graduates so well to “transform society,” and have a fire and passion for what we do.

A Five-Star Experience: Let our Graduates Speak for Themselves
BRANDON BRINGHAM, BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION ’09, CO-FOUNDER OF KANSAS FILTRATION LLC
“The professors had high expectations. As a student, I didn’t necessarily always like that, but looking back now, that prepared me very well … I believe I am here today, doing what I’m doing because of my past and Newman was a big part of that.”
CLARE VANDERPOOL, ENGLISH, ’87, CHILDREN’S BOOK AUTHOR
“I loved the whole Newman experience. I enjoyed my classes and had great teachers … Academic life was rigorous and rewarding, but I really loved the whole college experience. Newman is a place where we learned not only how to be good in a particular field of study but also how to be good people.”
KATIE VALLIERE STREIT, PH.D., SECONDARY EDUCATION AND ENGLISH, ’08
“At Newman, you are challenged to work on difficult problems, but you have the professors and other students around you so when you struggle they’re there to pick you up and teach you how to succeed.”
TIM BELSON, J.D., ENGLISH ’09, TRIAL ATTORNEY FOR THE US DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, OFFICE OF IMMIGRATION LITIGATION
“Ninety percent of what I do now depends on my ability to communicate in writing, and to do so well and convincingly. I came away from Newman with a head start over my classmates because of the expectations and demands that were placed on us.”
TAMMY WHITE, INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES - BUSINESS MANAGEMENT ’11, MBA ’13, PROGRAM MANAGER OF GLOBAL MISSION SUPPORT FOR TEXTRON AVIATION
“The kindness and warmth of the staff and students was remarkable to me. The majority of my professors were outstanding in their ability to show that they actually cared about me … It is a smaller school that enables students to really matter.”
