ISSUE 2 Book Mastermind

In February students from Key Stage 3 took part in the Book Mastermind Challenge. The Book Mastermind competition is open to students in years 7 to 9 across Suffolk. The quiz works like the TV show, Mastermind, however the specialist subject must be a book. The first round of the competition was held in the library, with 10 students taking part. The winner, Ruby Davis, will compete in the next round in Bury St Edmunds, with one round as her chosen book, and the second round as general knowledge. Congratulations to the following students who took part in the competition: Alex Baldock, Joanna Bowen, Cassie Byford, Kotryna Jokubynaite, Louise Donoher, Kyle Gammon, India Jee, Ellie Milnes, Amira Price and our winner, Ruby Davis. Challenge Day – Yr 10 and 11.

Sam Callahan Online Safety & Cyber Bullying assembly X Factor finalist, Sam Callahan, visited Newmarket Academy and delivered a Performance Workshop. The 'Online Safety & Cyber Bullying’ themed School Tour incorporated an online safety educational message for students. Sam also performed hits by Ed Sheeran and Stevie Wonder.

On the 2nd of February, our Key Stage 4 students took part in a Challenge Day. The year 11s were participating in their option B subjects whilst the year 10s were learning about the EU and how it makes decisions. The day then ended with a few of our pupils talking about a decision that their English class had come up with. These students had to stand up in front of the year group; this takes some courage. All of our students should be proud of themselves. We are looking forward to the next challenge day.

Nick Froy, head of school commented "It was fantastic having an X Factor star at the Academy. Sam delivered a very engaging performance whilst delivering a valuable and clear message to our students. As always, the students and staff were outstanding, some a little star struck, and everyone really enjoyed it.”

World Book Day World Book Day is coming to Newmarket Academy! Make sure you come to the library on the 3rd March to get your £1 book token in exchange for one of this year’s £1 books. To see the full selection, visit http://worldbookday.com.

Intermediate Maths Challenge.

Year 7 Spelling Bee

On the 4th of February, the main hall was filled with students from the top set maths groups from years 9, 10 and 11. Their aim was to apply their maths knowledge to 25 questions and answer them in the time limit of an hour. The maths challenge takes place across the UK, and certificates are to be won, as well as competing against other schools and the county.

Some of our Year 7 students have won the first stage of our school’s Spelling Bee competition. Their effort, hard work and determination paid off and they’ve all started competing for stage 2 Foreign Language Spelling Bee competition. Spelling Bee is a competition for students in Year 7 to practise and improve their vocabulary, spelling and memory skills in a foreign language (French or Spanish). The Spelling Bee project is an interactive and sociable opportunity for students in Year 7 to practise and develop their language vocabulary range, memorisation strategies and literacy skills outside the classroom. The aim of the Spelling Bee is to enhance the motivation of language learners and help them achieve their potential. Winners of stage 2 will represent Newmarket Academy at the Regional Final in Cambridge next term.

Primary Music Day On the 2nd of February, pupils from All Saints, Paddocks, Laureate and Exning primary schools came up to the school for a day of multi-‐cultural music. The students learnt songs and pieces of music from Poland and Indonesia and at the end of the day, performed their music to family and friends. The day was a great success and all the children thoroughly enjoyed learning the Polish version of Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes, and expanding their knowledge of the ancient tradition of the Gamelan. This was an important day for the schools and helped them to understand more about the many forms of music and traditions shared within our local and global community.
