Jan 2016 Aspiration and Challenge students visit Kings College Cambridge

Last Tuesday, Years 9, 10 and 11 Aspiration and Challenge students, along with Mr Kirby and Miss Mansfield, visited Kings College Cambridge for the Choral Evensong service in the college chapel. After enjoying tea and cakes at Fitzbillies, a restaurant renowned for its Chelsea Buns, the group made their way down to the chapel to enjoy the 45 minute service. Everyone enjoyed the singing of the full choir at Kings. The choir consists of 16 boy choristers, aged between nine and 13, and 14 male undergraduates studying at Cambridge University. The choir sings daily at Kings College Chapel, and has done since 1441. Nowadays they also perform in concerts and shows around the world.

Newmarket Academy Music - Samba Band On Tuesday 19th January, the Newmarket Academy samba band, ‘Not Just Horses’ went to Paddocks Primary school to perform their piece and inspire the children to get into music. The samba band has performed at many of the local primary schools and last year got the chance to perform at Snape Maltings. One band member said, “It’s important for us to play to the local community to inspire everyone to play and enjoy music.” In the future the band hopes to play in more primary schools and further their success.

New staff to Newmarket Academy This term has seen many changes, we’ve had to say goodbye to some great teachers, but we look forward to what the new staff can bring to this school. We welcome: * Lesley Hogg – Acting Head of Sixth Form, Director of the Trust and support for year 11 (also teaches maths) * Georgina Sargent – Head of maths * Kathryn Lupson – English teacher We hope that they feel welcome and supported in our community.

Netball Our U13 (Y8) Girls Netball team have won their group with 2 wins and a draw against rival schools, to go through to the West Suffolk Finals. Well done to all! Your effort has paid off.

We now have 110 student leaders in school; Ambassadors, EAL Ambassadors, Sports Leaders, Student Council Members and Music Ambassadors.

In each and every event, the selected ambassadors give it their all to do the best they can to be responsible leaders. As well as this, they are chosen to represent the Academy at school events, as well as events that take place within the school. The leaders are a great influence to other people around them. These 110 students are sure to make us very proud in the future at Newmarket Academy.

Aspiration and Challenge students led assemblies on Holocaust to practice for the Dora Love Prize. Last week, as part of the Aspiration and Challenge group led by Mr Kirby, six students led an assembly within each house on the Holocaust. This was a practice run for their chance to win the Dora Love Prize. We are extremely proud of the students that led the assemblies as they did a fantastic job, even though it is extremely nerve-‐wracking getting up and speaking to a large group of people.

"Live Your Dreams" On Friday 15th of January, our year 10 students were enlightened by a visit from some members of our community. The visitors included; our local Chancellor, a manager of Bedford Hotel and Spa and a director of the Rowley Mile Racecourse, plus a few more. The focus of this morning was a chance for the students to gain advice as to what job interviewers were looking for. The students were asked to draw a pig, and explain whereabouts the pig was drawn and the certain features it had. This led to showing that the students shared some of the same qualities! The students enjoyed the assembly and activities; it was such a pleasure for so many professional businessmen & women from Newmarket to come in and share their experiences with the Year 10s.
