1st February 2016 Dear Parents/Carers As you know, Newmarket Academy has made significant improvements over the last two years. The improvements made and continued strategies to improve learning and ultimately achievement has resulted in our official, verified and reported overall results last year being 54% 5 A*-C, English and Maths. This was an impressive move from the 46% of the previous year, and was above the National Average. Teaching and learning has improved and now almost all lessons observed are good or better. A new house structure was implemented and this has resulted in the individual Heads of House being clear on which students need support in their learning, behaviour or emotional development, and can then ensure that this is delivered and tangible results are seen. A new robust behaviour policy has been implemented and has resulted in major improvements, ensuring that students are focused on learning, and disruption caused by a small number of individuals is kept to the bare minimum, and persistent offenders are both supported to change but also are clear of the consequences if they do not. Behind these and many more strategies and initiatives are a strong, committed, hardworking, student focused team of support staff, teaching staff, leaders and senior leaders, Deputy Head and Head of School, and Governing Body. My reason for writing to you is that as Chair of Governors I need to ensure that there is a Governing Body in place which will both challenge the Head and his leadership team over delivery of the strategies and policies, reviewing evidence and ensuring any changes are made to ensure results are met and achievement at the Academy continues to grow, but also to provide support as a “critical friend. Currently there are three vacancies on the Governing Body and I am looking for volunteers to fill these positions. The role requires the Governor to attend 1 meeting per half term, (6 per year.) Each Governor is linked to a member of the senior leadership team and is required to meet with them also once per half term to review their action plans, and provide the support and challenge as needed. I am interested in hearing form anyone who has a passion and commitment to driving the Academy forward. Ideally a background in either HR, Marketing or a legal role would be perfect, but the most important qualification is a true desire to see Newmarket Academy become an outstanding provider of education and learning experience, something the existing staff and governors believe in and are working hard to achieve. Please contact Claire Lawrence, PA to Head of School, telephone 01638 664412 or claire.lawrence@newmarketacademy.co.uk in the first instance if you would like further details. Yours faithfully
