ISSUE 3 Year 10 Challenge Day On the 25th of February, our year 10 students took part in a Citizenship Challenge Day. Their day was focused around Power, Politics and the Media, with a range of activities based on these topics that included House of Commons role-play and being part of a voting system. Students really enjoyed the day, as it was good for the students to learn about Power, Politics and Media before they come of age to legally vote, so it’s good as certain jobs that they will be employed in may well have something to do with politics. It’s also great to hear other students’ opinions on certain members of the Members of Parliament and Political Parties.

Penny Wars The Maths Department has raised £164.97 through the penny wars. In the week 22nd – 26th February we saw all of our houses battle it out to raise money for the NSPCC. Many of our students brought in as many copper coins as they could and placed them in their allocated house buckets which were in the dining hall to see who could get the highest amount of house points. However, silver coins meant that points were deducted from the overall amount of house points received from the copper coins. Tutte house were the champions, by just 79 pence!!

‘Live Your Dreams’ Our Year 10’s had a visit from members of our community on the 26th of February. The students had an assembly explaining the importance of first impression. Then each English class had a speaker explain how the personal statement in a CV has a lot to do with whether or not you are employable. This was then followed by another assembly with role play of an interview with examples of a good one and a bad one. Our students enjoyed the session and we are looking forward to the last instalment of ‘Live Your Dreams’.

Year 8 Options Evening On the 3rd of March the Year 8 students got their first insight into what options they could choose for their GCSEs. There was a wide range of subjects for them to choose, from Catering to Engineering, History to Drama. 86% of the year group turned up to this informative and very important meeting. We hope that they will enjoy studying the options they have picked for the rest of their GCSE course.

Mock Exams GCSE Science in Action On the 4th of March, a few of our students went to University College London. This trip was part of Aspiration and Challenge in partnership with the Science Department. Mr Kirby along with Mr Cornwell and 14 year 10’s thoroughly enjoyed the day with lectures in the Logan Hall all based around science. One talk was about a career in Space and one about ugly animals so it was a variety of different aspects but it ended on a high note with a really funny science presenter showing us experiments involving physics. All in all it was a good day to be had, it was a joy to be a part of it, and we hope that there are other opportunities like this in store.

Year 11’s have been working on their mocks. Our Year 11 students, who are preparing for their GCSE’s, have sat their second set of mocks in the week beginning 22nd February 2016, which was the first week back after half term. This was an insight for them to see how the GCSE exams work. It also helps them to prepare themselves ready for the future.

Upcoming Dates This week the talented students of Newmarket Academy will take centre stage in our school production of Beauty and the Beast Jr. They have been rehearsing since before January and soon their hard work will pay off in 3 shows between the 16th and 18th of March.
