Newmarket Academy Brooke House News

I

t has been some time since the last newsletter and a great deal has occurred. Lets get the big stuff out of the way, Brooke House won two trophies at the end of last term. The first for the best house attendance and the second for the most reward points issued to students. To my mind, these are the most important trophies to win, essentially the best behaved students that attend school the most. Nothing more to be said other than we are in line to win the same two trophies at the end of this term. In other news, Year 10 students have been taking part in the ‘Live Your Dreams’ scheme, working with business leaders from Newmarket to explore personnel brand and how best to prepare for an interview. Year 10 students have also been completing their own CVs with the opportunity to be interviewed by a local business leader. What better way to prepare for the world of work. Congratulations to Adam Davy who recently received promotion in the sea cadets. We have had Brooke House students representing the House in extra curricular maths activities and the Book Mastermind, all have participated with enthusiasm and done very well. We are currently joint top on attendance at 96.5% and each week Mr Kirby hands out prizes for 100% attendance as a tutor group and for the most improved tutor group attendance.

A

s part of our continued focus on developing the social, moral, spiritual and cultural understanding of students at Newmarket Academy, we have celebrated the Epiphany, Makur Sankranti (A Hindu Celebration), Martin Luther King day, Burn’s night, the Holocaust memorial day. We have had assemblies on different cultures and the way they celebrate shrove Tuesday and Lent. We have celebrated World Book Day and I particularly enjoyed celebrating Mother’s Day.

I

think it is fair to say that if, as a House, we wish to retain our status as the best house at Newmarket Academy then we all must try harder over the coming term. I suppose this applies even more so to the current Year 11. GCSE exams are fast approaching and all year 11 students need to be revising and getting prepared. There are Easter revision sessions happening as well as Saturday school alongside a great number of lunchtime and after school revision sessions. If you need help, ask. Have a Happy Easter.

Try Harder When you try your best and it doesn’t work And you lose your cool and then go berserk Try harder When you make a plan that’s not on the cards When you’re tackled short of just a few yards Try harder When you get a message and you think it can wait And you put off responding ‘till a later date Try harder When you’re mad at someone ’cause they messed up once more And you unload on them with your vengeful roar Try harder When you know you should go for a jog or a run But you stay on the couch because it’s more fun Try harder When you’re asked for your help but you tell them “I can’t” Because you’re so busy you’ve no time to grant Try harder When you see something weird and make fun with jokes ‘Cause your personal tastes are not like those folks Try harder When you throw in the towel and whimper “I quit!” ‘Cause you can’t bare to take another big hit Try harder When you come home from work and just sit on the couch And spend your evening being a tired grouch Try harder When someone you love doesn’t get your attention When their thoughtfulness doesn’t get any mention Try harder When you read or see something that brings up your mood But you don’t share with others so they’ll feel renewed Try harder

ranklin came second in the penny wars. We were pipped into 2nd place by Tutte by 97p. As a school we raised £164.97 for the NSPCC. It was a great competition organised by our new Head of Maths Mrs Sargent and her Maths department. Rules of penny wars - All coppers in your house buckets, these count as positive points. All other coins (or notes) in other house buckets, these count as negative points. The winning house was the one with the least negative difference.

Most improved House

ttendance is up to a very healthy 96.3%. We are 0.2 behind the other Houses and have them in our sights. Students are working closely with their tutors to win prizes for their tutor group by all being in on a weekly basis. Behaviour has got significantly better with massive improvements being made from this time last year. Our Rewards points are also on the up, so well done all.

ranklin climbed to the top of the House Cup table (albeit briefly) thanks to the remarkable efforts of two members of our House. The competition was in partnership with ‘Education Exchange’, a charity that works in southern Kenya supporting local agricultural communities. Both designed products that could now potentially be used by the metal work company in Kenya to sell as a product. Well done to Jordan Clarke (1st) and Stephanie Wing (3rd) .

Proud of Tutte students

W

e have continued to have house council meetings to discuss things we would like to change or have in school, a lot of our discussion has been around the good things happening in school. As a house we voted for our house charity to be Macmillan Cancer support at the beginning of the year. However in February Miss Gynn’s brother passed away from Cancer and a just giving fundraising page was set up in his name by one of his friends. This page ends on the 31st March (after the Easter Fayre) so we are going to donate our Easter Fayre fundraising to the charities of Sarcoma UK and The Arthur Rank Hospice through this page #runformarcus

W

e raised £300 from the Hamper competition at Christmas, thank you for your donations and for buying the tickets.
