MESSAGE FROM YOUR MAYOR & COUNCIL 2020 was a year we will never forget. The past year has tested our local businesses to the limit. Thank you to the Chamber of Commerce for your continued partnership and leadership, and for helping our businesses to navigate these uncharted waters. In the midst of a global pandemic, our business community has come up with some of the most out of the box and creative ways to continue to offer products and services to our community under extremely difficult circumstances. This year, I could not be more proud of our local business community for their innovation, entrepreneurship, grit and determination. I also want to sincerely thank and acknowledge our entire community for continuing to support each other and our local businesses in various ways. Now more than ever, I am so incredibly inspired by our community and how we have come together to face one of the most challenging times of our lives. There are many reasons why we are one of the most desirable places to live in the country, but most importantly it is the heart and the people of Newmarket that never stop amazing me. Together we will continue to do great things as we all look forward to bigger, better and brighter days ahead. Let’s continue to always Choose Local, #ChooseNewmarket. Sincerely,
John Taylor, Mayor

MESSAGE FROM the Chair
W
hen we last put out this annual publication, we had no clue what the world was in store for. COVID-19 had only just arrived in Canada and in those early days, many of us thought it would be an issue that would resolve itself in months. More than a year later, most of us are now living lives that in many
ways feel vastly different from our old ones. It’s impossible to deny the very real hardships that have resulted from this pandemic. But amidst so much bad news, there have been some bright spots. One of the brightest has been the surge in support for our local businesses. As the 2021 Chair of the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, I can tell you with confidence your support makes a difference. There’s been a growing understanding and appreciation for the importance of a strong local business community. Businesses create jobs, pay important commercial taxes and are part of the fabric of our town. Newmarket is a special place to call home, and that’s thanks in no small way to our local businesses—many of which can only be found here.
I invite you to get to know some of them in this special publication from the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce. From our Local Vibe feature to our Home and Lifestyle Showcase, we highlight some of the area’s terrific businesses. At the back of this magazine, you’ll also find our annual directory. I hope you’ll use it to help source the services and products you use every day.
Kyle Burgis Board Chair Newmarket Chamber of Commerce
MESSAGE FROM the President & Ceo
I
f you know anything about the Newmarket Chamber, you know we are huge supporters of keeping things local. It’s been a tough time for area businesses. Over the past year, we have launched a number of initiatives to help. These include starting up the Newmarket Shop Local Facebook group and creating a holiday guide to help people find great gifts close to home. We also teamed up with the Town of Newmarket on a large shop local campaign and contest to get people thinking (and shopping) locally more often. These initiatives have all been huge successes—thanks to a groundswell of community support. Where there is any hesitation, it’s usually around the perceived higher cost of shopping local. Thankfully, a lot of people have come to realize that isn’t necessarily always the case. When
it is, I think it’s important to look at the bigger picture. When you buy a product or service from a business in town, that purchase has power. It means that business can in turn support others— like local charities and sports teams. You’re not just buying an item, you’re putting your money toward culture, community and town vibrancy. Even small changes in your shopping habits add up. Consider this: if every household in Newmarket spends $50 locally each month, that adds up to nearly $1.5 million flowing into our local economy. Over the span of a year, that’s around $18 million! Beyond purchases, there are other ways to help. How about writing a Yelp or Google review for a favourite business, liking their pages on social media and sharing a post or two? It all matters,
and businesses (owned by our neighbours, friends and fellow community members) truly do appreciate the support.

GET TO KNOW THE CHAMBER
Y
ou’ve likely heard of the Newmarket Chamber but you may not know all that we do. We’re a not-for-profit membershipbased business association that supports its members—typically business owners and operators— in a variety of ways. For example, we provide networking and learning opportunities, and also advocate on behalf of businesses at all levels of government. We’re also a big part of the Newmarket community (in fact, we’ve been here for more than 160 years)! Read on to discover more about us.
ONE
TWO We Help People Save Money
We Give Away Money! Yes, you read that right! Since 2012, the Newmarket Chamber has operated Awesome Foundation Newmarket, and during that time it’s given away nearly $95,000 in grant money to help fund ideas that benefit youth in Newmarket. Talk about awesome! The chapter is part of the Awesome Foundation, a global initiative made up of autonomous chapters helping good things happen around the world. It’s actually not a foundation or even a charity for that matter. Instead, it’s more like a giving circle where 10 generous people known as trustees each donate $100 to form a $1,000
hassle-free, no-strings-attached grant that we give out most months. Over its existence in Newmarket, Awesome grants have helped fund a wide variety of initiatives. For example, grants have gone toward purchasing winter gear for kids in need and filling backpacks with school supplies. They’ve also helped fund lunch programs, brought birthday celebrations to children living in shelters, and so much more. Anyone (of any age) can apply— organizations, individuals and groups. The deadline is the 15th of each month. Learn more at newmarketchamber.ca/awesome.
We’ve teamed up with FanSaves, a digital coupon platform that makes it easy to save on some of the products and services you use every day. Take advantage of all the deals participating members are offering! To get started, sign up at www.fansaves.com, download the app and follow the Newmarket Chamber.
THREE We Recognize Businesses... And You Can Too Showing your support for local businesses means a lot to them—especially these days. One of the ways to do that is by nominating them for the Business Excellence Awards. Each year, the awards celebrate businesses whose achievements or community involvement have made a positive difference. We think they’re so important that in 2020 we took them virtual! Head over to our website at newmarketchamber.ca to get your nomination in or for more details. Nomination deadline is April 16, 2021.
Awesome in Action! Seen here, Emily Agnoluzzi, Barb Wallace and Jill Petrie from Girls Inc. in the organization’s new digs on Queen Street. The Awesome Foundation Newmarket grant they received has helped them make the most out of the two-storey space, including a kid-friendly basement revamp complete with craft room and kitchen.

HOME & LIFESTYLE FEATURE
Inside & Out
Whether it’s a budget-friendly update or a long-term investment, there are plenty of ways to give your home a hug! Brighten Things Up
Table lamps aren’t typically the first thing people think of when redecorating but these under-rated players in your space deserve a little attention. We love Neon Flamingo’s upbeat eclectic collection of modern, vintage and mid-century lamps. From 1950s Lotte lamps to a 1925 Art Deco metal floor lamp, the store’s inventory is cool, varied and in high demand. In other words, get them while you can! See their current collection at neonflamingo.ca
Pillow Talk
Toss some cushions on the couch, add in a new throw and voilà—instant update! In the spring and summer, lighter colours and fabrics are a great way to bring the outdoors in. Come the cooler weather, thicker throws and cozy colours call “let’s stay in!” We love Show Cushions’ collection of luxe cushions, covers and throws (seen here: Garth Leather Pillow Covers, $44 each). Find them at showcushions.com
Natural Selection
Herbs smell great and give foods a boost of flavour, but some—like basil, rosemary and mint—are also pretty handy come mosquito season. Plant them around your deck or outdoor space for a pretty way to keep the bugs at bay. (Pro tip: always plant mint in pots to avoid it taking over your garden!) Snap up potted herbs at New Roots Garden Centre or grab some seeds from Vince’s Market seasonally.

Add Some Art
Orange Crush, $150, Wallace Artistry in Glass 20 newmarketchamber.ca
Unique art helps your space tell a tale and you don’t have to travel far to find it. Newmarket has a flourishing arts community with talented painters, photographers, jewellery designers and more at our doorstep. We love the rich colours and textures found in the work of stained glass artist, Beth Wallace of Wallace Artistry in Glass. Visit her website at wallaceartistryinglass.com to see her current items for sale.
Colour Burst
Not only are fresh flowers an instant mood booster, but they’re a great way to add pops of colour and brighten up a room. Don’t wait for someone to buy you some—treat yourself! You’ll find flowers for every occasion (and space!) at Cassidy’s Flowers, a Newmarket business that’s been around since 1905. cassidysflowersandgifts.com Photos courtesy of Kempenfelt Windows & Doors.
Curb Appeal
We all know the value kitchen and bathrooms hold but what about a new front door? It’s one of the biggest ways to quickly create some curb appeal. A quality, well installed door will last upwards of 25 years and help keep drafts and moisture out, meaning your home stays warmer and costs less to heat. Fibreglass and steel doors are among the most common types of door materials used in Canada where our harsh climates can take a toll on other materials. Fibreglass doors won’t dent, crack or warp over time and are highly efficient. They also offer a multitude of designs and finishing options, including realistic looking wood grain. Steel doors offer excellent security and efficiency and are available in a wide range of designs and styles. Fitted with high quality finishes and hardware, steel doors are designed to perform well and look great in the process.

FUNDING home RENOVATIONS E
ven when you’re pinching your pennies, home renos don’t typically come cheap. When figuring out where the cash is going to come from, it’s important to do plenty of research and weigh your options before deciding on how to finance them. Talking to a lender is also a good idea—they can provide important insight and let you know how much you can borrow if you go that route. Here are some of your options.
1. Savings or credit
Dipping into savings or using a credit card are two ways to go, particularly with smaller projects. If you opt for a card, have a plan in place to deal with the balance—high interest rates can add significantly to the cost of a project.
2. Personal loan
Personal loans typically cost less in interest rates than credit cards. They are repaid in set installments over a pre-determined time frame, usually that’s one to five years but sometimes you can get them spread over a longer period of time.
“PartY” platter Tip:
Want to get things paid off quicker? Opt for bi-weekly loan installments rather than monthly.
3. Line of credit
Opening up a line of credit means you have access to additional funds and you only pay interest on the amount you use. Interest rates are usually lower than credit cards and, unlike a loan, you can reborrow the funds without reapplying. With this type of revolving credit you only pay the minimum monthly interest payments. If you’re not a saver, this type of financing can mean a longer pay off period.
4. Mortgage refinancing
This type of financing usually offers a better interest rate than a credit card or personal loan and repayment is spread over a long period of time. There are set-up fees to factor in.
5. Financing upon home purchase
If you’re planning on buying a new home and you know it’s going to need some major renovations, adding them to the cost of your mortgage may be an option. You’ll typically pay a lower interest than with a credit or loan and will have a longer time spread in which to pay it.
Tip: Plan for “unexpected” costs by setting additional funds aside.

To figure out what wine will pair best, Tracy Noseworthy of Trayvino Wine Company says focus on the food’s main components of salt, fat and acid. Salt in food softens wine’s harder elements, like bitter tannins or sharp acidity. The wine selection should always be more acidic than the food you are serving. Sparkling wines are very foodfriendly, pairing well not just with fancy foods, but salty snacks like French fries, potato chips and popcorn! If you prefer suds over sparkling, there are some great local ales on the market. Piers Simpson of Market Brewing recommends keeping it light. For example, their Bes Lite, Lagered Ale, is a perfect pairing for any light snack or charcuterie. YOUR NEWMARKET | Spring 2021 23

5 Shifts From what’s here to what’s on the horizon, we take a look at trends in food, design and more Wide plank vinyl flooring is an increasingly popular choice. Photo courtesy of Floors Direct North.
3. Tilt and Turns
Already wildly popular in Europe, more and more Canadian homes are featuring this ingenious window and door design. Offering both vertical tilt venting as well as the ability to swing open, tilt and turns offer functionality and versatility. “They are one of the best window and door styles on the market today in terms of energy efficiency, and our locking mechanisms and steel reinforcement contribute to their excellent security and performance,” says Robert Maslen, Owner of Kempenfelt Windows & Doors. Kempenfelt Windows & Doors offers a variety of tilt and turn windows and doors.
1. “Open-Air Living”
Move over hygge, there’s another Scandinavian term taking holding—friluftsliv. Pronounced free-looftsliv, the term translates to “open-air living” and it’s something many Norwegians take to heart regardless of the season. With good reason: Quality time in nature has been shown to boost mood and creativity and reduce stress. With fewer things to do, more of us are reaping those benefits whether that means time in the backyard or hiking the many trails in the Newmarket area. Need some help figuring out where to explore? Turn to page 26 for some ideas. 24 newmarketchamber.ca

2. Changes Underfoot
When it comes to flooring options, people are increasingly looking for greener products that boast high recycled content and raw materials obtained from sustainable sources, says Jeannie Sperry of Floors Direct North. “The carpet industry is making inroads into greener products such as using corn sugar instead of nylon and fibres made of postconsumer food and drink containers.” In terms of hardwood, Sperry says textured grained hardwood is making a comeback. “Grain combined with wire brushing gives lots of protection against scratches and damage.” Vinyl flooring is still a popular choice but these days it’s all about luxury wide plank vinyl. “It’s getting harder to distinguish the wood and tile looks from the real thing,” she says, adding one of the biggest differences comes via its lower price point.

5. Pop-Up Kitchens
No time to cook? HealthyNow offers pre-made meals for families, seniors and athletes.
4. Made From Scratch (Just Not by You)
Those nightly dinner dilemmas around what to make have been largely taken care of by meal kits—a growing industry that is expected to exceed $400 million in the next year. While they’re handy and cut down on time in grocery stores, they unfortunately don’t actually make themselves. (Side note: how is it that we’re still so busy even though more of
us are working from home?!) That’s where pre-ordered meals come in. Businesses like Newmarket-based HealthyNow offer options for families, seniors and athletes with choices that include a variety of types of diets, such as keto and vegan options. “They alleviate the stress of cooking and provide a healthy alternative to fast food,” says Co-Owner and Chef, Christine Rooney. (Visit them at healthnow.ca.)
Last year, local social media was abuzz with glowing reviews for Ghost Taco—a mysterious pop-up kitchen that had foodies raving. The brainchild of the EventMrkt team, Manager Samantha Crossman says the company took note of the growing trend in the U.S. for pop ups, opting for some very cool take-out concepts to counter the current unpredictable nature of indoor dining and events. The team chose classic items like tacos and fried chicken (they’ve also launched Lou’s Fried Chicken) but put a modern fresh spin on them. “The idea of these restaurants being “pop-up” only generated some mystery and excitement that had people eager to try them,” says Crossman, adding they’ve got more concepts in the works. These days, you’ll find several delicious pop-up options in town, including a weekend pierogi pop-up at Goblets & Goblins. Pop-up kitchens have injected some fun into the takeout universe. Seen here: Ghost Taco.

CANADA’S OIL AND NATURAL GAS INDUSTRY: ENERGIZING RECOVERY, PARTNERING FOR PROSPERITY The year 2020 was certainly challenging, especially the impact of COVID-19 that caused a collapse in natural gas and oil investment in Canada to the lowest level in a decade, in turn leading to lost jobs and economic opportunity. Q: Why does that matter to people in Ontario? A: It matters because the industry’s multi-million-dollar supply chain is nation-wide. Canada’s oil and natural gas industry works with suppliers across the country, from technical and engineering service providers to fabricators and manufacturers. Outside of Alberta, Ontario is the largest supplier of goods and services to Canada’s oil sands industry, despite challenges facing the industry in recent years that have rippled through the economy even before the pandemic. In 2016-2017, Ontario’s participation in the oil sands supply chain totalled $1.89 billion purchased from more than 1,160 suppliers. The energy sector is poised for recovery and that bodes well for suppliers in Ontario. In January 2021, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) forecasted a small uptick in capital investment within the industry, signalling the beginning of economic recovery for Canada with natural gas and oil as one of the primary recovery drivers. And that bodes well for workers in Ontario.
Beyond being a strong economic driver, the natural gas and oil industry is continuously improving environmental performance, especially reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In this area, the industry looks to technology innovators across the country, including those in Ontario.
Collectively Canada has the innovation, h ig h s t a n d a rd s fo r s afet y a n d environmental per formance, and technological expertise to be the world’s energy supplier of choice. Canada can produce reliable, affordable and responsibly produced energy that will get Canadians back to work.
As Canada emerges from lockdowns and restrictions, some believe the country needs a ‘green’ recovery. When it comes to sustainability and environmental responsibility, Canada’s oil and natural gas sector is already there. For decades, the industry has worked to break the link between resource development and emissions. The industry is collaborative and solutions-oriented, focused on technology and innovation to improve environmental per formance. For example, the oil sands industry alone has spent $1.4 billion to develop and share more than 1,000 technologies to reduce emission, improve water management and speed land reclamation.
To illustrate the energy industry’s nationwide reach, CAPP has created two short videos .
The oil and natural gas sector can help drive Canada’s post-pandemic economic recovery. With the right set of policies, the sector could create 120,000 new jobs, attract up to $20 billion in new investment, and increase government revenues to $7.5 billion annually to fund education, healthcare, infrastructure and social programs – and fight federal and provincial deficits.
To view the videos, go to www.context. capp.ca and search for: • Ontario supply chain • Validere Technology Support for the oil and natural gas sector means jobs and positive economic growth in Ontario. Find out more at www.capp.ca
ABOUT CAPP The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) is the voice of Canada’s upstream oil and natural gas industry. We enable the responsible growth of our industry and advocate for economic competitiveness and safe, environmentally and socially responsible performance. Phone: 403-267-1100 Website: www.capp.ca

We are a source of courage, a catalyst for hope, and a leader of movement and change. Abuse Hurts is a charitable organization that has served Canadians since 1993. The Centre’s mandate is to significantly reduce the incidence and impact of abuse through education and public awareness. Abuse Hurts operates solely on private donations with no sustaining funds from any government body. Abuse Hurts aims to raise awareness about the true cost of neglect and abuse, and currently supports dozens of organizations including children’s services, victim’s services, shelters, and other agencies that deal with tens of thousands of children, women and men whose lives have been affected by abuse. With help from the community and corporate partners, the Centre provides clothing, housewares, toiletries, small appliances and other items that the individual may need to start over, as well as provides access to support for adult survivors and their families.
You can show your support through product or financial donations, by contacting Abuse Hurts. 120 Harry Walker Pkwy N, Newmarket, ON L3Y 7B2 ꞏ (905) 727-4357
