After years of political wrangling, community complaints, environmental protests and hand wringing over the construction of the York Energy Centre in King, all’s well that ends well. The natural gas-fired peaking power plant on five acres at Dufferin Street and Miller’s Sideroad reached commercial operation May 9, adding 393 megawatts to Ontario’s electricity supply, Ontario Power Authority spokesperson Mary Bernard confirmed. Some former foes of the plant, it seems, are far friendlier. Ebullient rookie King Township Ward 6 Councillor Avia Eek said the peaker plant issue was the reason she ran for office. If you ever need to find a priest on a Monday to confess about your sin-filled weekend, just head up to Pheasant Run Golf Club. When Gordon Evans was building the East Gwillimbury course in the late 1970s, legend has it he sought divine intervention. He was having trouble finding irrigation water in the rolling hills along Warden Avenue. With 75 per cent of the construction complete, a number of wells had been drilled, but Mr. Evans was coming up dry. “Dad was getting a little panicky,” Pheasant Run president Craig Evans said. “He said if he found water, he would look after the clergy.” About a week after the vow, Gordon found

Newmarket’s lack of decision on rezoning for the proposed Slessor Square development has prompted an Ontario Municipal Board appeal. Forrest Group, which proposes to redevelop the former Yonge Street home of Slessor Motors into a series of buildings featuring retirement, condominium and rental apartment units, along with commercial and retail space, has filed the appeal, saying the town failed to make a decision on bylaw amendments within the allotted 120 days laid out in the Planning Act. The proposed development is higher and would house more people than the current urban centre zoning permits, Newmarket community services commissioner Rob Prentice said.

The move isn’t routine in Newmarket, but it has happened before, he said of the developer turning to the OMB during the planning process. The two sides continue to meet, he added. It has been more than a year since the developer submitted its application. It has also provided reports requested by the town, including planning justification, functional servicing, traffic and parking impact, two

environmental assessments and shadow studies, to name a few, according to a letter sent to the OMB.

PRE-HEARING CONFERENCE The letter requests the board schedule a pre-hearing conference as soon as possible. However, the matter could be resolved before the board becomes involved, Mr. Prentice said. “This is not a one-issue application and it is taking time to work through our concerns,” he said. The town has made recommendations to the developer on how the proposed development could be changed to better meet Newmarket’s vision as it creates an urban centre for the future. The application is in line with the official plans of the town and region, the developer maintains. However, the town believes height, density and connections to existing neighbourhoods remain issues. At a pre-hearing conference, the town and developer will be asked if they would like mediation. If they feel negotiations are no longer productive, they could opt to go straight to a full hearing. The process won’t cost Newmarket taxpayers until the town starts preparing for mediation or a full hearing, Mr. Prentice said.

As for how much the books have increased store revenue, Ms Dyer said from June to July, sales have jumped by 50 per cent. At Newmarket’s Passion Place, the effect has possibly been even more extreme. Megan Dawson, who has been working at the Bayview Avenue shop for about a year, said the book sold out in about a month and sales of items mentioned in the book skyrocketed between 300 to 400 per cent. “Fetish and bondage gear has gone way up,” she said. “The Ben Wa balls we can no longer keep in stock and we can’t get them from suppliers, as they are on back order.” She, too, has witnessed whips, love masks and various other items of the more graphic variety

Professor Ellis Cashmore, an expert in culture at Staffordshire University, predicts a spike in the number of newborns in Britain next year as a result of the book. “With the millions of copies it has sold, it makes complete sense to assume that in nine months time, we are going see a baby boom,” he said.

he old adage stands firm — sex sells. Adult, novelty and sex toy shops across York Region are reporting huge sales growth in all items related to the new literary sensation, Fifty Shades of Grey, the first in a trilogy that has obliterated sales records with 40 million copies already sold worldwide. In Britain, the book, dubbed “mommy porn” has surpassed Harry Potter with 5.3 million books sold to become a bestseller. In Vaughan, the salespeople at Love Shop, near Hwy. 7 and Kipling Avenue, said items featured in the book’s graphic and ubiquitous sex scenes have gone through the roof. Some of those items include Ben Wa balls, handcuffs, spankers and nipple clamps. “I have never seen anything like it,” said Jessica Dyer, who has been working at the shop for 1-1/2 years. “Books like this have simply not been read on this level before.” Ms Dyer, who has just started reading the book, said over the past month and a half, plenty of men, but mostly middle-aged, married women, have been flooding the store with requests for “fetish” items that range in price from $25 to $150. “All the people that come in here are just going crazy and raving about the book,” she added. “They keep saying they are not sleeping anymore because they are up all night reading these books. A lot of wives are getting ideas on how to spice up their marriages a little bit. I think it’s very important to keep relationships exciting.” She said although many of the new customers are a little shy at first, they become more relaxed and open up once they have been coaxed with a few questions about what they are looking for. “Almost every time they tell me they are reading Fifty Shades,” she added. Although many will have heard of the erotic novel, for the uninitiated, the books revolve around a relationship between college graduate Anastasia Steele and young business magnate Christian Grey. The second and third volumes by British author E.L. James, are titled Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.

The York Regional Police major fraud unit has made major inroads in a staged collision operation in York Region, it announced Thursday. As part of Project Sideswipe, investigators have made 46 arrests and are still tracking 20 other suspects. Charges include conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, fraud under $5,000, fraud over $5,000 and obstruct police officer. The police service launched the investiga-

tion in March after the Insurance Bureau of Canada conducted an investigation into nine staged collisions in the Vaughan area. In two years of investigating insurance fraud, Det.-Const. Kim Tanczos said she hasn’t seen anything of this magnitude. People were recruited by an orchestrator to be a driver or passenger in staged collisions, she said. The cars used were often old and some were in an irreparable state. When the drivers went to the police, they would say they were the only occupant in the car to avoid investigation, but would tell

the insurance company the next day there were five passengers or, in one case, seven, she said. The drivers and passengers would then falsely file injury claims, police said.

In two years of investigating insurance fraud, Det.-Const. Kim Tanczos said she hasn’t seen anything of this magnitude. All injury claims related to soft tissue, Det.-Const. Tanczos said. The claims were made for services never rendered through rehabilitation facilities, where doctors’ signatures and information were fraudulently used, according to police. “We applaud York Regional Police’s commitment to the case,” insurance bureau

investigative services vice-president Richard Dubin said. “(The victims) are all of us honest Ontario drivers.” The operation is typical of the massive insurance fraud that exists in Ontario, Mr. Dubin said, adding a conservative estimate from KPMG has insurance fraud costing Ontarians from $700 million to $1.3 billion every year. The next step in the investigation is to probe more deeply the people responsible at the second level, where suspects sought treatment and people directed the insurance claims, Insp. Keith Merith said. “We expect to have good results,” he added.

As summer holidays wind down, you may wonder if you need to make alternate care arrangements for your children in case of work action by some teachers. But the York Region District School Board and Elementary Teachers Federation remain optimistic. “The only job action that would be taken in September is if (Premier Dalton) McGuinty tries to pass legislation overturning our collective agreements,” Elementary Teachers Federation president David Clegg said. “If he thinks he can legislate good will, he is mistaken.” The federation has publicly stated it will protest such legislation. The Liberal government is urging all Ontario school boards to reach agreements with local teachers and support staff before Sept. 1 to comply with the province’s fiscal plan. However, the province is prepared to introduce legislation if school board trustees are unwilling or unable to negotiate and sign local agreements. The school board and federation have dates set in September to continue negotiations regarding the collective agreement. Negotiations have been positive and productive, Mr. Clegg said. Demolition of Glenway sad day for community “It’s a sad day for Newmarket” was the comment made by a visitor to my home after driving past the demolition site that was once the Glenway Golf and Country Club. Those sentiments have been echoed by many community members. For several decades, Glenway has served the community, providing golf and recreation opportunities and an attractive venue for weddings, meetings, art shows, church services and many other events. Tens of thousands of dollars have been raised over the years during charity golf tournaments. What saddens and concerns me even more is what the future holds if the owners of the property are permitted to add 730 housing units on the front half of the course. The province is trying to provide housing opportunities for our

expanding population, which has opened the door for developers to purchase lands, such as the golf course, and impose their vision on stable neighbourhoods and communities. Similar scenarios are playing out at several locations around Newmarket. These merit ongoing coverage so we can keep informed and educated about what is happening in our neighbourhoods and prepare ourselves to respond accordingly.

Fuelling future requires bold vision B

ritish Columbia’s Christy Clark was right to walk away from a national energy strategy promoted by Alberta’s Alison Redford at a provincial premiers meeting in Halifax in late July. She just did it for the wrong reasons. Ms Clark said she won’t sign on unless B.C. is guaranteed a bigger share of benefits from the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project. But all the money in China, Alberta and Enbridge’s bank accounts won’t be enough to undo the damage from a major leak near one of the thousand waterways the dual pipeline would cross or from a supertanker spill along the B.C. coast. B.C.’s premier should have renounced the proposal because it’s focused more on tar sands, pipelines and markets than on getting Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions under control by shifting from fossil fuel dependency to a more efficient system based on conservation and renewable energy. Canadians want and need an energy strategy. We need it to combat the everincreasing damage from global warming, to make better use of our resources, to ensure energy security for all Canadians, to respect the rights of aboriginal

David Suzuki people and to create long-term jobs and economic prosperity. That calls for a better plan than quickly digging up all our bitumen and coal and selling it to China and fracking the hell out of every piece of ground that might have some gas in it. Oil, gas and coal are valuable and finite resources. All represent energy from the sun that has been stored through photosynthesis and concentrated over millions of years. We waste a lot of it, especially when we burn it in private automobiles that use only about 15 per cent of the energy to move the car. Because a car typically weighs 10 to 20 times more than the passengers it carries, we’re only getting about 1-per-cent efficiency from the fuel.

Instead of wasting 99 per cent of this complex and useful non-renewable chemical mix, we could use more of it to make everything from bicycle tires and computer keyboards to heart valves and artificial limbs. And surely we can even find more efficient and less polluting ways to use it for fuel. A rational energy strategy — one that benefits Canadians more than multinational corporations and the repressive regime in China — would recognize the value of our limited resources, not just for fuel and products, but as a way to generate steady revenue to help us shift to renewable energy. What would such a strategy look like? It’s already too late to stop global warming, but we can contribute to making it less severe. That means shifting away from fossil fuels as quickly as possible. Canada would have to reduce its emissions by 80 per cent from 1990 levels by 2050 to do its part to avoid dangerous warming of more than 2° C. Instead of doubling oil sands production, we need to reduce the energy we get from fossil fuels by more than 70 per cent. The target is possible if we transform

our energy system over the next 40 years, according to the Trottier Energy Futures Project, a joint effort between the David Suzuki Foundation and Canadian Academy of Engineering. Renewable energy use would have to double, energy production from nonhydro renewables, such as wind, solar and biomass, would have to increase 150 times from today’s levels and we would also have to make our country 50 per cent more energy efficient. This could be accomplished by building only net-zero buildings by 2050 and retrofitting existing buildings to the highest efficiency standards. Although the 2007 plan Ms Redford and her fellow leaders hope to build on mentions renewable energy and climate change, it doesn’t offer the bold vision needed to realize the many benefits and the necessity of reducing our reliance on fossil fuels. We need a broad and comprehensive strategy. Had Ms Clark embraced and articulated such a vision, she would have been seen as a real leader.

Holland Landing’s 400 Auto Wreckers raised $17,666.20 by collecting more than 4,938 used tires as part of the Tire Take Back Event from May 28 to June 2. Ontario residents dropped off more than 139,000 used tires at 72 locations across the province. Provincewide, the event raised $357,960 for the Sunshine Foundation Children’s Charity. 400 Auto Wreckers collected the seventh most tires in the province. “We did this with the help of our community,” 400 Auto Wreckers president Tom Huehn said. “We couldn’t have been this successful without the Town of East Gwillimbury and residents.” Mr. Huehn specifically mentioned York Regional Police and farmers from the Hol-

Those anxieties were allayed by King Fire Chief Bryan Burbidge, she said, adding the pipeline has delicate sensors and can be shut down sectionally if required. “The chief assured us it is safe,” she said. While the debate surrounding the plant was more than a mere tempest in a teapot, tempers have simmered. “The malevolent issues aren’t issues anymore,” Ms Eek said. “Now that we know more, I’m not sure we would have fought it tooth and nail.” The Eeks live three kilometres from the plant. Their passion is farming. “The location is an issue,” she said. “There probably were other, better places to build it. We still don’t think prime agricultural land should have been used for that purpose. “All in all, we’re not thrilled, but you learn to make the best of it. There’s no real threat to the community.” The plant was completed on schedule and will operate during

peak demand periods in northern York Region, Ms Bernard said. Estimated to operate 260 to 1,300 hours annually to meet peak electricity demand, the exact running time won’t be known until the end of the year, plant manager Ian Hunt said. The plant runs as dispatched by the Independent Electricity System Operator, which balances electricity supply and demand in Ontario and directs its flow across the province’s transmission lines, Mr. Hunt said. The facility, staffed by seven, is running smoothly, he said, adding there are no safety or environmental issues and it’s well on its way to paying for itself. The plant’s presence remains “a bee in some people’s bonnets,” Ms Eek said. However, public relations seems to have salved some of the initial sting. The energy centre has worked with local conservation authorities to plant trees on the facility’s northern boundary, Ms Eek said. Thanks to a prevailing northwesterly wind, the plant, even when it’s running, doesn’t seem to cause any problem smells, she said. “Sorry about your luck, Newmarket,” she said with a chuckle.

They pay a nominal fee of $10 per round, which Pheasant Run donates to charity. This year, the money is going to Belinda’s Place shelter for homeless women. Like any group of golfers, the clergy members have a wide cross-section of ability, Pheasant Run club professional Mark Sharpe said. “The vast majority of people are playing for fun,” he said. “There is a small segment who really don’t know what they are doing.” One preacher who knows his way around the fairways is Jim Nolson. The part-time pastor at Grace Church in Newmarket is also a certified golf pro and runs Sportek Golf in Newmarket. “Pheasant Run makes regular golf for pastors possible. Golf can be expensive,” he said. “Monday golf is a great way to network and hold meetings.” One noticeable difference

The minister at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Markham learned about clergy golf through word of mouth. “It’s quite a gift the golf course has given us,” he said. Mr. Ma said he enjoys the chance to reconnect with pastors from the area and likens the Monday atmosphere to a conference or convention. “The employees treat us really well, even though it’s almost a complimentary round,” he said. The clergy members didn’t know of any golf courses in the GTA offering a similar professional perk, so, not surprisingly, they flock to Pheasant Run from all over to take advantage of the hospitality. All they have to do to get the discount is show proof they can marry people. The course sees between 80 and 125 clergy members every Monday, Mr. Sharpe said. The clergy members probably do a great deal of advertising for the course because of how many people they talk to in their work, Mr. Evans said. They also provide a little peace of mind. “It’s a good insurance policy having clergy around,” he said.

Mondays compared to other days on the course for Mr. Nolson is the profanity level is far lower. “I often explain what an awesome worship experience it is to be on golf courses during the week ... hearing the Lord’s name proclaimed loudly from the bushes and bunkers,” he said. From time to time, Mr. Nolson helps his fellow holy men and women with a lesson or two, but said he enjoys going to Pheasant Run Mondays to unwind in nature. Craig, Mr. Sharpe and the staff have been very accommodating, he said. “What a great service they offer us.” Gary Harder echoed Mr. Nolson’s appreciation. The longtime pastor at Toronto United Mennonite Church and Hagerman Mennonite Church in Markham has been driving to East Gwillimbury Mondays for 20 years. Part of the joy for Mr. Harder is the diverse crowd that shows up. “Most of the time, I get paired with other clergy from every denomination under the sun,” he said. Peter Ma has attended clergy Mondays for more than a decade.

You’ve got to hand it to MINI — they sure know how to pack a lot of fun into a small package. One of the newest bundles of joy in the MINI lineup is the 2012 MINI Roadster — a car that is sure to bring a smile to the face of any driving enthusiast. This sporty two-seater is based on the MINI Convertible, but the advantage of the Roadster is the trunk space that it offers. It’s not a huge cargo area (240 litres), but there is enough room for overnight bags if you want a weekend getaway. There is also a pass through for longer items. The Roadster is available in Cooper ($28,900), Cooper S ($32,900) and John Cooper Works ($39,900) trims.

My tester was the mid-level Cooper S, but it came with a variety of optional packages that took the price up to $38,420. Included were the Premium Package ($1,250) that features a front centre armrest, wind deflector, comfort access, alarm system, black sport stripes, black headlight reflectors, black mirror caps and some chrome finishing details. The Entertainment Package ($1,290) includes a top-level Harman Kardon sound system, media connect and Sirius satellite radio tuner. The tester also had the $990 Sport Package featuring sport suspension, dynamic traction control and 17-inch Conical Spoke light alloy wheels, which had been replaced on the test vehicle by 17-inch black Star Bullet alloys, a $250 stand-alone option. Metallic paint ($490) and leather interior ($1,500) rounded out the

Buick will make its IntelliLink in-car connectivity available on every 2013 model year vehicle. And the brand will help owners get acquainted with the advanced technology with real-time over-the-air help. Designed to be used with two hands on the wheel as often as possible, IntelliLink’s layout was created with an emphasis on minimizing distractions. New features for 2013 integrate more functionality into the system’s voice control commands. Owners of 2013 models can tune to a favourite station solely by voice command. Likewise, saying “More like this” while an iPod or other USB media device is playing generates a random music playlist based on the current song. The “More like this” feature uses Gracenote

media database technology to identify artist and song titles. For 2013, Gracenote’s album cover art display capability expands to include genre and artist art. To speed the use of IntelliLink and keep the driver’s eyes on the road, a new “Quick Info” icon allows access to the most popular features, audio info and turn-by-turn navigation. An added “Transfer to Private” icon allows a Bluetooth-paired phone call to be moved off the vehicle’s speakerphone. In addition to upcoming in-car updates, Buick has created a support network for customers who need help familiarizing themselves with new IntelliLink technology. Based in Oshawa the Customer Care Centre Infotainment Customer Support Team will provide one-on-one guidance for owners. New 2013 Buick models will begin arriving at dealerships later this year.

As part of the enhanced IntelliLink system offered on all Buicks, a Customer Care Centre Infotainment Customer Support Team has been set up in Oshawa to help customers familiarize themselves with the system.

light. At just 1,245 kg (2,744 lb) and with a turning radius of 10.7 m (35.1 ft), it is very easy to maneuver. The speed-sensitive power steering is precise with nice feedback and the Roadster’s handling makes you want to take the winding back roads in place of the expressway. The car feels stable and firmly planted to the road, thanks in part to a spoiler on the rear deck that deploys at 80 km/h and retracts at 60 km/h. The ride is firm, at times harsh on extremely rough pavement, but not as bad as one might expect with such a short wheelbase and sport suspension. With the top up and at speed, there is a bit of wind noise to contend with, but concentrate on the sweet gurgle of the exhaust and it easily takes your mind off of it. Rear visibility with the roof in place is poor as with most convertibles, but drop the top and your problems disappear. The Roadster was developed at the same time as the Coupe, and even with the top up, is a much more attractive vehicle. I find it better looking than the four-seat MINI Convertible, but again, it’s all personal taste. About the only two-seat convertible in the Roadster’s class is the iconic Mazda MX-5 Miata. To say that the MINI Roadster compares favorably with its Mazda competitor is a huge compliment, because the MX-5 has been such a huge success for so many years. I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of a MINI Roadster again — particularly when the sun is shining and the open road beckons.

A power top is optional ($750) if you wish, but it really seems unnecessary. The wheelbase is the same 2,467 mm as the Convertible and the height is just 1,390 mm. If you’re familiar with a MINI, you’ll be comfortable inside the Roadster from the get-go. It has the huge dinner-plate size speedometer in the centre of the dashboard and a tach and other readouts straight in front of the driver. All the gauges are round as are the heating/ cooling vents. Toggle switches on the centre stack are a neat retro touch. The front-drive MINI Roadster has three engine choices. My Cooper S model came with a twin-scroll turbocharged 1.6-litre DOHC inline four-cylinder engine, making 181 hp and 177 lb/ft of torque. The standard Cooper Roadster has the naturally aspirated 1.6-litre I-4 engine, producing 121 hp and 118 lb/ft of torque at 4,250 rpm. Meanwhile, the John Cooper Works edition has a higher output turbo, making 208 hp and torque of 184 lb/ft. All operate on premiumunleaded fuel. My tester had a sweet-shifting six-speed manual transmission, although a six-speed Steptronic automatic is available for $1,300. The short shifter is a delight to use and, combined with a nicely weighted clutch, makes going up and down through the gears a fun process. Punch the throttle and the MINI Roadster has plenty of go, jumping from 0-100 km/h in about 7.3 seconds. Driving a MINI has been compared to driving a go-kart, and while that may be a bit of a stretch, the Roadster is extremely agile and

There is nothing like being nice and warm on your patio enjoying friends or a late dinner.There are three types of heaters to choose from: Freestanding heaters are ideal for keeping a large area warm and can be moved around the garden or patio to the right position. They are either gas or electric Table top heaters are a cheaper option and are ideal for compact gardens where the table is the only area to be kept warm. Rather than evoke a sense of warmth, the first sign of red, yellow and orange outside signal the bitter winding down of summer. But with the right additions and modifications, outdoor living and entertaining can continue even well after the leaves have undergone their annual transformation. As the sun sets earlier and the nights and mornings become cooler, homeowners must find a way to counteract the elements in their outdoor living spaces. A number of different structures and enclosures are available, depending on individual desire, outdoor space and budget. George Hughes, owner of Lifestyle Windows, says screened enclosures will protect against pests such as West-Nile-carrying mosquitoes and bees and wasps — the latter two being more prominent towards the end of summer and early autumn— and, with a heavy-duty screen, limit exposure to wind. “There are three different grades of screening we put on,” he explains, “and each different

While a screened enclosure can block wind and rain effectively, adding heat to a room that isn’t thermally sealed can be more difficult, says Mr. Hughes. “There’s challenges with heating anything like that,” he says. “Some people do bring a little space heater in to take the chill off the air.” Without an enclosure, an outdoor fireplace or a fire-pit may be the best answer, especially on cool nights. JoAnne Anderson of Betz Cut Stone lists two main options for homeowners looking to incorporate an outdoor fireplace: customdesigned fireplaces, which allow for maximum choice and seamless integration into the existing landscape; and kits, which homeowners can assemble themselves. “I think for the do-it-yourselfer, it’s pretty easy to do,” she says of the kits. And homeowners will discover an almost limitless array of options for customizing. “It’s amazing how much you can do with natural stone, plus you can make them match your stone. You can get heavy stone, you can get thin-stone veneer.” Pizza night can continue well into the fall, too, says Ms Anderson, as outdoor wood-fired pizza ovens provide warmth and activity.

Call it camouflage or visual deception; I need solutions to solve a common garden problem: unwanted sights and sounds. My goal is to create a serene, soothing sanctuary. If I can’t have perfection, at least I want the illusion. My most annoying problem is a clear view of the neighbours’ patio. As well, I have a 20-metre (65- foot) length of weathered wood stockade fence. Finally, there is the gleaming white siding-covered garage that looks like a land-locked iceberg. Solutions abound from quick fixes to long-

term projects. Budget for a five year plan and feel success by accomplishing yearly solutions that can be enhanced over time. Always remember to check local bylaws and talk to your neighbours first for any improvements close to the boundary. The patio view and noise problem is most easily solved with a section of fence topped by latticework. Soften the scene by planting a fast growing vine, such as golden hops (humulus lupulus “aureus”) with acid green foliage or trumpet vine (campsis radicans) with orange flowers. Another idea is to plant two-metre (sixfeet) columnar cedars between free-standing fence panels set at a 20-degree angle to the lot line. This will give the illusion of more depth. The sound will be baffled and your eyes will be attracted to this unusual feature rather than to the view beyond. Placing a water feature such as a small wall-mounted fountain or bubbling rock in the garden will help to mute the cacophony of unwanted sounds. The stockade fence could be easily converted into a more appealing barrier with landscape art. One answer would be to opt for fence cedars, purchased by the linear foot and planted in two offset parallel rows. This hedge will require intensive watering the first year and about five years before it fills in and softens the existing fence lines. An edgier answer See CHOOSE page 24

Beach volleyball duo wins provincial silver Newmarket, Oak Ridges athletes also play for Aurora Storm BY MELONY TEAGUE

Newmarket’s Laura Kong won a silver medal in beach volleyball. It wasn’t the Olympics, but Kong and her partner, Oak Ridges’ Rachel Woock, placed second in their age group in the Ontario Volleyball Association Tour Beach Volleyball Ontario Championships at Ashbridges Bay Beach in Toronto July 28 and 29. Last year, the girls placed ninth in the same championship, so they were surprised to make the finals. “We decided to play for fun, knowing we are getting a medal now, so, either way, we still win,” Woock said of the team’s attitude heading into the final. The two have played beach volleyball together for the last three years, meeting while playing indoor volleyball for the Aurora Storm Bolts, which won the last two U-15 girls Ontario championships. They played in four other tournaments leading up to the VA Tour championship, including one in Cobourg July 15 in which they won gold in their division. Kong is the setter for the Bolts and the two anticipate each other’s moves in beach volleyball. Diving for the ball is Woock’s favorite part of the game. “I get lots of sand in the face, but it’s worth it,” she said with a laugh. “It’s fun and you have more responsibility when playing beach volleyball. In court volleyball, I am a middle, so I tend to be in the back row ... and don’t usually pass, so it’s nice to be able to go for the ball.” In beach volleyball, there are only two players per side, instead of six, as in indoor volleyball. Playing and running in sand is more demanding and Woock said she likes the strategy involved. She was introduced to volleyball through her older sister, following in her footsteps when she was 8 years old. Woock’s younger sister plays, too.

She takes me to all my practices and goes to all my tournaments,” said Woock, who attends Richmond Green Secondary School and starts Grade 10 in September. “The girls came into provincials ranked 10th, so there were no expectations for them,” Woock’s mother, Sue, said. “They just played for fun, so it was a real bonus they got as far as they did.”

The girls have been following the Olympics and aspire to participate in volleyball at that level one day. “They look to be extremely good players and I want to be there one day, whether it is beach or indoor. I have been following both,” Woock said. “I really hope to get a scholarship for university somewhere, hopefully in Canada, and then on to the Olympics.”
