The term ‘tattoo’ derives from a 17th-century Dutch phrase ‘doe den tap toe’ (turn off the tap), a signal to tavern owners each night, played by a regiment’s Corps of Drums, to turn off the taps of their ale kegs, so that the soldiers would retire to their lodgings.

Access to the Tattoo: The matchless location of the Tattoo – high above the skyline of the oldest and most popular part of the city may present access difficulties for some. There is a short but steeply inclined walk of 80 metres up Castlehill, the old cobbled approach to the Esplanade. There is then a further 60 metre walk on average, followed by steps up to the spectator stands where generally, the seating is quite steeply tiered.
