Isle of Harris Dunvegan Castle Otter
Day Four – Included tour of South Uist and
Eriskay This morning, you’ll join our tour manager and cross the causeway to South Uist, the Western Isles’ second largest island. Stunningly beautiful, the island is a stronghold of the Gaelic language. Here, the crofting industries of peat-cutting and seaweed-gathering are still an important part of everyday life. You’ll visit the Kildonan Museum, which introduces the island’s archaeology and history, and includes a collection of South Uist artefacts. You’ll also cross the 1650m-long causeway to the idyllic island of Eriskay (just three miles by two), immortalised in Compton Mackenzie’s bestselling novel ‘Whisky Galore’.
Day Five – Included cruise to the Isle of Harris
An hour-long ferry crossing takes us from the Island of Beneray to Leverburgh on the Isle of Harris. From here, you’ll drive to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis where you can check into your next hotel, overlooking the grounds of historic Lews Castle and the town’s 18-hole golf course. Stornoway is the main port on the island, and home to a handful of charming artisan shops and restaurants.
Day Six – Included excursion to the Callanish
Stones Though a single landmass, Lewis and Harris have their own distinct identities and landscapes. Harris is an island split in two - high mountains and rocky coastline to the east; unspoilt Atlantic beaches to the west. You’ll start the tour with a visit to see Rodel Church, which is possibly the grandest medieval building in the Western Isles. You’ll also get to explore the little fishing port of Tarbert, with its 15-century keep. Back amid the rolling moorland and freshwater lochs of Lewis, you’ll visit the standing stones of Callanish - 50 ancient stones arranged in rays around a central ring and easily the most mysterious sight in the islands, stop at Carloway Broch, a 2000-year-old fortified dry-stone tower, and visit a reconstructed Blackhouse Village with typical crofting buildings - for a fascinating insight into the lives of the islands’ past inhabitants. Day Seven – Included visit to the Butt of Lewis On your final morning, you’ll head to the Butt of Lewis, at the island’s northern tip, to take in the vast views of the remote landscape and the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse, before you say your farewells. In the early afternoon, you’ll begin the two-hour ,45-minute crossing to Ullapool before transferring to the last hotel in Gairloch, set on the shores of Lake Gairloch. This mansion-like hotel serves as the perfect place to reflect on your adventures, boasts beautiful views of Gairloch Bay and is within walking distance of the Gairloch Heritage Museum. Day Eight – Fly back to the UK Journey back to the airport, this morning, to catch your flight home after your special Hebridean Island holiday.
