Iceland – Reykjavík & the Northern Lights

Discover Europe’s most surprising capital, explore the ‘Land of Fire and Ice’ and search for a celestial phenomenon.

Northern Lights, Reykjavík

Strokkur Geyser

Enjoy a break with a difference, as you fly to the ‘Land of Fire and Ice’ to explore one of Europe’s most surprising and welcoming cities, together with its surrounding glaciated landscape of smouldering volcanoes, plunging waterfalls, bubbling thermal pools and spouting geysers. With the chance perhaps to witness the extraordinary Aurora Borealis, a sight that has captivated and bewildered generations, this is a simply irresistible few days away.

An included, guided city tour introduces fascinating Reykjavík and its surroundings on your first morning. See landmarks such as the Presidential Residence and the towering Hallgrim’s Church. An optional excursion then offers the chance to take a dip in the mineral-laden waters of the Blue Lagoon. You can also join the optional Golden Circle tour to see Þingvellir - the green expanse where Iceland’s ancient parliament (the Alþingi) used to meet. Here, you can stop beside the (near-extinct) original Geysir and time the gap between the eruptions from the nearby, and far more frequent, Strokkur waterspout. The highlight of the tour comes this evening, when you’ll head out of the city to search for the Aurora Borealis - the enchanting Northern Lights - flickering in the Icelandic night sky. Should you be lucky enough to see it, the phenomenon is a sight to behold.

fun fact...

Did you know that Galileo Galilei, the Italian astronomer, first named the Northern Lights in 1619?
