Superflex –Essential to EVERY toolbox
from DIY News July 2024
No toolbox is complete without a selected range of abrasives to cater for cutting, grinding, and sanding applications.
Grinding Technique's locally manufactured Superflex range not only offers a wide variety of cutting and grinding media, but also boasts a diverse selection of coated products and surface conditioning abrasives.
When it comes to choosing the correct abrasives for hand tools, it is important to know the application, and the desired result. Not only will the correct abrasive ensure the longevity of the hand tool, but it will also result in a high work rate efficiency and successful completion of any job.
One of the most important factors to consider when it comes to abrasives, is the type of material that will be used for the application.
As abrasives are manufactured for either ferrous or non-ferrous materials, information displayed on the disc label should be considered when choosing a particular disc. Contamination can easily occur when using the same abrasives on multiple materials.
Disc labels marked for ‘Steel’ or ‘Metal’ , are suitable for ‘ferrous metals’ and not ideal for ‘non-ferrous metals’. Aluminium, being a nonferrous metal, has very different characteristics to mild or normal carbon steels. Using a steel cutting disc on aluminium will result in the edge of the disc becoming clogged and heating up, causing stress and possible disc failure and breakage. Identifying and using the correct abrasive product, whether it be for cutting, grinding, or blending, is core to the successful completion of any job.
Along with conventional cuttingand-grinding discs, the Superflex range also boasts special purpose cutting-andgrinding discs.
Dome-shaped and classified as a Type 28, the Superflex Curve cut allows for effortless cutting of multiple sizes of circles and curves from sheet metal with only one disc.
Locally manufactured and available in various diameters, this disc is the ideal tool for handheld radii and contour cutting. Typical applications include cutting wheel fenders on custom cars, ellipses in large bore pipes for T-joining, and IBR or corrugated roofing to fit curved profiles, and installing of extractor fans and turbines.

Another versatile tool is the Superflex Dual Purpose Cut & Grind abrasive disc. Replacing a two-step application, one disc can now be used for both cutting, and light grinding. Previously, a cutting disc would have to be changed out with a grinding disc for burr removal after the initial cutting application, while the Cut Grind allows for both these applications to be completed safely with only one disc. The Superflex Dual Purpose Cut & Grind abrasive disc is ideal for weld blending and cleaning, where the thicker Angle Grinding discs would remove too much base material.
Most cutting-and-grinding discs are available in standard sizes to fit both the 115-and-230mm diameter angle grinders. When selecting a disc, look out for a premium quality brand that offers fast and smooth cuts with high stock removal, durability, and longevity.
Available in a diverse range of products, nonwoven abrasives offer the perfect solution to surface preparation and fine finishing.
Hand pads and rolls are primarily used for light cleaning and processing, polishing surfaces using orbital sanders or hand-guided grinding and available in specifications from coarse to very-fine. Longevity is guaranteed thanks to the abrasive impregnated into the entire fleece of the product and not only located on the surface. These products provide complete flexibility to the geometry of the workpiece surface.
Non-Woven Flap discs will remove and blend rough scratch marks on the surface with no discolouration due to the multi-dimensional flap design reducing heat on application.
Unitised and Polishing discs are also available and when used in conjunction with polishing paste, will achieve a mirror finish in no time. Superflex products are available from major retailers.
