Choosing between sealants and adhesives
ADHESIVES AND SEALANTS
Adhesives or sealants?
Educating shoppers about the differences between adhesives and sealants
Consumers often walk into a hardware store and are faced with a wide range of sealants and adhesives, sending many into a quandary as to what to choose.
Sales staff are sought out for advice and guidance, and it helps the sales staff to know some basics to enable them to give their customer the right advice and solution. Den Braven shares some basic points and tips.
A good starting point is to find out what the customers problem and need is.
SEALANT OR ADHESIVE?
• The main difference between adhesives and sealants is that adhesives are primarily used to bond materials together. • Sealants are made from flexible material which makes them ideal for areas where expansion and contraction are of concern.
Sealants
The main aim of a sealant is to seal assemblies and joints or gaps. Sealants have a paste consistency to allow filling of gaps between substrates, like Acryl-W, used to seal cornices to ceilings. They cure to form a durable, tough rubbery seal and have good weather resistance. Some sealants, such as Silicone-Sanitary are fungal resistant ideal for use on sanitary ware – in the bathroom and the kitchen.
Adhesives
The adhesive’s main purpose is to bind one surface to another, not to seal the space in between the objects. High Tack is a permanent adhesive, ideal for bonding dissimilar substrates.

ADHESIVES AND SEALANTS
Once you have established if it is a sealant or adhesive that is needed, there are a few key questions to ask the customer prior to recommending a product:
• Indoors or outdoors? • What substrate? • What is the area of use: for example, a bathroom, sealing cornices to a wall and ceiling, or an expansion joint in brickwork? • Will the seal require painting?
Look for Den Braven’s ‘how to’ videos on its website, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram sites and learn to tackle typical DIY jobs in the home.
The video’s cover how to select and use an application gun, tips on cutting the cartridge nozzle, recommending specific products for an area of application, preparing the surface, applicating and finishing, with lots of handy DIY tips thrown in.
Applicating correctly is a critical step in the success of the job. Den Braven recommends watching these videos to broaden your knowledge and to aid you in guiding your customers to making the right product choice.

LIGHTING
Q: What overhead fixtures will work best in a room?
Any large or low-hanging fixture will make the space feel even smaller. Look for a ceiling fixture that is no more than 40cm in height. You don’t want a fixture that will draw attention to the fact that the ceiling is low, so recessed downlights or a flush-mount ceiling light will work best.
Q: Due to my bedroom being compact in size, my bedside tables are small and won’t fit a lamp. What solution do you suggest?
Pendant lights are a great bedside fixture alternative, but if your space is small then these can just make the room look cluttered. A small, neat wall sconce on either side of the bed is a great alternative and is an opportunity to add an element of interest to an oftenblank space in the room.
Q: I loved the look of a large, ornate fixture, but will it work in a small space?
Large decorative fixtures such as chandeliers and pendants can work in a small space but only if the ceiling is high. For example, an entrance hall or foyer with relatively small floor space but double volume ceilings can accommodate such a fixture. If the room is small and the ceilings are relatively low, then opt for a decorative ceiling fixture that has a low profile but a large diameter.

Q: What lighting tips do you suggest to make a room feel bigger?
Try using the wall wash technique. This requires you to shine a light directly onto a feature on a wall, for example, a bookshelf, cabinetry, or a painting. When the light illuminates the object of interest, it makes it stand out and this expands the perceived boundaries of the room, creating depth. Adjustable track lights work best for achieving this effect.
Q: What do you suggest for illuminating a small bathroom?
While overhead lighting is key, it’s not enough for task-oriented activities such as applying makeup or shaving. Therefore, lighting your vanity mirror is a must. But if wall space is an issue and you can’t add sconces then a mirror light is the way to go. This type of fixture is a mirror and light in one and is a highly functional addition to any bathroom regardless of size.
