On the cutting edge of canning for more than 70 years
John Bean Technologies (JBT) has been servicing the local canning industry with cutting edge equipment for more than 70 years. One of these technologies is the Pressure Rotary Steriliser (RPS) which has been part of the JBT catalogue for 100 years. It was recognised as an engineering landmark by the American Society of Mechanical engineers in 1982.
Even today these machines remain the best and most efficient way to sterilise or process round cans. Some still operational in South Africa were manufactured in the 1960s.
The latest machine supplied to a local canning company in Johannesburg took nine months to complete due to lockdown and other COVID-19 related restrictions. In total the two shells (1 Pressure Cooker and 1 Pressure Cooler) weighed in at a hefty 25tons each having a of processing cans at 130°C and 170kPa, it can be seen as a continuous pressure cooker.
One shell being used to heat and cook the canned products and the other cool time down again. With cans running continuously on the one end of the machine and out the other end. compared to a traditional batch retort system loaded by hand.
MADE FROM LOCALLY PROCURED MATERIALS
The machine was designed and built by JBT Engineers in Cape town from locally procured materials. JBT undertook 70% of diameter of 2.3m and a length of 9m. Capable specialise in line forgings, large machining laser cutting, bending etc. All pressure vessels built in Cape town is designed and manufactured in accordance with the ASME Pressure vessel manufacturing code.
HIGH DEGREE OF QUALITY
JBT prides itself on maintaining a high degree of quality in all its manufactured equipment.
In addition to the sterilising equipment JBT also offers a range of complimentary equipment to the canning industry sourced from within the JBT family of manufacturing locations around the world. These include fillers and seamers.
JBT Cape Town has also recently manufactured other equipment for export including Rotary atmospheric coolers for the USA and Small scale “plug and play” type citrus juice processing equipment for a company in Tanzania. Earlier in 2020 the company celebrated its 70th birthday with the successful completion of a TASTE evaporator for the concentration of fruit juice. This project was executed in collaboration with our manufacturing plant in Araraquara, Brazil. To cut down on delivery time the components manufactured for the machine were split between the two locations with final assembly, test, installation and commissioning handled by the team in Cape Town.
