Natural, sustainable oils for beauty care
Symrise developed a sustainability programme inMadagascar 13 years ago, involving over7 000 farmers across90 villages. This initiative, originally centred on vanilla production, has expanded to the cultivation and production of botanicals plants. It sees farmers benefit from training on cultivation and the distribution of seeds and plants for new crops.
As part of the programme, 2 500 tamanu plants were distributed in2015 and planted. Tamanu cultivation of the is nondestructive and helps limit the coast erosion by stabilising the soils. It provides a naturel barrier against strong winds in this cyclonic area. Up to 300 families are involved in the tamanu oil production chain. The sourcing initiative now extends beyondMadagascar to committed developments in Kenya and Tanzania.
MIRACLE OILS COLLECTION
Symrise’s tamanu oil is cultivated inMadagascar. The tamanu nuts are collected during the dry season, when they fall to the ground. Because the farmers collecting the nuts are not always those who work with the vanilla, the tamanu oil production to many people in the region. Once shelled, the seeds are left to sun dry for one to three months. After they are sun dried, the seeds are cold pressed to obtain the rich green tamanu oil.
The company also specialises in sustainable baobab oil from Tanzania. This sourcing programme involves over 1 000 people, who are mostly women, developing additional revenues from organic farming. The fruit pulp is ground into a fine nutritious fruit powder, or cold pressed to produce baobab oil while the shell can be used as biomass for sustainable energy production. For its moringa oil, Symrise has established a partnership with small scale farmers which seeks to transfer expertise to promote better agricultural practices. The moringa seeds are extracted from distinctive fruit pods in the shape of drumsticks. The oil is then cold pressed in Kenya. •
