A specialist South African business
Founded in 1980 by Laurence Solomons and Sam Hertzakowitz, Hersol Manufacturing Laboratories (Hersol) has grown exponentially. Fast forward to 2019, the Johannesburg-based company remains a key player in the complementary medicines (CAMs) manufacturing landscape in South Africa.
Today Hersol occupies over 12 000m² of manufacturing and warehousing space and testing laboratories, employing approximately 400 qualified people at various levels. The company is run by a competent management team, which over sees all aspects of production. The team’s mantra is ‘built-inquality, delivery, and price’.
Using state of the art technology, the company manufactures a wide variety of dosage forms specifically tailored to local market demands and in line with the latest global trends. It can pack products using all types of packing specifications including blister packs.
Even with the advent of new technology, Hersol remains relevant, cutting edge and quality driven. The expansion of its manufacturing plantin 2012 indicated a pivotal moment in Hersol’s growth as a South African company, as it flourished through automation and with new lines and equipment. By default, the company was able to improve on its efficiency, while continuing to support local suppliers.
A top notch facility
Over the years, Hersol has established extensive facilities that feature, among other things, a fully equipped laboratory to ensure the quality of raw materials and finished products. The modern manufacturing areas used for granulation, compression, encapsulation and coating put the company in the upper ranks of pharmaceutical production, in South Africa.
In an ever-changing local context, Hersol is unique in generating its own power supply, which gives the company the advantage of uninterrupted production time.
Hersol is proudly South African in all areas of production and packing. Its finished product laboratory consists of experienced staff who are responsible for analysing all products, based on validated methods. All the instruments used to perform the required tests are calibrated by SANAS accredited third party companies, ensuring accuracy and precision at all times.
Two senior microbiologists and a micro laboratory assistant are employed in the micro laboratory, while the QC manager and a laboratory manager oversee its efficient running. The laboratory has been accredited by the National Department of Health, which issues a certificate of compliance. Hersol’s micro lab is home to some of the few Biolumix systems used in South Africa, ensuring a quicker turn around for lab results compared to the conventional method of five days.
