:Understanding Black Histories (27/10, Z-Arts, 5pm - 7.30pm) Understanding Black Histories (24/10) first analysed the evolution of Manchester through the etymology of its name. A postcard purchased at Manchester Art Gallery shop was used to highlight the fact that Manchester has been shaped + defined by migration.

The postcard featured a reproduction of a mural entitled “The Romans Building a Fort at Mancenion A.D.60”. It revealed that themes usually associated with Black History, such as slavery, colonisation + migration, are embedded in the early history of Manchester. It also challenged widespread assumptions about Black presence in Manchester. The website analysis of the web page dedicated to Malcolm X focused on the relationship between local + global identities.
