THIRTY-THIRD ANNUAL Christmas New Orleans StylE

Dear Friends, It is a pleasure to welcome you to the 2017 Christmas New Orleans Style, a month-long celebration of holiday feasting, soulstirring music, unique shopping, and heart-warming traditions. Christmas New Orleans Style is one of our premier events for the whole family, with special activities including Celebration in the Oaks in City Park, candlelight caroling in Jackson Square, free concerts at the St. Louis Cathedral and St. Augustine Church, the Krewe of Jingle Holiday Parade, and NOLA ChristmasFest at the New Orleans Morial Convention Center complete with ice skating. Let our city’s legendary chefs introduce you to the New Orleans Reveillon, an old French holiday dining tradition. Every year, affordable menus are offered at celebrated restaurants all over the city. If you’d like to learn how to prepare our fabulous Creole holiday dishes for yourself, our famous chefs will share their secrets on WWL-TV during the 12 Days of Reveillon. If architecture is your passion, tour the mansions of the Garden District and the French Quarter, which are even more spectacular during the holidays. And when gift-giving, consider something unique to New Orleans from our local shops and boutiques on Royal Street, Magazine Street, and in the Arts District. Of course, there’s no such thing as a “silent night” in New Orleans. Follow the trumpet to Bourbon, Frenchmen, and Fulton streets for authentic New Orleans music. New Orleans is also home to A NOLA New Year’s Eve, named one of the nation’s liveliest New Year’s Eves and the countdown to our Tricentennial celebration in 2018. And the new year starts with the world-famous Allstate Sugar Bowl’s hosting of the National College Playoff game in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Again, welcome to New Orleans! It is a pleasure again to wish you and yours a happy holiday season and a most wonderful New Year! Sincerely,

Mitchell J. Landrieu Mayor of New Orleans

THIRTY-THIRD ANNUAL Christmas New Orleans StylE

Historical Characters LOUISIANA HISTORY ALIVE! IN THE FRENCH QUARTER Discover New Orleans’ unique heritage - face to face. The martyrs and marauders, heroes and villains, divas and desperadoes of New Orleans’ past walk the streets of this historic city throughout the holiday season. Ever wonder what it was like when steamboats plied the Mississippi River, buggies and barouches lined the cobblestone streets, and citizens celebrated the holidays with a traditional Reveillon meal? Discuss the layout of Jackson Square with its designer the Baroness Pontalba, inquire about tinctures and remedies with pharmacist Louis Dufilho, or watercolors with John James Audubon. Ask Marie Laveau about the origins of the Voodoo Doll, Madame Begue’ for one of her prized recipes, or the privateer Jean Lafitte on the difficulties of navigating Louisiana’s bayous. Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during the first four weekends of December, Louisiana History Alive characters will be visiting the French Quarter, departing from the Bourbon Orleans Hotel at 717 Orleans each day at 11am to stroll through the Vieux Carre streets and along the waterfront. The characters will visit Jackson Square every day at noon and are excited to share with tourists and locals alike their preparations for the Tricentennial Celebration in 2018. Some figures you could encounter, in addition to those already mentioned, include daguerreotypist Jules Lion, actress Lola Montez, the “bread lady” Margaret Haughery, Louisiana’s first licensed female doctor, Dr Elizabeth Cohen, riverboat gamer George Devol, Lt Gov CC Antoine, and of course it would not be Christmas without that jolly Cajun fella, Papa Noël.

The early days of Mardi Gras were far from inclusive. Membership to krewes and balls was reserved for straight white men. Everyone else was forced to celebrate in secret or risk arrest. In the late 1950s, a group of gay men defied the status quo and formed the Krewe of Yuga.

Their first ball was predictably raided. Undeterred, they reorganized and partied on. Though Yuga is now gone, ten gay krewes carry on its legacy, including the Krewe of Armeinius which will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2018. Tickets are available for members and tourists alike. From a young age, Trombone Shorty has been inseparable from his horn. So when his mother, Lois, brought him to see Bo Diddley at Jazz Fest, he took it with him and played along with the legendary bluesman from the crowd. Diddley took notice and had the crowd pass the 4-year-old boy and his horn to the stage. He blew everyone away.

Today, Trombone Shorty closes out the final day of Jazz Fest himself, and other members of his talented family (The Andrews) split time between their hometown and touring the world.

– May 4, 1990

Bo pulled Shorty on stage.

Reveillon

Pronounced ’rĕ-vē-ŏn (Hint: the ‘L’s are silent!)

AT NEW ORLEANS FINEST RESTAURANTS In the late 1800s and the first decade or so of the 20th century, New Orleans’ Creole families celebrated Reveillon (derived from the French word reveiller, which means “to awaken”) twice during the holidays. The first Reveillon came after Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve, when families returned from St. Louis Cathedral to break a daylong fast. This meal typically consisted of egg dishes, sweetbreads, and Creole specialties, such as daube glacé. It often ended with a cake filled with a fruit confection, dripping with wine or rum, and topped with whipped cream. New Year’s Eve brought another Reveillon, usually shared among several families. This more elaborate meal featured eggnog, fancy pastries, meringues, sugar sculptures, and crystallized fruits. By late afternoon, families would return home to a light supper followed by a night of singing and dancing–with wine and whiskey for the gentlemen and cordials and liqueurs for the ladies. Today’s Reveillon is celebrated nightly during the Christmas season in restaurants throughout the City. Menus combine ageless Creole cuisine with more contemporary New Orleans dishes, but the spirit of the past remains. In fact, some of our Reveillon restaurants–Antoine’s, Commander’s Palace, Galatoire’s, and Tujague’s—are more than 100 years old! Revel in nostalgia and join us for Reveillon – the authentic taste of Christmas New Orleans Style!

Reveillon menus are categorized in two ways:

Reveillon Traditional A rich, special occasion menu created in the style of, and inspired by, the tastes of the original Creoles.

Reveillon Contemporary A rich, special occasion menu utilizing preparation techniques and products of the modern day not necessarily available to the original Creoles. Prices do not include tax or gratuity, and may not be combined with other promotional offers or discounts. Available holiday dates are noted in each listing, but please check the website in advance to confirm: (CE) Open Christmas Eve; (CER) Open Christmas Eve serving Reveillon Dinner; (CD) Open Christmas Day; (CDR) Open Christmas Day serving Reveillon Dinner; (NYE) Open New Year’s Eve; (NYER) Open New Year’s Eve serving Reveillon Dinner; (NYD) Open New Year’s Day; (NYDR) Open New Year’s Day serving Reveillon Dinner.

whenever they felt like it. The “Storming of the Sazerac” continues to be celebrated – fancy hats and all – every September, now at The Roosevelt New Orleans, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel. Come celebrate with us this holiday season and start your story with #OneTimeInNOLA.

REVEILLON MENUS

Until 1949, women were only allowed in the Roosevelt Hotel’s renowned Sazerac Bar on Mardi Gras Day. Thankfully, this changed one September afternoon when owner Seymour Weiss opened his doors to a group of women who demanded the right to a stiff drink

Women stormed a bar meant just for men.

Reveillon on the Rocks!

HOLIDAY COCKTAILS: A NEW TRADITION The Reveillon dinner has been celebrated in homes and restaurants all over New Orleans since the 1850s. Once again, local bartenders put a modern twist on the tradition, creating both classic and original cocktails to celebrate the Reveillon, one-sip-at-a-time. Beginning December 1st and continuing until the last toast on New Year’s Eve, and at some spots lasting through Twelfth Night (January 6th), visit the following establishments and say “Cheers to the Holiday Season” with a variety of spirited libations. Available holiday dates are noted in each listing, but please check the website in advance to confirm: (CE) Open Christmas Eve; (CEC) Open Christmas Eve serving Reveillon Cocktail; (CD) Open Christmas Day; (CDC) Open Christmas Day serving Reveillon Cocktail; (NYE) Open New Year’s Eve; (NYEC) Open New Year’s Eve serving Reveillon Cocktail; (NYD) Open New Year’s Day; (NYDC) Open New Year’s Day serving Reveillon Cocktail.
