Did you know, that there have been approximately 150 awesome team members throughout the history of Ikariam.org?
A big interview with our new Board Admin Twisty
DJ Ruby Rhod This time we had a chance to interview our lovley new Board Admin TwistedFairytale.
- Hello Twisty, thank you very much for accepting interview with us TwistedFairytale: You're welcome, thanks for asking! -My pleasure! -For start, can you please tell us something about yourself? TwistedFairytale: Well I'm a young-ish guy, I work a lot of hours, have a baby daughter and 4y/o step daughter -Sounds lovley TwistedFairytale: Spend a lot of time online, obviously. Which is pretty much my main 'hobby' at the moment I guess. TwistedFairytale: Almost all my time is taken up either with family, work or online. But I'm certainly not complaining -Do you have any hobbies? TwistedFairytale: Well maybe the work, in real life - Well we all love having you arround here - When did you first start playing Ikariam? TwistedFairytale: February, 2008. And registered on the board in late march of that year. TwistedFairytale: I saw a banner add in another browser game, liked the pictures, so came to take a looky - So almost from when it was launched? TwistedFairytale: Yes, within the initial weeks of it's launch - Awesome! - Was Ika.org your first Ikariam community? TwistedFairytale: Yep it sure was - Do you still play? TwistedFairytale: Yes, but very casually lol I'm often inactive, so come farm me I guess? 4|Page
- Nobody dares TwistedFairytale: I also play a little in the Australian servers, but also not seriously - In what server(s) do you play in here? TwistedFairytale: I play in Delta. Although I've never achieved much within the game TwistedFairytale: I fell in love with the board and community soon after I joined TwistedFairytale: And it's been my main focus since I suppose <3 - We do have some great spammers here, don't we TwistedFairytale: We do indeed lol A strong tradition of spam (in the appropriate areas of course) - When did you first join the team? TwistedFairytale: Honestly I can't remember the exact date without going back and checking my thread TwistedFairytale: But it was within a few weeks of registering on the board I believe - Awesome - Did you plan on joining the team right from the beggining? Or did it just kind of happened? TwistedFairytale: Actually I'd gotten into an argument on the forum with one of the board's first Mods, Blackeye Vuk. TwistedFairytale: Long story short it ended with me chatting to the board admin at the time and soon after joining the team TwistedFairytale: Blackeye Vuk became a good friend too, he's a great guy and Mod and I miss him on the boards hehe - Well he still spams occasionaly TwistedFairytale: Yes he does, not enough though ! - Admin was Eccy back then? TwistedFairytale: Yes, eclectic - I also spied out approximate time when you joined team. April 14th TwistedFairytale: Well there you go TwistedFairytale: I was close xD - Did you ever picture yourself becoming a BA at first? TwistedFairytale: No, I really love Moderating and I never thought initially of moving beyond that - What changed that you still decided to move upwards? TwistedFairytale: It wasn't really a decision I made. The Admins at the time felt I was doing a good job and I'd be promoted, or rather offered a promotion. TwistedFairytale: And of course it's a honour for me so I gladly accepted! - Lovley! TwistedFairytale: I've left and returned a few times over the years though, starting afresh as a Moderator 3 times I think. - And yet, you are a BA now - What aspect of your job do you like the most? TwistedFairytale: Dealing with people. It's always fun, rewarding too when you manage to make those people happy with the results. - I belive it is - Do you ever regret that you joined board team instead of game team at first? TwistedFairytale: No, never TwistedFairytale: I'm a board-person 5|Page
- Cool! - Who do you think has the hardest position to fill in the team? TwistedFairytale: In the Board Team? Well every role has different challenges and demands. But because they're on the ground working, directly involved with daily issues, Moderators themselves probably have one of the most demanding roles. TwistedFairytale: If they have busy sections, then certainly - What about in game team? And what about all together? TwistedFairytale: I'm don't have any personal Game Team experience to draw from, so I couldn't say TwistedFairytale: But I imagine their situation could be thought of in the same way as I described the Board Team - So you think moderators and GOs have the hardest positions to fill? TwistedFairytale: One of the most demanding, certainly! - Have you played any other of GF games? TwistedFairytale: I've dabbled a little in Gladiatus and Wild Guns in the past - Sounds like fun! - How long a day do you spend arround the board and game? TwistedFairytale: Depends whether I'm at home or work (and which job I'm at) TwistedFairytale: A minimum of an hour or two, sometimes up to 12 hours if I'm working a shift in real-life and have internet access TwistedFairytale: But don't tell the boss D; - Awesome! - Do you have a favorite teamler? TwistedFairytale: lol no. The team is like Voltron Glenwing: *points gun* TwistedFairytale: I'm not sure what bodily part I'd form though TwistedFairytale: Maybe a leg - What about a favorite user? TwistedFairytale: Well, this one I can be a bit biased with TwistedFairytale: Heidee, she's my girlfriend in the real world and she also plays Ikariam TwistedFairytale: And spams it's social corner! - What about a favorite spammer? TwistedFairytale: It's too hard to pick just one! - Name 2 then! TwistedFairytale: Well, recently I've noticed nemenku and Tiarra are pretty consistant in the spammage - What is the funniest thing that has happened to you in Ikariam and/or Ika board? TwistedFairytale: Oh gosh, now I'll have to dredge the memory banks - Yeah you have been a while, belive much fun stuff has happened TwistedFairytale: I don't think anything particularly funny has happened TO me. But the funniest thing I can remember was a 'Supergreen day' that the Mods had a few years ago TwistedFairytale: We all changed our avatars and signatures to pictures of DJ Ruby Rhod, from The Fifth Element for the day - To wrap it up, do you have any advice for new users? TwistedFairytale: In regards to the board? Lurk moar! 6|Page
TwistedFairytale: The best way to learn, starting off, is to simply read and observe TwistedFairytale: Read the questions others have asked, the discussions that've been had TwistedFairytale: The mistakes people have made TwistedFairytale: Saves jumping into things head first and getting lost or running foul of the rules - I hope that it will help someone! - What about advice for new teamlers and people wishing to join the team? TwistedFairytale: Well TwistedFairytale: Generally, be as good a user as you can on the board. Show a desire to help others and contribute to the community at large. It's no different to what we do in the team anyway, so naturally demonstrating those traits would give you a good foundation to apply to the Team. - Thanks! It was a pleasure to do this int with you TwistedFairytale: Thanks for having me! <3
Formula's faith
T
he temple is a place of faith, belief and reflection. Priests live here, paying homage to their God and spreading his word throughout the island. You can also pray for miracles here, as long as you pay your respect. Question: Is there a formula that calculates the maximum total faith of an island? Maximum possible total faith is given by: (Y / Z) x 20 where, Y - Total capacity of the cities with temples. Z - Number of priests in all cities with temples. In other words, take the total capacity of cities with a temple, divide it by the total number of priests of all active players and multiply this by 20. To have 100% faith in the island, you need one priest for every 5 people. I talked to Саурон from the US server Xi, who has been playing this game for a while in American servers as well as Bulgarian ones and he was so kind to cooperate and share his opinion and knowledge about temples with us. So, here he comes:
My long years spent in this game have shown me that temples are, above all, team work between islanders or migrating to an empty island and raising your faith as much as you want/can. The first option is the best; if there is a kind and friendly relationship between island mates and everyone takes care of his own temple, the problem is easily solved. So, what I mean is that you have to be diplomatic as well as active in this game in order to succeed. If you do not have cooperating "neighbors", it's a completely different matter. You will have to calculate what's the percentage of their total island conversion faith and make up for them so that you can use your miracle to the best of its ability. I haven't played actively recently, but that's all I remember about miracles from before. Hope I helped and the best of luck to you all. May ambrosia be with you! Thanks, Саурон, for your time.

The Board in 2013
W
elcome to the second edition of our Board's newspaper. As you may have noticed we've adopted a new format this time around, brought some new faces into the news team and as a result changed our approach slightly in terms of content. In this edition you'll noticed articles on several game-related topics as well as interviews with players and staff, and generally a content that's richer in things that are relevant to you the players. Some of the articles address recent changes or additions to the game, such as the introduction of Piracy. However it's not only the game itself which has undergone some changes and updates recently - this year so far the board itself has seen it's share of change, with more to come as the year progresses. Board Moderation & Features Ensuring board moderation is consistent and timely across the board was one of the first priorities I tried to address since being appointed Board Admin in January of this year. Since then we've welcomed several new faces to the board team; new moderators, the appointment of a new global moderator and two new super moderators, as well as changes made to the coverage of the mods across the board's various sections. We've amended our verbal warning system slightly too, with further changes to come. It's pleasing to say that there's been a noticeable decrease in forum issues or complaints since these changes. In the coming weeks you can expect to see further changes implemented to our warning and ban system, with the ultimate aim of providing a more enjoyable experience on the
8|Page
board, as well as bringing us a little closer inline with our sister communities. You'll notice some changes to the way rejected Game Suggestions are archived now, hopefully making it easier for both users and staff to see if a suggestion has been previously put forward. In the Help and Questions section we've introduced a system for rating the most useful answers. On top of this we've also introduced a brand new page for applications to join the Team. In the coming year you can expect some further improvements to the layout of some existing sections and, just for fun, you might also notice some new smilies at some point soon. Projects The Newspaper and it's team weren't the only board project to gain some new faces recently. Our Fan Art section has a fresh team of Helpers, with a new leader. Muffin and his team have been working hard to bring fresh activity to the FA section, including the return of the 'Sig of The Week' competition. In the future you can expect more contests to pop up, and as always the FA artist's shop threads have been busy pumping out some wonderful artwork for your board signatures and avatars too, so plenty of reasons to get on down and check it out sometime! You may have also noticed some new guides added to the Guide Section in recent times. In regard to Competitions, we held a successful Easter contest recently, and you can look forward to further contests (of a game-related nature) being held in the near future. Rules A suggestion last year was made by some users requesting a change to the Combat Reports section, to allow Alliances somewhere for their members to collectively post miscellaneous combat reports. As a result the
board team got together and decided on some minor amendments to the CR section rules to allow Alliances a place to do just that. Alliance leadership can now open a thread in the CR section for their members to post any nonconflict related CRs. Recently the Board Team also tabled the most common issues that are found within war and skirmish threads, and decided on some small amendments and additions to the Alliance Conflict rules, hopefully resulting in a more enjoyable war on the boards. Another major change to the Alliance Conflict rules will be
the introduction of a third form of conflict alongside Wars and Skirmishes - Piracy Wars. Overall we hope all these changes, and those to come, will result in a more enjoyable experience on the board in 2013 and thus hopefully more people coming to use it too! Thanks to all our members for being a part of our community during this journey and into the future.

Interview with Maleus
This time we had the pleasure to interview Maleus from server Zeta, the leader of FES alliance - So, first of all thanks for doing this interview with us. Maleus: It's my pleasure - For start, can you please tell us something about yourself? Maleus: My name is Zoran. I'm from Belgrade, Serbia Maleus: I'm 35 years old, working in IT company ATOS as development team lead. - So the creative type? Maleus: I guess. - Cool - When did you first start playing Ikariam? Maleus: I started in 2008 or 2009. Not sure. - So pretty much from when it was launched? Maleus: Yes. First I played out of any alliance, then joined RED (dismissed now) and finally in FES because of great guy there (Hanfam) - Sounds nice - Are you only playing Ikariam on .org servers or on any other comms too? Maleus: I just play on Zeta (org) and test server. - What brought you to Ikariam? Maleus: Friend. He found it accidentally. - Happy accident! Maleus: Yes He loved pictures from it and he likes them. So am I 9|Page
- You have been for a while. Have you taken any breaks? Maleus: No. Maleus: Not more then 2-3 weeks (vacation) - So some 5 years of nonstop playing? That's impressive Maleus: Yes. And intend to play as much as it is alive - Awesome! - How much time a day do you spend playing Ikariam? Maleus: That varries. Average about 2 hours - Do you hang arround the board too, or are you more of ingame-man? Maleus: I'm more "ingame-man". Sometimes I even miss war declarations - I understand that you are a leader of a big alliance. What could you tell us about that? Maleus: Well, FES is alliance based on democracy. We're not aggressive and respect each other and other alliances. Maleus: I think that we became No. 1 alliance because of this. Maleus: Other then that, FES core is made of excellent people that makes this alliance great. I really love FES - When was the alliance founded? Maleus: I don't have that information. I joined after the war between my previous alliance and FES. - Did you win that war or lose? Maleus: We won it (against FES), but we were much larger and aggressive. - In general, as an alliance, are you mostly serious or fun? Maleus: Somewhere in between. More on fun side. It's just a game. I mostly enjoy good company and ingame-friends. - Was the path hard to become top 1 alliance? Maleus: Not to hard, I guess. We lost many members as we're not aggressive and constantly had to go in defensive stance. Maleus: But the core of FES is made of people that are commited to FES and very friendly so it was not that hard - Even though you are not agressive type of alliance, do you still like occasional wars? Maleus: Yes. Wars are full of FUN. Maleus: I like to experiment during the wars Maleus: And to learn from excellent generals on both sides. - What sort of experiments? Maleus: Well, for example in last few wars I played with navy only. Before, I tried something with ground units (unusually mix of units) Maleus: I think it's good that there is a lot of different types of units (both ground and sea) - Well, things have to be interesting. Maleus: Sure. - Do you find it hard to be the leader of a top 1 alliance? 10 | P a g e
Maleus: No. It's not hard. As democratic alliance we don't force on anything. Besides, we have great people in FES so it's really a pleasure. Maleus: And I'm not exaggerating - Well, that sounds nice - Do you have a favourite player? Maybe for their skills or general attitude? Maleus: Yes. Our diplomat: Hanfam. I'm in FES because of him and really like him. He is excellent in diplomacy and respected in other alliances as well. - Well respect is important for a diplomat - What is the funniest thing that has happened to you in ikariam? Maleus: Well, I guess it's comming to FES RED declared on FES and I picked a target ... hanfam. Maleus: Little by little, we became ingame friends and then I switched to FES - To wrap it up - do you have any advice for new players joining Ikariam? Maleus: Well, I helped few of them from time to time. It's relly iimportant to connect to other people (in alliance or not) and shows respect. Maleus: If they do it, they will be very happy with IKA and bound to it for long time - What about tips to become the top 1 alliance? Maleus: Hm ... Respect other players. Respect your members even more. Support your members. And always think of fun. - Thanks for finding time for the interview, I'm sure many find your hints helpful! Maleus: Thanks !
Ikariam is changing: Piracy and Helios tower
During the time our magazine was "off the radar", Gameforge hadn't stopped developing Ikariam. Some things have been changed for the good, others were more controversial. What's the fuss all about? Version 0.5.3 - Piracy Version 0.5.3 was released in December 2012 and featured piracy - an additional game that features capture points, capture runs, raiding and potentially large rewards. The rewards are determined by the position of the participant and his/her total amount of safe capacity at the end of the round. When the version was first released, a cycle used to take four weeks, however, currently they only take tree weeks. The prices have been lowered, but they remain almost equally as high, as Mirarik concluded. Critics say that piracy destabilizes Ikariam and how it should be played, while others tend to see it as a good way to increase their productions. Both sides are equally right: while it gives a nice extra profit to everyone, the rewards remain high and have a significant impact on the economy, with 11 | P a g e
some players are able to double (or more) their regular productions. This makes the competition on younger servers more complicated for those who don't posses a floater. Those who have had a floater for a long time are now rubbing their hands as they are getting some profits out of it now. Some hardcore pirates are even using tree floaters at the same time, because one is obviously too mainstream. Others say that the game features very few strategies: you either play with a floater and rule, or you just bore yourself by clicking all day long and hope for the best results. Some players can get supported by friends which gives them a large advantage. Also defending is not easy, as there will most likely always be someone stronger than you. There still remain methods to defend yourself: the most powerful are making sure you stay out of the sight of a possible pirate, make it as hard as possible to get near your pirate fortresses and let them steal as little as possible. On one last note: the difficulty of piracy strongly depends on your location and the situation on the server itself: some servers are more competitive, while some are more relaxed.
Currently there exist countless (and very interesting) discussions on the subject of piracy. A vote poll, with the voice of 188 voters, gave an impression of what the community thinks of it: 83% of the voters simply wants it removed. It would be unlikely that Gameforge will delete the feature as a whole, as the company used resources (= money) to program it. However, some changes will be necessary to make it more fair to everyone. Many have suggested good ideas, which you can find somewhere else on this board. Version 0.5.4 - Helios Tower Version 0.5.4 introduced the Helios tower. This is a beacon you can buy for one island and, when active, increases the productivity of each player on that island, regardless whether they are paying for it or not. Critics say that it's too expensive and has too little effect. While they might be right, I believe that Gameforge designed this feature to suit some top spenders and to the regular ambrosia user; those who are best benefiting of one of those towers are ambrosia players who place all their cities on one island (= optimal gain), or those who have the same alliance on the same island (= benefit for all members). Some ask why one should pay a handsome lot of money for just 10% extra profits, while you can have + 20% premium boosters at a cheaper price. The answer is simple and complicated at the same time: it's not meant as an alternative for the classic premium boosters, but as an addition to it. Some people are already paying a lot of ambrosia and want that little extra. Just as applies to most of the game: the higher you get in something, the more difficult it will get in the end. Just like it gets more and more expensive to expend your mines or your foresters house, the same applies here. The higher price also protects our non-ambrosia users: the lesser people buy a Helios tower, the lesser it will effect the game.

Did you know, there have been 38 different versions of Ikariam throughout history this includes a whooping total of 234 new features, and 338 (announced) bugfixes!
The miscellaneous corner Ikariascope
T
he month of May will be dominated by two signs of the Zodiac. In the first two weeks of May, the sign of Taurus will have a strong influence and last 2 weeks the sign of Gemini will become stronger.
The sign Taurus is characterised by hard work, safety, cooperation with others, friendship and stability. Planet Venus is ruler of Taurus. This planet takes position in her own sign Taurus during the first 10 days of May, which will make the influence of the Taurus characteristics even stronger.
The planet of war, Mars will take position in the sign Taurus during the whole month of May. So there will not be a lot of fight and war during this period. New wars will not be started often and so taking big risks will not be favourable. So be warned, prolonged skirmishes are likely to lead to outbursts.
For Ikariam, this period is favorable for building, gold savings, treaties, cooperation within allies or for trade. On May 10th, the planet Venus transfers to the sign Gemini, so from that date on the influence of Gemini will become stronger.
Jupiter is another planet that will have a strong influence in May. It takes position in Gemini during May as well. So that will make the influence of Venus stronger.
The sign Gemini is characterised by communication, trade, jokes, curiosity, small changes, short trips and having fun together. The planet Mercury is ruler of Gemini. This planet takes position in the sign Taurus until May 21. Then it will transfer to Gemini together with the Sun.
On May 27 and May 28, the planets Venus, Jupiter and Mercury will align and influence our world in togetherness. Venus brings harmony, friendship and prosperity. Mercury together brings chat, trade, trips and learning. Jupiter, for Gemini, brings expansion especially in religion and science.
So in the first 3 weeks of May, communication and trade will be favorable between old friends and allies. Fir the last week of May, there will be a bigger chance to start trade and communication with new contacts.
In Ikariam, the scores will grow strongly by building, trade, new colonies, science and experiments. It will be a favorable time to expand and use temples, especially at the end of the month.

Signature of the week
T
he Fan Art team has once again started the Signature of the Week (SoTW) contest, to give the artists on our board the possibility to compete against each other. Each week there will be one winning signature that moves on to the next round – "Signature of the Month (SoTM)", with a chance to win the 13 EUR coupon. Also, every Signature of the Week winner will receive a special rank to wear on board. The first SoTW theme was ’Freestyle’ and the theme of the second was ’The Pirates of the Caribbean’, for the third round it was ’Comics’.The winning works were for first the Sig #1 and for the second Sig #4, for the third sig #1. We wish them luck in the SoTM round We also interviewed the Fan Art Leader Muffin, to get some info about SoTW and other upcoming events in the Fan Art section. To the question, why SoTW was brought back again, Muffin replied that it is one of the most familiar and fun contests involving artistic creativity. Users were demanding something fun, something to put them head to head against each other and allow them to show off ones skills We also asked Muffin, if there are a lot of people competing. Muffin answered, that based on the first round there appears to be many, but would still like to see more people joining in. Finally, we asked Muffin about future plans with Fan Art events. Muffin granted us with information about the upcoming events. He said, that they have several new events in mind; huge tournament of artists going against each other for the title of best artist on Ikariam.org and even big battles between artists are amongst these. 15 | P a g e
We thank Muffin for his answers and will be looking forward to those events! Check out what the Fan Art team is up to at the Fan art section of our board, found here http://tinyurl.com/d7txqgk -Written by Hopla
