WELCOME

Welcome to one of the most exciting seasons in our cinema calendar. The Awards Season programme always delivers silver screen delights, both of the big-name variety (‘Ferrari’, ‘One Life’, ‘Priscilla’, ‘Poor Things’), as well as some lesser-known gems (‘Scala!!!’, ‘Society of the Snow’, ‘The Zone of Interest’). It’s also a season where we give you the chance to revisit (or discover) some Bafta and Oscar favourites (‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, ‘Barbie’, ‘Oppenheimer’, ‘Past Lives’) – so do take advantage. For your diary: Baftas - 18 Feb; Oscars 17 Mar. We have a Japanese feast for you which not only features four films from the Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme (which will most likely not be distributed in the UK), but also Wim Wenders’ Tokyo-set film ‘Perfect Days’, plus Hayao Miyazaki’s critically acclaimed (final film?) ‘The Boy and the Heron’, which will have an accompanying talk about his work by Jasper Sharp. To complement the release of the Werner Herzog documentary ‘Radical Dreamer’, we give you his seminal ‘Aguirre, Wrath of God’ plus the inimitable ‘The Enigma of Kasper Hauser’ which has been remastered in 4K. For those who like to dig deeper into film, our Education Team presents four more illustrated talks – focusing on Sofia Coppola, Holocaust Memorial Day, Women’s History Month, as well as the Miyazaki talk mentioned earlier. You may have noticed that Richard Warburton (Operations Manager) is no longer with the cinema. He moved on in November and I wish him all the best in whatever challenges he chooses to pursue. Richard was an invaluable support to me during what were three challenging years for the cinema industry, and he will be greatly missed by all the staff, volunteers and customers. See you at the cinema HEAD OF PROGRAMMING

SOCIETY OF THE SNOW

On a remote Andean glacier in 1972, the survivors of a plane crash attempt to do the impossible and survive until rescue comes. An unbelievable true story. Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which had been chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, crashed in the heart of the Andes. Only 29 of its 45 passengers survived the accident. Trapped in one of the most hostile and inaccessible environments on the planet, they have to resort to extreme measures to stay alive. ‘Society of the Snow’ is a captivating true-life disaster film that exceeds on every technical level and is careful to memorialise the dead in a moving, meaningful way. Bayona’s attention to detail on the realism and setting high up in the Andes makes it absolutely entrancing to watch – the cinematography alone makes it essential big screen viewing. SPAIN 2023 J. A. THE GREAT ESCAPER

Starring Michael Caine and the late Glenda Jackson, a war veteran makes a dash across the channel for the D-Day celebrations. In the summer of 2014 - the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings - octogenarian Bernie Jordan (beautifully played by Caine) made global headlines. He’d staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades. It was a story that captured the imagination of the world - Bernie seemed to embody the defiant, “can-do” spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing. But of course, it wasn’t the whole story. More than an adventure story, this is a love story featuring our hero’s 60-year marriage to Irene, played by the scene-stealing Glenda Jackson in the perfect final role. THE THREE MUSKETEERS: MILADY

LES TROIS MOUSQUETAIRES: MILADY After his beloved Constance is kidnapped, young musketeer D’Artagnan sets out to rescue her, leading to an uneasy alliance with the mysterious Milady de Winter. Meanwhile, a shadowy group of conspirators plan to spark civil war in France. D’Artagnan (François Civil) is forced to join forces with Milady (Eva Green), whom he’d presumed dead, to save Constance (Lyna Khoudri), who was kidnapped before his eyes. But as war is declared and Athos (Vincent Cassel), Porthos (Pio Marmaï) and Aramis (Romain Duris) have already joined the front, a secret from the past shatters old alliances. This has a punchy, Bourne-like style, and never sacrifices any of the wit and panache you would expect from a Musketeers movie. A beautiful film to look at, complete with a selection of extravagant hats to die for. (Subtitles) FRANCE 2023 MARTIN BOURBOULON 115M

The film takes a personal look at Napoleon Bonaparte’s origins, and his swift, ruthless climb to emperor viewed through the prism of his addictive, and often volatile, relationship with his wife and one true love, Josephine. ‘Napoleon’ is a spectacle-filled action epic that details the checkered rise and fall of the iconic French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, played by Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix. Against a stunning backdrop of large-scale filmmaking orchestrated by legendary director Ridley Scott, the film captures Bonaparte’s relentless journey to power through the prism of his addictive, volatile relationship with his one true love, Josephine (Vanessa Kirby), showcasing his visionary military and political tactics against some of the most dynamic practical battle sequences ever filmed. MET OPERA Ancient Babylon comes to life in a classic Met staging of biblical proportions. ‘Nabucco’ is an Italian-language opera (subtitled) in four acts composed in 1841 by Giuseppe Verdi. Baritone George Gagnidze makes his Met role debut as the imperious king Nabucco, alongside Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska reprising her thrilling turn as his vengeful daughter Abigaille. Mezzo-soprano Maria Barakova and tenor SeokJong Baek, in his company debut, are Fenena and Ismaele, and bass Dmitry Belosselskiy repeats his celebrated portrayal of the high priest Zaccaria. Daniele Callegari conducts Verdi’s early masterpiece, which features the ultimate showcase for the great Met Chorus, the moving “Va, Pensiero”. 185M INC INTERVAL

DRIVING MADELEINE

UNE BELLE COURSE When a taxi driver takes a booking to drive a passenger across Paris, he discovers his passenger is 92 years old and travelling to a retirement home where she will spend the rest of her days. Charles (Dany Boon), impatient with his passenger Madeleine’s (Line Renaud) requests to drive through parts of the city significant in her life, is at first distracted and preoccupied with his own problems, but as her story unfolds he discovers her life has been anything but ordinary. Madeleine had lived through one of the darkest wartime periods of human history and survived violent abuse at the hands of her husband Ray Haguenot (Jérémie Laheurte). Yet she is neither bitter nor gloomy, having chosen instead to overcome life’s often unjust vicissitudes, to fight against them, and to embrace joy wherever she may find it. A mutual respect and friendship that neither will forget develops as they share their stories in this heart-warming drama. Carried by two splendid actors who enjoy wonderful natural chemistry. FERRARI

Set in the summer of 1957, with Enzo Ferrari’s auto empire in crisis, the ex-racer turned entrepreneur pushes himself and his drivers to the edge as they launch into the Mille Miglia, a treacherous 1,000mile race across Italy. Behind the spectacle and danger of 1950s Formula 1, Enzo Ferrari (Adam Driver) is in crisis. Bankruptcy stalks the company he and his wife, Laura (Penélope Cruz), built from nothing ten years earlier. Their tempestuous marriage struggles with the mourning for one of their sons Dino, and Enzo struggles with the acknowledgement of another. Look out for the brilliantly orchestrated Mille Miglia race sequence for the film’s climax. Adam Driver is magisterial, playing a man some years older than himself. OPPENHEIMER

If you missed it in the Summer Season, here is your final chance to see one of the films of the year, a quality biopic from one of the premium directors of the 21st century, Christopher Nolan (‘Inception’, Interstellar’ and ‘Dunkirk’). Physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) works with a team of scientists to develop the atomic bomb. He served as the director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during World War II and is often credited as the “father of the atomic bomb” for his role in the Manhattan Project, the research and development undertaking that created the world’s first-ever nuclear weapons. This is a story rife with controversies and drama, which takes on nobody less than the man who ushered in a new level of war, whether he wanted it or not. Jarring and memorable, an ode to creation and consequence. TARRAC!

PULL A woman returns to her home on Ireland’s southwest coast after her father suffers a heart attack. She finds herself returning to the competitive world of rowing in Naomhógs, native Irish boats. Aoife (Kelly Gough) returns home to help her father, Breandán ‘The Bear’ Ó Braoin (Lorcan Cranitch), recover from a heart attack. Day to day they get along just fine, but as we dig a little deeper we find that much has been left unsaid about the loss of Aoife’s mother. The combination of female solidarity of these ‘sisters of the sea’ and a sharp focus on healing family wounds helps this feelgood feature sail over the waves of predictability for a sweet landing on solid home ground. The beautiful backdrop of the Kerry coastline alone makes the film a worthwhile watch. In Irish. (Subtitles) IRELAND 2022 DECLAN RECKS 96M 8 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

MONICA

The intimate portrait of a woman who returns home to care for her dying mother – directed by Andrea Pallaoro who helmed 2017’s ‘Hannah’ with Charlotte Rampling. This is an intimate portrait of a woman who, for the first time in 20 years, returns home to the Midwest to take care of her ailing mother (Patricia Clarkson). It has been a long time since Monica has seen her mother - not since she was kicked out of the house as a teenager because of her mother’s unwillingness to accept her sexuality. But something compels her to make the journey home. Through the themes of abandonment, aging, rejection, acceptance and forgiveness, we get to know Monica (Trace Lysette) and her world made of pain, fear but also courage. This is a quiet, heartfelt and beautifully nuanced drama that feels unique and universal, featuring what will surely go down as one of the best performances of 2023 by Lysette. TCHAIKOVSKY’S WIFE

PERFORMANCE

A visionary evocation of the heartbreak and sickness of a woman in love with a Russian icon who doesn’t love her back. Screened at the 2023 Chichester International Film Festival. The year is 1872, Antonina (Alyona Mikhailova) is a student and admirer, to say the least, of Pyotr Tchaikovsky (Odin Lund Biron). She is desperate to meet the famous composer and at a party has the chance to briefly acquaint herself with him before he leaves. She eventually tracks him down and convinces him to visit her, at which point she confesses her love and proposes that he take her as his wife. There is no denying the ambition or craft of this visually virtuosic film, with Serebrennikov mounting elaborate long takes that sometimes play disorientating games with time and space. ONE LIFE

Will this be the role that elevates Anthony Hopkins to the lofty heights of three-time Oscar winners? Nicholas Winton was a well-to-do stockbroker who, at the start of the Second World War, is so horrified by unfolding events that he heads off to Prague to do something, anything, he can to help the terrified young refugees fleeing Hitler. Everyone thinks he is crazy – including his mother, played by Helena Bonham-Carter. But he somehow manages to organise visa and trains to get hundreds of them to safety in the UK; what has since become known as the Kindertransport. Winton was sometimes called the British Oskar Schindler, and the parallels go beyond their acts of extreme kindness: both men were completely consumed by the task they undertook and never able to focus on the people that they did save, only those that they failed to save. The wonderful Lena Olin plays Nicholas’ wife, Johnny Flynn is great as the younger Winton, but this is unquestionably Hopkins’ film. UK 2023 JAMES HAWES 110M

Sweet and thoughtful, ‘Jules’ deals with serious topics such as aging and loneliness, but does so in a funny and heartwarming way. Jules follows Milton (Ben Kingsley) who lives a quiet life of routine in a small western Pennsylvania town, but finds his day upended when a UFO and its extraterrestrial passenger crash land in his backyard. Before long, Milton develops a close relationship with the extraterrestrial he calls “Jules”. Things become complicated when two neighbours (Harriet Sansom Harris and Jane Curtin) discover Jules and the government quickly closes in. What follows is a funny, wildly inventive ride as the three neighbours find meaning and connection later in life - thanks to this unlikely stranger. PRISCILLA

FILM TALK

When teenage Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley, the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a vulnerable best friend. Through Priscilla’s eyes, Sofia Coppola tells the unseen side of a great American myth in Elvis (Jacob Elordi) and Priscilla’s (Cailee Spaeny) long courtship and turbulent marriage, from a German army base to his dream-world estate at Graceland, in this deeply felt and ravishingly detailed portrait of love, fantasy and fame. This is a magically transportive exercise in style and visual ingenuity in which location, clothing, makeup, hairstyle and music all delicately enhance the fairy-tale romantic journey the main character finds herself going on. Coppola ‘s films have this habit of proclaiming, “there is so much more to this woman than meets the eye”. USA 2023 SOFIA COPPOLA 113M

SUN 28 JAN 12:30 TUE 30 JAN 18:00 JOHN CRAXTON: A MODERN ODYSSEY

NEVER ON SUNDAY

In association with Pallant House Gallery and their exhibition ‘John Craxton: A Modern Odyssey’ (to 21 April 2024) we present a selection of Greek-themed titles over the Winter. Free spirit and prostitute Ilya (Melina Mercouri in an Oscarnominated performance) lives in a Greek port city, making friends often and easily. She encounters Homer Thrace (Jules Dassin), a vacationing American who is obsessed with ancient Greek culture. Homer feels that modern Greece is a shadow of its former self, and he believes that Ilya is a prime example of contemporary decadence. He makes it his goal to amend Ilya’s easy-going ways, but she has stronger principles than Homer expected. Dassin’s classic from the Craxton era was made in the year that Craxton moved to his home on the Venetian harbour at Chania, Crete. Craxton had a musical connection with the film’s composer, Manos Hadjidakis, and soon afterwards secured the help of the star of the film, Melina Mercouri, in his successful campaign to save the harbour from demolition. PAST LIVES

Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends, are separated after Nora’s family emigrates from South Korea. Twenty years later, they are reunited for one fateful week as they confront notions of love and destiny. The film follows two people who might be soulmates, even though they have never kissed and haven’t been in the same city for two decades. Writer-director Celine Song modulates perfectly the delicate tonal balance of this wise, wistful film, dividing her narrative into three distinct segments and following the characters when they’re roughly 12, 24 and 36 years old. There are three superb performances at the picture’s centre, but none is more radiant than that of Greta Lee, gracefully capturing the spirit of a searching soul who seems to understand things about the nuances of love that are beyond the grasp of the rest of us. ‘Past Lives’ is a film about time, missed opportunities and enduring connections, with an outstanding critics’ score of 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place. Unless you have a full-on existential crisis. Or you’re a Ken. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling deliver super impressive performances in the smartest blockbuster of Summer 2023. OR, THE INCREDIBLY STRANGE RISE AND FALL OF THE WORLD’S WILDEST CINEMA AND HOW IT INFLUENCED A MIXED-UP GENERATION OF WEIRDOS AND MISFITS An anarchic, uproarious, and ultimately heart-breaking documentary telling the riotous inside story of London’s legendary Scala cinema. Between 1978 and 1993, the Scala became a Mecca for all manner of oddball cinematic wrongness, attracting a regular, reverent crowd of psychonauts, insomniacs, cruisers, horror hounds, trash aficionados and Laurel and Hardy fans, many of whom have gone on, under its freaky influence, to become authors, artists and filmmakers in their own right. MET OPERA Acclaimed English director Carrie Cracknell brings a vital new production of one of opera’s most enduringly powerful works George Bizet’s ‘Carmen’. It reinvigorates the classic story with a staging that moves the action to the modern day and finds at the heart of the drama issues that could not be more relevant today: gendered violence, abusive labour structures and the desire to break through societal boundaries. Dazzling young mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina leads a powerhouse quartet of stars in the complex and volatile title role, alongside tenor Piotr Beczała as Carmen’s troubled lover Don José, soprano Angel Blue as the loyal Micaëla, and bassbaritone Kyle Ketelsen as the swaggering Escamillo. Daniele Rustioni conducts Bizet’s heart-pounding score. 225M INC 2 INTERVALS 16 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

POOR THINGS

Yorgos Lanthimos has created an incredible tale of the fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter, a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr Godwin Baxter. Under Baxter’s (Willem Dafoe) protection, Bella (Emma Stone in a career-defining performance) is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation. ‘Poor Things’ is an awe-striking visual feast that satisfies the eyes, tantalises the loins, and feeds the soul. Both incredibly funny and disturbing, sometimes in the same beat, it will surely be knocking on the door of awards voters in a host of categories. Lanthimos (‘Dogtooth’, ‘Killing of a Sacred Dear’, The Favourite’) continues to surprise and astound with every film. (Some subtitles) IRELAND/UK 2023 YORGOS LANTHIMOS 141M

THE BOY AND THE HERON

FILM TALK

KIMITACHI WA DÔ IKIRU KA A young boy yearning for his mother ventures into a world shared by the living and the dead. A semi-autobiographical fantasy about life, death and creation, in tribute to friendship, from the mind of Hayao Miyazaki. This is a quintessential Studio Ghibli movie, with a young protagonist (named Mahito) facing off against a fantastical world while coming to terms with their own complex reality. He enters a magical world with a talking grey heron after finding an abandoned tower in his new town. Soulfully exploring thought-provoking themes through a beautifully animated lens, ‘The Boy and the Heron’ is another Miyazaki masterpiece. If this really is his last film (as reported), it is an astonishing farewell – a parable with all the freedom and fantasy of childhood itself. We will be screening both the original Japanese language (subtitled) and the English dubbed versions (including Christian Bale and Willem Dafoe). JAPAN 2023 HAYAO MIYAZAKI 124M

MIYAZAKI’S MOVING PICTURES

As his final film ‘The Boy and the Heron’ is released, this talk (including clips from many of his films) will revisit the career of the legendary Japanese animation director, Hayao Miyazaki. The animated works of Japan’s Hayao Miyazaki bear the rare distinction of being critically praised worldwide and immensely successful commercially, both in his homeland and overseas. His 12 features as a director, which include ‘My Neighbor Totoro’ (1988), ‘Princess Mononoke’ (1997) and the Academy Award-winning ‘Spirited Away’ (2001), combine realistic character design, vivid and expansive landscapes rich in detail, sweeping emotional arcs and a potent whiff of fantasy. In this illustrated talk, critic and Japanese film specialist Jasper Sharp explores a body of work in which teenage girls battle against forces of environmental devastation, children ride in giant cat-buses and pigs can fly. 100M (INC 10 MINS Q&A) 18 | CHICHESTERCINEMA.ORG

Kondo (Koide Keisuke), a penniless young man who returns to his hometown of Ginpei-cho, encounters Sato (Uno Shohei), a movie enthusiast living on the streets. With a little compassion and a lot of understanding, this unexpected pair learn to embrace their differences and create a line of sturdy stilettos unlike any the world has ever seen! But in the end, their most sensational achievement is their friendship. Filmed live at the Adelphi in the heart of London’s West End, with songs from pop icon Cindy Lauper, book by legendary Broadway playwright Harvey Fierstein (‘La Cage Aux Folles’), and direction and choreography by Jerry Mitchell (‘Legally Blonde’, ‘Hairspray’), the musical is based on the film written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth. 135M INC INTERVAL BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650 | 19

A woman who along with her newborn try to find their way home in an environmental crisis that submerges London in flood waters and sees a young family torn apart in the chaos. Bringing a child into a desolate, flooded, famine-ridden land, which happens to be England, is an overwhelming burden for the nameless person Jodie Comer plays in this film. Apocalypse and motherhood befall her simultaneously – and throughout the film, she seeks higher ground, food, shelter, safety and whatever headspace she can snatch. So are most people in the country. This is nourishing, frequently moving, and ends with heroic understatement, where a cruder film would have gone all out for the heartstrings. The ‘Killing Eve’ star finally shakes that off as her defining role, thanks to a heroic performance in Mahalia Belo’s tense, stirring new film. UK 2023 MAHALIA BELO 102M

The heroine’s struggle to escape poverty make ‘Manon’ one of the most dramatic and devastating of ballets, emphasised by Nicholas Georgiadis’ evocative designs that reflect the juxtaposition between Manon’s impoverished origins and the lavish world she longs to inhabit. THE HOLDOVERS

A cranky history teacher at a remote prep school is forced to remain on campus over the holidays with a troubled student who has no place to go. From acclaimed director Alexander Payne (‘Sideways’), we follow the cynical, curmudgeonly classics instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a Massachusetts prep school who is forced to supervise the unfortunate boys unable to return home for the two-week holiday break. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them - a damaged, brainy troublemaker (Dominic Sessa) - and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da’Vine Joy Randolph). The snowy cinematography and nostalgic 1970s production design are outstanding. This is one of Payne’s best films - very funny, occasionally touching and a sterling example of the bonds that can be forged by an unlikely family. Critics are tipping this as the dark horse of the awards season (96% on Rotten Tomatoes). USA 2023 ALEXANDER PAYNE 133M

SHADOW OF FIRE

HOKAGE A beautifully stylish anti-war film that shows how suffering can take away our ability to make lasting connections. Premiered with huge success at the 2023 Venice Film Festival. Just after World War II, Tokyo was completely burnt down and ruined, yet the lives of the people who survived continued. In a hot and humid summer, a war orphan (Oga Tsukao) sneaks into a woman’s (Shuri) shabby house to steal, while a young soldier (Mirai Moriyama) arrives as a guest as she sells her body to make a living. The three begin a strange life together forming a sort of makeshift family, but it is a short-lived experience as the scars of war mean that a stable life is very hard to achieve. Since his sensational theatrical debut with ‘Tetsuo: The Iron Man’ (1989), Tsukamoto Shinya has garnered a devoted fan base worldwide and influenced numerous creators. This is a not a war film but a film that explores human principles and tragedy swayed by fate, which earned the Best Asian Film Award at the Venice Film Festival 2023. WERNER HERZOG: RADICAL DREAMER

Iconic director Werner Herzog reveals extraordinary anecdotes about the filmmaking process. Featuring interviews, archival footage and never-before-seen excerpts. This is an examination of the incredible life and filmmaking career of the German auteur. Herzog interestingly says that he only dreams when he’s been driving for hours at a time, causing him to hallucinate butterflies and other things around him. Radical dreamer is an apt description for the man, the myth, known as Werner Herzog. His distinctive voice and dream-like films have made him a pop culture icon. There is much revealed in this documentary. Did you know that Mick Jagger originally appeared in ‘Fitzcarraldo’ before it had to be reshot? Or that it took 2005’s ‘Grizzly Man’ for Herzog’s popularity to explode. Fans will appreciate the retrospective, while the uninitiated will be taken by the subject’s eccentricity. We are also screening ‘Aguirre, Wrath of God’ and ‘The Enigma of Kasper Hauser’ in February. (Some subtitles) GERMANY 2023 THOMAS VON STEINAECKER 102M

AGUIRRE, WRATH OF GOD

AGUIRRE, DER ZORN GOTTES Shot entirely on location in the wild Amazonian jungle, Herzog’s ambitious film of doomed adventure and stunning, savage beauty remains one of his most extraordinary achievements. Herzog has described it as “a very personal film and still part of my life”. The volatile German star Klaus Kinski, later described by Herzog as “probably the most difficult actor in the world to deal with”, was his inspired and only choice for the role of Don Lope de Aguirre, a power-crazy explorer in 16th century South America who leads a band of conquistadors through the Amazon in search of El Dorado. Beset by the physical and mental challenges of the terrain dangerous rapids, whirlpools, floods, starvation, mutiny, disease and deadly Indian snipers - the men begin to hallucinate and fantasise. They are overpowered by the murderous intent and descent into absolute madness of Aguirre, who declares himself the “wrath of God”. With Klaus Kinski, Cecilia Rivera, Ruy Guerra and Peter Berling. SAMSARA

In the temples of Laos, teenage monks accompany a soul in transit from one body to another through the bardo. A luminous and sonorous journey leads to reincarnation on the beaches of Zanzibar. In Buddhist philosophy, the word ‘samsara’ refers to the nature of life as a cycle of deaths and rebirths. It is this process that Lois Patiño evokes to breathtaking effect in a film with a triptych structure that follows a soul from the body of Mon (Simone Milavanh), an elderly woman in Laos, and later into the form of a baby goat in Zanzibar. Every morning, a Buddhist teenager visits Mon’s home to read her The Bardo Thödol, a guide for the journey between death and the next rebirth. On her last day, the young man whispers the book’s final passages in her ear, closes his eyes, and meditates alongside her, as she embarks on a transformative journey into what lies beyond. This is a voyage that probes spiritual and cinematic boundaries to create a deeply moving meditation on what happens after we die and is, at times, a transcendent experience. KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON

Based on David Grann’s best-selling novel, Martin Scorsese’s new film is set in 1920s Oklahoma and depicts a moment in time in American history known as the Reign of Terror. Oil discovered in the Osage region of the wild west makes them the richest social group per capita in the world, inevitably attracting all sorts of miscreants. William ‘King’ Hale (Robert De Niro), local bigwig and duplicitously vocal ‘friend’ to the Osage, and his feckless nephew Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio) manipulate a situation that sees Ernest into a marriage to Osage woman Molly Kyle (an outstanding Lily Gladstone). After a series of suspicious deaths, FBI agent Tom White (Jesse Plemons) and his undercover team arrive to bring some justice to proceedings. In its gripping, breathless final third – including a witty, touching epilogue – ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ becomes more than a revisionist western, more than a poisonous love story and more even than a classic gangster movie. It becomes a Martin Scorsese film, and there can be no higher praise. USA 2023 MARTIN SCORSESE 206M (PLUS SHORT INTERMISSION) NB. FILM TALK

The commandant of Auschwitz and his wife strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp. Multiple winner at Cannes 2023 including the Grand Prix. The film observes Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel) and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller) as they live their happy family life right next door to the concentration camp. Shot like a casual European dramedy about a family at their summer home, the reality that surrounds them is revealed only by the barbed wire fences, small details in conversation, skies filled with smoke, bursts of sound design, and the piercing score. Friedel as Höss is frightening in his mundanity and Hüller as Hedwig gives the film its twisted humanity. The moments where Hedwig is cruel to her house staff almost feel like a relief - evil we can see even if it’s so much milder than what’s over the walls. In the novel from where this screenplay has been adapted, the lead was named Paul Doll. Glazer, best known for ‘Sexy Beast’ and ‘Under the Skin’, specifically chose to name his main character Rudolf Höss (almost identical to Rudolf Hess) to bring the weight of a wellrecorded historical character living in a specific place and time. ZONES OF INTEREST: JONATHAN GLAZER AND MARTIN AMIS

With the UK release of Cannes award winner ‘The Zone of Interest’, this talk, illustrated by a range of clips, will explore the careers of film director Jonathan Glazer and writer Martin Amis, including the ways in which each of them has tackled one of the greatest crimes in human history. Jonathan Glazer’s film of Martin Amis’ novel ‘The Zone of Interest’ unites two formidable talents. Glazer forged a reputation as a director of iconic TV commercials before his feature debut ‘Sexy Beast’ in 2000. Amis’ trademark was a pyrotechnic prose style that he perfected in satirical comedies like ‘Money’ (1984). Nick JohnstonJones of the Cinema Education Team traces the careers of both men, from shared apprenticeships in advertising to the mature landmarks of their later work, and how their unique storytelling visions converged in this project. It also considers Glazer’s film in the context of the expanding genre of Holocaust fiction and filmmaking. 100M (INC 10 MINS Q&A) BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650 | 25

A screenwriter drawn back to his childhood home enters into a fledgling relationship with a mysterious neighbour. Adapted by Andrew Haigh from a Japanese story, this unusual romance is aching, gorgeously shot and shimmering with sadness. One night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London, Adam (Andrew Scott) has a chance encounter with a mysterious neighbour Harry (Paul Mescal), which punctures the rhythm of his everyday life. As a relationship develops between them, Adam is preoccupied with memories of the past and finds himself drawn back to the suburban town where he grew up, and the childhood home where his parents (Claire Foy and Jamie Bell) appear to be living, just as they were on the day they died, 30 years before. Haigh, cinematographer Jamie D. Ramsay (‘Living’) and editor Jonathan Alberts utilise a lot of brilliant techniques to keep Adam slipping between worlds, to never fully resolve whether he is dreaming, is seeing ghosts, or is already one himself. A deeply moving film about loss and loneliness with a quartet of performances that blend together in a breathtaking way. UK 2023 ANDREW HAIGH 105M

ANATOMY OF A FALL

ANATOMIE D’UNE CHUTE Palme d’Or Winner at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. “A sparkling intellectual thriller that lingers for days.” - The Telegraph When a frustrated writer (Samuel Theis) dies of suspicious causes, the clues he left behind would appear to implicate his wife (Sandra Hüller who came to attention in ‘Toni Erdmann’). If the death in the French Alps was a suicide, then what follows is incredibly cruel, as his grieving wife is hauled into court and tried for his murder. Their 11-year-old son (Milo Machado Graner) who is blind, is obsessed with trying to make sense of what happened, whereas it is the death of the marriage, not the husband, that preoccupies Palme d’Or-winning director Justine Triet. She posits the disturbing question: Can any couple’s relationship withstand the kind of scrutiny that this one is subjected to, as old fights and infidelities are dragged into the open? Unfolding in both French and English, Triet has intrigued Festival audiences by turning what could have been a hackneyed courtroom drama upside down with an approach that is rigorous and almost documentary-like in its forensic examination. LA PASSION DE DODIN BOUFFANT This mouthwatering and sensual exercise in haute cuisine and late-flowering romance is set in 1885 and almost totally within the confines of a rustic kitchen in a chateau. Back on national release after its preview at Chichester’s French Film Festival UK. Peerless cook Eugénie (Juliette Binoche) has worked for the famous gourmet Dodin (Benoît Magimel) for the last 20 years. As time went by, the practice of gastronomy and mutual admiration turned into a romantic relationship. He realises, however, that while he schmoozes the rich and famous in the dining room, she remains in the kitchen but is clearly hugely responsible for his august reputation. There is talk of marriage, but Eugénie values her independence too much in a relationship that she considers should be of equal parts. WICKED LITTLE LETTERS

When people in Littlehampton - including conservative local Edith - begin to receive letters full of hilarious profanities, rowdy Irish migrant Rose is charged with the crime. Suspecting that something is amiss, the town’s women investigate. Fiery Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley) has little in common with the pious Edith Swan (Olivia Colman) aside from them being neighbours in the seaside town of Littlehampton in the 1920’s. But one day, Edith starts receiving scandalous letters written with foul language as eccentric as it is obscene, and she immediately accuses Rose of being the poison pen writer behind them. As Rose stands to lose her freedom and the custody of her daughter, and outrageous letters continue to blight the town, police officer Gladys Moss (Anjana Vasan) begins to suspect something is amiss. Together with a group of resourceful women, Gladys endeavours to solve the mystery, liberate Rose, and catch the real culprit. Inspired by a real historical event from the 1920s, the charming seaside town of Littlehampton was a place where everyone knows everyone, and everyone is always on their best Christian behaviour. Filming for this thoroughly enjoyable and very funny film took place principally in Arundel throughout the Autumn of 2022. No doubt we will delight in recognising our local surrounds on the big screen. UK 2023 THEA SHARROCK 102M FOCUS ON DOCUMENTARY

SPECIAL PRESENTATION

OCCUPIED CITY

Where do the memories of a city go? From Oscar and BAFTAwinning filmmaker and Turner Prize-winning visual artist Steve McQueen comes this mesmerising and monumental excavation of how the past haunts our precarious present: mirroring it and warning us in plain sight. In ‘Occupied City’, a searching camera sweeps through a vibrant contemporary Amsterdam while, at the same time, the film summons people and memories of the past under Nazi occupation within the city’s map and woven into the fabric of its streets and buildings. McQueen opens up a poetic, dreamlike space where unthinkable history and hope for a new future co-exist. UK/NETHERLANDS 2023 STEVE MCQUEEN 266M INC INTERVAL BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650 | 31

AMERICAN FICTION

A novelist who is fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment uses a pen name to write a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain. At once broadly comedic and bitingly barbed, ‘American Fiction’ is the story of Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (an outstanding Jeffrey Wright), a writer and malcontent who unwillingly finds himself back in his East Coast hometown. There he is confronted with the family turmoil he tries to avoid, heightened by growing irritation with the expectations he feels from the literary establishment about what “Black literature” ought to be. This is an extremely funny movie that lands some sharp blows, and a stellar feature debut from seasoned TV writer Cord Jefferson, where he confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. PERFECT DAYS

A janitor in Japan drives between jobs listening to rock music in this absorbing slice-of-life drama which adds a quietly soaring gem to director Wim Wenders’ estimable filmography. Hirayama (Kôji Yakusho) seems utterly content with his simple life as a cleaner of toilets in Tokyo. Outside of his very structured everyday routine he enjoys his passion for music and for books. A series of unexpected encounters gradually reveal more of his past. This is a movie about art, exploring how in the midst of chaos, it’s not labour but the physical objects of beauty that we weave into our lives paperback novels, cassette tapes of favourite albums, carefully tended bonsai plants, a perfectly framed photograph - that structure and give our days meaning. A deeply moving reflection on finding beauty in the everyday world around us. A poem of extraordinary subtlety and beauty led by a remarkable performance by Yakusho. Not to be missed. THE ENIGMA OF KASPER HAUSER

JEDER FÜR SICH UND GOTT GEGEN ALLE A young man named Kaspar Hauser suddenly appears in Nuremberg in 1828, barely able to talk or walk, and bearing a strange note. When young German man Kaspar Hauser (a remarkable performance from Bruno S.) is suddenly released from an existence of inexplicable confinement, he is forced into regular society. Barely capable of communicating, Hauser is exploited in a circus sideshow until he is taken under the wing of the kind-hearted Professor Daumer (Walter Ladengast), who slowly helps him acclimatise to conventional life, even teaching him to read and write. Despite his best efforts, however, Hauser may not be able to escape the horrors of his past. Based on the true story of a 16-year-old youth who appeared out of nowhere in a German square in 1828, this is one of Herzog’s most remarkable films, and now with a 4K remaster, it is a must-see on the big screen. Look out also for ‘Werner Herzog: Radical Dreamer’ and ‘Aguirre, Wrath of God’ also screening in February. WEST GERMANY 1974 WERNER HERZOG 110M

THE PROMISED LAND

PERFORMANCE

BASTARDEN The amazing story of Ludvig Kahlen who pursued his lifelong dream: to make the Danish heath bring him wealth and honour. In 1755, the impoverished Captain Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen) sets out to conquer the harsh, uninhabitable Danish heaths of Jutland with a seemingly impossible goal; to build a colony in the name of the king. In exchange, he will receive a desperately desired Royal name for himself. But the sole ruler of the area, the merciless Frederik de Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg), arrogantly believes this land belongs to him. When de Schinkel learns that the maid Ann Barbara (Amanda Collin) and her husband have escaped for refuge with Kahlen, the privileged and spiteful ruler swears revenge, doing everything in his power to drive the captain away. Kahlen will not be intimated and takes up the unequal battle - not only risking his life, but also the family of outsiders that has formed around him. Shot with the sweep of a historical epic, featuring another superb example of Mads Mikkelsen’s stone-faced magnetism, plus a gallery of settlers, nobles and civil servants who could have stepped out of a Dutch Masters painting. BOB MARLEY: ONE LOVE

Celebrates the life and music of legendary reggae musician Bob Marley, an icon who inspired generations through his message of love and unity. Being a trailblazer, Marley (Kingsley Ben-Adir) was involved in the development of reggae as a musical genre. Jamaican culture became more popular because of his music, which was not just about sounds, but a way of life. Marley preached peace, harmony and respect and was not afraid to use his music as a platform for his opinions on politics or religion. He has maintained such popularity over the years that you can find his poster hanging in modernday student rooms, even though he hasn’t produced any music since 1980. That is how much of an influence this man has had on music and pop culture. That being the case, the lead actor had to be perfect. Kingsley Ben-Adir was cast as Bob, after an extensive, year-long and globe-spanning search by the studio. USA 2024 REINALDO MARCUS GREEN TIME TBC

EUREKA

A story in three places and times finding parallels between the experience of indigenous communities in the Old West; South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation in the present day; and finally in the jungles of early-70s Brazil. Grizzled gunslinger Murphy (Viggo Mortensen) has come to a desolate place in America’s West on a mission to rescue his kidnapped daughter, Molly (Viilbjørk Malling Agger). The film pivots to a house on the Pine Ridge Reservation, home to the Oglala Sioux people where we meet Alaina (Alaina Clifford), a policewoman handling a series of incidents, and her niece Sadie (Sadie Lapointe), a basketball coach looking to flee her increasingly depopulated turf. We finally end up in a remote corner of the Amazon where a small indigenous tribe wrestles with a gold rush threatening to upend their lives. Alonso’s latest is his most ambitious film, siding not with the white strangers in strange lands that had long featured in Alonso’s oeuvre, but with the native communities facing these invaders. ARGYLLE

An introverted spy novelist is drawn into the activities of a sinister underground syndicate in this hugely entertaining film by Matthew Vaughn (‘Kingsman’). Bryce Dallas Howard is Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her computer and her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books - which centre on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate - begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organisation, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Accompanied by Aiden (Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between Elly’s fictional world and her real one begins to blur. The great cast features Samuel L. Jackson, Dua Lipa, Bryan Cranston and Henry Cavill as Argylle. USA 2024 MATTHEW VAUGHN 135M

PAINTING THE MODERN GARDEN: MONET TO MATISSE

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN Using the work of Monet as a starting point, this landmark exhibition examines the role gardens played in the evolution of art from the early 1860s through to the 1920s. Trace the emergence of the modern garden in its many forms and glories as we take you through a period of great social change and innovation in the arts. Discover the paintings of some of the most important Impressionist, Post-Impressionist and Avant-Garde artists of the early 20th century as they explore this theme. Monet, arguably the most important painter of gardens in the history of art, once said he owed his painting “to flowers”. But Monet was far from alone in his fascination with the horticultural world, which is why we will also be bringing you masterpieces by Renoir, Cezanne, Pissarro, Manet, Sargent, Kandinsky, Van Gogh, Matisse, Klimt and Klee. UNSUNG HEROINES OR DOMESTIC DRUDGES?

HOUSEWIVES AND THE HOMEFRONT IN SECOND WORLD WAR FILMS To mark Women’s History Month this talk will look at the ways in which the women left at home during World War II were portrayed in the films of the time. The Second World War was fought not only on the battlefront but in fields, factories and homes. Women who entered the workforce as munitions workers, land girls and members of the women’s armed forces were celebrated in films like ‘The Gentle Sex’ (1943) and ‘Millions Like Us’ (1943). In this talk, featuring a range of clips, cultural historian and author Maggie Andrews will however focus on how the majority of women who were housewives struggling with rationing, evacuees and keeping the home fires burning were portrayed in film. ‘Mrs Miniver’ will be screened to complement this talk on Sunday 17 March. 100M (INC 10 MINS Q&A)

MRS. MINIVER

To complement our ‘Housewives on the Homefront’ talk (see above) in Women’s History Month, we present this classic moving drama about a middle-class English family learning to cope with war, told in a series of dramatic vignettes. The family, headed by the lovely and gracious matriarch Kay Miniver (Greer Garson), endures the departure of the father Clem (Walter Pidgeon) for the beaches at Dunkirk; the discovery of a wounded Nazi pilot; the death of the daughter-in-law in an air raid; and the entry of the son into the Royal Air Force. Shot in the middle of World War II about a family surviving the beginning of that war, this terrific film was the winner of six Oscars, including Best Picture, Director (William Wyler), Actress (Garson), Supporting Actress (Teresa Wright), Screenplay and Cinematography.
