Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) learns about her mother Donna’s (Meryl Streep) past, in this sequel to ‘Mamma Mia!’. As the film goes back and forth in time through Donna’s life, experiencing the fun she had with Sophie’s three possible dads, it shows how relationships forged in the past resonate in the present. Sophie is now pregnant, so like Donna, she will be young when she has her baby. This is where she realizes she will need to take risks, just as her mother did. USA 2018 Ol Parker.

From writer-director Paul Schrader (‘Taxi Driver’, ‘American Gigolo’) comes a gripping thriller about a crisis of faith that is at once personal, political and planetary. Reverend Ernst Toller (Ethan Hawke) is a solitary, middle-aged parish pastor at a small Dutch Reform church in upstate New York on the cusp of celebrating its 250th anniversary. Once a stop on the Underground Railroad, the church is now a tourist attraction catering to a dwindling congregation, eclipsed by its nearby parent church, Abundant Life, with its state-of-the-art facilities and 5,000-strong flock. When a pregnant parishioner (Amanda Seyfried) asks Reverend Toller to counsel her husband, a radical environmentalist, the clergyman finds himself plunged into his own tormented past, and equally despairing future, until he finds redemption in the final act. Beautifully shot in an unusual aspect ratio, this is a film that will not be quickly forgotten. USA 2017 Paul Schrader 113m. Subtitled screening

One summer at a lakeside Russian estate, friends and family gather for a weekend in the countryside. While everyone is caught up in passionately loving someone who loves somebody else, a tragicomedy unfolds about art, fame, human folly, and the eternal desire to live a purposeful life. Adapted by Tony-winning playwright Stephen Karam from Anton Chekhov’s classic play, ‘The Seagull’ explores with comedy and melancholy, the obsessive nature of love, the tangled relationships between parents and children, and the transcendent value and psychic toll of art. Utilizing natural light, Matthew J. Lloyd’s cinematography is stunning, highlighting the detailed production design and authentic period costumes. Saoirse Ronan’s tender, wrenching performance as the lovelorn Nina, and, especially, Annette Bening’s fantastic turn as Irina, the grand dame of the Russian theatre whose most tumultuous work occurs offstage, are both outstanding. Also stars Elisabeth Moss and Brian Dennehy. UK 2018 Michael Mayer 98m.

The Apparition

L’Apparition The Vatican recruits journalist Jacques (Vincent Lindon) to investigate the veracity of a saintly apparition in a small French village – a true canonical investigation. Upon his arrival, he meets the young and sensitive Anna who claims to have personally witnessed the apparition of the Virgin Mary. A profound devout, she’s garnered an impressive following in the village and is torn between her faith and the many solicitations she receives. Confronted with opposing views from clergy members and skeptics in the group, Jacques gradually uncovers the hidden motivations and pressures at work and sees his beliefs system profoundly shaken. Giannoli’s film moves slowly but with considerable power as it explores faith, doubt, mass hysteria and the desperate human need for supernatural reassurance. Sicilian Ghost Story

Booking Ref

Against a heavy cloak of secrecy, a 12-year-old girl smitten with her handsome classmate ventures deeper and deeper into the enchanted Sicilian forests to find him, unaware of just how thick the mystery behind his strange disappearance really is. This Italian drama is based on the harrowing true story of a 13-yearold boy kidnapped by Mafia figures in the 1990s and held captive for two years to prevent his father, another mafioso, from testifying against them in court. The criminal aspect of the story is played down, with the focus instead on the curious, almost supernatural connection between the teen and his girlfriend. Careful camera movement, distorting wide-angle lenses, and a hyper-focused sound design all contribute to the mysterious atmosphere. With shades of ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, co-directors Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza beautifully mix fairy tale and mythological tropes with the harsh reality of a Mafia kidnapping. (Subtitles) Italy 2017 Fabio Grassadonia & Antonio Piazza 122m.

Teatro alla Scala A final opportunity to see the wonderful La Scala ballet, ‘Le Corsaire’, loosely based on the poem ‘The Corsair’ by Lord Byron, to the music of Adolphe Adam. Captured live from Teatro alla Scala, Milan 16 May 2018. ‘Le Corsaire’ follows the swashbuckling adventures of a dashing pirate who journeys across the high seas to save his beloved from the Pasha’s harem with danger looming at every turn. With lavish sets and costumes, the choreography mirrors Russian ballet master Maris Petipa’s revival from 19th century St. Petersburg. Full of action, passion and a romantic twist form the heart of this unmissable ballet. Following our sell-out live production from the Bolshoi last October, it will be fascinating to see how La Scala’s new production compares. Conductor – Patrick Fournillier; Choreographer – Anna-Marie Holmes. 139m approx. inc interval.

The More You Ignore Me

Booking Ref

Based on Jo Brand’s critically acclaimed novel of the same name, this is a warm, comedy drama focusing on the life of an unconventional family in 1980s rural England. The film focuses on Gina, a young mother, whose efforts to be a loving mother and wife are undermined by her declining mental health. Over the years, as she grows up, her daughter Alice struggles to relate to her heavily medicated mum and causes chaos when she comes up with a plan to reconnect with her. Set to the songs of The Smiths, ‘The More You Ignore Me’ provides a sometimes stark, yet comical insight into life within this quirky household, whilst addressing mental health issues and their impact on the family. The cast includes Sheridan Smith, Sally Phillips, Sheila Hancock and Michelle Collins. UK 2018 Keith English 105m.

Tara (Gemma Arterton), a housewife in suburban London, is living a life that is no longer hers: it belongs to her overworked, selfabsorbed husband (Dominic Cooper); her young son and daughter; and the numbing routine of housework and childcare. In desperate need of a change, Tara one day makes a bold decision. Armed with a one-way ticket to Paris, she leaves everything behind to rediscover herself in a new city – but walking out on your life isn’t so simple. The King

Forty years after the death of Elvis Presley, Eugene Jarecki’s new film takes the King’s 1963 Rolls-Royce on a musical road trip across America. From Memphis to New York, Las Vegas, and beyond, the journey traces the rise and fall of Elvis as a metaphor for the country he left behind. The election of Donald Trump as U.S. president could not provide a better example of what’s gone so terribly wrong south of the border, that a country once so full of promise decades ago in dealing with racial and economic inequality has simply failed to heed the lessons of history. In this ground-breaking film, Jarecki (two-time Sundance Grand Jury winner) paints a visionary portrait of the state of the American Dream. A diverse cast of Americans, both famous and not, join the journey. USA 2018 Eugene Jarecki 107m.

Cold War

Zimna Wojna A tumultuous love story between two very different people, who despite their overwhelming passion for each other, are fatefully mismatched. Winner of Best Director at Cannes in May and has received ecstatic reviews. Pawel Pawlikowski, director of the Oscar-winning ‘Ida’, returns with a story set against the oppressive background of the Cold War; following singer Zula (Joanna Kulig) and pianist Wiktor (Tomasz Kot) over the course of 15 years. Endlessly drawn to each other, they are unable to co-exist, but their inability to move on from one another is stuck on a painful loop. The film’s very structure serves to compound and solidify their unbreakable bond as Zula rises to fame, as they perform across Eastern Europe (the film includes some brilliantly choreographed musical set-pieces) and realise that they must find a way to slip past the Iron Curtain, and soon. While he fights for custody of his four-year-old daughter, he is gradually sucked into a dispute between his parents and their neighbours over an old and beautiful tree. Lenny Abrahamson, who brought us the brilliantly chilling ‘Room’ in 2015, is back with a thrilling drama about a doctor who must investigate the paranormal activity taking place at an English stately home. This is the story of Dr Faraday (Domhnall Gleeson), the son of a housemaid, who has built a life of quiet respectability as a country doctor. During the long hot summer of 1948, he is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall, where his mother once worked. The Hall has been home to the Ayres family for more than two centuries. But it is now in decline and its inhabitants – mother, son and daughter – are haunted by something more ominous than a dying way of life. The Guardians

Les Gardiennes A superbly involving French rural drama from Xavier Beauvois, with Nathalie Baye magnificent as a matriarch struggling to run the land when war breaks out. Beauvois (‘Of Gods and Men’) reveals the heroic struggles of women on the rural home front in First World War France, in a gripping, terrifically acted ensemble drama. The ‘Gardiennes’ of the title are the women who roll up their sleeves to take charge of the land when war breaks out. Nathalie Baye, in the role of a lifetime, is utterly commanding as Hortense, the matriarch who will do anything to ensure that family and farm survive, as the men of the family make intermittent returns from the front, and the arrival of American troops brings its own unrest. Caroline Champetier’s magnificent landscape photography brings an elemental touch to the realism that gives this film the intensity of a French-style Thomas Hardy. The Nun

La Religieuse One of the most breath-taking and emotional works of French cinema, Jacques Rivette’s exquisite 1966 drama ‘The Nun’ appears now in a glorious new 4K digital restoration. Suzanne (Anna Karina) is an intelligent, freedom-loving woman who is forced into a convent against her will. The fact that she was sired by a man who is not her mother’s husband – and that a suitable dowry cannot be paid for her – brings her to the church. Suzanne endures continual harassment from one Mother Superior (Micheline Presle), and when transferred to a different convent, she becomes subject to romantic leanings from another Mother Superior (Liselotte Pulver), who flees with a priest (Francisco Rabal). A casual, keenly observed story of a Brooklyn father and daughter charged with a kind of music as free-spirited as the duo is. Aging Brooklyn hipster Frank (Nick Offerman) is in danger of losing his failing Brooklyn record shop; his teenage daughter Sam (Kiersey Clemons) is preparing to move to California to study medicine. Frank’s boyish response to stress is to conscript Sam for one of their “jam seshes,” a father-daughter bonding ritual that he loves but that she’s grown out of. When one of their jam session songs becomes an online hit, they adopt Sam’s protest-filled words “‘We Are Not A Band, dad” as the name of their ensemble, before they eventually exchange farewells with acceptance. ‘Hearts Beat Loud’ gently charts the last days of this parent-daughter’s togetherness pre-college, as both of them learn to let life take its course. Wim Wenders’ new documentary is intended to be a personal journey with Pope Francis, rather than a biographical documentary about him. The pope’s ideas and his message are central to this documentary, which sets out to present his work of reform and his answers to today’s global questions. From his deep concern for the poor and wealth inequality, to his involvement in environmental issues and social justice, Pope Francis engages the audience face-to-face and calls for peace. Wenders, who once wanted to be a priest but went onto make some directly religious films instead, doesn’t seek converts with this documentary, so much as to put His Holiness’ wisdom out into the world. A faithful Jehovah’s Witness is forced to shun her own sister because of a religious transgression. As the separation draws out, she starts to question the meaning of God’s love. Apostasy – an act of refusing to continue to follow, obey, or recognize a religious faith. Blood proves thicker than (holy) water in one of the year’s strongest British films. A beautifully balanced glimpse into the world of Jehovah’s Witnesses set in a humdrum corner of Manchester. The focus of Kokotajlo’s ingeniously structured script shifts fluidly between a mother (Ivana) and her two adult daughters (Chloe and Luisa), examining how deeply ingrained religious beliefs can be sorely tested by circumstances. While undeniably critical in tone and ultimately sympathetic with Luisa’s increasingly spiky rebelliousness, ‘Apostasy’ takes appropriate care to show balanced respect for Jehovah’s Witness beliefs, It’s a timely, sensitive and intelligent work of cinema. Mayerling

ROH Ballet ‘Mayerling’ is a classic of the Royal Ballet repertory, with its emotional depth, haunting imagery, and one of the most demanding roles ever created for a male dancer. With music by Franz Liszt. Kenneth MacMillan choreographed a complex work around the psychologically tormented heir to the Habsburg Empire, Crown Prince Rudolf. From the ballet’s start, the glamour of the Austro-Hungarian court is contrasted with undercurrents of sexual and political intrigue that drive the story to its violent climax in a double suicide. The large cast allows for impressive ensembles in addition to the ballet’s many solos of distinctive character and pas de deux of disturbing eroticism. This ballet, bursting with intensity, madness and passion, proves that sometimes the truth is more scandalous than fiction. 195m including 2 intervals.

Anchor and Hope

Tierra Firma Two women, Eva and Kat, and the best friend of one of them, Roger. A boat in the canals of London and a question: Is it possible to live love, family, and life in such different ways and yet remain united? Eva (Oona Chaplin) and Kat (Natalia Tena) have been together for years, the recent death of their cat relives an old debate between them: Eva’s desire to have children… but Kat is not keen. Things change when Kat’s best friend, Roger (David Verdaguer), spends a few days in the boat where they live and, after a night of drinking, she ends up reluctantly accepting that Roger will provide the necessary donation to complete the pregnancy. ‘Tierra Firma’ makes it clear that ideal situations in life are very hard to find. Placing expectations on others is a disappointing exercise because so often, the other person is not capable of fulfilling them. (Some Subtitles) Spain 2017 Carlos Marques-Marcet 113m.

Birth and death are extraordinary experiences. Life is a fleeting pleasure. Gaspar Noé is back, and with his customary confrontational form of cinema. Noé introduces his massive cast of characters – played by a diverse spectrum of first-time or nonprofessional actors, plus Sofia Boutella – through a montage of polite, lightly revealing talking-head interviews. They end up convening at a rehearsal space and dormitory to practise their routine for an upcoming competition, before kicking off a night of partying… then someone spikes the Sangria. In the hedonistic, mass-hysteric implosion of the film’s surrogate family – a wide cross section of ethnicities and sexual orientations – one can see the portrait of a multicultural Europe tearing itself apart from the inside. This never less than electrifying film, was hysterically cheered at Cannes this year. Not for the faint hearted! France 2018 Gaspar Noé 95m.

Agnes, taken for granted as a suburban mother, discovers a passion for solving jigsaw puzzles which unexpectedly draws her into a new world – where her life unfolds in ways she could never have imagined. Under-appreciated mum Agnes’ (Kelly Macdonald) life revolves around her husband Louie (David Denman) and her two sons Ziggy (Bubba Weiler) and Gabe (Austin Abrams). When Agnes receives a jigsaw for her birthday it opens a surprising new avenue in her life that leads her to meet Robert (Irrfan Khan), an avid competitive puzzler who triggers a reassessment of her situation. Yayoi Kusama is one the most successful living contemporary artists in the world, and the most successful living female artist. And it only took her 88 years to get here. This documentary explores artist Kusama’s journey from a conservative upbringing in Japan to her brush with fame in America during the 1960s (where she rivaled Andy Warhol for press attention) and concludes with the international fame she has finally achieved within the art world. Now in her 80s, Kusama has spent the last 30 years living in a mental institution in Japan. That her life would have been different had she been born male, is one of the inescapable conclusions that the documentary ‘Kusama: Infinity’ leaves you with. The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales…

Booking Ref

Le Grand Méchant Renard et Autres Contes... A hilarious, heartwarming tale of animal misfits destined to become a classic. The countryside isn’t always as calm and peaceful as it’s made out to be, and the animals on this farm are particularly agitated: a fox who mothers a family of chicks, a rabbit who plays the stork, and a duck who wants to be Santa Claus. If you think life in the country is a walk in the park, think again! This is a delirious, delightful triptych of interlocking stories, with a pacing and visual spontaneity that harkens back to classic Looney Tunes shorts and slapstick tworeelers. But underneath the gags (and there are plenty of them), the three stories offer a sensitive and beautiful portrayal of family, and the anxieties of modern life. Visages, Villages Director Agnès Varda and photographer/muralist J.R. journey through rural France and form an unlikely friendship. Agnès Varda and JR have things in common: a passion for and the exploration of images in general, and more precisely, for places and for ways of showing, sharing, and exhibiting them. Agnès chose cinema. JR chose to create open air photography galleries. When Agnès and JR met in 2015, they immediately wanted to work together, to shoot a film in France, far from cities, during a trip in JR’s photographic (and magical) truck. Through chance encounters and prepared projects, they reached out to others, listening to them, photographing them, and sometimes putting them on posters. The Producers

50th Anniversary We celebrate the 50th anniversary of ‘The Producers’ by bringing this classic (here remastered) Mel Brooks film to Chichester. Once the ‘King of The Great White Way’, Max Bialystock (Zero Mostel) is reduced to romancing old ladies to finance his next flop show. But when nervous accountant Leopold Bloom (Gene Wilder) surmises that more money could be made from a flop than a hit, as they would be entitled to keep the investors’ excess money. The next step is to produce the Busby Berkeleyesque musical, ‘Springtime for Hitler’. They select the worst play, the worst playwright, the worst director, and the worst actor (Dick Shawn) to collaborate on the guaranteed flop. Or is it? This was Brooks’ first feature, an absolutely hilarious and tasteless New York Jewish comedy about Broadway. USA 1967 Mel Brooks 88m.

Beethoven’s 9th Symphony in Concert

Vienna Philharmonic Orhestra Beethoven’s 9th Symphony performed by the Vienna Philharmoniker, conducted by Christian Thielemann, one of the most recognized conductors of our time. With Annette Dasch, Mihoko Fujimura, Piotr Beczala and George Zeppenfeld. There is perhaps no other musical ensemble more consistently associated with the tradition of European classical music than the Vienna Philharmonic. During its 160-year history, its musicians have been an integral part of a musical epoch which, due to an abundance of uniquely gifted composers and interpreters, is widely regarded as unique. Richard Wagner described the orchestra as being one of the most outstanding in the world; Gustav Mahler claimed to be joined together through “the bonds of musical art”; and Richard Strauss summarized these sentiments by saying: “All praise of the Vienna Philharmonic reveals itself as understatement.” Recorded in 2010 Running time 80mins no interval.

Yardie

Idris Elba steps behind the camera for the first time with this adaptation of Victor Headley’s popular novel of the same name, tapping in to a community, and culture, seldom explored on the silver screen. This is the story of a Jamaican hoodlum Dennis Campbell (Aml Ameen), affectionately known as ‘D’, who is sent to London for his own safety, and jumps from the frying pan into the fire, as he ends up being embroiled in the London drug scene. In his feature debut, Elba shows some promise that he’ll be as good behind the camera as he is in front of it. The strongest section of ‘Yardie’ is that set in Kingston, Jamaica, where we experience the messy world of D though the strong, vibrant colour palette of DoP John Conroy’s cinematography and the hustle and bustle of an excellent, reggae-inspired soundtrack. Edith Tudor-Hart, a courageous woman with a mission. A film about a spy, a photographer and the discovery of a family secret. Born Edith Suschitzky in 1908, in Vienna, the Jewish great aunt of director Peter Stephan Jungk was a communist, a Montessori kindergarten teacher, a Bauhaus student and a successful spy for the KGB. She arranged contact with the famous British double agent Kim Philby and helped establish the Cambridge Five, the Soviet Union’s most successful Spy ring. At the same time, Edith Tudor-Hart was a photographer who portrayed the misery of the 1930s in Vienna and London, making her one of the most important protagonists of British social photography of the 1930s. Jungk attempts to unravel the riddles of her life, of which even people close to her knew nothing. He speaks to military historians, photo archivists, ex-KGB agents and family members, portraying historical moments in short animated sequences, and above all, he wonders how Edith could remain a convinced Communist in spite of the known atrocities of the Stalinist regime. Architecture has never been more romantic than in this film, rarely will images of mighty concrete set against tranquil waters resonate so powerfully as those on display here. When a renowned architecture scholar falls suddenly ill during a speaking tour, his son Jin (John Cho) finds himself stranded in Columbus, Indiana – a small Midwestern city celebrated for its many significant modernist buildings. Jin strikes up a friendship with Casey (Haley Lu Richardson), a young architecture enthusiast who works at the local library. As their intimacy develops, Jin and Casey explore both the town and their conflicted emotions: Jin’s estranged relationship with his father, and Casey’s reluctance to leave Columbus and her mother. With its naturalistic rhythms and empathy for the complexities of families, this is a gently drifting, deeply absorbing conversation of a film. It is also a showcase for its director’s striking eye for the way physical space can affect emotions. USA 2017 Kogonada 104m.

The spiritual journey of a ninety-year-old atheist, Lucky, played by the late Harry Dean Stanton in his last film. The routines of a man living alone in a small desert town are put under a microscope, and what could easily be seen as negligible burgeons into a wilderness bloom of late-life calm absurdity. Lucky has a circle of acquaintances anyone could wish for. Including Howard (David Lynch) impeccably dressed, with idiosyncratic neckties, wants to make a will so that he can leave all his belongings to President Roosevelt! Such is the tone of ‘Lucky’ - deadpan absurdity, everyday madness and enlightenment through routine. Relish every detail of Stanton’s matter-of-factly fearless portrayal of a man who ran out of damns to give a long time ago, but still wants to make a graceful exit. A luminous and enthralling study of a young South Dakotan cowboy’s struggle following a near fatal injury. To say that Zhao’s film is a narrative built around the real-life experiences of her non-actors might imply less artistry than this magnificently crafted drama deserves. He plays a semi-autobiographical character alongside his real-life father and sister. After a near fatal rodeo accident, Jandreau struggles to leave the sport he loves. Neorealism: The New Italian Renaissance

In the aftermath of WW2, after decades of Fascist propaganda, warfare and poverty, a number of Italian filmmakers began focusing on the personal, especially the marginalised and powerless. They used documentary techniques – location shoots, natural lighting and non-professional actors – to reproduce reality. Labelled Italian Neorealism (INR), this movement has been described as “the most precious moment of film history”, “Neorealism breaks all the rules” and “washing our dirty laundry in public”. In Richard Cupidi’s informal workshop, we’ll develop a functional definition of INR, examine its historical context, tease out some important themes and stylistic practices, and show how these were applied cinematically with examples drawn from both iconic and lesser-known films. We’ll also touch on geopolitical factors, which affected INR’s evolution, e.g., American intervention in Italy’s 1948 elections. Later in the day we’ll explore in depth one of INR’s most signature films: ‘Bicycle Thieves’. This will be followed by a discussion about INR’s legacy – on the French New Wave, the New Hollywood, Indian Realism, and on auteurs such as Pier Paolo Pasolini. In our post-post-modern era where notions of “the real” have been down-graded, perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate this innovative period called Neorealism. Everyone welcome.

Last October, New Park’s Education department programmed our first stimulating celebration of cinema reflecting black history. This included the fascinating BFI documentary ‘Britain on Film: Black Britain’. This October’s offering is two contemporary fiction films made by black filmmakers. Our other film is ‘Yardie’, Idris Elba’s first film as director, and based on Victor Headley’s 1993 novel about black struggles in a gangland revenge crime thriller (Screens from Oct 19 - See pg36).

Powell & Pressburger

Booking Ref

We are delighted to welcome prolific film historian and writer Ian Christie back to New Park for this day course on an extraordinary film partnership. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger produced many of the outstanding British films of the 1930s-1950s period, including ‘49th Parallel’ (1941), ‘A Matter of Life and Death’ (1946), ‘Black Narcissus’ (1947), ‘The Red Shoes’ (1948), and ‘Peeping Tom’ (1960). This day course will first consider their partnership in the context of the periods before and after WW2, and then look at why they were re-discovered and championed with such enthusiasm in the 1980s by Scorsese among others. Ian Christie organised the first full retrospective of Powell and Pressburger’s work in 1978, wrote the first books about them, and knew both filmmakers during their later years. He is now Professor of Film and Media History at Birkbeck College and at Gresham College. A day not to be missed …
