welcome to
Chichester Cinema As I write this, the 25th Chichester International Film Festival is going strong. With the very first Drive-In screening in Chichester (Casablanca), along with the sold out Open Air Screening of ‘Finding Dory’, the Festival was always going to be a success – and I thank everyone involved (Patrons, Staff, Volunteers, Filmmakers, Distributors…) for making it possible.
Film Festival Drive-In
As Autumn arrives, so do the big-hitting films, placing themselves in the spotlight for Award Nominations in the new year. We have a fair few of these this season (some return from their previews in the Festival, some screened for the first time), complementing our usual fayre of cuttingedge Documentaries and eye-opening World Cinema. The Performance Season also has some very exciting events, including The National Theatre’s ‘The Deep Blue Sea’, Branagh’s ‘The Entertainer’, ‘Turandot’ from Sydney Harbour and ‘Anastasia’ live from the Royal Opera House. 2016 marks one hundred years since The Battle of the Somme, and on the 23rd October 1916, large crowds gathered at Poole’s Picture Palace (Corn Exchange) in Chichester to watch the film ‘The Battle of the Somme’. One Hundred years to the day… we will also screen the film, in an attempt to connect with our fellow citizens, and remember one of the most important periods of our collective history. See you at the Cinema

A magnificent Brian Cox stars as an ageing acting legend. When the question is to be or not to be, there is only one answer. Cox is at his theatrical best in this enjoyably mannered comedy drama, starring as Sir Michael Gifford, a retired Shakespearean actor suffering from Parkinson’s that has left him frustrated and gloriously grumpy, at his country manor. His family insists he has a carer and he ends up with Hungarian refugee Dorottya (Coco König) who has acting aspirations of her own. But unlike anyone else before her, she quickly bonds with him over their mutual love of Shakespeare. Of course the film mainly rests on Cox’s shoulders, and he has one of his best roles as the maddeningly self-absorbed but shrewdly observant actor. His rage at the deterioration of his body is convincingly rendered, and yet his mental faculties remain sharp as ever. Cox encourages us to care about the character without ever softening his portrayal. Chichester Film Festival’s recent Closing Gala film. UK/Hungary 2016 János Edelényi 89m

Hugh Grant co-stars as a British Shakespearean actor in this very funny film directed by Stephen Frears (‘The Queen’, ‘Philomena’). UK 2016 Stephen Frears 110m BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650

A camera crew catches up with David Brent, the former star of the fictional British series, “The Office” as he now fancies himself a rock star on the road. Now working as a rep selling cleaning products up and down the country, David Brent hasn’t given up his dream of becoming a rock star - or more specifically, singer/songwriter for fledgling rock band ‘Foregone Conclusion’. As he assembles a group of mercenary session musicians, a talented sidekick for street cred and an overpriced yet underwhelmed tour manager, he embarks upon a self-financed UK tour coming to a venue near every major city near you. An aging widow (Susan Sarandon) from New York City follows her daughter to Los Angeles in hopes of starting a new life after her husband passes away. With a new iPhone, an apartment near the Grove, and a comfortable bank account left to her by her beloved late husband, Marnie Minervini has happily relocated to LA to be near her daughter Lori (Rose Byrne), a successful (but still single) screenwriter, and smother her with motherly love. But when the dozens of texts, unexpected visits, and conversations dominated by unsolicited advice force Lori to draw strict personal boundaries, Marnie finds ways to channel her eternal optimism and forceful generosity to change the lives of others - as well as her own - and find a new purpose in life. Much like its main character, ‘The Meddler’ exudes an irresistible charm. USA 2015 Lorene Scafaria 100m BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650

Isabelle (Isabelle Huppert) and Gérard (Gerard Depardieu) go to a strange appointment in Death Valley, California. They have not seen each other for years (as in reality, Huppert and Depardieu had not worked together for over 35 years). The two stars are long-divorced former spouses, brought unhappily together by the suicide of their adult son, Michael. Both have received a letter from Michael - presumably penned before his death, though enigmatically referring to the event in the past tense - instructing them to meet in Death Valley on a specific date, whereupon he claims he will briefly appear to them. There are rewards to be gained from the initially brittle, gradually tender rapport between two actors of contrasting greatness, appropriately cast as estranged partners working toward a shared understanding of the distance between them. A charming British comedy about four male friends that will try literally anything to save their favourite local pub from closing down. After brainstorming through ideas, the group decides to write a chick lit, or more specifically, a ‘mummy porn’ novel following the huge success of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’. Soon after, the novel gets picked up! Now, the only problem is that the publisher insists that the young woman ‘author’ does press and publicity. Desperate to keep their involvement a secret, the four guys hire an out of work actress to ‘role play’ the part of the author. The film is funny, witty, charming and above all, entertaining. The impressive star cast is led by Christian McKay as David, alongside David Troughton, Dakota Blue Richards, Caroline Catz and Sir John Hurt. UK 2016 Tony Britten 93m

Julieta
With strong resonances of ‘All About My Mother’, Almodóvar’s new film sees him back on familiar female territory with his typical striking visual style and remarkable storytelling. Julieta (played by two actresses - Adriana Ugarte as her younger self and Emma Suárez as the older woman) has a chance meeting in the street with an old friend, who brings her up to speed with various friends and relations, not least her daughter whom it transpires she has not seen since she was 18. The girl, Antia, disappeared while on a mountain retreat but despite Julieta’s considerable efforts to find her, remained elusive. Almodóvar proves again that he is a master of delving deep into the female psyche. His distinctive voice grows in texture and depth with each new production. A beautiful film. The next ‘Bourne’ chapter finds the CIA’s most lethal former operative drawn out of the shadows. Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) has most of his memory back, but lacks info on the CIA program that ended with the murder of his father. Guilt eats at him for what he did as a government-built, $100 million killing machine. He picks up bare-knuckle fights to punish and be punished. But during an austerity riot in Greece, Bourne is contacted by former colleague Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) and learns that new CIA director Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones at his devilish best) is building his own shadow government with the help of compromised tech kingpin Aaron Kalloor (a terrific Riz Ahmed). The result could be something “worse than Snowden.” USA Paul Greengrass 123m

Pension Compléte François (Franck Dubosc) and Charlotte’s (Pascale Arbillot) marriage faces a crisis when their priorities differ. François and Charlotte manage a seaside, gastronomic hotelrestaurant together, but their marriage is not in a good state. François, a relentless obsessive, wants his Michelin Guide star, whereas Charlotte, hitting forty, dreams only of having a first child. This already complicated situation literally explodes the day that Charlotte’s former husband, Alex, whom everyone thought was killed in the horrendous tsunami in 2004, arrives on the scene. Cheeky, clumsy (in a good way) and full of sass, this is a lively and convivial movie that tickles both appetite and warm feelings. (Subtitles) France/Belgium Florent-Emilio Siri 81m

A love story drenched in nostalgia, this bittersweet romance from Woody Allen is a film of rare beauty. Set in the 1930s, we follow Bronx-born Bobby Dorfman (Jesse Eisenberg) to Hollywood, where he falls in love, and back to New York, where he is swept up in the vibrant world of high society nightclub life. Centring on events in the lives of Bobby’s colourful Bronx family, the film is a glittering valentine to the movie stars, socialites, playboys, debutantes, politicians, and gangsters who epitomized the excitement and glamour of the age. With a great jazzy soundtrack (what else could we expect from a Woody Allen film?), this is a beautifully-shot film by Allen regular Cinematographer Vittorio Storaro. A blend of comedy and drama that ends in a transcendently wistful final montage. USA 2016 Woody Allen 96m

The tale of a young girl, the Queen of England and a benevolent giant, who set out on an adventure to capture the evil, man-eating giants who have been invading the human world. The highlight of The BFG is its star - Mark Rylance, Spielberg’s newest muse, who gave a performance of tragic simplicity and economy in last year’s ‘Bridge of Spies’ and collected an Oscar for it. There, Rylance played a Soviet agent who had long ago sublimated whatever passion he had for his cause. Here, his BFG exudes explosive joy, rambling Dahl’s gleeful nonsense dialogue as he furrows and knits his CGI brow. Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s book (the first big-screen version) takes full advantage of all the fancy technology required to render the eponymous giant in all his big, friendly glory. The Wait
L’Attesa A mother (Juliette Binoche) meets her son’s fiancée at a villa in Sicily and gets to know her as she waits for her son to arrive. Binoche’s Anna, a single mother living in a remote Sicilian villa, mourns the death of her son, Giuseppe, when she is caught off-guard by the arrival of Jeanne (Lou de Laage), who claims to be his lover. Instead of admitting the truth, Anna decides to hold off “for the right time to tell her”. And so they wait. A clear disciple of Italian master Paolo Sorrentino, the film-school-trained Piero Messina served as assistant director on ‘The Great Beauty’, and he adopts many of his mentor’s stylistic predilections on his first feature. With its beautiful imaginary and haunting score, ‘The Wait’ has the charm of a dark fairy tale and quickly draws you in. (Subtitles) Italy 2015 Piero Messina 100m

Un Homme à la Hauteur Jean Dujardin (‘The Artist’), thanks to digital effects, plays a 4-foot-5 man wooing a “normal-height” woman. Diane is a well-known lawyer, divorced for three years. She loses her mobile telephone and receives a call from the person who finds it. That person is Alexandre (Dujardin), a charming man and the perfect gentleman. When they meet, there’s a surprise in store when Diane discovers he is only 4’5” tall. From that moment on, Diane tries to overcome the prejudices of society and her own fears to experience the best time of her life. This highly acclaimed biopic is a re-imagining of jazz trumpeter Chet Baker’s (Ethan Hawke) life in the 1960’s. When Chet stars in a film about himself, a romance heats up with his co-star, the enigmatic Jane (Carmen Ejogo). Production is shelved when Chet’s past comes back to haunt him and it appears he may never play music again, but Jane challenges him to mount a musical comeback. Trumpeter Kevin Turcotte does very clever work to chart Baker’s evolving abilities, suggesting the playing of a man attempting to deliver highly developed musical ideas through an unreliable medium. Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie are briefly referred to and jazz purists may be confused, but this is a real film, not a biographical documentary. Hawke’s performance has been widely described as a career best performance by just about every film critic. USA 2015 Robert Budreau 97m

The Student and Mister Henri

L’Étudiante et Monsieur Henri Writer-director Ivan Calberac directs veteran Claude Brasseur in a very funny adaptation of a Paris Boulevard stage hit. An elderly curmudgeon (Claude Brasseur) lets out a room in his large apartment rent-free to a young student (Noémie Schmidt) on condition that she does everything in her power to ruin his son’s marriage. Strapped for cash, she accepts Henri’s offer. Constance deploys her seductive skills and soon enough the forty-something Paul is falling for her, dressing in cool leather jackets, clubbing and sending text messages in (misspelt) suburban slang. If all this sounds like the premise for a farce, it’s because that is precisely how this movie started out in real life. France 2015 Ivan Calbérac 98m

Based on the extraordinary true story of Operation Anthropoid, the WWII mission to assassinate SS General Reinhard Heydrich. Heydrich, the main architect behind the Final Solution, was the Reich’s third in command behind Hitler and Himmler and the leader of Nazi forces in Czechoslovakia. The film follows two soldiers from the Czechoslovakian army-in-exile, Josef Gabčík (Cillian Murphy) and Jan Kubi (Jamie Dornan), who are parachuted into their occupied homeland in December 1941. With limited intelligence and little equipment in a city under lock down, they must find a way to assassinate Heydrich, an operation that would change the face of Europe forever. In Hemingway-esque fashion, ‘Anthropoid’ examines the manner in which the true characters of men and women are revealed during what the writer called “the moment of truth,” the instant one comes face to face with death. In the mould of ‘Little Miss Sunshine’, a super-dad Viggo Mortensen determined to raise his kids on his own terms takes his family on a road trip. Not to be confused with the plethora of superheroes currently smashing each other to bits on our cinema screens, Matt Ross’ ‘Captain Fantastic’ is an effective, comic road movie. Mortensen plays Ben, a man who has taken his family into the wilds to live the “good life”. However, when their absent mother Leslie (Trin Miller) dies, their world is completely rocked. Although initially reluctant, Ben loads up the family bus (named “Steve”) and the group head off to New Mexico in time to pull off “Operation: Rescue Mother”. The predictable clash of cultures is pulled off with real flair. A trip to a diner, a supermarket and a tussle with a traffic policeman are all managed with wit, and there are some great comic moments. Things become markedly more serious when they arrive at the funeral where they have to confront Leslie’s parents (Frank Langella) and the possible fact that their lifestyle is no longer sustainable as all the forces of reaction line up against them. ‘Captain Fantastic’ is a slickly made comedy with a witty, politically articulate script and some wonderful cinematography by former Jacques Audiard regular Stéphane Fontaine. The children are very funny and Mortensen is wonderful in the title role, showing himself a light hand at comedy. Acclaimed at Sundance and Cannes (in competition). USA 2016 Matt Ross 119m

A dachshund passes from oddball owner to oddball owner, whose radically dysfunctional lives are all impacted by the pooch. Solondz’s film is not only a state-of-the-art movie, it’s a state-of-theworld movie. It cracks open hilarious, jaw-dropping perplexities in modern American life, yet also recognizes everyday tragedies. The eponymous dachshund travels through people’s lives in four linear segments: A dad (Tracy Letts) gives the dog to his son, Remi (Keaton Nigel Cooke), who is recuperating from cancer; Dawn (Indie darling Greta Gerwig) is on a road trip with Wiener-dog; it appears with college film teacher Danny DeVito who is trying to sell a script to Hollywood; and finally, Wiener-dog is as a pet named ‘Cancer’ with Grandmother Nana (Ellen Burstyn). A look at the childhood life of a post-World War I leader. A grippingly dispassionate period psychodrama. Set against the backdrop of the 1919 Treaty of Versailles, this is a tautly drawn drama that juxtaposes the rise of fascism in context of an apparently angelic young boy. Robert Pattinson has a series of telling cameos, though at the heart of the film is 10-year-old Tom Sweet as the manipulative boy Prescott, tussling with his parents, played by Berenice Bejo (‘The Artist’) and Liam Cunningham. Based partly upon a story by Sartre and loosely inspired by the early childhood experiences of many of the great dictators of the 20th Century, this is an ominous portrait of emerging evil. Great design and a memorable soundtrack by Scott Walker. (Some subtitles) UK / Hungary / France 2015 Brady Corbet 116m

Garn Every stitch tells a tale. International artists and knitters take a simple skein of yarn to create their extraordinary ideas and stories. Meet the artists who are redefining the tradition of knit and crochet, bringing yarn out of the house and into the world. Reinventing our relationship with this colourful tradition, ‘Yarn’ weaves together wool graffiti artists, circus performers, and structural designers. In Iceland, Tinna veers political, crocheting “Free Palestine” into textiles that she tacks up in public. In Italy, another artist crochets enormous, spiderweb-like structures for children to climb on. In NY, Olek challenges the stereotype that yarn is inherently feminine. The film offers fascinating insight into what yarn can do in the talented hands of those determined to elevate mere craft to high art. Netherlands/Cuba 2016 Bórdur Bragi Jónsson 76m

An epic action-drama set during the Civil War, and tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newton Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight (Matthew McConaughey) launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War. McConaughey pitches his performance right into that sweet spot of feral nobility that marks his best work, and it’s effortless. Everything is framed beautifully: the emerald chamber of the swamp where the rebels hide out; a soldier’s head caved in by a bullet. The camera quietly observes all. USA 2016 Gary Ross 139m

Two New York teens struggle to keep their parents’ personal business from sabotaging their connection. 13-year-old Jake’s (Theo Taplitz) drawing of yellow stars against a green sky is dismissed by a burnt-out middle-school teacher. It may seem like a rather insignificant moment, but just contrast the potential influence that adult comment has on his artistic future with the more overtly encouraging conversations he shares with Tony (Michael Barbieri), the son of the immigrant seamstress who rents his grandfather’s store. The fact is, what these two boys share is beautiful. Instead of laying on the melodrama, Sachs (‘Love is Strange’) keeps things subtle, telling his story almost exclusively through quiet moments. The performances are impeccable. Sachs cites two Ozu films about children in conflict with their parents as the initial spark. This is a little gem. USA 2016 Ira Sachs 85m BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650

Hunt for the Wilderpeople
A hilarious, touching crowd-pleaser, which reminds us about the journey of growing up (at any age). Raised on hip-hop and foster care, Ricky gets a fresh start in the New Zealand countryside with his new foster family: loving Aunt Bella, cantankerous Uncle Hec, and dog Tupac. When a tragedy strikes, he and Hec go on the run creating a national manhunt: should they go out in a blaze of glory or overcome their differences. Equal parts road comedy and rousing adventure story, director Taika Waititi (‘What We Do in the Shadows’) masterfully weaves lively humour with emotionally honest performances by Sam Neill and Julian Dennison. This loopy absurdist comedy is the final work of Andrzej Zulawski, the famed Polish filmmaker who died in February. Witold who has just failed the bar, and his companion Fuchs, who has recently quit his fashion job, are staying at a guesthouse run by the intermittently paralytic Madame Woytis. Upon discovering a sparrow hanged in the woods near the house, Witold’s reality mutates into a whirlwind of tension, histrionics, foreboding omens, and surrealistic logic as he becomes obsessed with Madame Woytis’s daughter Lena, newly married to Lucien. This literary adaptation suffused with Zulawski’s trademark freneticism, transforms Polish writer Witold Gombrowicz’s novel of the same name into an ominous and manic exploration of desire. It’s a surreal piece of mischief, equal parts breezy fun and maddening confusion. (Subtitles) France/Portugal 2015 Andrzej Zulawski 103m

The Clan
The true and chilling story of the Puccio Clan, a family who kidnapped and killed people in the 80s, delivered with Scorsese-like swagger. The Puccios... A model family? There are few that could match them. The father played by Guillermo Francella (‘The Secret in Their Eyes’) appears a dignified man. The mother is a dedicated teacher. The children? Well-educated and promised to a bright future. Except that... all this respectability is nothing but a smokescreen! The truth is that Arquimedes Puccio is also - and mainly - the tyrannical leader of a criminal gang composed of... his wife and children. This film was highly acclaimed at festival screenings, with comparisons to filmmaker Michel Gondry (‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’) and writer Charlie Kaufman (‘Being John Malkovich’, ‘Adaptation’). Director Nölle’s greatest achievement is to keep the magic realm firmly anchored to the real so that reality feels touched by imagination rather than smothered by it. The Battle of the Somme

On October 23rd 1916, citizens of Chichester gathered in large crowds to watch ‘The Battle of the Somme’ at Poole’s Pictures on East Street (Corn Exchange Building). One hundred years to the day after its first showing in Chichester, we can watch this wartime classic and reflect upon the remembrance of the First World War. This film (a documentary with some re-enacted footage) depicts the terrible and largest WWI battle; it took place in a long front north and south of the River Somme in northern France, and more than a million lives were lost from the various nationalities involved. This classic depiction of warfare on the Western Front that was released to the British public in 1916. The film had a tremendous impact on individuals and communities as it allowed a connection to the war at the front, and records show that 20 million tickets were sold for the film, at a time when the country had a population of 43 million! For Chichester, this film brought the war to life for many people who had family or friends serving on the Western Front. Just as the film allowed a closer connection to what was experienced by individuals during the war, so the film today allows us a closer connection to what wartime life in Chichester was like. Hollywood’s Flight from reality in Troubled Times
Day Course by Nick Smedley Hollywood film-makers have always understood the fascination of conjuring up fantasy worlds. Indeed, some might say that Hollywood cinema is a fantasy world in itself. With ‘Star Wars’ back on the agenda, this one day course looks at American cinema’s preoccupation with imagining a different world from the one we all inhabit. Why do American film-makers have this obsession and what does it tell us about American life and values? Can we trace a development in these kinds of films over time? Nick Smedley, our presenter, is an independent film historian who has written and lectured on this topic. There will be plenty of scope for discussion and Q and A in this stimulating and lively day course. Come back to the future with Nick on 24th September at New Park!! BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650

Transcending genres, they have produced dramas with surreally funny moments and comedies with seriously dark undertones. Their films remind us that within our collective human condition, tragedy and comedy usually co-exist. In this informal and interactive workshop, we’ll discuss the nature of comedy using short examples drawn from the brothers’ films. And, to help us understand how their humour “works” cinematically, we’ll look closely at a selection of the Coens’ films, along with their scripts, interviews and cultural references. The aim, ultimately, is to answer that most existential of questions about the Coen brothers: They do make comedies, don’t they? Everyone welcome but please remember to bring along your sense of humour.
