Aretha Franklin sings in her father’s church choir as a child and grows up to become an international musical superstar and legend.
‘Respect’ chronicles Franklin’s life and career from her Detroit childhood, in which the young prodigy was dragged out of bed on Saturday nights to sing for her father’s famous guests, to her recording of the timeless 1972 gospel album ‘Amazing Grace’: Franklin’s career-bestselling work and, as the movie frames it, a return to the singer’s church roots that, after a low period in her life, nearly saved her. Jennifer Hudson is captivating in the lead role, chosen specifically by Franklin herself, before she passed away in 2018. Director Tommy and writer Tracey Scott Wilson are making their cinematic debuts with this splendid retelling of Franklin’s early life and career. However, they come to the project with impressive stage backgrounds, which inform every aspect of their approach. Any stage, of course, needs a star who can command the space... and Jennifer Hudson does so, without any doubt. With Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald and Mary J Blige in the supporting cast. Canada/US 2021 Liesl Tommy 145m

Chichester Cinema at New Park supporting the wider community
CCNP is committed to extending and developing the love of Cinema, not just amongst those who are able to attend screenings. As a consequence, this year the Board of Trustees decided to embark on the first of several projects designed to reach different areas of the local community.
Realising that when people reach a certain age going to the cinema becomes far more difficult, we launched ‘Cinema in a Box’ where we provide a recent DVD together with delicious cakes supplied by COOK in Chichester. Residential care homes in Chichester and the wider area have signed up to the scheme, which enables them to plan showing the film at a time to suit their schedules, along with a cup of tea and a delicious treat.
Having taken steps to support the older generation, we then looked at how we could work alongside some younger members of our local community.
The Snowdrop Trust is a local charity supporting children with challenging illness and their families. Mel Driver (Cinema), Di Levantine (Snowdrop), David Phillips (Cinema) They too can experience difficulty coming to a regular screening, and thus Movie Magic in a Box was born! We wanted families to enjoy a night at the movies in the comfort of their own home. So we put together a box of goodies including a Just Eat voucher, Netflix subscription, plus popcorn and Montezuma chocolate.
Backdating to the start of the year, we have used the birthdays of each child and done our best to ensure that they receive their box on their special day. We also invited every family to the Open Air Screening of ‘Space Jam: A New Legacy’
Both schemes could not function without the generous support of those who support Chichester Cinema at New Park, be it on a regular basis, generously offering their ticket value of cancelled screenings, and to those who have made donations in memory of someone who has enjoyed time spent sharing the love of film with fellow cinema goers.
We hope to continue and extend these projects as well as offering further links to the local community where we see an opportunity to share our love of film. Throughout the course of the coming year we will keep you posted with the schemes and ideas that we hope some of you will feel able to support, either as volunteers or by making a donation.
