welcome to

Chichester Cinema

And so… after 209 days… the Magic of Cinema returns to New Park. I am sure that every person reading this has experienced these recent strange days in similar fashion: we have learnt to adjust our customary ways of life; we have become more aware of the distance between our family and friends; and we have missed that feeling the Arts can bring to us all. Chichester Cinema at New Park is no different. Through peaks and troughs, we have shut down; worried about our patrons, staff and volunteers; and planned with excitement this long-awaited re-opening. This first season will be a mini season of sorts (at 4 weeks) starting off with a fortnight of two screenings per day, and then three screenings per day from Oct 30. This one-off accompanying mini brochure reflects the change in format to our programme, but we hope to go back to our normal seasonal brochure very soon. Together with the great work of the New Park Community & Arts Association to prepare the Centre for all of their room hirers, we have devised a safe and pleasant environment to welcome you back to seeing films on the big screen (See pg11). I would like to introduce to you Richard Warburton (pic right), our new Operations Manager. You will all get to know Richard over the next few weeks as we prepare for re-opening. Some of you may remember that face from somewhere... well, Richard has participated in four of our annual Mind for Movies film quizzes, and has actually been on the winning team twice. I am sure you will all join with me to welcome Richard to the team and to the New Park Cinema community. I cannot tell you enough how much we have missed bringing you the best films from all over the world during these utterly unique times, and how much I personally have missed seeing the happy faces of our patrons as they step out of the auditorium after seeing another great film. Hopefully, this selection of films that we have put together (which includes our participation in the annual French Film Festival UK - look out for the films with the logo below) will quench that thirst for new, quality cinema, whilst at the same time bringing back a selection of films that were cancelled in the Spring, which so many of you have asked to bring back. And with the closure of theatres and concert halls , the opportunity to experience live theatre, opera, ballet and concerts is sadly unavailable to us. However it is even more important to offer the next best thing: to enjoy live performances especially recorded for the large Cinema screen. See you at the Cinema

Ammonite Special Event

Sat 17 Oct 19:00

Francis Lee’s sensational biopic of palaeontology pioneer Mary Anning reimagines her loving encounter with a woman trapped in a stifling marriage. Screened in conjunction with the London Film Festival, who close their festival with this film. It is odd to reflect that Kate Winslet and Saoirse Ronan have not yet featured in a film together. Ammonite unites them at last. Mary Anning (Winslet), a pioneering palaeontologist collecting specimens along Dorset’s Jurassic Coast is entrusted to care for Charlotte (Ronan), the young wife of a wealthy tourist. Initially they clash but despite differences of class and personality a bond grows between them compelling the two women to determine the true nature of their relationship. Expect suppressed emotions and scandal set against rugged and magnificent southern coastline. UK 2020 Francis Lee 120m

Misbehaviour A breezy comedic delight that manages to handle serious themes with a light touch.

Fri 16 Oct 15:00 Sun 18 Oct 15:00 Tue 20 Oct 19:00 Wed 21 Oct 15:00

In 1970, the Miss World competition took place in London. At the time, the most-watched TV show on the planet with over 100 million viewers. This is the story of that infamous night when two women from the Women’s Liberation Movement launched a stage invasion. Keira Knightley and Jessie Buckley play the protesters. Greg Kinnear is an oafish Bob Hope with Rhys Ifans and Keeley Hawes as the promoters. A feelgood comedy to tackle the blatant issues raised by international beauty pageants. Parasite

Original plus Black & White version

Fri 16 Oct 19:00 Mon 19 Oct 15:00 Wed 21 Oct 19:00 Thu 22 Oct 19:00 (B&W)

Bong Joon Ho’s brilliant Oscar Best Film winner returns in its original version plus the new black-and-white version. An urgent, brilliantly layered look at timely social themes which finds writer-director Bong Joon Ho in near-total command of his craft. In this pitch-black modern fairytale, we meet the Park Family: the picture of aspirational wealth. And the Kim Family, rich in street smarts but not much else. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist, to the Parks. Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. Also winner of Oscars for best Director, Screenplay and Foreign Film, along with Baftas for Director, Screenplay and Foreign Film. (Subtitles) South Korea 2019 Bong Joon Ho 132m 01243 786650

Love Sarah There’s nothing half-baked about this gentle and warm-hearted bakery-set drama about family, community and later life romance. Cakes feature prominently.

Sat 17 Oct 15:00 Mon 19 Oct 19:00 Tue 20 Oct 15:00 Thu 22 Oct 15:00

Determined to fulfil her late mother’s dream of opening a bakery in charming Notting Hill, 19-year-old Clarissa enlists the help of her mother’s best friend Isabella and her eccentric estranged grandmother Mimi (Celia Imrie). There is more than a cinnamon whiff of Richard Curtis about this film which makes no apology for its romanticised affection for London. Celia Imrie’s performance is worth it alone and is a delight, ‘exuding the energy of an angry man who hasn’t had a nap this afternoon’. UK 2020 Eliza Schroeder 97m PERFORMANCE

Michael Ball and Alfie Boe - Back Together

Sun 18 Oct 19:00 Tickets £15 (Friends/Students £12.50)

O2 Concert

The world’s ultimate musical duo, Michael Ball and Alfie Boe are ‘Back Together’ and set to delight cinema audiences up and down the country with the final show of their sold-out tour. The superstar pair will take on their favourite musical theatre, pop and rock tracks at the O2 Arena, performing songs such as ‘The Greatest Show’ ‘Something Inside so Strong’ and a brilliantly arranged ‘Queen Medley’. Showcasing their phenomenal voices and undeniable on-stage chemistry, Ball and Boe’s irresistible charm will undoubtedly light up the big screen. 150m including interval.

Military Wives A feelgood underdog true story this Britcom hits all the right notes.

Fri 23 Oct 15:00 Mon 26 Oct 15:00 Wed 28 Oct 19:00

Lockdown stifled the release of this delightful slice of feelgood comedy drama. Kristin Scott Thomas and Sharon Horgan are soldiers’ wives whose husbands are serving in Afghanistan. There are echoes here of ‘Calender Girls’ and ‘Brassed Off’ as the two women start up a choir as a means to distract themselves from the tensions and difficulties of life on the home front. The choir members comprise an assortment of loveable misfits who unlock hidden talents as the choir progresses towards the big show at the Royal Albert Hall. This is a satisfying bundle of wit and whimsy. UK 2019 Peter Cattaneo 112m 4

Wed 28 Oct 15:00 Thu 29 Oct 15:00 & 19:00 If you found Nolan’s ‘Interstellar’ and ‘Inception’ riveting yet baffling, then prepare yourself for more of the director’s tinkering with time and structure. The plot concerns ‘the Protagonist’ (John David Washington) who is tasked with preventing World War III. What makes his task even harder is the inversion of time. As always with Nolan you get a truly cinematic experience. Expect extensive globetrotting from one dazzling set piece to another. Buckle up. UK 2020 Christopher Nolan 150m PERFORMANCE

Giselle

The quintessential Romantic classic, a love affair that begins in the real world and continues beyond the grave. The ballet’s title role also offers one of the great challenges of the ballet repertory, as Giselle transforms from an innocent peasant girl, to a forgiving spirit who saves her lover from death. For the ballerina this is a role of two contrasting halves: in Act I she must appear naïve and artless, her dancing alive with an earthy enthusiasm; in Act II she transforms into light and air, her dancing so ethereal as to seem weightless. In Peter Wright’s production, the dual aspect of the ballet is perfectly achieved. Composed by Adolphe Adam revised by Joseph Horovitz. Dancers include Marianela Nuñez and Vadim Muntagirov. 150m including interval. International Panorama: France

Portrait of a Lady on Fire

Sat 24 Oct 19:00 Tue 27 Oct 19:00

Portrait de la Jeune Fille en Feu Vivid 18th century portrait of the stolen romantic relationship between two young women, who have a persuasive onscreen connection, which gives this affair a life of its own. Brittany 1760. Painter Marianne (Noémie Merlant) is commissioned to do the wedding portrait of Héloïse (Adèle Haenel). Héloïse is a reluctant bride-to-be and Marianne must paint her without her knowing. She observes her by day and secretly paints her at night. Intimacy and attraction grow between the two as they share Héloïse’s first and last moments of freedom. One of the hits at Cannes 2019. (Subtitles) France 2019 Céline Sciamma 119m 01243 786650

Hope Gap A bracingly original and nuanced drama set against a landscape of pebbly beaches, rocky crags and chalky cliffs. Filmed in Sussex.

Fri 30 Oct 14:15 & 17:45 Sat 31 Oct 14:15 & 17:45 Sun 1 Nov 17:45 & 20:45 Mon 2 Nov 14:15 Tue 3 Nov 17:45 & 20:45 Wed 4 Nov 14:15 & 17:45 Thu 5 Nov 14:15 & 17:45

Delving into the anatomy of a broken relationship, ‘Hope Gap’ stars Annette Bening as Grace and Bill Nighy as Edward who suddenly announces his intention to end their long marriage. Described by writer director William Nicholson as a midpoint between ‘Brief Encounter’ and ‘Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf’ the film explores the emotional fallout on Grace and her grown son. This is a classy and insightful directorial debut as well as a reminder that some couples are better off apart. UK 2019 William Nicholson 100m

On the Rocks A young mother reconnects with her larger-than-life playboy father on an adventure through New York.

Sat 31 Oct 20:45 Tue 3 Nov 14:15 Thu 5 Nov 20:45

Having experienced sudden doubts about her marriage, Laura (Rashida Jones) teams up with her father (Bill Murray) to tail her husband. What follows is a love letter to New York with Murray and Jones prowling the city at night, careering from uptown parties to downtown hotspots. However, at the heart of their journey lies an examination of their own relationship. Coppola is at her light-hearted best in this clever generation-clash comedy that slyly observes how we see relationships differently from our parents. La Verité

Seeing French divinities Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche together is enough to make this movie a must-see. A movie star’s dubious memoires spark family uproar. Hirokazu Kore-eda directed the sublime ‘Shoplifters’ so hopes are high for this whimsical French drama starring Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche and Ethan Hawke. Lumir (Binoche) returns home with her American husband (Hawke) to celebrate the publication of her famous mother’s autobiography. The reunion proves stormy as Lumir finds her recollections differ markedly from her mother’s. Deneuve’s actress mother is irresistible as she embarks on a sharp and funny battle of wits with her daughter. A bittersweet observation of the fluidity of parent/child relationships. She decides to protect him and is brought into the middle of a drug network. Les Misérables

Sat 7 Nov 20:45 Tue 10 Nov 17:45

Three French policemen preside over a delicate status quo that soon escalates to boiling point. Compelling and terrifyingly real. By-the-book cop Stephane, only just arrived from Cherbourg, joins the anti-criminality brigade of Montfermeil in a sensitive district of the Paris suburbs. Paired up with Chris and Gwada whose methods are less scrupulous, he witnesses the tensions between the various neighbourhood groups. The theft of a lion cub from a travelling circus is the catalyst for violence. Throw in a cop with a hair-trigger and the ingredients for a full blown riot are ready to stir. Propelled by Pink Noise’s electronic score, Ladj Ly’s debut is a deft depiction of the escalation of chaos. ‘It is the most incendiary crime film to emerge from French cinema since Mathieu Kassovitz’s La Haine.’ Kevin Maher - The Times. The Trial of the Chicago 7

Tue 10 Nov 20:45 Thu 12 Nov 14:15

In 1969, seven people were charged by the US government with conspiracy and more, arising from the protests at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin has clearly caught the directing bug following his entertaining debut with ‘Molly’s Game’. Sorkin’s film tackles the trial of seven activists accused of inciting riots during the the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago. These events were documented in 1969’s ‘Medium Cool’. Sorkin, however, places emphasis on the aftermath and has recruited an ensemble cast including Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Mark Rylance, Michael Keaton and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Sorkin’s knack for scintillating trial dialogue was first exhibited in ‘A Few Good Men’. Hope for more of the same. USA 2020 Aaron Sorkin 129m 8

NEW 4K RESTORATION: Salvatore returns to his hometown to attend the funeral of Alfredo the town’s projectionist and surrogate father to Salvatore. A piece of cinematic escapism that explores the very reasons we escape to the cinema. Sentimental is too often used pejoratively. Cinema Paradiso is sentimental in that it conjures feelings of tenderness, sadness and nostalgia. And in the hands of director Giuseppe Tornatore these emotions are front and centre as Salvatore recalls his childhood and adolescence. Of course it looks gorgeous and has a wistful soundtrack by Ennio Morricone. But it’s the wonderful chemistry between Alfredo (Philippe Noiret) and the young Salvatore that tends to leave such an impression on all who see it. Bring tissues. Edmond

‘Cyrano de Bergerac’ gets the ‘Shakespeare in Love’ treatment in this unashamedly entertaining backstage farce. Alexis Michalik’s period-set biopic reveals the drama behind the playwright’s most famous work. We meet Edmond Rostand (Thomas Solivérès) during the explosion of artistic production that marked the Belle Époque in late 19th-century France. Despite being a gifted writer, his career has yet to take off, and his bruised ego makes it difficult for him to find further inspiration. But, with the support of the legendary Sarah Bernhardt (Clémentine Célarié), stage legend Constant Coquelin (Olivier Gourmet) approaches Edmond and demands to star in his next play. With only three weeks to write it and only the title – Cyrano de Bergerac – to work with, can he accomplish the impossible? (Subtitles) France 2019 Alexis Michalik 112m PERFORMANCE
