Legend (pg21) As Autumn arrives, so do the big-hitting films, placing themselves in the spotlight for Award Nominations in the new year. We have a fair few of these this season, complementing our usual fayre of cutting-edge Documentaries and eye-opening World Cinema. We present ‘Legend’ (above) starring Tom Hardy as both Reggie and Ronnie Kray; ‘Everest’ (with Jake Gyllenhaal) which tells the fateful events of 1996 where many lives were lost after a storm on the world’s highest peak. Look out also for ‘Suffragette’ with Carey Mulligan as Emilie Pankhurst; Woody Allen’s ‘Irrational Man’; Robert Redford as author Bill Bryson in ‘A Walk in the Woods’; and Willem Dafoe as ‘Pasolini’ (we will also screen the Pasolini classic: ‘The Canterbury Tales’). From Australia comes the Indie ’52 Tuesdays’; ‘Tangarines’ from Georgia; the gorgeous looking ‘Theeb’ from the United Arab Emirates; the cinema-poetry of ‘Horse Money’ from Portugal; the ‘Twin Peak’s-like ‘P’tit Quinquin’ from France; and the not-to-be-missed epic from Russia, ‘Hard to be a God’. To mark the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, we join forces with the Tangmere Museum to present four special events, which include a Q&A with a hero who was there, two classic films, a talk on the most critical day of the battle, and a live musical performance transmitted by satellite from Biggin Hill. See you at the Cinema

Gemma Bovery An ex-Parisian passionate about Gustave Flaubert who settled into a village as a baker, has his world turned by a newly arrived English couple. This is a clever re-invention of Flaubert’s literary masterpiece ‘Madame Bovary’. An erudite baker Martin (the wonderful Fabrice Luchini) observes the arrival of a London couple in his Normandy town and immediately becomes infatuated with the vivacious Gemma (Gemma Arterton), and starts seeing parallels to his favourite novel. Village life is gorgeously portrayed and most importantly the film succeeds in making you care about what is essentially a silly woman making bad decisions; like many French films it’s all about the gloriousness of women, which Arterton more than lives up to. Finely balanced between comedy and drama this is a real French charmer. (Subtitles) France 2014 Anne Fontaine 99m

Robert Carlyle launches his directorial career with a grisly black comedy set in his native Glasgow – and gifts Emma Thompson a standout role alongside Ray Winstone. The film centres on a socially awkward hairdresser (Carlyle) who lives a life of humdrum mediocrity, until he cheerfully embarks on a new career as a serial killer. The demon barber’s macabre new life is complicated when he discovers his mother (Thompson) has her own secret. Winstone plays the local police inspector attempting to uncover the crime of the century while battling with his own hilariously inept colleagues including Tom Courtenay as his idiotic superior. Stylish visuals, ripe language, gruesome, and very black humour, the film spirals to an extraordinary climax that has to be seen to be believed. UK 2015 Robert Carlyle 100m BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650

Concerto: A Beethoven Journey
Pianist Leif Ove Andsnes takes a musical and personal journey to understand and interpret what is undoubtedly one of the greatest sets of piano concerti ever written: Beethoven’s five piano concerti. Andsnes is considered to be one of the top pianists of the age. In this unique film, we witness his four year journey to perform and record the five Beethoven piano concerti. Against this wonderful backbone, we also track Beethoven’s life from new-kid-on-the-block in Vienna to greatest composer alive. Phil Grabsky has secured exclusive and intimate access over this journey and follows Leif Ove all over the world. This is a beautifully crafted film with lavish cinematography. There are exquisite and exclusive classical performances filmed with the freedom to be heard for more than brief moments, allowing the film to move from fast paced moments with Leif Ove on the road to calm, serene, pensive moments of performance. Marshland La Isla Minima Two homicide detectives who appear to be poles apart must settle their differences and bring a murderer to justice before more young women lose their lives. 1980. A series of murders bring together two disparate characters to investigate the cases in the Spanish ‘deep south’. They must put aside their differences if they are to successfully hunt down a killer who for years has terrorized a community in the shadow of a general disregard for women rooted in a misogynistic past. Noirishly tense (similar to Nordic noir), its tight focus on character, its realism and its social critique adding up to a grippingly intense whole - and that’s not to mention it’s satisfyingly twisting plotline. The exceptional cinematography in the Catalan landscape looks fantastic. Garnered all the Goya awards including Best Picture. (Subtitles) Spain 2104 Alberto Rodríguez 105m

A teen artist living in 1970’s San Francisco enters into an affair with her mother’s boyfriend. Sundance winner that successfully premiered at Edinburgh. In 1970’s San Francisco, precocious young cartoonist Minnie (Bel Powley) can’t wait to grow up. Her mother’s (Kristen Wiig) no-holds-barred approach to partying colours her adolescent judgement, encouraging her to seek grown-up thrills anywhere she can. Instigating a liaison with her mother’s boyfriend, Monroe (Alexander Skarsgård), she begins a passionate affair with a man two decades her senior, and despite the age gap remains utterly in control. Expertly handled and light-hearted in tone, the film boasts great performances, including a truly accomplished central performance from star-in-the-ascendant Bel Powley. USA 2014 Marielle Heller 103m

A quietly powerful study of a long-term marriage shaken by shock revelations, starring Charlotte Rampling and Tom Courtenay. There is just one week until Kate’s (Rampling) 45th wedding anniversary when a letter arrives for her husband Geoff (Courtenay)… the body of his first love has been discovered in the Swiss Alps. Kate had known about Katya, but not about their engagement, and now she must reassess her marriage in the shadow of her husband’s past love. Courtenay is so apt as the soft-spoken and rather private Geoff that even modest changes in his aspect register vividly. A wiry Rampling brings Kate’s whirling emotions to the screen with similar economy. This is a moving and absorbing drama, featuring two performers offering a lifetime’s wisdom and technique in their performances. It’s a film of small moments and tiny gestures that leaves a very, very big impression. It opened the recent Chichester International Film Festival, and was the outstanding British film at the Berlin Festival. UK 2015 Andrew Haigh 93m

A young Bedouin boy embarks on a perilous journey to guide a British officer to his secret destination during WW1. The film’s eponymous hero is prematurely burdened with the responsibilities of manhood when his tribe is unwittingly pulled into WW1 by an Englishman (Jack Fox) passing through their camp. ‘Theeb’ might herald the inauguration of a new genre - the Bedouin western - as the desert setting evokes the stark beauty of Monument Valley. Aida Recorded live A spectacular production of Verdi’s epic opera from the amazing setting of Sydney Harbour. In ‘Aida’, Verdi masterfully pits the intimate affairs of the heart against the grandeur of the universe: where kingdoms rise and fall and the sands of time grind onwards. There could be no grander setting for such an opera than Sydney Harbour itself, with the Opera House silhouetted against the setting sun. It’s a monumental undertaking, with a team of more than 700 people involved in the project before a single note is heard over the harbour. ‘Aida’ is at once an historic epic and an utterly relatable human tragedy. It will make for an interesting comparison with the equally amazing La Scala production we are presenting in November. Performed in Italian with English translations. Director - Gale Edwards; Cast: Latonia Moore, Roberto Aronica. Running time 145m including interval.

Over the course of a midsummer night in Fermanagh in 1890, an unsettled daughter of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy encourages her father’s valet to seduce her. Liv Ullmann’s adaptation of Strindberg’s script stays very close to the original; the main change being that it now takes place on an estate in Ireland. Ullmann opens up the action only slightly, with the revelling Midsummer Night’s Eve crowds always offstage, heard but never seen, and fills the score with mournful Schubert and Bach. The incredible depth of human psychology, the love hate relationships with each other, their own lives, the class system, is explored both in action, dialogue, and in the settings chosen for each part of the play. The three leads, Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell and Samantha Morton, each deliver some very challenging monologues, impressive performances - unabashedly theatrical! Draw on Sweet Night Plus Q&A with Director Tony Britten We welcome director Tony Britten to introduce his film about one of the finest musicians of Elizabethan England. John Wilbye is generally considered to be the finest madrigalist of the Elizabethan era. What we don’t know, is why he stopped writing in 1609, why Lady Kytson elevated him to the station of wealthy farmer, and why he moved in with her daughter Lady Mary after Lady Elizabeth Kytson’s death. Tony Britten has written a script which imagines Wilbye’s love life as the fuel of his genius. His music is brilliantly interpreted by Fagiolini and the parts of Wilbye, his lovers and friend are played by high profile British actors such as Ania Sowinski, Doon Mackichan, Sophia di Martino, Milanka Brooks, Mark Arends and Christian McKay. In Woody Allen’s newest film, a tormented philosophy professor finds a will to live when he commits an existential act. He becomes involved with a teacher (Parker Posy) as well as a precocious student (Emma Stone), but it takes a dramatic, existential act to turn his life around and make him see the world through a much rosier and more positive perspective. Abe is another of Phoenix’s gallery of troubled outsiders, such as the alcoholic Freddie Quell in ‘The Master’ and the pilladdicted Johnny Cash in ‘Walk the Line’, although this time he is less troubled. After spending two decades in England, Bill decides the best way to connect with his US homeland is to hike the Appalachian Trail. Instead of retiring to enjoy his loving and beautiful wife (Emma Thompson) and happy family, celebrated travel writer Bill Bryson (Robert Redford), challenges himself to hike the Appalachian Trail 2,200 miles of America’s most spectacular and rugged countryside from Georgia to Maine. The peace and tranquillity he hopes to find, though, is anything but, once he agrees to being accompanied by his long lost friend Katz (Nick Nolte), a down-on-his-luck serial philanderer who sees the trip as a way to sneak out of paying some debts and sneak into one last adventure before it is too late. The trouble is, the two have a completely different definition of the word, “adventure”. Pasolini Abel Ferrara documents the final day in the life of Italian writer, director, and poet Pier Paolo Pasolini in this deeply reflective biopic starring Willem Dafoe. The year is 1975. The fiercely political Pasolini (Dafoe) is in the process of defending his latest film ‘Salo, 120 Days of Sodom’ from the censors when he returns home to his mother’s house in Rome, and prepares to discuss his career in a candid interview. In the midst of all of this, inspiration strikes, and Pasolini begins making preparations for his next film. Meanwhile, the director takes a handsome young hustler to a local beach for a late night tryst, never sensing the danger that dwells out there in the darkness until it’s already too late. Dafoe plays Pasolini with the quiet dignity of an aristocrat straight out of some lost Visconti epic. (Some subtitles) France/Belgium/Italy 2014 Abel Ferrara 84m

Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini tells four of the Chaucer tales in this graphic and satirical picture that chronicles the 14th-century’s social, sexual, and religious standards in England. The four episodes are: ‘The Friar’s tale’, The Pardoner’s Tale’, ‘The Wife of Bath’s Tale’ and ‘The Summoner’s Tale’. ‘The Canterbury Tales’ is the second film in Pasolini’s ‘Trilogy of Life’ (a trilogy of antique eroticism), this film follows ‘The Decameron’ and precedes ‘The Arabian Nights’, but in contrast to the Italy of Pasolini’s Decameron, the England of ‘The Canterbury Tales’ is much more harsh in its treatment of vice of all kinds. Many climbers, including a number of large teams as well as some small partnerships, were high on Everest during the storm, and while climbers died on both the North Face and South Col approaches, we follow the events on the south face. With a screenplay by William Nicholson (‘Gladiator’, ‘Mandela’) and Simon Beaufoy (‘Slumdog Millionaire’, ‘127 Hours’), and frontline stars such as Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley, Sam Worthington, Robin Wright and Josh Brolin, this has quality written all over it. My Mother Mia Madre Nanni Moretti shares with us his reflections about the recent loss of his mother, frequently mentioned, and once, even featured in his works. The story is about a director (Margherita) making a film focused on the loss of Italian jobs after a USA takeover (John Turturro as an American star that fluffs all of his lines brings humour to the situation). Margherita is in denial about the imminence of her parent’s demise, but is kept informed by her brother Giovanni (Moretti), who’s so preoccupied by the prospect of losing his mother that he’s taken a couple of months leave from his job. Giulia Lazzarini portrays the sick mother with sensibility and measure: a really moving performance. Moretti’s finest film since ‘The Son’s Room’. (Subtitles) Italy/France 2015 Nanni Moretti 103m

Amy A documentary on the late singer/songwriter, who died in 2011 after a short yet unforgettable career. Despite just two albums to her name Amy Winehouse is one of the biggest music icons in British history. With a voice oft described as a combination of Billy Holiday, Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan, Amy Winehouse was a pop star with soul; a once in two generational musical talent whose appeal crossed cultural and demographic boundaries. But while her music made her a star, her chaotic personal life stole headlines. Stunningly moving and powerful: intimate, passionate, often shocking, and mesmerically absorbing. Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard excel in Justin Kurzel’s thrillingly savage interpretation of the Scottish Play. ‘Macbeth’ is the story of a fearless warrior and inspiring leader brought low by ambition and desire. A thrilling interpretation of the dramatic realities of the times and a reimagining of what wartime must have been like for one of literature’s most famous and compelling characters, a story of all-consuming passion and ambition set in war torn Scotland. This is not the traditional stage ‘Macbeth’, crammed into claustrophobic interior spaces, here, the Highlands are recast as a glowing outback in an extremely stylish and inspired new version. Kurzel’s chilling debut feature, the 2011 true-crime thriller ‘Snowtown’, suggested the then-37year-old Australian was a talent to watch. But this towering, consistently ingenious film establishes him as a director to cherish. UK/Fra/USA 2015 Justin Kurzel 113m

Twice a year the Italian city of Siena goes crazy for the oldest horse race in the world: the Palio. Strategy, bribery and corruption play as much a part as the skill of the riders. Loved and loathed by the districts they represent, the jockeys forge alliances and make deals promising large cash sums to try and get the best start. Legendary rider Gigi Bruschelli has won 13 Palios in 16 years and is accused by his critics of paying off younger jockeys and fixing the race with average horses. One jockey stands in his way, his former trainee, a handsome young Sardinian, Giovanni Atzeni, who is quietly determined to challenge his old mentor. Less interested in bribes and collusion, he rides for the love of the race. Their passionate and dramatic battle is an epic and cinematic tale of Italian life in microcosm. Trudno byt Bogom When legendary Russian auteur Aleksey German died in 2013, he left behind this extraordinary final film, a phantasmagorical adaptation of the revered sci-fi novel by the Strugatskiy brothers. ‘Hard to be a God’ began percolating in German’s consciousness in the mid-1960s, and would actively consume him for the last 15 years of his life. Happily, he brought the film close enough to completion for his wife and son to apply the finishing touches immediately after his passing. Taking place on the planet Arkanar, which is in the midst of its own Middle Ages, the film focuses on Don Rumata, one of a group of earth scientists who have been sent to Arkanar with the proviso that they must not interfere in the planet’s political or historical development. Carey Mulligan, Helena Bonham Carter and Meryl Streep lead the cast of a powerful drama about the women who were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality. The stirring story centres on Maud Watts (Mulligan), a working wife and mother whose life is forever changed when she is secretly recruited to join the U.K.’s growing suffragette movement. Galvanized by the outlaw fugitive Emmeline Pankhurst (Streep), Maud becomes an activist for the cause alongside women from all walks of life. When increasingly aggressive police action forces Maud and her dedicated fellow suffragettes underground, they engage in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with the authorities, who are shocked as the women’s civil disobedience escalates and sparks debate across the nation. Inspired by true events, this is a moving drama exploring the passion and heartbreak of those who risked all they had for women’s right to vote - their jobs, their homes, their children, and even their lives. Two passionate journalists discover a devastating scandal during their in-depth exploration of the sport they adore. In the twenty-first century, sport and corruption are inseparable. In the wake of revelations about wrongdoings at FIFA, this heartfelt doc about cronyism and racketeering in the world of cricket feels particularly timely. Sports journalists Sam Collins and Jarrod Kimber – who co-direct and present – view the decline of test cricket as symbolic of the death of fair play in sport, and indeed the wider world. (You could argue that’s a dubious argument given cricket’s colonialist history.) But when they get into the unfolding scandals spreading from India to affect the game at large, their film is compelling, even for non-fans. A must for lovers of Cricket. UK 2015 S. Collins / J. Horse Money Cavalo Dinheiro A visionary masterwork from the renowned Portuguese director Pedro Costa. ‘Horse Money’ is a mesmerizing odyssey into the real, imagined and nightmarish memories of the elderly Ventura, a Cape Verdean immigrant living in Lisbon. The time is now, a numbing and timeless present of hospital stays, bureaucratic questioning, and wandering through remembered spaces... and suddenly it is also then, the mid ‘70s and the time of Portugal’s ‘Carnation Revolution’, when Ventura got into a knife fight with his friend Joaquim. This is a moving memorialization of lives in danger of being forgotten, as well as a piercingly beautiful work of modern cinema. Costa’s style is elliptical and serene, and those who stay focused will witness moments of haunting beauty and a humble sort of grace. (Subtitles) Portugal 2014 Pedro Costa 103m
