Chichester Cinema Great News! With the Minerva Theatre now fully refurbished, we can resume our ‘A Mind For Movies’ Film Quiz after a one year sabbatical. This is perhaps the most fun event on the New Park Cinema calendar, and doubles up as a fundraiser for the Cinema – this year, all profits will go towards the new cinema seating planned for the summer. I will be joined by WEA film lecturer Richard Cupidi to host the event, made up of multiple-choice questions of varying difficulties (novice to film-buff), which are projected on to a screen, accompanied by images, video, audio and more. Teams of six fight (or is it giggle?) it out for the quiz trophy. See pg22 for details. This season kicks off with Martin Scorsese’s epic new film ‘Silence’, so we have taken the opportunity to screen three of his undisputed masterpieces, remastered, and on the big screen. Look out for ‘Taxi Driver’, Raging Bull’ and ‘Goodfellas’ as you have never seen them before. We are proud to bring to you two very special presentations this season: ‘Holocaust Day’ on the very first day of the season sees a mixture of films and talks about the harrowing events of WW2; whilst ‘Screening Diversity’ sees a mixture of four films and three courses on minorities, highlighted by the screening of ‘Victim’ (plus Q&A with actor Peter McEnery & Dirk Bogarde biographer John Coldstream), and the visit of Brian Robinson from the BFI. In this monumental film – Martin Scorsese’s 24th in half a century – silence is the sound of the voice of God. The film tells the story of two Christian missionaries, Fathers Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Garrpe (Adam Driver), who face the ultimate test of faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor Father Ferreira (Liam Neeson) - at a time when Christianity was outlawed and their presence forbidden. When word reaches them that Ferreira has not only renounced his faith, but gone wholly native (Colonel Kurtz style), the two young men set out to find him so his honour can be restored. Garfield and Driver couldn’t imaginably be better – or better cast. Grace may be the toughest of all spiritual conditions to capture on film: it’s why so few directors even attempt it. Scorsese, who spent a year in a seminary before making movies, has never shied away from matters religious – themes of guilt and redemption run through everything from ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ to ‘Taxi Driver’ – but ‘Silence’ seems to bring it all into perspective. To mark Holocaust Memorial Day - Friday 27th January 2017 members of Chichester City Council have organised a programme running from 16:00 to 20:00 that day entitled ‘Conspiracies - the Evil & the Good.’ It consists of two films and related discussion panels, taking place in the main New Park Cinema, accompanied by a display and ‘meet the author’ opportunity in the adjacent Studio.

Fri 27 Jan 16:00 – 20:00 (Maximum 2 people per booking) Conspiracy will be screened free of charge. Donations will be collected at the end of the day (suggested £20 per person) for the other events, with all surplus going to Save the Children.

Conspiracy Based on the only surviving record of the infamous January 1942 Wannsee Conference, the BBC/HBO-produced ‘Conspiracy’ reconstructs the two-hour meeting during which leading members of the SS and the Nazi government made definitive plans for the genocide of Europe’s Jews. Sixteen men sit around a table and politely discuss the mechanics and ramifications of murdering millions. As SS General Reinhard Heydrich, overall architect of the Final Solution, Kenneth Branagh is brilliant, charming, manipulative and threatening, a cultured man seemingly without a soul. As his aid, SS Colonel Adolf Eichmann, Stanley Tucci is the incarnation of the banality of evil. Colin Firth is a powerful foil for Branagh as Dr Wilhelm Stuckart, author of Nazi Germany’s race laws and a stickler for the rule of law, no matter how insane the law may have become; while David Threlfall makes a striking impression as the one man who comes closest to taking a moral stand, Dr Wilhelm Kritzinger. Conspiracy - Panel Discussion The Panel Discussion following the film will be chaired by District and City Councillor Clare Apel. Clare is the daughter of a Viennese Jewish father. He lost all of his close relatives in the Holocaust apart from two cousins. Clare chaired the committee which organised the performance of ‘Last Train to Tomorrow’ by the composer Carl Davis and the Chichester University Orchestra in the Cathedral on 27th January 2016. Meet the Author Peter Grose A Good Place to Hide In sharp contrast a ‘conspiracy’ of a very different sort was taking place in the early 1940’s in the Massif Central, France. Mainly Protestant families on the remote Plateau Vivarais-Lignon, inspired by Pastor André Trocmé of Le Chambon- sur- Lignon, hid thousands of Jewish and other refugee children in villages and farms throughout WW2. Vichy officials and occupying German soldiers knew what was happening did nothing to prevent it a ‘conspiracy of goodness’. Trocmé’s and the Plateau’s story is brilliantly told in Peter Grose’s recent book ‘A Good Place to Hide’. Now living in France, Peter began his career as a journalist in Sydney, Australia. In 1980 he joined London publishers Secker & Warburg, as Publishing and then Managing Director. He has written three bestselling books including ‘A Good Place to Hide’. Peter Grose will be present in The Studio during the interval.

Sermon Reading by Reverend Canon Dr Anthony Cane Back in the Cinema, he will then introduce the Reverend Canon Dr Anthony Cane, Chancellor of Chichester Cathedral who will read Pastor Trocmé’s famous 1940 post-Armistice Sermon.

Documentary: Conspiracy of Goodness This will be followed by the documentary ‘Conspiracy of Goodness’ (2012 - 30m), about Le Chambon and the Plateau during WW2. This short film by Martyn Cox is narrated by the Le Chambon historian Gérard Bollon and is in French with English subtitles. Martyn Cox has filmed oral history interviews with more than a hundred WW2 veterans who’d taken part in secret operations in support of wartime Resistance or been Resisters themselves. He’s an Advisory Board member for the development of the University of Sussex Centre for Resistance Studies. Martyn regularly advises the media and was the instigator and Associate Producer of the Channel 4 documentary “The Real Charlotte Grays”. He’s the co-founder of the educational charity The Secret WW2 Learning Network

Panel Discussion The second Panel Discussion will be chaired by City Councillor Martyn Bell. As a student in Lyon in the early 1960’s, Martyn was a regular visitor to the Vivarais Plateau and has known several of the ‘hidden children’.

The Dreamed Ones Die Geträumten A tormented love affair between two celebrated writers inspired this intimate literary docudrama. A literary love affair rising from the ruins of post-war Europe, the troubled relationship between Paul Celan (Laurence Rupp) and Ingeborg Bachmann (Anja Plaschg) was born in the shadow of the Holocaust, and arguably never quite escaped it. A Romanian-born Jewish poet, Celan lost both his parents in the Nazi genocide. Bachmann, an Austrian poet and dramatist, was the daughter of a devoted Nazi. Working with actors for the first time, veteran Austrian documentary maker Ruth Beckermann, herself the daughter of Jewish Holocaust survivors, brings this fatal attraction to life. In 1961 a British film challenged the prevailing view on homosexuality and helped to change the law, as recommended four years earlier in the report of the committee chaired by Lord Wolfenden. That film was ‘Victim’, starring Dirk Bogarde and Sylvia Syms. In early 1960s London, barrister Melville Farr (Dirk Bogarde) is on the path to success. With his practice winning cases and a loving marriage to his wife (Sylvia Sims), Farr’s career and personal life are nearly idyllic. However, when blackmailers link Farr to a young gay man (Peter McEnery), everything Farr has worked for is threatened. As it turns out, Farr is a closeted homosexual - which is problematic, due to Britain’s anti-sodomy laws. But instead of giving in, Farr decides to fight. To mark the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act and the 60th of the report itself - this screening of ‘Victim’ will be introduced by John Coldstream, Dirk Bogarde’s official biographer. In the English legal system, the burden of proof is on the accused, therefore it was up to Lipstadt (Rachel Weisz) and her legal team to prove the essential truth that the Holocaust occurred. ‘Loving’ celebrates the real-life courage and commitment of an interracial couple, Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred Loving (Ruth Negga), who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their hometown. Richard was Caucasian and Mildred was African-American, and interracial marriage was illegal in Virginia in 1958. She completely immerses herself in the role of Christine Chubbuck in this stark retelling of the story that led to the television news reporter’s suicide live on air, aged 29, in 1974. From the outset we see Chubbuck as an extreme perfectionist with a relentless drive to succeed in the male-dominated business. It is also apparent that she lacks the requisite on-camera appeal that her job calls for: interviewing subjects, she comes across as sedate and cold. The McDonald brothers, Dick (Nick Offerman) and Maurice, aka Mac (John Carroll Lynch), have established a hugely popular hamburger restaurant in 1950s southern California based on the principle of speed and quality. Their streamlined production of burgers and fries means that no customer has to wait for their food, and they show milkshake machine salesman Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton) around their kitchens with pride. Kroc was impressed by the brothers’ system and manouvered himself into a position to be able to pull the company from the brothers and create a billion-dollar empire. Keaton is superb in this role, convincingly repulsive as the conscience-free go-getter who thinks nothing of betraying his professional and personal relationships to get to the top. In 1961 a British film challenged the prevailing view on homosexuality and helped to change the law, as recommended four years earlier in the report of the committee chaired by Lord Wolfenden. That film was ‘Victim’, starring Dirk Bogarde and Sylvia Syms. To mark the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act - and the 60th of the report itself - a screening of ‘Victim’ (pg20) on Sat Feb 11 will be introduced by John Coldstream, Dirk Bogarde’s official biographer. A Q&A with Peter McEnery, who played Boy Barrett in the film, will follow. And that’s not all! In subsequent weeks we will screen three other films: ‘Sapphire’ (pg20), ‘The Children’s Hour’ (pg26) and ‘The L-Shaped Room’ (pg32); host a day-course (below) with lead speaker Brian Robinson (BFI) looking at the links between film, censorship and public opinion in the early ‘60s; plus two more courses on Women in Cinema (pg42).

Cinema, Censorship and Public Opinion in the 1960s Brian Robinson (BFI) will lead us through a day-course looking at the links between film, censorship and public opinion in the early ‘60s. The course will look at the twilight world of the homosexual, from Oscar Wilde to Wolfenden – giving voice to the once unmentionable. The session makes use of an array of clips from films that examined the controversial topic and shows the difficulties encountered during the production of ‘Victim’ via letters between the censor and its writes & producers. Reaction to the film is also given through accounts taken from gay men who saw ‘Victim’ on its release and tell how it and other such films affected their lives.

Women in Hollywood From Kitchen to Boardroom: How Women’s changing place in society was reflected in films of the day. The position of women in American society experienced dramatic changes in the Depression decade of the 1930s, and then again during and immediately after the Second World War. After a period of relative calm, the feminist movement of the 1970s led to seismic changes in the way in which women participate in American economic, political and social life. How did Hollywood cinema react to these developments? What sort of roles did it propose for the American woman during these times of profound social change? Nick Smedley, an expert in the history of Hollywood cinema, who has written about the portrayal of women in American cinema from 1930 to the present day, navigates us through the complex reactions in Hollywood during these challenging times. Nick will bring out many surprising developments in this period, illustrated copiously with clips from the Golden Age to the modern day. Seriously Funny Woody Allen Course

A two session film course, over 2 weeks on the American living legend, Woody Allen. Woody Allen is a unique American filmmaker. Prolific (averaging one film release a year), controversial, celebrated and reviled, Allen is never far from the box office or the headlines. Love him or hate him, his features still attract world class actors, cinematographers and collaborators. This course takes us through Woody Allen’s entire filmmaking career and delves into the what have become known as the “early funny films” and the “later serious films”. We will explore his American classics (Annie Hall, Manhattan, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Blue Jasmine) and his recent Europe-set features (Midnight in Paris, Cassandra’s Dream, Match Point), whilst looking at how his work is received, financed and reviewed. Gareth Evans is Head of Media Studies at Bishop Luffa School. He has studied Woody Allen’s work at Master’s degree level and is a film and film education journalist.
