Scorsese Season
Follow us
welcome to
Chichester Cinema Great News! With the Minerva Theatre now fully refurbished, we can resume our ‘A Mind For Movies’ Film Quiz after a one year sabbatical. This is perhaps the most fun event on the New Park Cinema calendar, and doubles up as a fundraiser for the Cinema – this year, all profits will go towards the new cinema seating planned for the summer. I will be joined by WEA film lecturer Richard Cupidi to host the event, made up of multiple-choice questions of varying difficulties (novice to film-buff), which are projected on to a screen, accompanied by images, video, audio and more. Teams of six fight (or is it giggle?) it out for the quiz trophy. See pg22 for details. This season kicks off with Martin Scorsese’s epic new film ‘Silence’, so we have taken the opportunity to screen three of his undisputed masterpieces, remastered, and on the big screen. Look out for ‘Taxi Driver’, Raging Bull’ and ‘Goodfellas’ as you have never seen them before. We are proud to bring to you two very special presentations this season: ‘Holocaust Day’ on the very first day of the season sees a mixture of films and talks about the harrowing events of WW2; whilst ‘Screening Diversity’ sees a mixture of four films and three courses on minorities, highlighted by the screening of ‘Victim’ (plus Q&A with actor Peter McEnery & Dirk Bogarde biographer John Coldstream), and the visit of Brian Robinson from the BFI. See you at the Cinema

In this monumental film – Martin Scorsese’s 24th in half a century – silence is the sound of the voice of God. The film tells the story of two Christian missionaries, Fathers Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Garrpe (Adam Driver), who face the ultimate test of faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor Father Ferreira (Liam Neeson) - at a time when Christianity was outlawed and their presence forbidden. When word reaches them that Ferreira has not only renounced his faith, but gone wholly native (Colonel Kurtz style), the two young men set out to find him so his honour can be restored. Garfield and Driver couldn’t imaginably be better – or better cast. Grace may be the toughest of all spiritual conditions to capture on film: it’s why so few directors even attempt it. Scorsese, who spent a year in a seminary before making movies, has never shied away from matters religious – themes of guilt and redemption run through everything from ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ to ‘Taxi Driver’ – but ‘Silence’ seems to bring it all into perspective. It’s the kind of work a great filmmaker can only pull off with a lifetime’s accrued expertise behind him. USA 2016 Martin Scorsese 159m Martin Scorsese: Masterpieces ‘Silence’ is the first of four films we screen this season by Director Martin Scorsese - widely regarded as one of the most significant and influential filmmakers in cinema history. We are pleased to present for you on the big screen:

Il Trovatore This is one of the great operas of the Romantic period, a story of passion and blood, love and vengeance, disaster and murder. It is a Verdi classic! This atmospheric and poetic staging by director David Bösch puts the story of passion against the backdrop of war. Fire and snow in the landscape echo the cruelty and love of the story: soldiers and gypsies clash, a mother reveals a terrible secret and two men are engaged in a deadly fight for one woman. The famous Anvil Chorus is just one of the highlights of Verdi’s exceptionally fine music. Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Anita Rachvelishvili, Lianna Haroutounian and Gregory Kunde lead a superb cast of world-class singers. (Sung in Italian with English subtitles) Offices ininterval. To mark Holocaust Memorial Day - Friday 27th January 2017 members of Chichester City Council have organised a programme running from 16:00 to 20:00 that day entitled ‘Conspiracies - the Evil & the Good.’ It consists of two films and related discussion panels, taking place in the main New Park Cinema, accompanied by a display and ‘meet the author’ opportunity in the adjacent Studio.
Fri 27 Jan 16:00 – 20:00 (Maximum 2 people per booking) Conspiracy will be screened free of charge. Donations will be collected at the end of the day (suggested £20 per person) for the other events, with all surplus going to Save the Children.
Conspiracy Based on the only surviving record of the infamous January 1942 Wannsee Conference, the BBC/HBO-produced ‘Conspiracy’ reconstructs the two-hour meeting during which leading members of the SS and the Nazi government made definitive plans for the genocide of Europe’s Jews. Sixteen men sit around a table and politely discuss the mechanics and ramifications of murdering millions. As SS General Reinhard Heydrich, overall architect of the Final Solution, Kenneth Branagh is brilliant, charming, manipulative and threatening, a cultured man seemingly without a soul. As his aid, SS Colonel Adolf Eichmann, Stanley Tucci is the incarnation of the banality of evil. Colin Firth is a powerful foil for Branagh as Dr Wilhelm Stuckart, author of Nazi Germany’s race laws and a stickler for the rule of law, no matter how insane the law may have become; while David Threlfall makes a striking impression as the one man who comes closest to taking a moral stand, Dr Wilhelm Kritzinger. UK 2001 BBC/HBO Frank Pierson 92 m
Conspiracy - Panel Discussion The Panel Discussion following the film will be chaired by District and City Councillor Clare Apel. Clare is the daughter of a Viennese Jewish father. He lost all of his close relatives in the Holocaust apart from two cousins. Clare chaired the committee which organised the performance of ‘Last Train to Tomorrow’ by the composer Carl Davis and the Chichester University Orchestra in the Cathedral on 27th January 2016. Meet the Author Peter Grose A Good Place to Hide In sharp contrast a ‘conspiracy’ of a very different sort was taking place in the early 1940’s in the Massif Central, France. Mainly Protestant families on the remote Plateau Vivarais-Lignon, inspired by Pastor André Trocmé of Le Chambon- sur- Lignon, hid thousands of Jewish and other refugee children in villages and farms throughout WW2. Vichy officials and occupying German soldiers knew what was happening did nothing to prevent it a ‘conspiracy of goodness’. Trocmé’s and the Plateau’s story is brilliantly told in Peter Grose’s recent book ‘A Good Place to Hide’. Now living in France, Peter began his career as a journalist in Sydney, Australia. In 1980 he joined London publishers Secker & Warburg, as Publishing and then Managing Director. He has written three bestselling books including ‘A Good Place to Hide’. Peter Grose will be present in The Studio during the interval.
Sermon Reading by Reverend Canon Dr Anthony Cane Back in the Cinema, he will then introduce the Reverend Canon Dr Anthony Cane, Chancellor of Chichester Cathedral who will read Pastor Trocmé’s famous 1940 post-Armistice Sermon.
Documentary: Conspiracy of Goodness This will be followed by the documentary ‘Conspiracy of Goodness’ (2012 - 30m), about Le Chambon and the Plateau during WW2. This short film by Martyn Cox is narrated by the Le Chambon historian Gérard Bollon and is in French with English subtitles. Martyn Cox has filmed oral history interviews with more than a hundred WW2 veterans who’d taken part in secret operations in support of wartime Resistance or been Resisters themselves. He’s an Advisory Board member for the development of the University of Sussex Centre for Resistance Studies. Martyn regularly advises the media and was the instigator and Associate Producer of the Channel 4 documentary “The Real Charlotte Grays”. He’s the co-founder of the educational charity The Secret WW2 Learning Network
Panel Discussion The second Panel Discussion will be chaired by City Councillor Martyn Bell. As a student in Lyon in the early 1960’s, Martyn was a regular visitor to the Vivarais Plateau and has known several of the ‘hidden children’.

Critics’ favourite and nominated for the Best Film Golden Globe – this was a highlight of 2016. Texas brothers Toby (Chris Pine), and Tanner (Ben Foster), come together after years divided to rob branches of the bank threatening to foreclose on their family land. Pine and Bridges are stand outs in a film directed by David Mackenzie (‘Starred Up’), and with a screenplay by Taylor Sheridan, who continues his hot streak after ‘Sicario’. The Dreamed Ones Die Geträumten A tormented love affair between two celebrated writers inspired this intimate literary docudrama. A literary love affair rising from the ruins of post-war Europe, the troubled relationship between Paul Celan (Laurence Rupp) and Ingeborg Bachmann (Anja Plaschg) was born in the shadow of the Holocaust, and arguably never quite escaped it. A Romanian-born Jewish poet, Celan lost both his parents in the Nazi genocide. Bachmann, an Austrian poet and dramatist, was the daughter of a devoted Nazi. Working with actors for the first time, veteran Austrian documentary maker Ruth Beckermann, herself the daughter of Jewish Holocaust survivors, brings this fatal attraction to life. Connoisseurs of doomed romance will savour every angst-heavy line, ideally while wearing all-black clothes and chainsmoking high-tar cigarettes. (Subtitles) Austria 2016 Ruth Beckermann 89m

Relève A gorgeously shot documentary focusing on Benjamin Millepied’s 2015 efforts to stage his first show, “Clear, Loud, Bright, Forward,” as the Paris Opera Ballet’s new dance director. On the strength of his tenure as a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet (as well as his contributions to Darren Aronofsky’s ‘Black Swan’, whose star, Natalie Portman, he married in 2012), Millepied was hired to take over the reigns of the Paris Opera Ballet. It’s an illustrious, nerve-wracking job, and one for which Millepied is immediately up to the task. Directors Thierry Demaizière and Alban Teurlai don’t lack for access, as their documentary takes up intimate residence alongside its subject as he choreographs, plans and oversees rehearsals for his maiden production. Amadeus Lucian Msamati (‘Luther’, ‘Game of Thrones’) plays Salieri in Peter Shaffer’s iconic play, broadcast live from the National Theatre, and with live orchestral accompaniment by Southbank Sinfonia. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, a rowdy young prodigy, arrives in Vienna, the music capital of the world – and he’s determined to make a splash. Awestruck by his genius, court composer Antonio Salieri has the power to promote his talent or destroy his name. Jackie
Following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy fights through grief and trauma to regain her faith, console her children, and define her husband’s historic legacy. The iconic first lady is given emotional complexity and rich understanding through a stirring and ambitious performance by Natalie Portman in director Pablo Larraín’s powerful film. It’s less a biopic than an experimental character study - an effective one - looking at Jackie’s private life in the traumatic days following her husband’s assassination. ‘Jackie’ finds humanity in the pomp and splendour, and a deep empathy for those who must always live in the public eye and are not even allowed to mourn in their own way. There is real grace, sorrow, and beauty to this rich and rewarding cinematic experience. USA/Chile/France 2016 Pablo Larraín 99m

Manchester by the Sea This strong Oscar contender tells the life of a solitary Boston janitor who is transformed when he returns to his hometown to take care of his teenage nephew. The story of the Chandlers, a working-class family living in a Massachusetts fishing village for generations, Manchester by the Sea is a deeply poignant, unexpectedly funny exploration of the power of familial love, community, sacrifice and hope. After the death of his older brother Joe (Kyle Chandler), Lee Chandler (Casey Affleck) is shocked to learn that Joe has made him sole guardian of his nephew Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Taking leave of his job, Lee reluctantly returns to care for the spirited 16-year-old, and is forced to deal with a past that separated him from his wife Randi (Michelle Williams) and the community where he was born and raised. Irreplaceable Médecin de Campagne When a rural Doctor falls sick, a novice comes from the hospital to assist him. But will she manage to adapt to this new life and to replace the man who thought he was... irreplaceable? All of the inhabitants in this corner of the countryside can count on Jean-Pierre (François Cluzet from ‘Untouchable’), the doctor who cares for them and who reassures them day and night, seven days a week. Nathalie (Marianne Denicourt) is sent to help, but can the polar opposite to Jean-Pierre (she has just finished her degree despite being in her forties) fit in to this alien world? This is a drama that reminds us that commitment to others must overcome our own ego and that happiness can be found beyond the borders of a bustling city that can devour those with the best of intentions. The extraordinary true story of Desmond Doss who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. Doss (Andrew Garfield) was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon, as he believed that while the war was justified, killing was nevertheless wrong. As an army medic, he single-handedly evacuated the wounded from behind enemy lines, braved fire while tending to soldiers and was wounded by a grenade and hit by snipers. Doss was the first conscientious objector to ever earn the Congressional Medal of Honour. Before Sunrise Jess (Ethan Hawke), an American traveling through Europe, meets the French beauty Celine (Julie Delpy) on a train, in an intelligent and very romantic modern classic. Richard Linklater wrote and directed this charming film concerning two young people who meet briefly on a train travelling through Europe who enjoy talking to each other so much that they decide to spend a few hours together until they depart for different destinations. Linklater, in the style of Eric Rohmer and Jacques Rivette, assumes intelligence on both the part of his audience, and his characters. Hawke and Delpy keep the clever romantic tone not only afloat but mesmerizing. So natural are their performances that it seems impossible not to believe they truly are soulmates who are locked in a doomed, all-too-short affair. USA 1995 Richard Linklater 101m

Victim
In 1961 a British film challenged the prevailing view on homosexuality and helped to change the law, as recommended four years earlier in the report of the committee chaired by Lord Wolfenden. That film was ‘Victim’, starring Dirk Bogarde and Sylvia Syms. In early 1960s London, barrister Melville Farr (Dirk Bogarde) is on the path to success. With his practice winning cases and a loving marriage to his wife (Sylvia Sims), Farr’s career and personal life are nearly idyllic. However, when blackmailers link Farr to a young gay man (Peter McEnery), everything Farr has worked for is threatened. As it turns out, Farr is a closeted homosexual - which is problematic, due to Britain’s anti-sodomy laws. But instead of giving in, Farr decides to fight. To mark the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act and the 60th of the report itself - this screening of ‘Victim’ will be introduced by John Coldstream, Dirk Bogarde’s official biographer. A Q&A with Peter McEnery, who played Boy Barrett in the film, will follow. UK 1961 Basil Dearden 90m + Q&A

Acclaimed writer and historian Deborah E. Lipstadt must battle for historical truth to prove the Holocaust actually occurred when David Irving, a renowned denier, sues her for libel. In the English legal system, the burden of proof is on the accused, therefore it was up to Lipstadt (Rachel Weisz) and her legal team to prove the essential truth that the Holocaust occurred. This is a movie about what ensued when Lipstadt and her publisher, Penguin Books, refused to settle out of court. Settlement was a course of action that would have revolted the feisty Lipstadt but which many counselled because it would have deprived Irving (Timothy Spall) of a platform from which to expound his noxious theories. Celebrity solicitor Anthony Julius (Andrew Scott) was determined that Lipstadt would win in a trial that would still somehow manage to deny Irving the public hearing he so craved. The story of a young woman and her rebel band stealing plans for the Death Star perfectly captures that original-trilogy magic. Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones from ‘The Theory of Everything’), a Rebellion soldier and criminal, has watched the Empire corrupt her scientist father (Mads Mikkelsen), by forcing him to help build the ultimate lethal weapon – the Death Star. Jyn’s mission impossible is to steal the plans for the massive planet-destroyer and foil the villainous weapons director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn channelling Christoph Waltz). Taking place just before the events of the first released ‘Star Wars’ movie in 1977, this prequel has the same primitive, lived-in, emotional, loopy spirit that made us fall in love with the original trilogy. I, Claude Monet From award-winning director Phil Grabsky comes this fresh new look at arguably the world’s favourite artist - through his own words. Using letters and other private writings ‘I, Claude Monet’ reveals new insight into the man who not only painted the picture that gave birth to impressionism but who was perhaps the most influential and successful painter of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Despite this, and perhaps because of it, Monet’s life is a gripping tale about a man who, behind his sun-dazzled canvases, suffered from feelings of depression, loneliness, even suicide. Then, as his art developed and his love of gardening led to the glories of his garden at Giverney, his humour, insight and love of life is revealed. ‘Loving’ celebrates the real-life courage and commitment of an interracial couple, Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Mildred Loving (Ruth Negga), who married and then spent the next nine years fighting for the right to live as a family in their hometown. Richard was Caucasian and Mildred was African-American, and interracial marriage was illegal in Virginia in 1958. When they returned home after marrying in Washington DC, the judge offered a one-year suspended sentence if they’d leave the state, noting: “Almighty God placed races on separate continents and, but for the interference with His arrangement, there would be no cause for such marriages.” The film beautifully expresses the love they had for each other, the pain of the long court ordeal and the hardship of moving away from their families. The story of Christine Chubbuck, a 1970s TV reporter struggling with depression and professional frustrations as she tries to advance her career. Rebecca Hall’s (‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’) performance in ‘Christine’ is nothing less than mighty. She completely immerses herself in the role of Christine Chubbuck in this stark retelling of the story that led to the television news reporter’s suicide live on air, aged 29, in 1974. From the outset we see Chubbuck as an extreme perfectionist with a relentless drive to succeed in the male-dominated business. It is also apparent that she lacks the requisite on-camera appeal that her job calls for: interviewing subjects, she comes across as sedate and cold. As her producer implores her to do ‘juicier’ stories, the dark cloud hovering over Christine seems to loom larger. An empathetic and insightful film. UK/USA 2016 Antonio Campos 119m

The 2017 Golden Globe Winner for Best Film (Drama). The tender, heart-breaking story of a young man’s struggle to find himself, told across three defining chapters in his life as he experiences the ecstasy, pain, and beauty of falling in love, while grappling with his own sexuality. ‘Moonlight’ is essentially three short stories woven into a larger tapestry. Each features the same protagonist but at different times of his life: child, teenager, man. This film is indeed about the struggles and difficulties of a person embracing his culturally reviled sexuality, but the story is universal in scope and intent. It is about poverty, intolerance, the battle to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles, and love. This serious Oscar contender is exactly the kind of smart film that the Awards should be recognizing more often. USA 2016 Barry Jenkins 111m

A coming of age comedy-drama about three women, who explore love and freedom in late 1970s Southern California. It’s 1979, and everything is in flux. Ayatollah Khomeini assumes power in Iran; Margaret Thatcher becomes British Prime Minister; and Dorothea Fields (a never-better Annette Bening) invites a squad of firemen to a party… as her son Jamie points out, only she would do such a thing. Her one concern is if he will become a good man. She has tried to give him a father figure (Billy Crudup) without success, so asks two women (Elle Fanning & Greta Gerwig) to help guide the boy to adulthood. You may find yourself itching to dance along with the people onscreen as they cut loose to songs from the distant past or from their rapidly spinning present. USA 2016 Mike Mills 118m

A definite Oscar contender, this fascinating film digs into the beginnings of one of the largest companies in the world today. The McDonald brothers, Dick (Nick Offerman) and Maurice, aka Mac (John Carroll Lynch), have established a hugely popular hamburger restaurant in 1950s southern California based on the principle of speed and quality. Their streamlined production of burgers and fries means that no customer has to wait for their food, and they show milkshake machine salesman Ray Kroc (Michael Keaton) around their kitchens with pride. Kroc was impressed by the brothers’ system and manouvered himself into a position to be able to pull the company from the brothers and create a billion-dollar empire. Keaton is superb in this role, convincingly repulsive as the conscience-free go-getter who thinks nothing of betraying his professional and personal relationships to get to the top. The film’s title is ironic; Kroc later claimed to be the founder of the company that today still bears the names of its real founders. USA 2017 John Lee Hancock 115m

Taxi Driver A mentally unstable Vietnam War veteran works as a nighttime taxi driver in NY where decadence and sleaze feed his dark urges. Insomniac ex-Marine Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) works the nightshift. Chronically alone, he cannot connect with anyone, and becomes infatuated with a presidential campaign worker (Cybill Shepherd) who agrees to a date and then spurns Travis when he cluelessly takes her to a tasteless film. Jodie Foster and Harvey Keitel also co-star – but it is De Niro who is hypnotically watchable. Unmissable on the big screen. USA 1976 Martin Scorsese 113m

Raging Bull Robert De Niro plays Jake LaMotta, a former middleweight boxing champion, whose reputation for tenacity and success in the ring was offset by his troubled domestic life. This is the high-point of the Scorsese/De Niro partnership. De Niro plays the fanatically aggressive middleweight boxer who alienates everyone around him. Joe Pesci and Cathy Moriarty are superb as his brother and wife. The film’s editor, Thelma Schoonmaker, established the movie as a classic example of her art, and the monochrome cinematography is superb. Unmissable! USA 1980 Martin Scorsese 129m

Goodfellas Definitive Scorsese at his peak, and the film towards which all his subsequent films have been reaching. From the opening credits to Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta in a hard-hitting intro, hard-cutting to red-lit freeze frame, to the sound-bite (“As far back as I can remember I always wanted to be a gangster”), followed by Tony Bennett’s ‘Rags to Riches’, this movie announces its bold, swaggering intent from the start and never relents. Joe Pesci dominates the film with a fierce, unforgettable performance, and many critics see this as the best movie of theScorsese’s career. USA 1990 Martin Scorsese 146m

Two-time Academy Award winner Ang Lee brings his extraordinary vision to this story, based on the widely-acclaimed, bestselling novel. The film is told from the point of view of 19-year-old private Billy Lynn (Joe Alwyn) who, along with his fellow soldiers in Bravo Squad, becomes a hero after a harrowing Iraq battle and is brought home temporarily for a victory tour. Through flashbacks, culminating at the spectacular halftime show of the Thanksgiving Day football game, the film reveals what really happened to the squad - contrasting the realities of the war with America’s perceptions. The film also stars Kristen Stewart, Chris Tucker, Garrett Hedlund, Vin Diesel, and Steve Martin. Lee used new technology, shooting at an ultra-high frame rate for the first time in film history, to create an immersive digital experience helping him dramatize war in a way never seen before. Directed by Denzel Washington from a screenplay by August Wilson, adapted from Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Awardwinning play. Troy Maxson (Washington) is a garbage man by day and a Greek tragedy by night. Boisterous and hyper-talkative, his job renders him largely invisible to white society, but he’s impossible to miss at home, where his oversized personality fills every inch of the house he shares with Rose (Viola Davis), his stoic wife of 18 years. ‘Fences’ is a deeply affecting treatise on marriage, poverty and the struggles of sons to confront the long shadow of the man who brought them into this world. You can see why Denzel Washington picked this project: this is essentially a transfer of the 2010 Broadway revival which won him and co-star Viola Davis Tony awards, and which she is almost guaranteed to convert into Oscar gold come February. With extraordinary performances, this is as faithful an adaptation as you can imagine. USA 2017 Denzel Washington 138m National Theatre Encore

Manon Lescaut Live from Teatro Regio, Turin María José Siri and Gregory Kunde star as the ill-fated lovers in Puccini’s passionate adaptation of the classic novel about a freespirited country girl who becomes the toast of Paris and finds herself torn between true love and a life of luxury. The opera had its debut on the very same stage of the Teatro Regio Turino in 1893 and was Puccini’s first major triumph – a hit with critics and audiences alike, that revealed Puccini as an operatic composer on a par with Verdi. Puccini reveals his fascination with the destiny of a woman whose sensuality and boundless energy is shown by her passionate search for life’s pleasures. His sumptuous and rich score is characterised by youthful vitality and filled with glorious melodies to further enrich the story. Conductor: Gianandrea Noseda. Sung in Italian with English subtitles. Viceroy’s House The true story of Lord Mountbatten, when in 1947 he assumed the post of last Viceroy, charged with handing India back to its people. This drama charts the life inside Viceroy’s House, the sumptuous Delhi home of the British rulers of India, and the momentous political decisions that led to the Partition of India. For six months, iconic British statesmen Lord Mountbatten (Hugh Bonneville) assumed the post of last Viceroy, and had the responsibility of working out the details of Indian independence and simultaneous British withdrawal. Mountbatten lived upstairs together with his wife (Gillian Anderson) and daughter, downstairs lived their 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants. As the political elite took their seats upstairs to wrangle over the birth of independent India, conflict erupted throughout the House as a new India is broken apart into three countries (India, Pakistan and Bangladesh). The Artist’s Garden: American Impressionism Following the smash hit ‘Painting the Modern Garden: Monet to Matisse’ comes a new film based on the hugely popular exhibition ‘The Artist’s Garden: American Impressionism and the Garden Movement’ from the Florence Griswold Museum in Connecticut, widely considered a home of American impressionism. American impressionism took its lead from French artists like Renoir and Monet but followed its own path that over a thirty-year period reveals as much about America as a nation as it does about a muchloved artistic movement. The story of American impressionism is closely tied to a love of gardens and a desire to preserve nature in a rapidly urbanizing nation. Travelling to studios, gardens and treasured locations throughout the Eastern United States, UK and France, this mesmerising film is a feast for the eyes. 2017 Phil Grabsky 90m UK

In 1961 a British film challenged the prevailing view on homosexuality and helped to change the law, as recommended four years earlier in the report of the committee chaired by Lord Wolfenden. That film was ‘Victim’, starring Dirk Bogarde and Sylvia Syms. To mark the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act - and the 60th of the report itself - a screening of ‘Victim’ (pg20) on Sat Feb 11 will be introduced by John Coldstream, Dirk Bogarde’s official biographer. A Q&A with Peter McEnery, who played Boy Barrett in the film, will follow. And that’s not all! In subsequent weeks we will screen three other films: ‘Sapphire’ (pg20), ‘The Children’s Hour’ (pg26) and ‘The L-Shaped Room’ (pg32); host a day-course (below) with lead speaker Brian Robinson (BFI) looking at the links between film, censorship and public opinion in the early ‘60s; plus two more courses on Women in Cinema (pg42).

Cinema, Censorship and Public Opinion in the 1960s Brian Robinson (BFI) will lead us through a day-course looking at the links between film, censorship and public opinion in the early ‘60s. The course will look at the twilight world of the homosexual, from Oscar Wilde to Wolfenden – giving voice to the once unmentionable. The session makes use of an array of clips from films that examined the controversial topic and shows the difficulties encountered during the production of ‘Victim’ via letters between the censor and its writes & producers. Reaction to the film is also given through accounts taken from gay men who saw ‘Victim’ on its release and tell how it and other such films affected their lives.

Women in Hollywood From Kitchen to Boardroom: How Women’s changing place in society was reflected in films of the day. The position of women in American society experienced dramatic changes in the Depression decade of the 1930s, and then again during and immediately after the Second World War. After a period of relative calm, the feminist movement of the 1970s led to seismic changes in the way in which women participate in American economic, political and social life. How did Hollywood cinema react to these developments? What sort of roles did it propose for the American woman during these times of profound social change? Nick Smedley, an expert in the history of Hollywood cinema, who has written about the portrayal of women in American cinema from 1930 to the present day, navigates us through the complex reactions in Hollywood during these challenging times. Nick will bring out many surprising developments in this period, illustrated copiously with clips from the Golden Age to the modern day. This is an interactive day course, with short talks, discussion groups, Q&A and maybe even a quick film quiz. Don’t miss it!’
