Chichester Cinema We are delighted to bring you this exciting Awards Season Programme – a season always filled with some of the strongest contenders of the year.

With the BAFTAs (Feb 18) and Oscars (Mar 4) just around the corner, we present some of the frontrunners: ‘Three Billboards’, with Frances McDormand, hot favourite for Best Actress; Sally Hawkins (Shape of Water) and Saoirse Ronan (Lady Bird). Other favourites include ‘Phantom Thread’ (Daniel Day-Lewis in his last role), ‘Call Me By Your Name’ and ‘I, Tonya’.

Also, don’t miss the ‘Mind for Movies’ Film Quiz held at the Minerva; the four Q&A’s led by guests such as Director Tony Britten (Through Lotte’s Lens) and World Quizzing Champion Kevin Ashman (The Man With the Iron Heart); plus a unique collaboration with the Chichester Festival Theatre, to include a BackStage Tour at the CFT followed by the 1999 version of ‘The Winslow Boy’.

The Mercy

Subtitled Screenings for the Hard of Hearing I thank you for the wonderful support of our upcoming subtitled screenings for the hard of hearing. Every email received gave me hope that we will continue the initiative after this trial.

Films will be in the English language, with English subtitles added. Even though the subtitles are designed for hard of hearing, anyone is welcome to these screenings. Many patrons without hearing difficulties have commented on how subtitles will add to their enjoyment.

Subtitled screenings will be the first screening on a Monday, with the first three being ‘The Post’ (5 Feb), ‘Journey’s End’ (12 Feb) and ’Phantom Thread’ (19 Feb).

The following three (‘The Mercy’, The 15:17 to Paris’, and ‘Finding Your Feet’) are unconfirmed at the time of going to print – please check our website for details.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

We kick off the 2018 Awards Season with what may be the best film you will see all year! In this darkly comic drama, a mother personally challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter’s murder, when they fail to catch the culprit. Nominated for 9 BAFTAs! After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter’s murder case, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson), the town’s revered chief of police. When his secondin-command Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell), an immature mother’s boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing’s law enforcement is only exacerbated.

The performances all round are outstanding, but McDormand and Rockwell really do have a shot at top honours at this year’s Academy Awards. McDonagh’s (‘In Bruges’, ‘Seven Psychopaths’) film may be awkwardly titled, but it is brilliantly executed. It is wildly violent, brilliantly funny and deeply moving. And so very smart!

The film follows the taking of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III (Charlie Plummer) and the desperate attempt by his devoted mother Gail (Michelle Williams) to convince his billionaire grandfather (Christopher Plummer) to pay the ransom. When Getty Sr. refuses, Gail attempts to sway him as her son’s captors become increasingly volatile and brutal. With her son’s life in the balance, Gail and Getty’s advisor (Mark Wahlberg) become unlikely allies in the race against time that ultimately reveals the true and lasting value of love over money. Yes – this is the film that originally had Kevin Spacey as Getty Sr. but after sexual allegations against Spacey, Ridley Scott took the drastic step of reshooting all his scenes with Plummer in his place.

A German ‘Untouchable’ is how this film is being promoted. This true-facts-based comedy is a buddy movie about Saliya (Kostja Ullmann), a young man who is going blind, but with the help of close friends, disguises the fact when working at a top hotel in Munich. But when Saliya falls in love with Laura (Anna Maria Mühe), the elaborate deception he so carefully put together begins to fall apart. ‘Blind Date’ was a box-office hit in Germany, with close to 350,000 admissions in its first two weeks, and is brought back to New Park after our Premiere screening in the 2017 Chichester Film Festival. Bolshoi Ballet ‘Lady of the Camellias’ is a ballet by John Neumeier in 3 acts and a prologue, with music by Frédéric Chopin which is also the subject of Verdi’s ‘La Traviata’.

As he arrives in Paris for the first time, the young and naive Armand is utterly captivated after meeting the ravishing and most desirable courtesan Marguerite Gautier. Their encounter gives birth to a passionate yet doomed love. Alexandre Dumas fils’s novel comes to life on the Bolshoi stage, with prima Svetlana Zakharova as the ailing Marguerite seeking love and redemption from her life as a courtesan.

The Bolshoi brings choreographer John Neumeier’s work of rare beauty and tragic depth to new emotional heights, accompanied by Chopin’s romantic piano score. Jonathan Kent’s production for The Royal Opera captures the dangerous political turbulence of Rome in 1800. The Chief of Police, Scarpia – one of the most malevolent villains in opera – ruthlessly pursues and tortures enemies of the state. His dark, demonic music contrasts with the expansive melodies of the idealistic lovers, Tosca and Cavaradossi, who express their passion in sublime arias, including ‘Vissi d’arte’ and ‘E lucevan le stelle’. Cecil Beaton, the Oscar-winning set and costume designer of ‘My Fair Lady’ and ‘Gigi,’ emerges as a colourful and sometimes controversial personality in this comprehensive documentary.

The film opens with the famous Ascot sequence from ‘My Fair Lady’ – a panorama of stunning black-and-white costumes in Edwardian England, certainly one of the most striking musical sequences ever filmed. The documentary quickly reminds us that Beaton’s talents went beyond his memorable costumes. In a way he was frustrated by his own wide-ranging interests, but Beaton was too restless to specialize, and he succeeded as a photographer, a theatre and film designer and a gifted writer. There are telling interviews with photographer David Bailey, artist David Hockney and designer Isaac Mizrahi, as well as Beaton’s biographer Hugo Vickers. 1942: The Third Reich is at its peak. The Czech resistance in London decides to plan the most ambitious military operation of WWII: Anthropoid. Two young recruits are sent to Prague to assassinate the most ruthless Nazi leader – Reich-protector Reinhard Heydrich, Head of the SS, the Gestapo, and the architect of the “Final Solution”.

The first half of the film charts the unlikely ascent to power of Heydrich (Jason Clarke), a loser dismissed from the army who is initially egged on by his flag-waving, National-Socialism-loving wife. The second half catches up with the Czechoslovak Resistance fighters who plot Heydrich’s assassination. In their late twenties, Jozef Gabcik (Jack Reynor) and Jan Kubis (Jack O’Connell) are parachuted into the Czechoslovak countryside and make their way to Prague, where the Resistance hides the duo while they prepare their mission.

Set in a dugout in Aisne in 1918, it is the story of a group of British officers, led by the mentally disintegrating young officer Stanhope, variously awaiting their fate.

Sam Claflin is Captain Stanhope, the much-admired commanding officer of an infantry company waiting nervously for an expected German onslaught. They know they’re a sacrificial gesture, undermanned and under-equipped but ordered to “hold them up as long as you can”. Stanhope is on the brink of mental collapse, holding himself together with whisky but sticking it out because “it’s the only thing a decent man can do”. There have been several film and TV versions of RC Sherriff’s WW1 play since it’s London debut in 1928, but this new incarnation, shown at the 2017 London Film Festival, is testament to the lingering potency of the piece.

When I discovered the collection of celebrated photographer Lotte Meitner-Graf, it seemed like a wonderful door was opening on this project”. Lotte’s escape from Austria in 1938 mirrored many of her compatriots, and subsequent subjects. She settled in London and after the war opened a studio in Bond Street. This documentary attempts to ‘re-create’ that studio, and those that passed through it.

A documentary that explores the cultural revolution that occurred in 1960s England.

Loaded with great footage from the era and accompanied by superbly cleaned-up music tracks from the Kinks, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and many others, this love letter-as-documentary offers 85 minutes of good old fun. Director Batty divides the film into three parts, roughly corresponding to the awakening, the flourishing and the decline of 1960s pop culture. Alongside nods to historic markers like the Beatles performing at Liverpool’s Cavern Club are more unanticipated moments, such as Roger Daltry talking about the profound impact of seeing Elvis perform. Voiceover interviews with such key players of the era as Michael Caine, Paul McCartney, Marianne Faithfull, Twiggy and Mary Quant add to the overall feast, making the film an attractive offering.

Leonard Bernstein was one of the first classical composers in America to achieve both popular and critical acclaim. He was eclectic in his sources – drawing on jazz, modernism, Jewish music and Broadway – and many of Bernstein’s scores are remarkably well suited to dance. To celebrate the centenary year of the composer’s birth, The Royal Ballet has united all three of its associate choreographers to celebrate the dynamic range and danceability of Bernstein’s music. At the heart of the programme is the revival of Liam Scarlett’s ‘The Age of Anxiety’, created in 2014 to Bernstein’s soul-searching Second Symphony. Both symphony and ballet are inspired by W.H. An Australian western set in 1920’s Northern Territory, where an aged Aboriginal farmhand shoots a white man in self-defence and goes on the run.

Middle-aged Aboriginal Sam’s (Hamilton Morris) relationship with his ill-tempered neighbour Harry (Ewen Leslie) quickly deteriorates, culminating in a shootout in which Sam kills Harry in self-defence.

Sam becomes a wanted criminal for the murder of a white man, and is forced to flee with his wife across glorious but harsh desert country. A hunting party led by the local lawman (Bryan Brown) is formed to track Sam down, but as the true details of the killing start to surface, the community questions whether justice is really being served. A beautiful, stark, superbly shot movie, and a great example of what Australian cinema has to offer.

This Cannes 2017 winner for Best Screenplay (Lynne Ramsay) and Best Actor (Joaquin Phoenix) follows the agitated, fragmented inner journey of Joe, a kind of vigilante for hire who finds missing people.

Joe (Phoenix) searches for the daughter of a local politician who is involved in a child trafficking ring. But as depicted by Ramsay’s staccato editing style, Joe does not think in linear fashion. His mind is a tangle of memories and flash-forwards and what-ifs, all rendered in short, sharp, shock cuts. This is a bold piece of storytelling, with a dream-like feel that evokes its hellish, predominantly nocturnal world very compellingly. Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood provides the threatening electronic score which breathlessly pursues our troubled hero. You may remember director Lynne Ramsay from her brilliant ‘We Need to Talk About Kevin’ (2011).

Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story

The world’s most beautiful woman was also the secret inventor of communication systems (Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth), but her arresting looks stood in the way of her being given the credit she deserved – until now.

If this story was pitched for a fictional film, it would be laughed out of the room as being too far-fetched… but Lamarr was no ordinary screen siren. When Nazi U-Boats torpedo a ship carrying 83 school children during WWII, Lamarr, after shooting her scenes on set, works on a secret radio system that will allow the Allies to torpedo U-Boats with deadly accuracy. Her sketches remain ideas until a chance encounter with an eccentric composer enables her to transform them into useful technology that would change history. Recognition (and compensation) proved elusive in Lamarr’s lifetime, but in this marvellous documentary, a brilliant woman finally gets her due.

Live from the Royal Opera House An opera by Giuseppe Verdi in four acts sung in Italian with English subtitles in a revised production of Phyllida Lloyd’s 2002 original.

Verdi’s life-long love affair with Shakespeare’s works began with ‘Macbeth’, a play he considered to be ‘one of the greatest creations of man’. The warrior Macbeth fights on the side of the King of Scotland – but when a coven of witches prophesise that he shall become king himself, a ruthless ambition drives Macbeth and his wife to horrific acts. Phyllida Lloyd’s 2002 production for The Royal Opera is richly hued, shot through with black, red and gold.

Lloyd depicts the Macbeths’ childlessness as the dark sadness lurking behind their terrible deeds. The Royal Opera’s production uses Verdi’s 1865 Paris revision of the opera, which includes Lady Macbeth’s riveting aria ‘La luce langue’.

Back by popular demand from our French Film Festival in November, comes this sweeping biography of the legendary, Nobel Prize–winning physicist and chemist.

Curie courted controversy with both her challenging of France’s male-dominated academic establishment and her unconventional romantic life. Physicist, chemist, and pioneer in the study of radioactivity, Curie spent her life setting precedents. She was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize and the first person to win it twice. Director Marie Noëlle conjures turn-of-the-century Europe with camerawork whose restless precision is an analogue of the brilliant scientist’s mind. The Art of Darkness: Film Noir Reconsidered

Day Course led by Richard Cupidi What is Film Noir anyway? Is it an exercise in visual style, is it a genre, the dark underside of the American Dream, a film movement like the French New Wave, the collective pessimism of European emigres, a moody poetic realism, or all of the above?

Since 1946, when French film critics first invented the term, “Film Noir” has been argued about and contested. In this informal, interactive workshop we’ll examine the themes and practices associated with Film Noir and with its later, more self-conscious incarnation “Neo-noir” to help us better understand Noir and why it still matters.

We’ll start by looking at those elements often employed in classic Noir: Expressionist visual style, themes of revenge and betrayal, antiheroes immersed in moods of paranoia, claustrophobia and obsession.

We’ll follow that with an examination of how post-classical “Neo-noir” has expanded the boundaries of what we imagine Film Noir to be.

Throughout the day there’ll be supporting film clips of classic as well as rarely-seen Noirs.

To close, we’ll develop a working definition of Film Noir and explore how we can put our accumulated knowledge into practice. Everyone welcome.

Women and Action from Silent Cinema to the Present Day To celebrate Women’s History Month and to start our exciting programme, Ian Haydn Smith presents a day course.

Name a female action hero. Most people would likely respond with Ripley in ‘Aliens’ or Sarah Connor in ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’.

But women have long played a proactive role in the thriller, crime and action film. To open a series of events celebrating Women’s History Month, Ian Haydn Smith looks back to the best female action movies and characters, from the silent crime serial ‘Les Vampires’ (1915) and Barbara Stanwyck in ‘Forty Guns’ (1957), to Geena Davis in ‘The Long Kiss Goodnight’ (1996) and Gal Gadot in ‘Wonder Woman (2017). The talk will place the films within an historical context and show that when it comes to kicking ass, men have much to learn. Ian is a frequent popular presenter at our cinema. He is a film journalist, critic and editor of Curzon magazine.

Female Directors Make their Mark!

Film audiences are now aware of the lack of women film directors.

In 2016, female directors accounted for only 7% of the top 250 films at the US Box Office. This course, which is part of our celebration Women’s History Month, looks at some of the best films directed by women.

In the first session, Ellen Cheshire will offer a brief historical overview of female directors and will focus on three international film directors, Jane Campion (pictured), Mira Nair and Deniz Gamze Erguven, discussing how they have made an impact on global cinema. Ellen Cheshire is a film writer and lecturer whose new book on Jane Campion is out later this year. In the second session, Rosemary Coxon, the Cinema’s Education Officer, will look at some of the best work of three of the most recent American and British film directors.

Amelia Francis – a student member of the Chichester University Young Historians group – presents a film which narrates the history of the Black Liberation Front (BLF), a British Black Power organisation present from 1971-1993.

The BLF’s main initiatives included: Grassroots newspaper (which featured a women’s column) a women’s group, black bookshops, supplementary schooling and a housing association.

This film was created by the Young Historians Project, a predominantly female group.
