Subtitled Screenings for the Hard of Hearing I thank you for the wonderful support of our upcoming subtitled screenings for the hard of hearing. Every email received gave me hope that we will continue the initiative after this trial. Films will be in the English language, with English subtitles added. Even though the subtitles are designed for hard of hearing, anyone is welcome to these screenings. Many patrons without hearing difficulties have commented on how subtitles will add to their enjoyment. Subtitled screenings will be the first screening on a Monday, with the first three being ‘The Post’ (5 Feb), ‘Journey’s End’ (12 Feb) and ’Phantom Thread’ (19 Feb). The following three (‘The Mercy’, The 15:17 to Paris’, and ‘Finding Your Feet’) are unconfirmed at the time of going to print – please check our website for details. See you at the Cinema (General Manager) 2

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

We kick off the 2018 Awards Season with what may be the best film you will see all year! In this darkly comic drama, a mother personally challenges the local authorities to solve her daughter’s murder, when they fail to catch the culprit. Nominated for 9 BAFTAs! After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter’s murder case, Mildred Hayes (Frances McDormand) makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby (Woody Harrelson), the town’s revered chief of police. When his secondin-command Officer Dixon (Sam Rockwell), an immature mother’s boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing’s law enforcement is only exacerbated. The performances all round are outstanding, but McDormand and Rockwell really do have a shot at top honours at this year’s Academy Awards. McDonagh’s (‘In Bruges’, ‘Seven Psychopaths’) film may be awkwardly titled, but it is brilliantly executed. It is wildly violent, brilliantly funny and deeply moving. And so very smart! During the early days of WWII, the fate of Western Europe hangs on Winston Churchill, who must decide whether to negotiate with Hitler, or fight on against incredible odds. With the fall of France imminent, Britain faces its darkest hour as the threat of invasion looms. As the seemingly unstoppable Nazi forces advance, and with the Allied army cornered on the beaches of Dunkirk, the fate of Western Europe hangs on the leadership of the newlyappointed British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman). Ridley Scott’s new film about the kidnapping of American oil tycoon John Paul Getty’s grandson in the 1970’s. The film follows the taking of 16-year-old John Paul Getty III (Charlie Plummer) and the desperate attempt by his devoted mother Gail (Michelle Williams) to convince his billionaire grandfather (Christopher Plummer) to pay the ransom. When Getty Sr. refuses, Gail attempts to sway him as her son’s captors become increasingly volatile and brutal. With her son’s life in the balance, Gail and Getty’s advisor (Mark Wahlberg) become unlikely allies in the race against time that ultimately reveals the true and lasting value of love over money. Yes – this is the film that originally had Kevin Spacey as Getty Sr. but after sexual allegations against Spacey, Ridley Scott took the drastic step of reshooting all his scenes with Plummer in his place. My Blind Date With Life

Mein Blind Date mit dem Leben An ambitious young man struggles to achieve his dream of becoming an employee in a Munich luxury hotel, despite being strongly visually impaired. A German ‘Untouchable’ is how this film is being promoted. This true-facts-based comedy is a buddy movie about Saliya (Kostja Ullmann), a young man who is going blind, but with the help of close friends, disguises the fact when working at a top hotel in Munich. But when Saliya falls in love with Laura (Anna Maria Mühe), the elaborate deception he so carefully put together begins to fall apart. ‘Blind Date’ was a box-office hit in Germany, with close to 350,000 admissions in its first two weeks, and is brought back to New Park after our Premiere screening in the 2017 Chichester Film Festival. Bolshoi Ballet ‘Lady of the Camellias’ is a ballet by John Neumeier in 3 acts and a prologue, with music by Frédéric Chopin which is also the subject of Verdi’s ‘La Traviata’. As he arrives in Paris for the first time, the young and naive Armand is utterly captivated after meeting the ravishing and most desirable courtesan Marguerite Gautier. Their encounter gives birth to a passionate yet doomed love. Alexandre Dumas fils’s novel comes to life on the Bolshoi stage, with prima Svetlana Zakharova as the ailing Marguerite seeking love and redemption from her life as a courtesan. The Bolshoi brings choreographer John Neumeier’s work of rare beauty and tragic depth to new emotional heights, accompanied by Chopin’s romantic piano score. Dancers include Svetlana Zakharova (Marguerite Gautier), Edvin Revazov (Armand Duval) and Anna Tikhomirova (Manon Lescaut). Captured live Dec 2015. 185m including 2 intervals

A cover-up that spanned four U.S. Presidents pushed the country’s first female newspaper publisher and a hard-driving editor to join an unprecedented battle between journalist and government. Steven Spielberg directs Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks in a thrilling drama about the unlikely partnership between The Washington Post’s Katharine Graham (Streep), the first female publisher of a major American newspaper, and editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks), as they race to catch up with The New York Times to expose a massive cover-up of government secrets that spanned three decades and four U.S. Presidents. The two must overcome their differences as they risk their careers – and their very freedom – to help bring longburied truths to light. ‘The Post’ marks the first time Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have collaborated on a project. Tosca

Booking Ref

Live from the Royal Opera House ‘Tosca’ is one of the great evenings of opera, and from its strident opening chords conjures up a world of political instability and menace. Giacomo Puccini’s dramatic opera is in three Acts sung in Italian with English subtitles. Jonathan Kent’s production for The Royal Opera captures the dangerous political turbulence of Rome in 1800. The Chief of Police, Scarpia – one of the most malevolent villains in opera – ruthlessly pursues and tortures enemies of the state. His dark, demonic music contrasts with the expansive melodies of the idealistic lovers, Tosca and Cavaradossi, who express their passion in sublime arias, including ‘Vissi d’arte’ and ‘E lucevan le stelle’. Puccini’s dramatic work was a hit with audiences on its 1900 premiere and it remains one of the most performed of all operas – with its gripping plot and glorious music, it’s easy to see why. The meticulously researched score is infused with authentic detail, from distant cannon fire during the Act I ‘Te Deum’ to tolling church bells and the sounds of a firing squad. Singers include Adrianne Pieczonka, Joseph Calleja, Gerald Finley; Conductor Dan Ettinger; Director Jonathan Kent. 180m inc 2 intervals S Subtitled screening

Paris Pieds Nus A fun and hectic tale of peculiar people finding love, while lost in the City of Light. One of the highlights of the recent French Film Festival UK. When Fiona’s (Fiona Gordon) orderly life is disrupted by a letter of distress from her 88-year-old Aunt Martha (delightfully portrayed by the late Emmanuelle Riva, Oscar-nominated for ‘Amour’) who is living in Paris, she hops on the first plane she can. She arrives only to discover that Martha has disappeared. In an avalanche of spectacular disasters, she encounters Dom (Dominique Abel), the affable, but annoying tramp who just won’t leave her alone. ‘Lost in Paris’ with its trademark antics and intricately choreographed slapstick, will have you leaving the cinema with a gleeful skip in your step and a renewed zest for life. Brad has a satisfying career and a comfortable suburban life with his sweetnatured wife (Jenna Fischer), and their musical prodigy son, Troy (Austin Abrams), but it’s not quite what he imagined during his college glory days. Showing Troy around Boston, he can’t help compare his life with those of his four best college friends: Hollywood bigshot (Mike White), hedge fund founder (Luke Wilson), tech entrepreneur (Jemaine Clement), and political pundit and author (Michael Sheen). Cecil Beaton, the Oscar-winning set and costume designer of ‘My Fair Lady’ and ‘Gigi,’ emerges as a colourful and sometimes controversial personality in this comprehensive documentary. The film opens with the famous Ascot sequence from ‘My Fair Lady’ – a panorama of stunning black-and-white costumes in Edwardian England, certainly one of the most striking musical sequences ever filmed. The documentary quickly reminds us that Beaton’s talents went beyond his memorable costumes. In a way he was frustrated by his own wide-ranging interests, but Beaton was too restless to specialize, and he succeeded as a photographer, a theatre and film designer and a gifted writer. There are telling interviews with photographer David Bailey, artist David Hockney and designer Isaac Mizrahi, as well as Beaton’s biographer Hugo Vickers. L’Amant d’un Jour A young woman returns home after the breakdown of a relationship to discover her father is dating a woman her age. After a devastating breakup, the only place 23-year-old Jeanne (Esther Garrel) has to stay in Paris is the small flat belonging to her father, Gilles (Éric Caravaca). But when Jeanne arrives, utterly broken-hearted, she finds her father living with a new girlfriend her own age: Arianne (Louise Chevillotte). Both young women are looking for their own kind of love in a city filled with possibilities. Philippe Garrel, the 69-year-old veteran of the French New Wave, has produced a casual, bittersweet, and intoxicating study of relationships in flux. As in his 2015 film ‘In the Shadow of Women’, this is shot in widescreen black and white (by Renato Berta), and staged in a prosaic suite of bedrooms, cafés and side streets. 1942: The Third Reich is at its peak. The Czech resistance in London decides to plan the most ambitious military operation of WWII: Anthropoid. Two young recruits are sent to Prague to assassinate the most ruthless Nazi leader – Reich-protector Reinhard Heydrich, Head of the SS, the Gestapo, and the architect of the “Final Solution”. The first half of the film charts the unlikely ascent to power of Heydrich (Jason Clarke), a loser dismissed from the army who is initially egged on by his flag-waving, National-Socialism-loving wife. The second half catches up with the Czechoslovak Resistance fighters who plot Heydrich’s assassination. In their late twenties, Jozef Gabcik (Jack Reynor) and Jan Kubis (Jack O’Connell) are parachuted into the Czechoslovak countryside and make their way to Prague, where the Resistance hides the duo while they prepare their mission. In Partnership with The Winslow Boy

Sat 10 Feb 11:00 CFT Tour 12:45 Film

Writer and director David Mamet’s sixth film is a thoughtprovoking and ethically charged tour de force based on Terence Rattigan’s 1946 play. It focuses on the true story of a middle-class English family who in 1910 take on the Crown and the Admiralty after their son is falsely accused of cashing in a fellow student’s postal order at the Naval College. Convinced of 14-year-old Ronnie’s (Guy Edwards) innocence, the Winslow family puts everything on the line for him. His highly principled father, Arthur (Nigel Hawthorne), is worn down by the long and drawn-out legal battle. His mother, Grace (Gemma Jones), grows anxious over her husband’s failing health and the financial burdens of their son’s defence. Mamet draws out topdrawer performances from the entire cast. Journey’s End

Booking Ref

Set in a dugout in Aisne in 1918, it is the story of a group of British officers, led by the mentally disintegrating young officer Stanhope, variously awaiting their fate. Sam Claflin is Captain Stanhope, the much-admired commanding officer of an infantry company waiting nervously for an expected German onslaught. They know they’re a sacrificial gesture, undermanned and under-equipped but ordered to “hold them up as long as you can”. Stanhope is on the brink of mental collapse, holding himself together with whisky but sticking it out because “it’s the only thing a decent man can do”. There have been several film and TV versions of RC Sherriff’s WW1 play since it’s London debut in 1928, but this new incarnation, shown at the 2017 London Film Festival, is testament to the lingering potency of the piece. Also stars Paul Bettany, Asa Butterfield and Toby Jones. UK 2017 Saul Dibb 107m

Sunset Boulevard

To complement our Film Noir Day Course on Feb 17, we present this Film Noir classic where aging silent-film star Norma Desmond ensnares a young screenwriter in this poison-pen valentine to Hollywood. At the heart of the story is Norma Desmond, a fictional former queen of the silent era, played with mesmerizing intensity by Gloria Swanson, herself a former queen of the silent era. She takes up with Joe Gills (William Holden), a two-bit screenwriter on the make, and virtually holds him captive in her Hollywood gothic mansion. ‘Sunset Boulevard’, one of the greatest movies about the movies, may be a fiction, but rarely is fiction shot through so glitteringly with real life. Which is probably what makes it such a melancholy pleasure – but one you return to again and again. If you haven’t seen it on the big screen – do not miss this rare opportunity. Set in the glamour of 1950’s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the centre of British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutantes and dames. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by love. Paul Thomas Anderson (‘There Will Be Blood’ – also with Day-Lewis) paints an illuminating portrait both of an artist on a creative journey, and the women who keep his world running. There is such pure delicious pleasure in this film, in its strangeness, its vehemence, its flourishes of absurdity, carried off with superb elegance. A ballet in three Acts and a Prologue with music by Joby Talbot. Building on the success of ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’, ‘The Winter’s Tale’ received ecstatic praise at its premiere, acclaimed by critics and audiences alike for its intelligent, distinctive and emotionally powerful story, told through exquisite dance. It is now widely judged to be a modern ballet classic. The story follows the destruction of a marriage through consuming jealousy, the abandonment of a child and a seemingly hopeless love. Yet, through remorse and regret – and after a seemingly miraculous return to life – the ending is one of forgiveness and reconciliation. Deep in the heart of New York’s ultra-orthodox Hasidic Jewish community, Menashe – a kind, hapless grocery store clerk – struggles to make ends meet and responsibly parent his young son, Rieven, following his wife Leah’s death. Tradition prohibits Menashe from raising his son alone, so Rieven’s strict uncle adopts him, leaving Menashe heartbroken. Meanwhile, though Menashe seems to bungle every challenge in his path, his rabbi grants him one special week with Rieven before Leah’s memorial. It’s his chance to prove himself a suitable man of faith and fatherhood, and restore respect among his doubters. Doubling as a fascinating look at a subculture that is normally sealed off from the rest of us and a gently amusing comedy of manners, this manages to say an awful lot by, paradoxically, saying it endearingly gently. Carmen

Live from the Royal Opera House Carmen is the best-known work by French composer Georges Bizet, and one of the most famous operas in the entire art form. The opera is in four acts, sung in French with English subtitles. Numbers such as the ‘Habanera’ and ‘The Toreador Song’ have permeated the popular consciousness as little else has. This everpopular opera is given a fresh point of view in Barrie Kosky’s highly physical new production, originally created for Frankfurt Opera. The Australian director is one of the world’s most sought-after opera directors. For ‘Carmen’ he has devised a far-from-traditional version, incorporating music written by Bizet for the score but not usually heard, and giving a new voice to the opera’s endlessly fascinating central character. Director Barrie Kosky; Conductor Jakub Hrůša; Singers include Anna Goryachova, Francesco Meli, Anett Fritsch and Kostas Smoriginas. 200m including intervals

In the early 2000s, an artistically-inclined seventeen year-old comes of age in Sacramento, California. Greta Gerwig reveals herself to be a bold new cinematic voice with her directorial debut, she creates a coming-of-age story that is wry, funny and touchingly real. Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson (Saoirse Ronan) fights against but is exactly like her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mom (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird’s father (Tracy Letts) loses his job. ‘Lady Bird’ is an affecting look at the relationships that shape us, the beliefs that define us, and the unmatched beauty of a place called home. It is all about watching Lady Bird learn to fly and leave the nest; familiar though that sounds, this film is so funny and so moving (and so smart) that it’s fair to say you’ve never seen anything quite like it before. This film tells the story of the ‘Hitler émigrés’ – the many thousands of people, mainly but not exclusively Jews, who found safe haven in the UK after Hitler came to power, and the many contributions they made to their adopted country. Director Tony Britten says: “I have been fascinated by the profound influence that the immigrants from Nazi Germany and Austria in the 1930’s had on the arts, science and business of the UK. When I discovered the collection of celebrated photographer Lotte Meitner-Graf, it seemed like a wonderful door was opening on this project”. Lotte’s escape from Austria in 1938 mirrored many of her compatriots, and subsequent subjects. She settled in London and after the war opened a studio in Bond Street. This documentary attempts to ‘re-create’ that studio, and those that passed through it. Split into two halves it follows the tumultuous stories of nine couples, plunging straight into the brutal and absurd endings of their relationships first, before travelling back to the moments when the spark of love between them first emerged. Using London as their match-maker, each of their stories is unique yet familiar to us all. Alice is a highly competent sheep-hand who returns to a decaying family farm after the death of her abusive father: Can she and her traumatized brother (Mark Stanley) run the operation together? Director Clio Barnard (‘The Selfish Giant’) elicits great performances from the two leads. Stanley is superb, yet it is Wilson that will leave you shaken. A Fantastic Woman

Una Mujer Fantástica Chilean filmmaker Sebastian Lelio’s ‘A Fantastic Woman’ is a mesmerizing piece of work, thanks to Daniela Vega’s powerful, award-worthy lead performance. Orlando (Francisco Reyes) is a middle-aged, silver-haired textile factory manager who falls in love with a young singer called Marina (Vega). After celebrating Marina’s birthday one evening, Orlando falls seriously ill, and in that moment, Marina’s seemingly stable world begins to crumble right before her eyes. She will have to battle the very same forces that she has spent a lifetime fighting just to become the woman she is now – a complex, strong, forthright and fantastic woman. Much will likely be made of the fact that Vega not only stars as a transgender woman, but is one herself, and delivers a star-making turn of quiet suffering and steely resolve, ably shouldering the dramatic load of a film that keeps her, at all times, front and centre. Bernstein Centenary Live New McGregor / The Age of Anxiety / New Wheeldon

ROH Ballet Live This Royal Opera House programme includes two world premieres by Resident Choreographer Wayne McGregor and Artistic Associate Christopher Wheeldon. Leonard Bernstein was one of the first classical composers in America to achieve both popular and critical acclaim. He was eclectic in his sources – drawing on jazz, modernism, Jewish music and Broadway – and many of Bernstein’s scores are remarkably well suited to dance. To celebrate the centenary year of the composer’s birth, The Royal Ballet has united all three of its associate choreographers to celebrate the dynamic range and danceability of Bernstein’s music. At the heart of the programme is the revival of Liam Scarlett’s ‘The Age of Anxiety’, created in 2014 to Bernstein’s soul-searching Second Symphony. Both symphony and ballet are inspired by W.H. Auden’s masterful modernist poem, itself written in response to the atmosphere of disillusionment and uncertainty that followed the end of World War II. 180m approx including 2 intervals

Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story

The world’s most beautiful woman was also the secret inventor of communication systems (Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth), but her arresting looks stood in the way of her being given the credit she deserved – until now. When Nazi U-Boats torpedo a ship carrying 83 school children during WWII, Lamarr, after shooting her scenes on set, works on a secret radio system that will allow the Allies to torpedo U-Boats with deadly accuracy. Her sketches remain ideas until a chance encounter with an eccentric composer enables her to transform them into useful technology that would change history. The Art of Darkness: Film Noir Reconsidered

Day Course led by Richard Cupidi What is Film Noir anyway? Is it an exercise in visual style, is it a genre, the dark underside of the American Dream, a film movement like the French New Wave, the collective pessimism of European emigres, a moody poetic realism, or all of the above? Since 1946, when French film critics first invented the term, “Film Noir” has been argued about and contested. In this informal, interactive workshop we’ll examine the themes and practices associated with Film Noir and with its later, more self-conscious incarnation “Neo-noir” to help us better understand Noir and why it still matters. We’ll start by looking at those elements often employed in classic Noir: Expressionist visual style, themes of revenge and betrayal, antiheroes immersed in moods of paranoia, claustrophobia and obsession. We’ll follow that with an examination of how post-classical “Neo-noir” has expanded the boundaries of what we imagine Film Noir to be. Throughout the day there’ll be supporting film clips of classic as well as rarely-seen Noirs. To close, we’ll develop a working definition of Film Noir and explore how we can put our accumulated knowledge into practice. Everyone welcome.

Film Education in this Awards Season Alongside the three courses plus film detailed over these three pages, this season we also present four films with Intros/Q&A’s, as well as a special event in conjunction with the Chichester Festival Theatre.

Kick Ass!

Booking Ref

Women and Action from Silent Cinema to the Present Day To celebrate Women’s History Month and to start our exciting programme, Ian Haydn Smith presents a day course. Name a female action hero. Most people would likely respond with Ripley in ‘Aliens’ or Sarah Connor in ‘Terminator 2: Judgement Day’. But women have long played a proactive role in the thriller, crime and action film. To open a series of events celebrating Women’s History Month, Ian Haydn Smith looks back to the best female action movies and characters, from the silent crime serial ‘Les Vampires’ (1915) and Barbara Stanwyck in ‘Forty Guns’ (1957), to Geena Davis in ‘The Long Kiss Goodnight’ (1996) and Gal Gadot in ‘Wonder Woman (2017). The talk will place the films within an historical context and show that when it comes to kicking ass, men have much to learn. Ian is a frequent popular presenter at our cinema. He is a film journalist, critic and editor of Curzon magazine.

Female Directors Make their Mark!

Booking Ref

Film audiences are now aware of the lack of women film directors. In 2016, female directors accounted for only 7% of the top 250 films at the US Box Office. This course, which is part of our celebration Women’s History Month, looks at some of the best films directed by women. In the first session, Ellen Cheshire will offer a brief historical overview of female directors and will focus on three international film directors, Jane Campion (pictured), Mira Nair and Deniz Gamze Erguven, discussing how they have made an impact on global cinema. Ellen Cheshire is a film writer and lecturer whose new book on Jane Campion is out later this year. In the second session, Rosemary Coxon, the Cinema’s Education Officer, will look at some of the best work of three of the most recent American and British film directors.
