Maurice Flitcroft, a dreamer and unrelenting optimist, manages to gain entry to The British Open Golf Championship and subsequently shoots the worst round in Open history, becoming a folk hero in the process. Flitcroft (Mark Rylance of ‘Bridge of Spies’ and ‘Wolf Hall’) is 46 years old and living with his wife Jean (Sally Hawkins) and their sons. He is also facing redundancy, after years of working as a shipyard crane-operator. By chance, he catches the end of the British Open, witnessing the triumph of Tom Watson. He decides to join his local golf club, and his innocence/ignorance allows him to exploit a loophole in the admissions process for the British Open. And shockingly - there he is, doing his humble strut on the world stage, smiling anxiously as his official (lack of) credentials are announced. A gorgeously acted film with slapstick humour that will make you cry with laughter. The film we have all been craving for after the past two years. UK 2022 CRAIG ROBERTS 102M
