THE POWER OF THE DOG
Multi award-winning Jane Campion’s long-awaited return to big-screen film is an unflinching western that ripples with prickly tension with Benedict Cumberbatch as a hard-bitten rancher. Cumberbatch and Jesse Plemons star as the Burbank brothers, Phil and George, who run a successful cattle ranch in the hills of Montana. Phil is outraged when George abruptly takes a wife (Kirstin Dunst). This is a brawny, brooding drama about the wreckage caused by men, reflected in Johnny Greenwood’s haunting and atmospheric score. Cumberbatch is a revelation, as is Kodi Smit-McPhee as George’s stepson. UK/AUSTRALIA 2021 JANE CAMPION 126M BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650 | 3

RED ROCKET
PERFORMANCE
The wildly entertaining new film from writer-director Sean Baker (‘The Florida Project’, ‘Tangerine’). Utterly hilarious and dramatically meaningful. Finding himself down and out in Los Angeles, ex porn star Mikey Saber (Simon Rex) decides to crawl back to his hometown of Texas City, Texas, where his estranged wife and mother-in-law are living. Just as this dysfunctional family seems to be making things work, Mikey meets a young woman named Strawberry (Suzanna Son) working the cash register at a local doughnut shop and falls right back into his old habits. ‘Red Rocket’ is a darkly funny and humane portrait of a uniquely American hustler and a hometown that barely tolerates him. Funny, raw, kinky, and packed with a rousing, hilarious performance by Simon Rex. USA 2021 SEAN BAKER 130M

EASTER IN ART
EXHIBITION ON SCREEN The Greatest Story Ever Painted. The story of Christ’s death and resurrection has dominated western culture for the past 2000 years. It is perhaps the most significant historical event of all time, as recounted by the gospels but, equally, as depicted by the greatest artists in history. From the triumphant to the savage, the ethereal to the tactile, some of western civilization’s greatest artworks focus on this pivotal moment. This beautifully crafted film explores the Easter story as depicted in art, from the time of the early Christians to the present day. Shot on location in Jerusalem, United States and throughout Europe, the film explores the different ways artists have depicted the Easter story through the ages and thus depicts the history of us all. “Anyone who has any interest in art… anyone who has any interest in visual culture… has to be interested in the Christian story.” Rachel Campbell-Johnston, The Times. PARIS, 13TH DISTRICT
LES OLYMPIADES, PARIS 13E Jacques Audiard reinvents his own cinema with this fresh story of lovers intertwined in today’s Paris. A story about four young people looking for love, or eluding it, in a contemporary, multi-ethnic, digitally connected metropolis. Émilie meets Camille who is attracted to Nora, who crosses paths with Amber. Three girls and a boy - friends, sometimes lovers and often both. The film is Audiard’s first since 2012 ‘Rust and Bone’ to adapt a predominantly female perspective. The setting is the 13th arrondissement in south-east Paris. Paris is more than just a setting here, but absolutely defines the way that the characters live and connect, the rhythms and pressures of their existence. A very sexy, vibrant and uplifting take on modern love and Paris, as four characters cross paths and destiny. (Subtitles) FRANCE 2021 JACQUES AUDIARD 105M BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650 | 5

SIDNEY POITIER - THE DEFIANT ONE
AUDITORIUM TALK When Sidney Poitier died in January, he left behind him a legacy, which not only included some exceptional performances - his police detective in ‘In the Heat of the Night’ and his teacher in a tough London school in ‘To Sir, With Love’, to name but two but also his status as an on-screen symbol of the civil rights movement. Roger Griffith MBE, who will be looking back at Sir Sidney’s career in a talk illustrated with a wide range of clips, will be explaining why he was an iconic hero and an inspiration and highlighting the ways in which the issues raised in films such as ‘The Defiant Ones’ and ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner’ remain highly relevant today. This is an opportunity to celebrate the work of a ground-breaking star, the very first black man to win the Best Actor Academy Award. 120M

A black Philadelphia police detective is mistakenly suspected of a local murder while passing through a racially hostile Mississippi town. Sidney Poitier and Rod Steiger are riveting. African-American Philadelphia police detective Virgil Tibbs (Poitier) is arrested on suspicion of murder by Bill Gillespie (Steiger), the racist police chief of tiny Sparta, Mississippi. After Tibbs proves not only his own innocence but that of another man, he joins forces with Gillespie to track down the real killer. Their investigation takes them through every social level of the town, with Tibbs making enemies as well as unlikely friends as he hunts for the truth. Poitier’s sharp dressed Tibbs is a wonderfully cool presence among the sweaty bigoted locals. Steiger won the Oscar, but the honours should have been shared. THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD
VERDENS VERSTE MENNESKE Chronicling four years in the life of Julie, this modern dramedy about the quest for love and meaning in contemporary Oslo has been nominated for the Best Foreign Film Bafta and Oscar. The feeling that the burning light of promise is quickly extinguishing, consumed by the status quo-imposed milestones, drives Norwegian director Joachim Trier’s phenomenally inventive dramedy. “I feel like a spectator in my own life”, says Julie a young woman still piecing together the spectrum of her emotional wants and needs. Fluidly told in twelve chapters, the film features a breakout performance by Cannes Best Actress winner Renate Reinsve as she explores new professional avenues and embarks on relationships with two very different men (Anders Danielsen Lie and Herbert Nordrum) in her search for happiness and identity. Robert Pattinson inhabits a more vulnerable and soulful caped crusader on the trail of the mysterious Riddler. When the Riddler, a sadistic serial killer, begins murdering key political figures in Gotham, Batman is forced to investigate the city’s hidden corruption and question his family’s involvement. Director and co-writer Matt Reeves has created a new Batman iteration in which Robert Pattinson reinvents billionaire Bruce Wayne as an elegantly wasted rock star recluse. Zoë Kravitz is stylish and assured as cat burglar Selina Kyle, or Catwoman. Andy Serkis plays Wayne’s butler Alfred while Paul Dano as Riddler and Colin Farrell as Penguin make splendid adversaries. Brooding, brilliant, and breathtaking, ‘The Batman’ hits that elusive sweet spot between a made-for-themasses popcorn flick and a deeply complex political thriller. FOCUS ON DOCUMENTARY
Harry Wootliff’s film follows a young woman (Ruth Wilson) living on the fringes of society who becomes intoxicated by a stranger who overwhelms her quiet life. A Jobcentre worker strikes up a romantic relationship with a mysterious ex-convict who visits her office and has just been released from prison after “a run-in with an articulated lorry and a lamp post”. Adapted from Deborah Kay Davies’s novel ‘True Things About Me’, the film certainly knows its way around the intricacies of bad relationships, to the point where it provides viewers with a kind of step-by-step roadmap through all the tripwires and snares. A cinematic and musical odyssey that explores the remarkable relationship between humans and rivers. Throughout history, rivers have shaped our landscapes and our journeys; flowed through our cultures and dreams. River takes its audience on a journey through space and time; spanning six continents, and drawing on extraordinary contemporary cinematography, including satellite filming, the film shows rivers on scales and from perspectives never seen before. Its union of image, music and sparse, poetic script create a film that is both dream-like and powerful, honouring the wildness of rivers but also recognising their vulnerability. Rather than a dry scolding about the importance of our natural resources, River invites us in and shows us why this ecology is not only beautiful but vital. LE FABULEUX DESTIN D’AMÉLIE POULAIN Amélie, an innocent and naive girl in Paris, with her own sense of justice, decides to help those around her and along the way, discovers love. Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s candy-coloured 2001 film was a massive art-cinema hit in its day, and Jeunet, along with his co-writer Guillaume Laurant, came up with a tremendously seductive, soufflé-light modern fairytale; its main theme is one of childlike whimsy, but there are unmistakable undertones of sleaziness and malice. Audrey Tautou’s star-making performance fits the film like a glove. Ten years on, what comes across most powerfully is Jeunet’s athletic, playful directing style, a tour de force of tricks, gags and effects. It has charm, fluency and style. CRIES AND WHISPERS
VISKNINGAR OCH ROP When a woman dying of cancer in early twentieth-century Sweden is visited by her two sisters, long-repressed feelings between the siblings rise to the surface. The film’s approach is not linear. Through the use of flashbacks, dream sequences and enactments of journal excerpts, the timeline becomes muddled. While the main story focuses upon Agnes’ death, the forays into the past concern Anna, Karin and Maria, giving us greater insight into these three women, showing incidents from their lives that explain why they react as they do when faced with a stricken woman on her deathbed. The sisters have made little of their lives and even in extremis cannot console or comfort each other. Ingmar Bergman unflinchingly probes the pain of solitude, disappointment, godlessness and death. THE OUTFIT
A gripping and masterful thriller in which an expert tailor (Mark Rylance) must outwit a dangerous group of mobsters in order to survive one fateful night. Rylance plays Leonard, a British tailor who left his homeland (for shadowy reasons) with nothing but his tailor’s scissors, and set up shop in Chicago. The reason he’s been able to make a success of things is that he is almost solely patronised by the local gangsters. Things come to a head when the gangsters descend on Leonard’s business in search of a mole in their organisation. Secrets and lies abound as the outwardly benign Leonard looks to turn the table on his mob guests. As pleasingly assembled as a good crossword puzzle, this is top-tier cinema. A Texan town where the local Nissan dealership gives away a new pickup to whoever can hold on to it the longest is the setting for this gripping cautionary tale. Of the contestants, it is unassuming family guy Kyle who becomes the focus of the story. He’s the target of the mind games played by the alpha males who glower across the flatbed; he’s just naïve enough to believe that failure to win is a failure as a husband and father. Like a modern version of ‘They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?’ the film condemns a society that turns everything into a show and takes advantage of poor people to have fun at their expense. Multi award-winning ‘Belfast’ is Kenneth Branagh’s irresistible memoir about growing up amid the Troubles in Northern Ireland where he was born. It’s a heavy subject - Northern Ireland in the 1960s, as the conflict between the Protestants and the Catholics rises, leaving the region in tumult - but ‘Belfast’ is an inviting and even warm look at a family that is doing its best to hold together while their community fractures around them. Branagh tells his very personal story through the eyes of a young boy. When you’re that young, you don’t understand the politics of conflict. You just try to make the best of your childhood, and ‘Belfast’ comes alive with wonder and heart against a backdrop of rising hostilities amongst the grown-ups. Beautiful, heartfelt storytelling. A family saga in the form of a poetic documentary essay, this debut feature by Portuguese writer-director Catarina Vasconcelos is an inventive, boldly imagistic piece that marks its creator as an original, deeply thoughtful talent. The tone of Vasconcelos’s economical but potent style of low-key cinematic magic might best be summed up by a shot that follows the slow development of a Polaroid photo, or by another moment, more spectacular but just as simple: a timelapse sequence of blossoming flowers. OPERATION MINCEMEAT
FOCUS ON FILM
A ‘stranger than fiction’ story of military misdirection in an effort to disguise the invasion of Sicily - starring Colin Firth and Matthew MacFadyen. Two brilliant intelligence officers attempt to trick the Nazis into thinking that Allied forces were planning to attack southern Europe by way of Greece rather than Sicily. Their plan was to disguise the body of a recently-deceased man, equipping it with misleading papers, then drop it off the coast of Spain where Nazi spies would take the bait. The absurdity of the plan throws up unexpectedly funny moments among the tense scenes of high-level espionage. Adapted from Ben Macintyre’s book of the same name, director John Madden (‘Shakespeare in Love’, ‘The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’) delivers an incredible true story of WWII intelligence operations. OPERATION BAMBOOZLE – CONNING THE ENEMY
With ‘Operation Mincemeat’ showing at the cinema, the education team will be looking at the art of trickery and misdirection in a time of war. ‘Operation Mincemeat’ tells the famous story of a plan to mislead the Nazi High Command, making them think that the Allied invasion of Europe would start in Greece, and not the actual target of Sicily. The ‘stranger than fiction’ plan came initially from the mind of James Bond author, Ian Fleming. That was not the only example of apparently far-fetched attempts at bamboozling the enemy, and a selection of films about outrageous examples of wartime subterfuge - both fact and fiction - will be featured alongside a look at ‘Operation Mincemeat’. Expect doppelgängers, double agents, and other forms of smoke and mirrors as the intelligence services go to extraordinary lengths to outwit their enemies. 120M BOX OFFICE 01243 786 650 | 19

COMPARTMENT NO.6
FOCUS ON DOCUMENTARY
HYTTI NRO 6 An archaeology student is on her way to Russia’s remote northwest when she has to share a compartment with a shavenheaded drunk. Despite the bone-chilling cold of its location in Murmansk in Russia’s remote north-west, there’s a wonderful human warmth and humour in this offbeat romantic story of strangers on a train. Sweet-natured, open-hearted Laura gets on this uncomfortable train in the freezing wintry cold, where she finds that she must share compartment number 6 with Vadim, a boorish, drunk young guy who is on his way to get a job in a coal mine in Murmansk and is openly abusive, misogynistic and philistine about Laura’s plans. It’s an improbably beautiful film about strangers on a train coming to terms with each other as they make peace with their troubled selves. (Subtitles) FINLAND 2021 JUHO KUOSMANEN 107M

JULIA
Tracing Julia Child’s surprising life story – a woman who found fame in her 50s, becoming an unlikely television sensation as a TV chef. Julia Child was a superstar whose ‘Mastering the Art of French Cooking’ sold more than 2.5 million copies and changed the way Americans think about food, television and even about women. Using never-before-seen archival footage, personal photos, first-person narratives, and cutting-edge, mouth-watering food cinematography, the film traces Julia Child’s surprising path, from her struggles to create and publish the revolutionary ‘Mastering the Art of French Cooking’ (1961) to her success on television. A leader in America’s food movement is rightfully praised and immortalised in a documentary that is a pleasure to watch. You can almost smell the Coq au Vin simmering on the stove. ‘The Northman’ is an epic revenge thriller, that explores how far a Viking prince will go to seek justice for his murdered father. After his uncle kills his father and usurps the throne, Amleth (Alexander Skarsgård) flees his home letting his grudge fester for a couple decades. The now grown-up prince sets out to fulfil the mantra he has been repeating to himself since that fateful day: “I will avenge you father, I will save you mother, I will kill you Fjölnir!” Set at the turn of the tenth century in Iceland, the film is based on the same ancient Norse legend that also inspired William Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’. Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe appear in supporting roles. USA 2022 ROBERT EGGARS 140M

ELEKTRA
Salzburg Festival In its 100th anniversary edition, the Salzburg Festival celebrates a real triumph with a mind-blowing new production of ‘Elektra’, one of the most famous masterpieces of opera history by the two festival founders, Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal. The Lithuanian soprano Ausrine Stundyte as vengeful and traumatised Elektra turns the opening of the Festival into a real knockout performance! Her sister Chrysotemis is sung by her compatriot Asmik Grigorian, who made her international breakthrough as acclaimed Salome at the 2018 Salzburg Festival, and whose performance once again draws the audience into spell. Tanja Ariane Baumgartner as Klytämnestra, Derek Welton as Orest and Michael Laurenz as Ägisth complete an ensemble of top-notch singers. Franz Welser-Möst brings his trademark flair to the pit where the brilliantly effervescent and then again heartrendingly gentle playing Vienna Philharmonic create gloriously exultant Strauss moments. MURINA
Tensions rise between restless teenager Julija and her oppressive father Ante when an old family friend arrives at their Croatian island home. Currents of rebellion, jealousy and desire roil in the glittering waters of Adriatic. If Patricia Highsmith had ever written a coming-of-age story set on the rocky, clear-watered Croatian coastline, it might have looked a lot like Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović’s bright, brooding debut, ‘Murina’. It makes the compelling case that even without labyrinthine murder plots or hard-bitten private eyes, a young girl’s passage into adulthood can be the perfect, darkly dazzling vehicle for a sunshine noir. When the handsome millionaire Javier arrives, he becomes for Julija a means of escape from the island to live a bigger life out in the world. The gorgeously shot film, named after the eel (murina, a local delicacy) that the father and daughter bring up from the ocean bed, is a wriggly, sensuous delight. SMALL BODY
PICCOLO CORPO A young woman who embarks on a desperate journey to reach a mysterious sanctuary to save her daughter’s soul from the eternal damnation of limbo. In an isolated island community in north-eastern Italy at the beginning of the 20th century, Agate gives birth to a stillborn baby. Terrified by being told her child will forever drift in spiritual limbo, she flees husband and family, with her baby’s corpse, embarking on a desperate, dangerous journey to the mountains, where there may be somewhere or someone that can save its soul. With its surprising plot twists and moments of genuine suspense, ‘Small Body’ could easily pass as a thriller, but its thoughtful tone, dark and enchanting atmosphere, and skilful pacing give it the feel of a Gothic fairy tale. BENEDETTA
PERFORMANCE
A 17th-century nun becomes entangled in a forbidden lesbian affair, but it’s her shocking religious visions that threaten to shake the Church to its very core. Paul Verhoeven possesses exactly the directorial chops for what has inevitably been dubbed ‘the lesbian nun movie’. Benedetta Carlini was a real nun in the early 17th century in Pescia, a small village in Northern Italy who started to have visions of Jesus. Are these manifestations of Christ real or part of an act? The question of Benedetta’s motives hangs in the air of the entire film almost like a mystery. When the worldly Bartolomea arrives at the convent, this leads to a forbidden passionate affair, which threatens to unleash chaos on both them and the town of Pescia. Verhoeven works in mysterious ways, mixing lurid, cynical exploitation with fluid storytelling and the principled irreverence of a satirist whose art always punches up against institutional dogma and scores a knockout. In their care is a tiny child called Lyra Belacqua, and in that child lies the fate of the future. And as the waters rise around them, powerful adversaries conspire for mastery of Dust: salvation to some, the source of infinite corruption to others. PRAYERS FOR THE STOLEN
NOCHE DE FUEGO Tatiana Huezo offers up a murky, mesmerising look at what it feels like for young women to come of age in a town where they have targets on their backs. Mexico has witnessed over 80,000 disappearances since former President Felipe Calderon declared a war on drug cartels in 2006. A quarter of the missing are women - the majority of them teenage girls. Huezo slowly lets the story unfold, telling it through a series of small episodes that add up to a chilling climax. We sympathise with Ana and her friends as we, too, try to piece together all the facts to understand what’s transpiring in this village; there’s a strong air of mystery keeping the world of adults just out of reach. Rather than focus on the terror of living in a cartel-torn area, the film becomes a tale of strength, heartbreak and jaw-dropping beauty. MOUNTAIN PATROL
KEKEXILI A moving true story about volunteers protecting antelope against poachers in the severe mountains of Tibet. In ‘Mountain Patrol’, director Lu Chuan gives us a fictionalised account of the real-life volunteer team who in the 1990s patrolled China’s huge, and sparsely beautiful, Kekexili nature reserve, fighting a running battle against armed poachers. Lu Chuan’s mastery of filmmaking is that you expect to despise the poachers but somehow you end up understanding their plight as much as that of the patrol. The harsh beauty and sheer power and majesty of the images command attention. This stunning film received the Audience Award for best film in the 2006 Chichester International Film Festival. SWAN LAKE
ROH LIVE The Royal Ballet’s sumptuous production of ‘Swan Lake’ returns to the Royal Opera House stage after its 2020 revival was interrupted by the pandemic’s closure of theatres. Prince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans while out hunting. When one of the swans turns into a beautiful woman, Odette, he is enraptured. But she is under a spell that holds her captive, allowing her to regain her human form only at night. Von Rothbart, arbiter of Odette’s curse, tricks the Prince into declaring his love for the identical Odile and thus breaking his vow to Odette. Doomed to remain a swan forever, Odette has but one way to break the sorcerer’s spell. The reimagining of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov’s towering masterpiece by Liam Scarlett is testament to the late choreographer’s abiding love of classicism and innate musicality which shine through the production. With its sublime score by Tchaikovsky and glittering designs by John Macfarlane, an irresistible mix of spectacle, mystery and passion infuses this audience favourite, one of the best-loved works in the 19th-century classical ballet canon. 200M APPROX INCLUDING 2 INTERVALS
