Convinced that his physical appearance makes him unworthy of his beloved Roxanne, the chivalrous Cyrano dares not express his ardour directly. The classic story gets a 21st century MGM musical-style update from director Joe Wright ‘Atonement’, ‘Hanna’ with Peter Dinklage as Cyrano. Unencumbered by the traditional huge nose, this Cyrano is stifled in his pursuit of Roxanne by his diminutive stature. Instead, he arms another suitor Christian with the poetry to woo Roxanne, The bargain is, “I will make you eloquent, while you make me handsome.” This version is embellished with lovely wistful ballads while Wright’s swooping cameras and beyond-dazzling production design bring new meaning to the word ‘panache’.
