welcome to
Chichester Cinema This season will mark the end of our 2019 Ruby Anniversary celebrations. Chichester Cinema at New Park (staff, trustees and volunteers) would like to thank every single one of our patrons that have made not only this year the wonderful success it has been, but all of our 40 unforgettable years. To celebrate, we serve up three more delicious Ruby Tuesday films – all at £2. We present three special strands throughout this Winter, headlined by the annual French Film Festival on Tour (see bottom of this page), and accompanied by two fabulously diverse films of the UK Jewish Film Festival, plus no less than eight fantastic musicals which make up the BFI Musicals Seasons, mostly on beautiful remastered prints. See online for Special Offers. Of course, we also have a host of quality new films on show. From the London Film Festival’s best film ‘Monos’, to Scorsese’s superstar laden ‘The Irishman’, via Aardman’s new Shaun the Sheep film ‘Farmageddon’, and ending with Sam Mendes’ unique WW1 film ‘1917’, there is literally something for everyone. See you at the Cinema (General Manager)
As the only UK festival devoted exclusively to contemporary and classic French and Francophone cinema, the French Film Festival has in 27 years earned an unrivalled reputation as a showcase for contemporary French cinema in this country and abroad. Steven Soderbergh (‘Erin Brockovich’) assembles a super A-list cast in this story of a widow investigating an insurance fraud, leading her to a pair of Panama law partners exploiting the world’s financial system. When her idyllic vacation takes an unthinkable turn, Ellen Martin (Meryl Streep) begins investigating a fake insurance policy, only to find herself down a rabbit hole of questionable dealings that can be linked to a Panama City law firm and its vested interest in helping the world’s wealthiest citizens amass even larger fortunes. Founding partners Jürgen Mossack (Gary Oldman) and Ramón Fonseca (Antonio Banderas) are experts in the seductive ways shell companies and offshore accounts help the rich and powerful prosper. We soon find out that Ellen’s predicament is only the tip of a financially seedy iceberg. USA 2019 Steven Soderbergh 96m

Winner of the Golden Lion for Best Film at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, this is not your typical ‘super-hero/villain’ film – this is one to watch! Joaquin Phoenix is extraordinary in the lead role. ‘Joker’ centres around the iconic arch nemesis of Batman, Arthur Fleck, a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night... but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events. Suddenly, the shunned outcast transforms into a symbol for Gotham’s most marginalized inhabitants, gaining new swagger. The film also stars Robert de Niro, but it is Phoenix who simultaneously challenges the viewer, and yet, makes it impossible for us to take our eyes off him. Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool
Booking Ref
A visionary, innovator and originator who defied categorization and embodied the word cool: a foray into the life and career of musical and cultural icon Miles Davis. Using words from Davis’ autobiography, this film offers an incisive insight into our understanding of the legendary musician. Newly released archival material, alongside interviews with pre-eminent historians and personal friends like Quincy Jones, illustrate a man of intensity and devotion to his craft. Despite the indignities of America during the time of segregation, nothing was going to stop Davis from realising his dream: to create a new form of musical expression. Davis’ influences are felt to this day, and this special documentary will make you want to feel the way Miles sounds. Sold out screenings at the 2019 Sundance and London Film Festivals. A vivid 18th century portrait of the stolen romantic relationship between two young women, played by Noémie Merlant and Adèle Haenel, who have a persuasive onscreen connection which gives this affair a life of its own. The Swimming Pool
Booking Ref
La Piscine Jacques Deray’s breakthrough film in 1969 was the first in a series of glossy box office hits that placed him in the first rank of successful French mainstream filmmakers throughout the Seventies. It’s a tour de force of erotic languor turning into fear and horror. Lovers Marianne and Jean-Paul (Romy Schneider and Alain Delon) spend their vacation in a villa near St Tropez. The main feature of the villa is a swimming pool, around which revolves most of the action. After a visit Marianne invites former lover Harry (Maurice Ronet) and his teenage daughter Penelope (a young Jane Birkin) to stay. Tension between the grown-ups rises especially when JeanPaul seduces Penelope. The consequences are deadly in a game of sexual jealousy and possessiveness. Newly restored. “Superbly controlled psychological thriller.” – The Guardian. (Subtitles) France/Italy 1969 Jacques Deray 120m *See website for Special Offer details

L’Heure de la Sortie A high school teacher throws himself from the classroom window before the terrified eyes of his students. Six of them remain oddly unemotional. New substitute teacher Pierre (Laurent Lafitte) notices the hostile behaviour of this closeknit clique, becomes obsessed and is quickly sucked into their sinister game. His life soon turns into a nightmare as the total separation and wall of misunderstanding between the generations intensifies. The film cleverly flirts with genre conventions, without ever truly becoming a horror film. (Subtitles) France 2018 Sébastien Marnier 103m
The Swallows of Kabul
Les Hirondelles de Kaboul A full-length animated feature, this is a very feminine endeavour in its gentle candour and colourful sensibility, portraying life under Taliban control. Violence is neither fetishized nor sanitised. Blood is seen as it soaks the burka, yet the wounds are never depicted. The directors portray a regime that relentlessly castigates females and suggests that women are less worthy than men. “Effective animated drama about two couples struggling under the cruelty of Taliban rule.” – Screen. Hal, wayward prince and heir to the English throne, is crowned King Henry V after his tyrannical father dies. Now the young king must navigate palace politics, the war his father left behind, and the emotional strings of his past life. Opening near the end of the bloody reign of Henry IV (Ben Mendelsohn), we find Timothée Chalamet as the king’s dissolute but peace-loving son Prince Hal. He is the heir to the throne but is much more interested in boozing and womanizing with his old pal John Falstaff (Joel Edgerton) than fronting up to his hateful father. When his younger brother is killed in battle, he has no choice but to assume his responsibilities. David Michôd (‘Animal Kingdom’) has created something genuinely fresh and confident, and strong source material together with gripping performances make this a period drama worth hailing. L’Angle Mort A music store employee discovers he has been born with the ability to render himself invisible. This is a refreshingly pessimistic take on a genre that’s dominated Hollywood for nearly two decades. Down-and-out Dominick (Jean-Christophe Folly) has a touch-and-go relationship with his affable girlfriend, Viveka (Isabelle Carre). As Dominick’s power becomes harder to control, things heat up with Elham (Golshifteh Farahani), a beautiful, blind musician whom Dominick had previously spied on while invisible. We were delighted to welcome Fiennes to introduce the film, together with the producer and director, the late Vera Glagoleva. – Roger Gibson. Natalya (Anna Vartanyan) laments losing her allure over the opposite sex as middle age approaches and finds herself increasingly jealous of her adopted daughter Vera (Anna Levanova). One last chance to see one of the best films of the year, and winner of the Audience Award at this year’s Chichester Film Festival. We follow thirty years in the life of a great artist played by Tom Schilling. The film goes from a childhood witnessing Nazi Germany; to post-war East Berlin, where he falls in love with a young woman (Paula Beer) whose father (Sebastian Koch) is an ex-Nazi in hiding; to escaping to the West at the time of the Berlin Wall; and ultimately being part of the exciting new movement in contemporary art. Colombia’s Academy Awards foreign film submission is a beautiful and intense film, which Peter Bradshaw (The Guardian) gives 5-stars, and places somewhere between ‘Apocalypse Now’, ‘Lord of the Flies’ and ‘Embrace of the Serpent’. A survivalist saga set on a remote mountain in Latin America. The film tracks a young group of soldiers and rebels – bearing names like Rambo, Smurf, Bigfoot, Wolf and Boom-Boom – who keep watch over an American hostage, Doctora (Julianne Nicholson). The teenage commandos perform military training exercises by day and indulge in youthful hedonism by night, an unconventional family bound together under a shadowy force known only as The Organization. As visually splendid as it is thought-provoking, ‘Monos’ takes an unsettling look at human nature whose grim insights leave a lingering impact. L’Adieu à la Nuit Catherine Deneuve plays a woman distraught to learn that her grandson has become a jihadist in Andre Techine’s latest, set once again in the director’s native southwest France. Taking place in the Pyrenees over several days of spring 2015 (the film is divided into chapters marking the days), Techiné introduces us to Muriel (Deneuve), who runs a farm and riding school. Muriel is soon visited by her university-age grandson Alex (Kacey Mottet Klein), apparently headed for work in Canada. In reality, he has other plans. Alex and his girlfriend Lila (Oulaya Amamra) have espoused the cause of Islamic fundamentalism, and plan to go to Syria to become jihadis. Deneuve is effortlessly compelling as an unflappable embodiment of tough love – and perhaps, symbolically, of enduring traditional French values. “Techiné, an affirmative if qualified humanist, gives us a hopeful ending.” – Bonjour Paris. This remarkable British film from Mark Jenkin is a clash of the old worlds and the new. Cornish fisherman Martin Ward (Edward Rowe) must deal with his brother Steven (Giles King), who uses their boat for tourist cruises, and the well-off Londoners who have bought his childhood home. The cultural clash is represented in the look of the film, shot with an old Bolex camera in black-and-white 16mm and hand-processed by Jenkin, which produces a realistic tone and a sense of depth and history. Beautifully shot, ‘Bait’ balances modern concerns with nostalgia. UK 2019 Mark Jenkins 95m

A feature documentary that shows us the crazy world of fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier. Models are cool people. Beautiful glamazons. You don’t think of them as freaks unless you are Jean Paul Gaultier. This critic’s favourite is a poetic and picturesque ode to the title city, to friendship and to the universal urge to find a place to call home. Jimmie Fails (as himself) dreams of reclaiming the Victorian home his grandfather built in the heart of San Francisco. Joined on his quest by his best friend Mont (Jonathan Majors), Jimmie searches for belonging in a rapidly changing city that seems to have left them behind. San Franciscans to the core, the two draw upon Fails’ family memories, blending images and music for a bittersweet tribute to their hometown via the disputed ownership of the house in question. Though Fails’ character bears his own name and the picture is autobiographical, this is not a documentary. Fails and coscreenwriter Rob Richert have embroidered on his experiences to create a story that melds realism with make-believe. A beautiful film. USA 2019 Joe Talbot 121m

Meeting Gorbachev
Winner of Best Documentary at the 2019 Chichester Film Festival with 65 five-star, and 10 four-star votes. This is the life of Mikhail Gorbachev, the eighth and final President of the Soviet Union, in conversation with Werner Herzog. Being his personal account of the part he played in such a volatile era, it is bound to be subjective, however Herzog attempts to place Gorbachev’s recollections in context, using some rarely seen archive footage in the process. The way Gorbachev was elevated to the top of the Soviet Union is seen here in almost comical terms, as his three predecessors – relics of the old Communist Party – are despatched in quick succession to their resting place at the foot of the Kremlin Wall. The real emotion comes towards the end when we learn about the final days of Mikhail’s beloved wife, Raisa. It’s a truly fascinating look at a remarkable time in world history. Now older, the WWII veteran once again reflects on his most prolific hits and, in particular, considers his involvement with his good friend Jimmy Hoffa’s (Pacino) disappearance in 1975. The film’s ace is a quietly electrifying Pesci, with a character so dramatically distant from his previous Scorsese incarnations (here, he is rational and professional). Surprisingly, there is plenty of humour in this film, where instead of flash and brash, Scorsese has delivered an effectively moving portrait that focuses on the emotional toll of being atop the mob underworld. Coincoin et les Z’inhumains Bruno Dumont’s sequel to 2014’s ‘Li’l Quinquin’, which signified his bold break from social realism into madcap experimentalism, revisits its ragtag characters in a new absurdist epic that reckons with xenophobia in northern France. As gobs of ectoplasm fall from the sky without warning, the nowteenaged CoinCoin (Alane Delhaye) must again evade the spluttering police captain Van der Weyden (Bernard Pruvost) and his deputy Carpentier (Philippe Jore) as they hunt for clues. Utterly ill-equipped to connect these splats to the sudden materialization of identical twins around town, their moments of prophetic lucidity are as surprising as they are revealing. 2016: Drive-In Movie In 2016, we presented for the first time in Chichester a drive in Movie event, to celebrate the 25th Chichester Film Festival. It was quite a logistical challenge indeed, with over 130 cars to accommodate with good site lines, and we selected ‘Casablanca’ to be shown on one of the biggest outdoor screens in the country. – Roger Gibson. A truly perfect movie, ‘Casablanca’ still wows viewers today, and for good reason. Its unique story of a love triangle set against terribly high stakes is sophisticated instead of outlandish, intriguing instead of garish. Humphrey Bogart plays the allegedly apolitical club owner in unoccupied French territory that is nevertheless crawling with Nazis; Ingrid Bergman is the lover who mysteriously deserted him in Paris; and Paul Heinreid is her heroic, slightly bewildered husband. This is certainly among the most spirited and ennobling movies ever made. USA 1942 Michael Curtiz 100m

Ken Loach’s follow-up to his 2017 Palme d’Or winner ‘I, Daniel Blake’, sees a hard-up delivery driver and his wife struggle to get by in modern-day England. Ricky (Kris Hitchen) and his family have been fighting an uphill struggle against debt since the 2008 financial crash. An opportunity to wrestle back some independence appears with a shiny new van and the chance to run a franchise as a self-employed delivery driver. It’s hard work, and his wife’s (Debbie Honeywood) job as a carer is no easier. The family unit is strong but when both are pulled in different directions everything comes to breaking point. Bruce Springsteen shows us who’s Boss in this intimate live concert performance, a companion piece to his album ‘Western Stars’. Performed live, with a 30-piece orchestra and a small private audience tucked into his 100-year-old barn in New Jersey, the songs are introduced via Springsteen’s ruminations on solitude and community. Where many recording artists of a certain age might be considering a Vegas residency or a duets album, Bruce Springsteen continues to test himself creatively and artistically. The film is a gorgeous tone poem that both deepens and personalizes the audio recording, creating a satisfying emotional arc that isn’t as apparent in the collection of 13 fully-orchestrated country-tinged songs released in June. ‘Western Stars’ is an intimate, wonderful gift. A married couple is forced to reckon with their idealized image of their son, adopted from war-torn Eritrea, after an alarming discovery by a devoted high school teacher threatens his status as an all-star student. It’s been ten years since Amy and Peter Edgar (Naomi Watts and Tim Roth) adopted their son from war-torn Eritrea, and they thought the worst was behind them. Luce Edgar (Kelvin Harrison Jr) has become an all-star student beloved by his community in Arlington, Virginia. His African American teacher, Harriet Wilson (Octavia Spencer), believes he is a symbol of black excellence that sets a positive example for his peers. But when he is assigned to write an essay in the voice of a historical 20th-century figure, Luce turns in a paper that makes an alarming statement about political violence. An extraordinary look at the lives of a middle-aged couple in the midst of a breast cancer diagnosis towards the wife. Joan and Tom (Lesley Manville and Liam Neeson) have been married for many years. An everyday couple with a remarkable love, there is an ease to their relationship which only comes from spending a lifetime together. When Joan is diagnosed with breast cancer, the course of her treatment shines a light on their enduring devotion, as they must find the humour and grace to survive a year of adversity. The film has remorselessly honest moments which make it so remarkable and beadily observed. There are the obligatory tears, setbacks and triumphs, but we see so much more: the waiting, the awkward silences, the kind or even baffling words of advice from strangers, at different stages in the process themselves, who you meet passing through the wards or sitting outside on the benches having a smoke. The two leads give extraordinary performances, giving depth and compassion to their characters, in a film that will touch many viewers who have experienced similar struggles. The story of Daniel Jones (Adam Driver), lead investigator for the US Senate’s sweeping study into the CIA’s Detention and Interrogation Program, which was found to be brutal, immoral and ineffective. The best heroes are often the ones behind the scenes who seek no glory and just strive to make a change for the greater good. With the truth at stake, Jones battled tirelessly to make public what many in power sought to keep hidden, focusing on the practices of the CIA with terror suspects in the aftermath of 9/11. However, the CIA is not about to have its reputation and influence besmirched. Keeping a grounded sense of reality but also a fastpaced approach to a story that spans countries and times is a real testament to Burns’ approach here, which is anchored by that star turn from Driver, who is making a case as one of the best actors that Hollywood has got. A David versus Goliath story which tackles some of our most challenging issues, homelessness and mental illness, setting the drama inside one of the last bastions of democracy-in-action: your public library. An unusually bitter Arctic blast has made its way to downtown Cincinnati and the front doors of the public library where the action of the film takes place. At odds with library officials over how to handle the extreme weather event, some homeless patrons turn the building into a shelter for the night by staging an “Occupy” sit in. What begins as an act of civil disobedience becomes a stand-off with police and a rush-to-judgment media constantly speculating about what’s really happening. An incisive and compassionate look at a marriage breaking up and a family staying together. Actress Nicole (Scarlett Johansson) and director Charlie’s (Adam Driver) marriage has reached a point of no return and they begin to undergo a difficult divorce that primarily centres on the care of their young son. As the battles grow more bitter and unhealthy, the pair try to remember what it was that they loved about each other in the first place, or is all that has transpired too much to ever turn back from? The calm build-up to a hurricane of human turmoil – aided by a charming but melancholic score from the iconic Randy Newman – is so natural yet cinematically executed that it feels like an insight into the death of a real-life love. The powerfully acted ‘Marriage Story’ is something special, and ranks among writerdirector Baumbach’s best works. USA 2019 Noah Baumbach 136m

Based on the 1945 Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical of the same name, it contains what many critics consider to be some of the pair’s most beautiful songs – no small feat, as they wrote a string of hits from ‘Oklahoma!’ to ‘The King and I’. The story revolves around Billy Bigelow (Gordon Macrae), a rough-talking macho carousel barker, and Julie Jordan (Shirley Jones), a young mill worker living in a small town in Maine. They fall in love, but after they are both fired from their jobs, struggle to remain afloat. Years later, following a tragic accident, Billy is given a chance to redeem himself. An unusually serious and exploratory musical, ‘Carousel’ juxtaposes elements of realism with pure fantasy alongside its lovely songs, and is led by newcomer Jones and singer-actor MacRae with wonderful chemistry and charisma. Lucian Freud: A Self Portrait

Exhibition on Screen For the first time in history the Royal Academy of Arts in London, in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, is bringing together Lucian Freud’s self-portraits. The exhibition will display more than 50 paintings, prints and drawings in which this modern master of British art turned his unflinching eye firmly on himself. One of the most celebrated painters of our time, Lucian Freud is also one of very few 20thcentury artists who portrayed themselves with such consistency. Spanning nearly seven decades his self-portraits give a fascinating insight into both his psyche and his development as a painter, from his earliest portrait painted in 1939 to the final one executed 64 years later. When seen together, his portraits represent an engrossing study into the dynamic of ageing and the process of self-representation. This intensely compelling exhibition creates a unique opportunity for Exhibition on Screen to reveal the life’s work of a master in one show. UK 2019 David Bickerstaff 80m

Greta Gerwig brings to the screens a new adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s 1868 literary classic. Four teenaged sisters (Amy – Florence Pugh, Meg – Emma Watson, Jo – Saoirse Ronan, Beth – Eliza Scanlen) and their mother, Marmee (Laura Dern), live in a new neighbourhood in Massachusetts in genteel poverty. Having lost all his money, their father is acting as a pastor, miles from home, involved in the American Civil War. The women face their first Christmas without him, and their fortunes fluctuate from literary success to love, to chronic illness. Judy and Punch
In the anarchic town of Seaside (nowhere near the sea), puppeteers Judy and Punch are trying to resurrect their marionette show in a town on the brink of mob rule. The marionette show is a hit due to Judy’s (Mia Wasikowska) superior puppeteering, but Punch’s (Damon Herriman) driving ambition and penchant for whisky lead to an inevitable tragedy that Judy must avenge. In a visceral and dynamic live-action reinterpretation of the famous 16th century puppet show, writer director Foulkes turns the traditional story of Punch and Judy on its head and brings to life a fierce, darkly comic and epic female-driven revenge story. A complex comedy-drama about spousal abuse, infant mortality and misogyny told with magic tricks, puppets and slapstick. One thing that is for sure – it is not formulaic. “There ain’t no use flappin’ your wings, ’cause we are stuck in the flypaper of life!”. Bob Fosse’s 1969 musical comedy-drama is based on the script of Fellini’s ‘Nights of Cabiria’. Charity Hope Valentine (MacLaine) always tries to look on the bright side of life, despite working in a rundown dance hall and contending with a seemingly endless run of bad dates. Determined to find love, she falls for actor Vittorio Vidal (Montalban), but their romance is short-lived. However, when she finds herself stuck in an elevator with the reserved Oscar Lindquist (John McMartin), it seems she may have finally met her match. Boasting amazing costumes (by Edith Head), fantastic songs (such as ‘Hey, Big Spender’) and dance sequences (including ‘Rich Man’s Frug’), the heart of the film nevertheless belongs to MacLaine, who is splendidly charming, funny and forthright. Our final selection in this Hollywood Musical BFI tour is this incredibly stylish study of the hedonism and sexual ambiguity of pre-war Berlin, which made Liza Minnelli (who won Best Actress) a star. Often described as a musical for people who don’t like musicals, it sets its scene in 1931 Berlin, against a backdrop of increasing antisemitism and the growing Nazi Party. We follow Brian (Michael York), a new British arrival in the city, as he befriends Sally Bowles (Minnelli), a talented performer at the risqué Kit Kat Klub. Full of brilliantly choreographed set-pieces, ‘Cabaret’ influenced generations of filmmakers and remains a key queer cinema film with its early exploration of bisexuality on screen. The film is centred around a truly fabulous performance from Minnelli, evincing both exuberance and vulnerability as she wields glamour against despair. La Dolce Vita
A director whose name loomed large over his films, Federico Fellini was one of the great Italian filmmakers in modern cinema. This is the first in a series of his films that we will be screening in conjunction with the BFI in early 2020 to mark the centenary of his birth. A series of stories following a week in the life of a philandering Roman paparazzo journalist Marcello Rubini (Marcello Mastroianni), who could easily be Fellini’s alter-ego. The film includes the image of Anita Ekberg cavorting in the Trevi fountain, which is one of the era’s most iconic. Beginning with the startling image of a statue of Christ being transported over the city by helicopter, Fellini’s panorama of the contemporary Roman ‘good life’ marked a decisive turning point in the director’s career. Leaving behind his small-scale, realism-rooted dramas of the 50s, this episodic story of a tabloid reporter’s comings and goings within the decadent upper reaches of modern Italian society found Fellini moving in a flamboyant new direction. The film’s atmosphere of moral lassitude, together with its then scandalous sexual frankness, created a popular sensation, introducing the world to the word paparazzi. The Personal History of David Copperfield
This retelling of the Dickens novel by Armando Iannucci (‘In the Loop’, ‘The Death of Stalin’), puts a fresh, funny, and utterly charming spin on this British literature classic, proving some stories truly are timeless. From birth to infancy, from adolescence to adulthood, the good-hearted David Copperfield (Dev Patel) is surrounded by kindness, wickedness, poverty and wealth, as he meets an array of remarkable characters in Victorian England. As David sets out to be a writer, in his quest for family, friendship, romance and status, the story of his life is the most seductive tale of all. Inspired by Dickens’s own whimsical, politically provocative and brutal sense of humour, Iannucci makes us laugh, but also makes us think about why some people are funnier than others, tapping into the fury and despair of bright men who, when it comes to spontaneous wit, are clueless. With a great script, and a cast that includes Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Gwendoline Christie, Ben Wishaw and Peter Capaldi. UK 2019 Armando Iannucci 116m

Keep on Keeping on: A Tribute to Alan Bennett
It is hard to pigeonhole Alan Bennett, and correspondingly easy to undervalue his achievements. Although one of the most recognisable writers of his generation, his unassumingly owlish persona and fondness for self-deprecation has created the impression of a lovably eccentric minor talent, whose amusingly droll plays about elderly Northern women (typically played by Thora Hird) and fusspot secretaries (Patricia Routledge) are merely one step up from sitcom. The idea that he might be the most important and innovative British television playwright initially seems laughable. But it’s hard to think of a stronger contender. His prolific output includes individual television plays, television series and cinema films, together with numerous stage works, short stories, assorted journalism and his inimitable diaries. An Englishman Abroad ,A Question of Attribution and the two Talking Heads series (BBC, 1988/98), are regularly cited amongst British television’s greatest achievements, and he is widely recognised as the master of the television monologue. In this pair of talks we take a chronological look at the man and his work from his early plays like “Sunset Over the Bay” to his outstanding film scripts – The Lady in the Van,The History Boys and the Madness of King George among others. Both talks are stand-alone but we do hope you join Rosemary for both sessions in what should prove a highly emotional and amusing event. 120m x2

Illusions and Games: The Cinema of Jean Renoir
‘If you’re dealing with cinema, you’re dealing with Renoir.’ Martin Scorsese ‘The greatest of all directors.’ Orson Welles In 2012 much was made of the dethroning of Citizen Kane from the top of Sight and Sound’s decennial critics’ poll of the greatest films ever made by Hitchcock’s Vertigo. Inevitably, perhaps, little notice was taken of the film in 4th place, The Rules of the Game, directed by Jean Renoir, which received 100 votes. Yet that film, a country house set comedy drama, has accompanied Kane in the top ten for sixty years. On the 40th anniversary of his death there will be a rare screening of Jean Renoir’s classic short film ‘A Day in the Country’, followed by a talk which will explore the qualities that made Renoir such a highly revered filmmaker, using extracts from films such as La Grande Illusion, The Crime of Monsieur Lange and The Rules of the Game. 165m Federico Fellini Centenary To celebrate 100 years since the birth of legendary Italian director Federico Fellini, we will be screening ‘La Dolce Vita’ in January (see pg52), followed by a further three of his films and an illustrated talk in our Awards season (Feb-Apr 2010).

Du Maurier’s novels are famous for the ease with which they transfer to the silver screen – stories of passion, tension and alarmingly candid psychological takes on her characters, both male and female, trapped in unhealthily obsessive relationships make stunning films. Her writing was noted as being so strongly cinematic that Hitchcock made three films based on her work – ‘Jamaica Inn’, ‘The Birds’ and ‘Rebecca’ -while ‘Don’t Look Now’, the classic horror film directed by Nicholas Roeg , was based on her story. The novel, ‘My Cousin Rachel’, has recently been made into a film starring Rachel Weisz and the play is part of the Winter programme at Chichester Festival Theatre. We are delighted once again to join with CFT in a three-part tribute to Du Maurier. The event includes: The Studio talk above; A backstage tour of the CFT set of ‘My Cousin Rachel’ on Feb 1, followed by a screening in the auditorium of Du Maurier’s best known work ‘Rebecca’.
